Let's get a few things straight... DELISH food - very artistic, excellent decor and overall ambiance, very friendly staff who can't seem to serve the tiny restaurant! I don't understand why they can't serve maybe 9 tables between two servers. I received saki without a cup and couldn't get anyone's attention until I was done with my meal. I ordered a second roll and they didn't clear my empty plate, I ordered a soda twice and then had to wave someone down to get a refill, I asked for a roll to be made with regular tuna instead of spicy tuna and was informed that it was premade. ... ok... so? Guess it's too much to ask for a non-spicy hand roll. Also the tea tasted like stale tapwater with no flavor at all. Super friendly service, they just couldn't do anything right. There interior is very nice and modern. Love that they give you 3 mini appetizers all of which are good! I ordered the Kenai roll and it was delicious. It was actually spicy which I loved. They did take a good 15-20 minutes to bring me my food and the restaurant was not that busy but maybe they had togo orders. read more

If you're in the Dimond corridor, this would be a good place for sushi. They have an extensive menu of rolls and sashimi, as well as appetizers, fried rice and sake. The hot sake was delicious and their gyzoga was the best I've ever had. I had a basic cali roll, which was pretty good but usually I like the exotic rolls. The menu breaks out cooked rolls vs uncooked, so it would be a great place for a first timer to try out several different kinds. Only complaint is that it's pretty darn expensive. I don't know if they have a happy hour, but I'd come back then for sure. Most of the specialty rolls are in the $12-14 range which can add up quickly. Service was sufficient. read more

Love this place! When you first walk into a new restaurant you have high hopes for a spot to keep coming to and this place caught my attention so fast because the food is amazing! Portion's are great and the rolls are delicious! My husband ordered Bul Go Gi and it was HUGE, thick pieces of meat, very delicious and the Golden State roll was awesome. My 2 year old loves sushi and he tore it up! so 2 thumbs up for him eating majority of it! Anyway, best sushi spot so far since I moved here from California a couple of months ago. I always try to hit this place up when I'm in anchorage. They just did some remodeling inside. It's now more open and modern looking. They got rid of the booths which is nice and replaced tables with chairs. Their sushi is yummy. I love the miso soup, and salad that comes with the sushi. Service is prompt and friendly. They have two TV's so you can watch a game while your at the bar. This is a great sushi place to go to. read more

Hubby and I were invited by friends for lunch. We're not too experienced with sushi, but love other Japanese food... I have to admit that I was apprehensive, at first. The decor is lovely and quaint and I was at ease almost instantly. Hard to believe this used to be a Taco Bell that I used to visit everyday in high school! Our friends ordered some yummy hot sake, which they shared with us. They ordered a bunch of different rolls , none of which I have any idea about, but it all looked delish. Hubs ordered the teriyaki chicken, and I had tempura shrimp. Both were scrumptious, and after only 4 days, we're craving it! Standard sushi joint. Prices are nothing special and neither is the selection. Flavors were on point for the most part and the atmosphere was fine. We couldn't finish the last few pieces and decided to take them to go. My nephew ate a piece the next morning after being refrigerated all night and the following few days became violently ill. Now I'm aware taking sushi to go isn't a common practice, however it scared me that the fish was so close to turning in the first place. I've had day old sushi many times with no problems. This was my family and my first time here. I like the decor. It is very clean, modern. And I especially like the wooden lights shaped as whales. It was fairly busy for 5pm on Friday night. Man this hurts, I used to love this place and even had a VIP card. I ordered from here all the time. The last 3 times they have been extremely rude, and messed up my order horribly. Ive had to drive back to go and pick up missed items. Instead of giving it for free or at least offering a discount they are completely rude. Such a sad, sad thing to see. This was the place several years ago. I stopped coming here after they served me old hamachi two times in a row. We decided to give it a try tonight and nothing has changed. The sushi rice was under cooked and had way too much vinegar. I cannot accept a basic and #1 ingredient to be inedible. I could not tell if the fish was OK as the rice overpowered the dish. When I lived on the East side, I loved Samurai Sushi (still try to get there a couple times per year). Then when we moved south, Haru seemed to do the trick, but it burned down. This past week was my first time to Sushi Ya in some time, and I'm hooked! Great food, good prices, nice ambience, and good - albeit slow - service. I do agree with other reviewers that the miso soup could use less sodium though. Most sushi spots on the South side are crazy expensive and just not that great. I'm glad I found the exception to that rule, and I'll be back often for your dinner combos! Great little sushi restaurant! They have a killer deal of $10 rolls and most of them are pretty yummy. They've got the basics down like California roll, crunch roll and etc however I'm only giving it 3 stars because their sashimi did not taste fresh. I was running late to see a movie nearby and got in and out of this restaurant in 20 minutes with a delicious meal - the Sunkissed roll was on point! I liked it the first couple times I went, but I went a week ago and they weren't very busy but kept forgetting about us. After over an HR after we ordered our food I went to find our server and ask about our order or at least our appetizers but they lost it so we had to reorder. Sushi Ya had the best sushi I have had in a long time. The wasabi is the hottest of the last 4 sushi places i have eaten in Anchorage. The Ginger is so pure and tasty. Atmosphere is quiet and large booths allow privacy. Service is superb! read more

