    Spicy Tuna Don
    Maggie H.

This place was a delight to find! Small inside, nice booths, quiet on a Sunday evening. Affordable, classic dishes. They were helpful when I asked about my allerdy, and apparently they don't use peanuts at all in the kitchen which is great news for those with allergies. I would double check about tree nuts though. I would recommend the spicy tuna don, which was a real highlight. We will be back. Check this place out if you're in the neighbourhood!

If you want affordable, fast and a vast menu for Japanese food then Sushi Yama fits the bill. I have been to Sushi Yama a few times and again yesterday for dinner. I came for the affordable food and understood quality is not at the top of the list. I know what I am stepping into. Here is what I like and didn't like from yesterday: Liked: Unagi Don: the sweet soya sauce was ladled perfectly over the grilled eel fillets. The rice was warm and soaked up the sweet sauce and eel nicely. Rolls: East of Eden, Sunset and Kings Gate. Pleasantly presented and good amount of fillings. However, don't expect the typical sushi rice flavours. Didn't like: Takoyaki: arrived cold as if it was made an hour ago. Oshitashi Spinch: totally bland and lacked the umami flavours and sauce. Very disappointed as I had this before and it was delicious with the subtle flavours bursting through. Carrot Cake: it was dry and hard. Enough said. I noticed many locals came for take-out between 6-7pm so that cause the servers to be more busy at the front desk but also missed the attention of those dining in. We received our bill immediately after the servers cleared the table and didn't bother to ask if we wanted dessert or anything else. My friend wanted dessert and when asked, the server had a surprised look and took the bill away. I won't make the extra effort to track to Sushi Yama but maybe give it another shot in the distance future when I am in the neighborhood. Consistency needs to be at the very top of the list.

Lunch special, chicken teriyaki bento box for $10.34 CAD post-tax!

This is a classic local sushi restaurant that you can rely on for affordable prices and average Japanese food. *Disclaimer: You get what you pay for, so do not come here expecting the highest quality ingredients. With that being said, definitely make sure to check out their lunch special bento boxes (chicken/beef teriyaki, salad, California roll, mixed assortment of tempura, and miso soup) for $10.34 CAD post-tax! This may be the cheapest bento box in Vancouver I've found so far. Overall, I would definitely not go out of my way to come here. However, if you happen to already be in the area and are looking for a quick fix to your sushi cravings, then Sushi Yama is a solid option.

I had been here before and had a good experience, this time not so great. The portion were about half the size that I would expect. The salmon tasted funny.

One of my favourite places for sushi, they are a tiny little restaurant that has great bento boxes, well priced special rolls and delicious food! I love their caterpillar roll, their kamikaze roll and their deluxe yama bento. We get takeout from here too and all their standard rolls are great as well! Unlike other special rolls at other places, there isn't too much sauce meaning that the fresh flavours can stand out. Sashimi salad is also quite good although there are large pieces, it will not be the best sashimi you have ever tasted. Overall, one of my go-tos for sushi but not the most comfortable place to sit.

We were recommended to come here by a friend who was Vancouver. We were told it was the Sushi Stop of Canada. Since we both love Sushi Stop because it's cheap and satisfies us every time we were very happy to try it out. I was quite surprised when they brought us both tea and miso soup right when we arrived. This reminded me of the Japanese restaurants I went to in Japan and the traditional restaurant that was in the city I grew up in. The service was very impressive. All the servers were very happy to help you and were very industrious, zipping from one side of the restraint to the other, where they were in plain view the whole time to get you help immediately. On top if that they were incredibly accommodating to vegan and vegetarian questions. They were very honest when they were not sure what was vegan and made it very easy for me to order. I found out that the miso was not vegan. The vegetable tempura was also not vegan. I was still able to get the vegetable gyoza, the yam roll, avocado roll, the teriyaki tofu, and the sombae (?) salad (not sure of spelling). Between the tea and the wide array of options I left very full, taken care of, and leaving happier than when I first arrived. My partner was also very happy. I actually liked this place better than sushi stop because there were so many more vegan options. It was incredible!

This place is like an entertainment gong show here. Yes I am serious about it! So my first time at this restaurant and my impression about the place: Short staffed with only 2 server with full house -the 2 server has to take orders, answer phone, clean tables, bring out orders, also the people manning the till. The place is not small. Ok so this is what happened. Came in at 11:20 pm and that was like the only restaurant open in the area. Decided to give it a try. I ordered the chef special sushi combo. I asked what was in it and the waitress said its Chef Special. So I asked her what is chef special. She said she doesn't know it is what the Chef believe is special. I was like ???????? And so I asked her can I tell her what I don't want in the Chef Special Sushi combo. She said yes to that. So I said to no Taco which is octopus. I asked for a glass of ice water. I didn't get it right away. I had to ask like 5 times to get it and there was no ice in it. During my 1 hour stay I witnessed: -The waitress kept on bring wrong food to the wrong table. And she would walk around trying to find out which table order it. -Waitress taking order and suddenly she had to answer the phone. She grabbed the phone too quick and dropped on the floor. She picked up the phone and was like "Hello hello hello" very loud. Then she threw back into her apron. The customer was confused and I was entertained. -Waitress dropping things on the floor making banging sounds. Luckly those are plastic plates and cups. But again plastics do break. Look at the plate the chef special sushi was on. As well, I finished my water and wanted another glass. I had to ask multiple times again before I really got water. Also the table kept on rocking. They should fix it. Horrible service. So horrible I have never seen it so bad at a restaurant like this. Their food wise is very mediocre. I don't think I will be coming back ever again. Unless I can't avoid it.

