This time was a bit of a disappointment, partially since my last 2 times here were so good, I felt safe enough to bring my very fickle husband here. You must understand, since I don't drive, this is a decision I give great thought to before I take into action. Because once my husband shuts the door on a place and says we aren't going back, that's it. He doesn't give them an ounce of grace. Their heads are on the chopping block and they're blacklisted for life. He approved of the interior. It was casual enough to be comfortable, but had some nice touches to make you forget you're in Anchorage's most "dangerous" neighborhood. We walked in and were greeted by.... Noone. We had to walk all the way to the back of the restaurant to get someone's attention and were instructed to seat ourselves. A few minutes later the same gal , swings by slaps some menus and water on the table and says not a word and disappears. Mmmm.... OK then. The same individual returns later to take our orders for drinks, apps and entrees. A short time later she returns later with drinks. Then.... nothing. No app. Then our entrees appear. No app. Then our rice. Then finally our overcooked, inedible app. Wtf. I should have refused to pay for it. Whatever. My entree was a 3.5, my husband's was a 2. The app was -1. My husband called me a liar for hyping up this place. He was pissed. Dammit. I have to take this one off my fave list, my husband will never drive me there again. Sigh. read more

Another little hole-in-the-walk gem of a place. An unassuming exterior makes it easy to drive past. But do yourself a favor and spend an hour in this place. Guarantee you will leave fat and happy! . I got the same stuff I get at most Pho houses. Fresh / Sprint Rolls, Beef Combo Pho, and Thai Tea. Rolls were good, they came with a sweet n sour dipping sauce. The Pho was excellent! It's the first time I can remember when there was just as much meat as there were noodles! Being lunch time, I ordered the small bowl. It was packed so full of brisket and flank and tripe and meatballs and tendon that I couldn't finish it all - I was stuffed. One nice touch is they the noodle are cut in half, so if you haven't quite mastered eating noodles with chopsticks, these are easy to scoop onto the spoon. A welcome touch for most Americans. :). Great service, nice place, but unfortunately average/bland food. If I could give service alone 5 stars I would, they're so friendly and welcoming. Saw they had some noodle dishes I'd never tried before so I gave it a shot. Ordered the Kao Soy and was not disappointed. They make both the broth and noodles in house. In an ironic twist of fate, I am now writing this review WITH COVID. After getting all my vaccines and eating all my wheaties and dozens of close-calls and more dozens of negative tests...I finally tested positive late last week and clocked a 102 fever. Anyway, Mekong has been my go-to place for soup to soothe my ailing throat. The newest COVID strains are much more throat-focused than the previous ones, you see, and I have a sore throat that just won't quit. The soupy salves here have saved me from severe esophageal strains. This is some of the best pho in Anchorage. My all-time favorite has always been Phonatik but...after years of and years of price increases and ever-increasing wait times there...this is probably my new favorite! I wish I could give this place 5 stars because the service is so great but I as I keep coming back, the pho broth gets more and more bland. I can barely mix my bowl of pho without the noodles all ripping apart. The noodles are too soft or overcooked, sadly and makes the noodles too short. The tendon is still very hard and could be cooked longer for that softer, chewy texture too. Although, the pad is very delicious! It's my favorite pad thai in Anchorage. I ordered it extra spicy. Hits every time! I also order the egg rolls every time I come here, and it never disappoints. Perfect amount of filling and so crispy! Love the vibes and music here. VERY fast preparation! I ordered through DD and I couldn't believe how fast the order was ready for pick up. Flavorful and it was nice to try a new (to me) place. I agree with the other Yelper that said the chicken (in my Kang Kiew Warn) tastes weird, so I picked it out and thoroughly enjoyed serving the rest over the brown rice. Overall, it is very sweet and needed more spice. I ordered medium spice because you just never know if it's American medium or Thai death medium and I have to fly out tomorrow and I didn't want to find out trying to hold it in until the fasten seat belt sign blinks off and spending the rest of the flight in an airplane restroom with the flight attendants pounding on the door telling me to return to my seat for landing. (Hello, Siam Spicy, oh how I miss your 7 levels of heat, even though I almost cried at level 4 and I'm no wimp.) The drunken noodle was a mixed bag as the roast pork belly and veggies were expertly fried and tasty, but the noodles were far too soft. Fresh rolls were just OK, but large and did come with extra sauce. I prefer them more firmly packed and more flavorful, but they were better after being refrigerated overnight. Recommend ordering extra rice with the curry. They also took extra steps to package the order for safe travel. read more