I have come to Sushi Ya before and have been pleased with the service in the past. I decided to order lunch for my entire company. We ordered a little under $200 worth of Sushi. We received our order and found that we did not receive any miso soup or salad that is suppose to come when ordering any of the sushi rolls. I called and spoke to a gentleman who in turn spoke with his manager. Not sure why his manager did not get on the phone with me? They stated that they do not pack miso soup or salad on to go orders because of added packaging costs. Okay, that is fine but it is advertised to come with soup and salad and no mention that these are excluded are given when ordering. In addition, we paid full price for all the items. I did not ask for money back but did ask for something to fix the situation. I would be fine with a future credit or coupon to use next time but none was offered. Only the same excuse of saving on packaging costs yet, they charge full price. As a business owner myself, if I advertise it, I provide it. They forever lost my business as a small company, likely lost more. They will charge you full price, not fulfill the order and then blame it on packaging costs. Run your business better! read more

Service and food is great. However the management is very poor. They do not care about the customers. All the care about is making money regardless if their guests are happy and satisfied. We walked in the doors and was told to take a seat to wait. They did not give us any estimation of how long so I figured they just needed to clean off the table and we'd have a table in maybe 5-10 minutes. We waited 30 minutes for a table and then when we finally got one, our waitress brought us water without even looking at us or saying anything and left. We looked at the menu, decided what we wanted. And waited 10 minutes for our waitress to come back over. Instead of taking our order she was busy cleaning tables of people who were leaving so the 2 customers who had been waiting 5 minutes could get a table. We finally decided we had waited enough and just walked out. Horrible service with 0 smiles on any of their faces. I understand it was a busy night, but if someone had already waited 30 minutes for a table and is waiting to get serviced, you don't start cleaning tables for other people. You could have come over, asked what we wanted, and then went to clean the tables. Extremely disappointed and we won't be coming back read more

My family and friends eat here at least twice a month for the last 5 or more years I think. The food is delicious and prices are very reasonable as they have their Happy Hour deals all day. The portions are smaller (especially their rolls) than other sushi places but good. Love their new location on Old Seward highway. The staff is always very attentive and friendly. The owner is usually there in her beautiful Korean attire, always welcoming and walking around to make sure everyone's needs are met. I would highly recommend this place! read more

Decided to try the vegetable roll at different sushi places in Anchorage. This one was full of many ingredients, pickled, crunchy and good size. Not all avocado like some. Surprised at the free snacks at the beginning, so I got a little full. Salad, cold noodle salad, edamame, and soup. Good service and happy to see the owners there and working. read more