Shashimi Donburi and Salmon Shashimi on point
    Cee T.

Small neighborhood place, great staff, so attentive serving hot tea beverages right when you enter. Had the salmon shashimi and sushi donburi. Shashimi cut was thick giving that satisfying pleasure when you bite in. Temperature was perfect on the shashimi. The sushi donburi was a selection of 11 sashimi slices, rice consistency was not bad. Would definitely go again. Fair pricing.

Vegetable roll, avocado roll, avocado & mango roll

I've been coming to Sushi Yama for over 10 years and it's always been a reliable place for sushi. Well-priced, tasty, efficient and friendly service, and filling. I often get one of their vegetable sushi combos (about $10 each), which each come with 3 rolls and a miso soup. Their goma ae ($4.25) is always solid as well, as is their Inari sushi ($1.50 per piece). Now they have online ordering where they offer 5% off (as if it wasn't already a good deal). Not necessarily a place you seek out for mind-blowing sushi, but a very solid neighbourhood place that we've eaten at countless times over the years.

This was a great experience all around :) especially now that things are re-opening this restaurant took all the necessary precautions to keep customers safe and I felt comfortable sitting for dine-in. The staff were super friendly, the food delicious and very nicely plated and the prices very competitive. I highly recommend this place. The menu selection was varied and offered options for all dietary needs and likes.

a close up of a sushi with chopsticks

Terrible. The agedashi tofu had a thin gooey mush layer on the outside, zero crispiness. I also got a yam and avocado roll. The slivers of yam were undercooked and there was barely any avocado. Basically globs of rice with subtle notes of undercooked yam and a sniff of avocado. I ended up throwing out most of the roll and will not be eating from here again.

Been going to this sushi spot about once a year for many years, Japanese fun, so the quality is pretty good. Service can be hit and miss, however today I sat at the sushi bar and had their full attention. Miso soup today was a bit off, but the sushi was great. The rice was perfect consistency/texture, temperature, and seasoning. Fish was fresh. I had the salmon, toro, negitoro, spicy scallop, and hamachi nigiris. Also had a "real crab" cali roll. Perfect amount of rice and balance if ingredients. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, so decor and ambience isn't great. But the fish is fresh and the execution hits the mark. Highly recommended.

Assorted nigiri. Tobiko with quail egg an hamachi are my favs.
    James L.

Update: New management. Sad but not surprised that the prices increased. I'd be okay with this if things changed for the better but unfortunately the quality dropped significantly, portions got smaller, and the decor is now super generic and cold now. As much as I want to, I can not recommend this place anymore.

Steep as it is, I decided I wanted a "quick little sushi lunch with a view", and a quick little sushi lunch with a few is exactly what I received. Although I don't recommend it, I walked right in from the street, no reservation, and was seated at the bar (in pretty casual street clothes I may add). I enjoyed a premium sake flight (which was fine...just fine), an old fashioned served with the perfect accompanying dark chocolate, and a good amount of sushi including their signature aburi style sushi in flight form and nigiri tuna flight (bluefin, chutoro, otoro). After visiting Japan last December, I'm a bit of an otoro snob but I have to hand it to them, all three of these cuts were perfect. The accompanying rice, perfection. The quality of the fish, divine. The view was the cherry on top of this experience. This will certainly be a spot I revisit next time I'm in Vancouver.

Michelin starred quality in their service by how they explained the menu, brought out the food, came back around to refill waters. Just top notch service and elegantly so. The food was good but not of value. Their lunch set was a good introductory to what they offer. I enjoyed the food for its flavours and presentation but I thought that it was a bit overpriced. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, fresh and definitely elevated, but it was $50 for 10pcs of sushi, 2 appetizer sized samples of their appetizer or entree dishes, and miso soup (which we did not get and didn't realize till much later in the day). If you're wanting an upscale experience (and portion) of good quality food or wanting to impress other parties, then this is a nice spot. For regular eats, it's a bit too luxurious to be a casual thing in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and calm. They have a patio, which has a meh view overlooking the harbor, but beware of a breezy day. It will catch a bit of a wind tunnel. They have heaters and blankets but the heaters don't really reach unless you're sitting next to it.