It was my first time here & will not be our last. We are moving all the way from Texas, leaving behind my parents who are from Laos & I wanted to find a place that had Laotian food that could compare to my mommas home made food. I had the cucumber salad, khao piek sen & pad Thai and I was impressed! I would highly recommend Mekong. Came back a 2nd time and then a 3rd time.. consecutively. PAD KEE MAO: 4/5 It tasted like the Pad Se Ew but with a dash of fish sauce and basil flavor. It wasn't spicy so I added the garlic chili oil that's provided on the table and it was delicious. The star is in their noodle dishes; It's the fact that the noodle is made fresh. BEEF PLATTER: 4.25/5 Seasoned really well! It had a nice sweetness but not too sweet (think Korean Kalbi style) with a strong lemon grass flavor! Love lemongrass! It comes with a side of veggies and dipping sauce. I like my beef cooked medium and it was medium well - the only downfall. Chicken Skewers: 3/5 Light curry flavored chicken with peanut sauce dip. Chicken wasn't too dry, peanut sauce was sweet. It was ok - never had this item elsewhere so I can't compare. Not an item I'd order myself but not a bad snack to share if others wanted to. Laotian Cucumber Salad: 3/5 Like my review on the papaya salad - the taste is too mild for me. It's a good intro for people who have never had these types of asian salads. These guys have gotten my pho so so right every time. Their spring rolls are outstanding. This is top notch Vietnamese food. Clear broth. Massive portions. Only complaint: I would like to see them revise or remove the panang curry as it's not quite right. Too watery. If anything they could reduce the sauce by simmering and it might be more flavorful. But it's not a Thai restaurant it's a pho shop so no problem just avoid that dish. read more

I found this spot because my usual pho spot has stopped picking up their phone. I am so glad I did because it is possibly the best pho spot in town! Broth is amazing and meatball is so tender. I also ordered the laarb chicken which was beautifully minced and delicious and I also had papaya salad Lao style. Amazing amazing. Will definitely continue ordering food here. I stopped by Mekong Pho for a quick lunch and left fully satisfied. The service was quick and friendly. The menu includes quite a selection of different cuisines (Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese) and dishes (pho, curries, noodles, rice, etc.). I really enjoyed the look and feel of the place.... bright colors, clean, inviting. I went with a standard bowl of beef and meatball pho. It tasted delicious. I found this place on Grubhub and was first pleased with the menu selection. I have my usual pho place I frequent, but thought I'd try somewhere new. Price is good, just slightly cheaper than most pho restaurants in anchorage. I ordered the fresh rolls and the beef and meatball pho. It was ok, but there were things that were a bit off. For one, the pho was not served with mint on the side and the bean sprouts were brown. I was a little disappointed with that, but nothing to cry over. The pho itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I don't know what to say.. the soup tasted watered down? Didn't have that delicious pho goodness. It was ok, but not what I expected. The noodles were not cooked right. Overcooked maybe? The meat was decent. The chicken in the fresh rolls were grounded up.. which wasn't horrible, just something I wasn't used to. Also, I wasn't given peanut sauce but, given fish sauce. I ordered the fresh rolls because I love dipping in peanut sauce.. so I was not satisfied with this order. Overall- it's an okay place. It might have been a bad night maybe.. I had high expectations from all the great reviews. They were definitely not met. I've had a lot of Thai food. This was not very good. I'm sure it's fine for the area, but compared to PNW places, it's mediocre. I mean, there were jalapeños and tomatoes in the pad kee mao. The salad rolls were bland and came with some sweet sauce rather than peanut sauce. The Thai Iced tea was way spiced yet also more bitter than I'm used to.
