1st off I want to say customer service is great very much appreciated and 2nd is this restaurant is very old but so much history and different location. Food is good but I only had two complaints the biscuits was not baked all the way and the pancakes I couldn't tell if it was lemon seed poppy or some kind of flavoring did not taste very well but on the other hand everything else was delicious so overall the breakfast experience I will rate 4 out of 5 and only because of the sweet staff members but if you improve on both the pancakes and biscuits than maybe I'll come back again next weekend but if yall love variety this place here has it even donuts pastries and juices but it has a breakfast buffet worth the price. Also if you like lunch they got great food great southern food with the southern hospitality to match and if I m not mistaken I do believe they also do all you can eat catfish every Friday, so whenever yall get a chance check this place out. read more

This is a first for me. I am giving a rating unbiased to the food received. I am not even going to get into the food or the service in my review other than to say that it was ample and I was satisfied with my visit. I arrived to find friendly service, was politely served, checked on, I ate, paid, and then left. Here is why they get a fiver... As I am waiting to get my food I see a man who looks to be obviously in need of help. He has a cane and is carrying a cardboard sign. He walks past the door and disappeared into the column, mysteriously, (he's not Harry Potter Daniel) meaning he posted up in front of the shop. I noticed him, and I am now ashamed to say that I was dreading leaving and being solicited by him upon exiting. I just knew he was waiting to pounce on me as I left. As I am eating and people watching, I see some older folks leave and he asked them for whatever as they hit the parking lot. They go to the car and retrieve a granola bar for him. They give it to him and are on their way. My server notices the exchange and I see her dismay. Someone hustling outside your business can be a real challenge. Humanity vs. Business. It's a hard thing to deal with. She goes to the back... A few minutes later, a woman, obviously the owner, checks on me as she walks by. I assure her I am fine and she makes her way to the door. She politely tells him he cannot hang out there. Then, all of the sudden, she asked him if he was hungry. Of course we all know the answer to that. He says yea I guess and she heads back in. She turns around and instructs her crew to feed him and take care of him. He comes in and grabs a seat and is served a giant plate of food. It was a great meal for this man. Complete with all of the fixings fit for a king. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN BEFORE! Ever... I left, I felt good overtipping and all, but.... I am ashamed of myself. I am ashamed of how I reacted and how I dreaded helping this man. I am proud of this business owner for not being a shithead like me. Society has made me a bad person I am afraid. I hope I can cure that. I hope she reads this and knows that I am so in awe by her kindness and decency. read more

The Lunch Buffet was set up, but it looked heavier than I wanted, so I ordered the Morning Breakfast Special ($6.50). 2 eggs any style / choice of bacon, 2 sausage patties, or 3 links / choice of 1 pancake, biscuit & gravy, or toast / choice of hash browns, grits, or tomatoes / coffee or tea / Beats the heck out of a breakfast biscuit & oj out the McDonald's window for almost as much $, or the (lack of) atmosphere in a Waffle House or IHOP. As many know, The Cottage is a longtime Memphis staple, serving up southern cooking. There is a secret that you may not be aware of and that's the addition of Thai food. Owners and teachers, Tom and Tonya are originally from Thailand and are now educating people about their food and culture! The menu includes the Thai standards which they are so good in making to each person's preference. What I enjoy the most though is when their creative cooking urge results in something new to me and represents something special to them from their homeland. I feel like I just pulled up a chair at their table. T & T are the kindest couple who embraces all who visit. This has culminated in a wonderful and colorful food community. I am still in the restaurant and I don't like this place at ALL. Everything is over done, dry, and flavorless. On top of that, I saw one of those bugs mentioned in another review. Buffet looks so old I'm surprised the station was warm (not hot), and it doesn't seem to know how to pick a certain look and go with it. I will never even look this direction again. I have eaten at The Cottage many times. Eaten as in past tense. It was one of my very favorites. This is the old Lenny's location. I've eaten here many times as well. Since The Cottage moved here, I've been only once before, and that was about two years ago, right after they moved. I must say, my visit on Monday morning was much better than my previous visit. They say the old building was in horrible shape and needed to be torn down. For me, it had character. The new cottage had bare red walls two years ago, but it definitely has some character now. Records on the wall. Some memories of Memphis. Liberty Land. Pop Tunes. They are even offering lunch buffets now. Yes, it's time to rekindle my long lost love at The Cottage. I rarely eat breakfast anymore, but circumstances brought me here and I was unusually hungry for breakfast. I like meat. I like burgers. The hamburger steak fit the glove. The biscuits were fresh and homemade. The gravy made me drool. The hash browns were great, and the coffee kept a coming. I like the Cottage. I used to love it. For me, this just isn't the same place as it was, but my therapist has been helping me overcome that. These folks really know how to cook! read more

Now and again, one gets a hankering for something on the country cooking/soul food order. I stopped by the Cottage Restaurant on Summer Avenue, in the French Village Square. This was my first visit to The Cottage in many years. The fried green tomatoes were cooked to perfection: tender and with just the right kind of breading on them. The Northern beans were very good, The turnip greens tasted as if someone had just gone to the garden, picked them and cooked them. The fried chicken livers were also cooked to perfection. I didn't taste the cornbread yet, since I got this order to go and still have half of my meal left, which I will eat the cornbread with later. They do have a lunch buffet, but it was half empty and what was there looked as if it might have been left over from another day. Based upon what I saw at the buffet, it would not have been my choice. Overall, I give a 4 star rating. This is because there was not one grain of salt or seasoning in any of the food. Just a little bit would have helped. The worst part was having to wait about 25 minutes for my order. This was at 1:30 in the afternoon, when the place wasn't busy. When I asked the waitress about how much longer it would be, she said they were working on it, but had only one cook, and he had a lot of orders ahead of me. I looked around and saw only 8 other people in there, and all 8 of them already had their food in front of them; therefore, I'm not sure what orders the cook had ahead of mine. But, due too the time it took to get my food, and due to the lack of seasoning, I give four stars. Still, the food was definitely worth returning for. read more

