It does the trick if you're hankering for a crunch roll. This is a small, cute place that's great for a quick bite, lunch, a casual date, or to bring a friend to eat and chat. It's probably best for takeout though. I'd like to try other rolls in the future and see if my taste buds will sizzle with delight. I will say the sweet potato tempura was sadly disappointing and the spicy mayo was tooooo spicy for my taste. Otherwise service was helpful and I'd give this place another go sometime. read more

Always love stopping here on our way out to the valley! Great food and great service!!! My husband always gets the same dish- spicy chicken teriyaki (which they always remember) and I like to change it up each time. Love their rolls, their tempura and rice dishes. Dining in 7/12/24, 6pm. It was hopping and they were in top of handling their dining room and takeout orders. Several folks came in to pick up orders and were greeted by name as obvious regulars. That says something. I've been eating here for at least 8 years and visit often for takeout or a favorite meet spot with friends. I LOVE Tempura Express. I have never been disappointed. At first I worked my way through their rolls when I discovered sushi. Best prices I have found in town for delicious rolls. All of them are outstanding, filling, prepared happily with adjustments and are artfully displayed. Repeat orders besides the rolls include: Sides- eggrolls, gyoza, crispy tofu, stuffed mushrooms (my friend's fave), and fried Oreos that never disappoint the table. Entrees/combos- beef bulgogi, sesame chicken, chicken or pork katsu, curry chicken, all the tempura and any of the yakisoba. It's easy to mix and match their selections and there is so much to choose from. As with any restaurant in Anchorage they have had to adjust to inflation and have done so while remaining a great value among competitors. The owners are an absolute delight. Very friendly and gracious, often above and beyond. To the right of the order counter, there is a small cooler with fresh homemade jars of kimchi you can purchase and it is amazing. Grab one to eat with your meal or take home for your fridge but definitely grab one. read more

Was craving some Chinese food and Yelp recommended Tempura Express. Ordering was super simple. You can place your order online and there are many options and areas to write in substitutions. We got two specials and some chicken fried rice. My order was ready in 15 minutes and was still piping hot by the time I got home to enjoy it 10 minutes later. The Mongolian beef was super good! Sesame chicken had a lovely sour twang to it. The sweet and sour chicken had HUGE chunks of pineapple in it and a good amount of sauce. The chicken fried rice hit the spot as well. I am so full and happy. I will definitely order from Tempura Express again. Looks like a mom and pop run business. Very clean and welcoming. I recommend giving them a try. read more

We have lived in Anchorage for many years. We have been over to this area many times and never found this establishment. We pride ourselves as foodies. We found this establishment and we are impressed. First, the service was fast and very friendly. This is important to us. We started our dinner with mushroom poppers, seafood tampura and veggie tampura. They were fresh and very good. I had the spicy pork and it was very good. The portion was a good size. It was not overly spicy but had a nice kick. My wife had the express combo and she was impressed by it. She said that it was very good. We also tried their kimchi. We liked it. Very rare to get 5 stars as a food place from me. I had a craving for sushi and the husband had one for Hawaiian. We met in the middle and came here for the teriyaki chicken. Thumbs up for service, thumbs up for food, thumbs up for cleanliness, and thumbs up for ambiance. Read on for specifics, but I will just say this, just try it. It's great. I had the tempura express combo plate. It came with a crunch roll, teriyaki chicken and rice, salad, tempura medley (normal shrimp onion and sweet potato), with side of ginger and wasabi. My husband had chicken combo plate. It was our first time so we also ordered gyoza and side of tempura sweet potatoes. Came to about $45. I won't front, at first I was like "yea for two meals that's a lot. I won't make it back here often". But boy was I wrong. It's a TON of food! If you sit down to eat they bring you miso soup. So good! Actually flavorful. I hate tofu, but I ate the crap out of that soup. The gyoza was fried. Not my favorite, but the sauce and the filling made it so good! Tempura was great too. Not like those places where the sweet potato is still hard and undercooked in the middle, but perfectly golden on the outside. Chicken was great. Not dry. Very flavorful. Now for the best part! The menu is very diverse! There are so many good choices on the menu. Being pregnant, I can't have sushi unless it's cooked (which isn't much fun). The crunch roll is so good! A lot of times the toll that comes with your food is not very tasty, normally bland and inexpensive to make. Not this one. It's great for someone who can't have the raw stuff. The flavors aren't muddled together and it's not three pieces of a roll. It's probably more than half of one! You've got to try this place if you haven't. read more

