Walked in randomly for a late lunch and it was awkward to say the least. We were the only ones in there and there was no music playing so it was silent other than the 2 people working the front of house, who just sat chit chatting at a table and then the entire kitchen staff came out to eat too. After about 20 minutes of us being there, they put on YouTube for music. But mind you it is us and the workers. I felt like I was intruding their break or something. I had never been here before and would have appreciated an explanation or any tips/tricks on eating what we ordered and we didn't receive any. I had heard about this place but we had never been until now. I've never been to a place like this before here or in another state. I order the beef soup with ramen. It was $18 plus $3 for ramen. It had mushrooms, cabbage, corn, carrots, spinach?, tofu, beef, tofu skin, and other veggies probly. I didn't really like the beef it was chewy. The tofu was plain and didn't have any flea or from the broth. The ramen wasn't very many noodles. The crab rangoons were pretty good. Also got a Chinese donut which was thinly fried dough which was good to dip in the broth. We were craving some good authentic Asian food and Hott Spot definitely hit the spot. We ordered the beef hot pots and they came with plenty of veggies. And we upgraded to the vermicelli noodles for a small charge which was worth it. The hot pots come assembled for you with all the food inside and they light the fire for you. Then you just tell them when you want the flame put out. We added our own noodles and they cooked pretty quickly so we only needed the fire on for a few minutes since it's pretty intense. Good thing I had my hair up in a ponytail! They have a condiment station with items such as cilantro, sauces and garlic flakes that is self service. Like the other reviewer, easy 10/10. Started with crab rangoons, perfectly crafted with what tasted like fresh filling, served with a side of sweet chili sauce. Then bowls of beef and combo soup arrived, served on little stoves. We opted for the vermicelli noodles. Plunk those in the soup, stir as it boils and cooks, and chat with your companion(s) about goings-on. After a bit, my technique was to pull bits of meat & veggies out onto my plate to cool before eating. Eventually the fire goes out and the soup is ready to devour using a spoon. Their homemade hot sauce was awesome on the Pork Sticks and added to the soup. It's a great presentation just look at their pot pics! Those bowls cime on a hot burner with burner fuel. It soon comes to a boil! It was fun, great lunch. It's kind of like a cross between Shabu Shabu and Pho. My Tom Yum broth was SOOOOO GOOD! Richard's broth was really unique he liked but when he tasted my Tom Yum with that lemon grass flavor, we were hooked! It's a divey kind of place, with no alcohol but will be doing this place for lunch again! You can add items like squid, chicken, pork, brisket, shrimp and chose between rice, ramen, vermicelli as your soup add. How the soups here work is that: they come out lukewarm. You add your noodles to them, and they heat up at your table. But, eventually, you need some help. I was very excited to try Hott Spot I mean what Alaskan doesn't like big bowls of hot soup? Seriously. My coworker and I agreed that this was the place to try for the week so we met up for dinner. She and I ordered the crab Rangoon to share. They were very delicious. The sauce that came with it was the perfect compliment to the savory cheesy friend goodness. We both ordered the curry pot but I got my vegetarian style and medium spice while she got regular and no spice. I very much enjoyed the presentation. It was very appetizing. Unfortunately the curry lacked flavor, spice and toppings. It seemed very expensive for what I got in my bowl. I think I paid for a lot of cabbage and carrots with a bit of tofu and tofu skin (weirdly really good). You can add more toppings for an additional cost but a vegetarian soup for $15.95 without adding seems like a lot to me to begin with. I think you're mostly paying for the presentation. My friend and I agreed that we appreciated the effort and concept of Hott Pot but felt it wasn't quite worth it. Be sure to come here when you're not starving because service is a little slow and you have to wait for the soup to cook fully when you get it at the table. It comes out lukewarm and the veggies are still raw. Wait a bit for the broth to get a little bubbly before digging in. A note on service- Our waitress was so friendly and helpful but she was the only one on the floor seating, taking orders, serving, refilling water cups, making drinks, cleaning up and distributing checks. To say the least it was a little slow but understandably so. So be patient with service here. Overall, while I think it's a great new-ish restaurant in town serving up a unique cuisine, I don't think I'll be back any time soon because the food did not captivate my tastebuds and it was not quite worth the cost to food quality/quantity ratio. Perfect rainy day date night spot. First timers, I tried not to stare at other couples but I had no idea what I was doing. Definitely won't bring my toddler as she is a leap before she looks sort of kid and there is an open flame. But this would impress my teenager. I have never received food at a restaurant that was ready to eat, but as dinner went along, became too hot to eat... Yet that is exactly what happened at The Hott Spot. At this restaurant you receive and already warm (hot even) bowl that sits on a little stove. You just let them know when it's hot enough for you. It's a neat experience! I've also looking for a place where I can get Pho-like soup where they let me add additional ingredients. Most places don't allow additions. Here they bring out bowls of the extra ingredients so you see just how much extra you're getting. One of the coolest things at the restaurant is their little hot sauce bar. It has all sorts of chili pastes and garlic, and even sugar (maybe for the donuts?). The server, however, didn't mention the little bar. I only became aware of it because I went past it on the way to the bathroom (which was super clean btw). I'll definitely be back to this delightful little restaurant when I'm in Anchorage. read more