The hidden gems are always the best but honey, this ain't it. There's a sign in one of the booths which basically said, 'Please don't take the condiments or you'll be asked to leave'but a bit funnier. That alone earns this place one of the stars. I ordered a veggie omelet. What I received was an unreasonable facsimile. Canned, limp vegetables with the bonus of some cheese product not mentioned when asking after the contents. The Thai food here is absolutely the best in Memphis. Sure, there is a little bit of a wait (20 minutes). However who cares, when you get healthy ingredients that are freshly prepared into something colorful and uniquely delicious. The waitstaff are entertaining and friendly. The restrooms are clean. The atmosphere is that of a country restuarant. The people who wrote reviews stating this restuarant is slow on the uptake should just stick with McDonald's were everything is fake, unhealthy, and served in five minutes. I just went to this restaurant this morning to eat breakfast, I was waiting on my food and noticed the table across from me had a big cockroach crawling all over the table. When the waitress came back to my table I showed her the roach still crawling on the table. Needless to say I did not stay to eat...The waitress was very polite and apologized. We have gone to The Cottage before, but not since they moved down the street to the new location. Well, the food is still good because it tastes fresh made. I had the Chicken & Dressing which was almost as good as my Yams and Turnip Greens. All that to say, the food is still good. If you haven't tried them in the new location, swing by. Ah, The Cottage Restaurant.... Ah, The Cottage Restaurant. So, you moved a mile East on Summer. Good move - I don't think the crooks will try to steal your HVAC copper from the new location. But, what about the food. The last time I ate at the old location, I was disappointed as was my associate. The food had little seasoning, just didn't taste fresh. Hopefully, this time, in a new location, a start? Well, it was better, most of it. Had the meat loaf with Italian sauce, turnip greens, northern beans and cornbread. The only 'blah' item was unfortunately the main item, the meatloaf. Very uniform. Too uniform, cut into thin slices, I didn't taste any onions or peppers, had me wondering if it was really homemade. I guess it was, but, just about any homemade meatloaf we make ourselves is much better. The veggies, however, were really good, rightly seasoned, and the cornbread was good. The menu is pretty limited, there was a sparse crowd at lunch. I think the regulars keep them in business. Hopefully, they'll make it at their new location. read more

Our first time to try the Thai menu. We ordered Panang Curry, Yellow Curry and a chicken stir fry. All the food is made fresh to order. We started with an order of egg rolls. They were great and the dipping sauce with fresh peppers and cilantro was wonderful. Nothing out of a jar. Of the three, our favorite was the Panang Curry, but the stir fry, with the fresh ingredients and light sauce was very good also. We will be back to try other menu items. read more

A waitress and one cook were the only people working on the day that I visited. I never add salt to my food nor do I cook with a lot of it. Nevertheless, I found myself adding salt and pepper to my meal. Food and brown thick congealed gravy were very bland. read more

I stopped in for breakfast at their new location. It was around 7:30 am on a Tuesday. I was the only customer so I got great service. I just ordered eggs, sausage, grits & biscuit. Eggs & sausage were fine. Grits had not been stirred in a while. I scooped out 2 hard lumps that I could cut with a knife. It was a tiny bowl so after I removed the lumps, I didn't have many grits remaining. One large delicious biscuit. I'd prefer 2 smaller biscuits in case I want sausage on one & jelly on the other or gravy on one. The price was great. My meal INCLUDING coffee was $7. Coffee at ihop or Cracker Barrel is almost $2. Breakfast was average but inexpensive. I'm looking forward to trying their lunch vegetables. read more

Born and raised in Memphis, I left my hometown in 96' to take up residence in Atlanta, GA. I was recently in Memphis to visit with my family and my sister talked me into visiting the "New" Cottage. If you're from Memphis, the original Cottage and hometown staple was located at a different location on Summer Ave. Tom took over the Cottage and moved it to its new location at 4085 Summer. I brought my daughter and met my sister (a Cottage Regular) there for a breakfast treat. The restaurant was filled with the weekend regulars and the southern breakfast with a full Thai menu was amazing! If you live in Memphis and have never visited this unique place, it's a must. If you're visiting Memphis to hear great music you must pop in and Tom and Tonya will take care of you as you marvel at the Elvis corner shrine and all of the other different decorations in this place. I will be back to talk with Tom and the regulars like Sam, Ron, Bob, and all the other regulars. BTW, Tom gave us a cinnamon roll treat and gave my daughter a bag of candy for the ride back to Atlanta. EPIC! read more

We went for Thai food this evening. They do open from 5pm-8pm for dinner (yelp hasn't updated this). They took over the place since July 2017. This restaurant was ran by an older couple, and only two of them were there (serve and cook and etc) when we arrived. So service may be slow when it gets crowded, but the Thai food is worth the wait. We got fresh hot tea that smelled like vanilla. All the dishes were freshly cooked after we ordered and they were all amazing!! The egg rolls weren't greasy at all. The shrimp dish was tangy and spicy. The key is the shrimps were fresh and not over cooked. Panang curry was a bit different than the other restaurant that it was more savory than sweet. And our tom yum has the fluffiest and juiciest tofu. And they are not shy about giving you good mushrooms!! (I guess you can swap out if you weren't a mushroom fan). Will definitely come back and support this little shop. read more