As the waitress serving my plate I was disappointed with the meat portion, but the taste and fresh ingredients kinda compensate for it. However, the tempura express had a lot more and was served bento style. I should have ordered the express as the portion was way bigger and it would cost just a dollar more - my point try the tempura express. I told my wife I had to taste her plate for the sake of providing an accurate yelp review. So the crunchy sushi was decent, tempura was better than expected (a piece of onion, potato, pot sticker), and surprising the sticky rice was perfectly made. This place was pricey for an informal lunch setting, but it is a good place to hit up once in a while. Let me also add that they could use extra help to run the dining area, asian lady was taking orders on/off the phone and serving meals. I thought a frisbee landed on my table. read more

I completely love this place. In fact, this is easily my favorite Japanese Restaurant in Anchorage. Why? 1. They don't mess up your order. The lady in charge is sharp and very friendly. She is always happy to see us when we come in. 2. I'm weird about salad dressings. I like a slightly sweet-ish creamy dressing for my salad because it mixes well when I do up my concoction of sashimi, soy sauce, ginger, wasabi, salad, and rice. I really love the salads they do here because they throw in little pieces of tempura potatoes. Those add a special touch in addition to the fact I absolutely love their salad dressing. 3. Sushi is always fresh as is their tempura, which has the uncanny ability to actually remain crispy for the hour ride home to Palmer! 4. This is one of the few Asian establishments that has a very comfortable dining area so that when we're not getting our food to go, we actually enjoy dining in. Everything I've ever had from these guys is fantastic. Easy 9-10/10 on everything. The ONLY thing this place is missing is authentic Japanese Ramen. Other than that, now that we live in Palmer, this is one of our go-to Anchorage Restaurant destinations. For those curious, this little place SHOULD have been included in that recent article written about Anchorage Strip Mall Restaurants which are actually Hidden Gems. Being that they're located on Mountain View Drive right near Bass Pro Shop, the locale might fend off would-be patrons.... I strongly suggest you get over that and try em' out. If I could rate 0 stars I would. I ordered more than 4 items from their menu last night and got it delivered. My bill was over $70. My food got there and everything tasted great except my KALBI short ribs were not cooked all the way and had a weird odor. I took one bite and they were bloody. I called this morning to let them know and the lady said she's so sorry that happened to me but she can't do anything about it since I got the order delivered and not picked up!? Last time we ordered I got an express combo- tempura was good, gyoza good, beef teriyaki was awful, ended up throwing it away. Fried rice was mediocre... I wouldn't order it again. If you like spicy food (and I mean s p i c y) food try the spicy pork bulgogi for sure. Painfully spicy but so delicious. The tempura is good and not too heavily breaded, so it's easy to enjoy without filling up too quickly. Delivery is quick and eating in is equally enjoyable. read more

This is a great little Asian restaurant. Nice portion sizes for a reasonable price and the food is delicious! Today we got that with the #1 combo which includes Mongolian beef but also has sesame chicken which was sweet with a little crunch to it. So conveniently located near a lot of businesses...or near Merrill field, if you are flight seeing our just a pilot or person needing good,tasty food to go ( on your flight) or to eat in. I love love love TEMPURA EXPRESS! Their sushi is so good and by far the most fairly priced in town! My husband loves their fried rice and a few other things off the menu like the sesame chicken. My ONLY complaint is they won't deliver to my house even if I offer to pay extra for delivery and I'm not on that side of town often so I don't get to go as often as I would like. I was super excited to get some good sushi & in Hawaii, good sushi is a given so I'm pretty sure I'm a good judge of sushi. As much as I wanted to like this place, I just didn't. I got the sashimi & sushi combo to go. The fish on both of those didn't taste fresh. I also bought the ramen & it literally tastes EXACTLY like the spicy bowl of noodles they mass produce at supermarkets. I was disappointed in the food. On the bright side, the cashier was super nice. TE used to have decent food, but my order tonight was just awful. I had beef teriyaki and a fried Twinkie. The teriyaki looked and tasted like stew meat; it was cut in chunks instead of strips and was ridiculously tough. It was drowned in the sauce, and I immediately tasted MSG. Twenty minutes later I have a terrible MSG headache, so those with sensitivities beware. The Twinkie was sad. They had put whipped cream on it while hot at the restaurant, which means it melted and the Twinkie was swimming in sweet milk soup when I opened the container. They use regular tempura batter, so not only is it not sweet, it tastes odd too. I took one bite and threw it away. We used to order delivery from TE a lot, but that was their last chance with me. I just had my first bit of food from here and I have to say, oh yes. I shall be returning. I had the Spicy Teriyaki Chicken and it was wonderful. Finally a place that isn't afraid to put a little kick into something it calls Spicy. The veggie tempura was ehh, but it is tempura so you can't expect a lot. The location is small and there are only a few seats. But with takeout and drive through (Still don't know how i feel about that) it should do pretty good. To bad the rippie place next door feels the need to claim spots in the parking lot. Talk about annoying. Next time I park there just because.