Went to the hott spot yesterday with the some friends and it was fun. My brother is always harping about hot pot which is huge around the Austin Area. Finally decided to give this a try. The egg roll appetizer was fantastic. They spring roll wraps were especially crispy and fried to perfection. The flavors on the inside was perfect. Some people get a little heavy handed with ginger, but these were seriously 10/10 good. The hot pot was okay. So I tend to have a pretty open palette but there's a few things I actually hadn't tried yet and did in their house pot. I know tofu seems to be an acquired texture and I didn't get it. If you like it, then even better for you. The items in the pot were interesting but I probably should have made my own selections because the fake crab was a bit overwhelming and seemed to overtake the flavor of everything else. I'd definitely recommend adding an egg and the broth needed soy sauce, but it wasn't bad. Would I recommend going? Yes. The staff was great, the ingredients used were good, and the prices were pretty average anchorage dining prices. Would I go back? No. I look forward to giving this dish a try again, but I'd rather elsewhere with more of a selection of broths. Also as a tip if you do go, mild wasn't a very flavorful broth- definitely opt for medium or higher. Kept wishing I had hot sauce but the staff was pretty busy so never had the chance to ask. The broth was a bit bland, after adding in their sauces it was much better! I was sad because the corn was not sweet at all and the vegetables weren't as fresh, but I do wanna highlight them for the amount of seafood they included. CRAB RAGOONS - My husband loves cream cheese so we had to get this. There was a lot of extra crispy wontons compared to the amount of crab in this ragoons. The taste was there and it was a good touch before our hot pots came out. CUSTOMER SERVICE - My food came out pretty quick and the waitress was friendly. Pescatarian asked about the seafood pot broth and learned it is seafood and chicken broth. With each pot there is the choice of ramen, vermicelli or white rice. You can specify the level of spice for your pot. Asked and if you don't eat specific items in a bowl they can accommodate and not put in the pot. Family members had the Red Curry, pescatarian had the tofu with shrimp, I had Red Curry with udon noodles. It was very tasty. The sauce station is limited and expected more options, like peanut sauce. read more

I was heavily craving hot pot from the fall weather and found this gem. It's a little different from the typical communal hot pot -- everyone gets their own personal cauldron. (Super COVID sensible!) The food: I had the sinigang, the rest of my party had the Kalbi, ramen bowl, curry soup & beef soup. I gave it a 3 star because the food was mediocre. The sinigang had a very potent fish sauce taste. I couldn't taste the tamarind at all because it was SO heavy on the Patis. Our waitress was super nice, explained everything I didn't understand and we wound up ordering beef sticks and Tom yum soup. Our beef sticks came out first, I believe they're marinated in lemongrass and they are wonderful! My soup was incredible. I got vermicelli noodles to go with, and the flavor was just spot on. It had just the right amount of cilantro too. There were HUGE chunks of crab, tons of squid and prawns that were gigantic. Dude, I'm not sure about the couple of haters, but this is some fine soup in a bowl. Service is great too. I've had the beef soup and the red curry and both were delicious. I am now a fan of quail egg after going there with my sister and she ordered it. They were perfectly soft boiled and when you throw them in the boiling soup they come out sufficiently warmed. The girl that served me both times is very sweet and I look forward to seeing her again when I bring another friend to try this place out tonight. I did have to have the little fire lamp dowsed about mid-meal both times, but it's a great soup warmer. For those who talk about Seattle and LA and wherever having better food, c'mon man, you're not there, you're here where this style of food is limited, so it's as good as it gets. I have attached the house pot from my first visit... so I must say, it was not my favorite, it wasn't full I've flavors just basic stock with veggies and meat.... but because I love giving places a second try I decided to try the Red Curry pot and let me tel you... it was absolutely amazing. I'm seriously in love with all the flavors!! The service is a little slow, and the shop is pretty small, but overall it definitely deserves 5 stars!! Really good new hot pot place in NE Anchorage. There are many options for you to add onto the soup options. This is not a traditional hot pot place where you add everything into the soup at your table. The bowls come prep'd and ready to cook at your table. Each bowl has its own mini burner it comes on and the coals burned for the perfect amount of time. I got the beef soup with ramen noodles. You can also get rice or vermicelli (thin Vietnamese noodles used in pho). Other than add-on's and sauces, all other ingredients except the rice/noodles are in the bowl when it's brought out. My bowl was amazing and I think the price was fair for the product, good service and location. I appreciate the manager, he noticed an error his staff made and fixed the issue professionally.
