I've been wanting to check out Mama Carol's Soulfood, and finally had the opportunity to do so. This spot is a casual eatery with counter service, but there are plenty of tables if you want to dine in. It is not a full service sit down restaurant though & the atmosphere is very relaxed. It's located on the Eastside right off the Boniface exit. This was formerly Roscoe's, but the current owner took over from her brother & rebranded the restaurant in December of 2023. I ordered the fried chicken (thigh, wing, drumstick) which comes with two sides (I went with Mac & cheese, yams) as well as a choice of cornbread or dinner roll. They were running a Juneteenth special that also included a dessert & drink so I added on a sweet tea and sweet potato pie. This special was a great deal price wise as well. The chicken was excellent--well seasoned, crispy skin with juicy and flavorful meat. The yams were melt in your mouth, and the Mac & cheese was nice & creamy. This food was so comforting and delicious. Portion sizes are also generous. Service was quick and friendly. It was busy when I went in, but my food was ready in a very reasonable time. If you are looking for a spot for soul food then you need to check out Mama Carol's! Next time I'm getting the oxtails.

The food we ordered fresh cooked from the kitchen was very good. I had catfish & my husband had fried chicken. Both were well seasoned and not at all greasy. We went about 4:30 in the afternoon and the food and sides in the glassed warmer looked very tired and not at all appealing so we made sure to order items that would come out of the kitchen freshly cooked. I wouldn't have eaten here if they didn't have fresh cooked options.

First time going to Mama Carol's and I'm mad I haven't gone sooner. I'm from New Orleans so I take soul food kinda serious. I'd been craving some catfish for a while so I made an impromptu decision and stopped by. The catfish was fried to perfection and seasoned great, it reminded me of home. The greens was good too! Also, the customer service was top notch! The ladies that worked there were sooooo nice and welcoming! They offered me a sample of the oxtail soup and I almost melted it was so good. Mr Roscoe was there and he came out and greeted people, which was really nice. I'm definitely coming back!

Just moved to Alaska 3 weeks ago, and we're all about finding the best food. Being a true southern girl, I'm always on the hunt for soul food. After a quick Google search, I stumbled upon Mama Carol's and based on the reviews, I was in for a treat. My family stopped by on a Saturday evening. We were welcomed with smiles and great music (Teddy P's Love TKO was on). I ordered the catfish plate with okra, mac n cheese, cornbread, and peach cobbler. My partner also ordered the catfish plate but opted for collard greens, yams, a dinner roll, and Koolaid. WE ATE IT ALLLLLLLLLLL!! Everything was so good, we wanted to go back the next day. The only thing that stopped us was the fact that they're closed on Sundays, lol. Take it from this Georgia girl and Alabama boy, Mama Carol's is the place to be for soul food in Anchorage and probably the entire state. We will definitely return!

I don't usually leave reviews but I just had to for this place. Small family owned restaurant. Loved seeing the kids helping out their parents at the restaurant. Took me back to my childhood. Most importantly it was an incredibly delicious meal! Found Mama Carols Soul food on yelp and got there about 40min before closing. I went for the Oxtail but unfortunately they were all out. Decided to go with the beef ribs +sides and lemon pepper wings. Let's start with the wings - they were lemon pepper wet - so good and flavorful. I like my lemon pepper flavor to be tangy and this one was it. My mouth is salivating right now writing this. Now the beef ribs were even better. Such good flavor, tenderness, smokiness/bark. Man I was impressed! They were also pretty big! The bbq sauce on top was very good as well. Lastly, the sides were on point! Mac n cheese and greens were so good. Corn bread was a bit dry but could be from being close to closing time. I would recommend this place to everyone. Everything was delicious and tasted homemade. I did not expect to eat such great soul food in Alaska. I will definitely be back the next time I'm out here for work.

My sister, my niece, and I ordered from here for the first time and we got the pork ribs, cheeseburger, hotdogs, baked beans, macaroni salad, and potato salad. The only problem was the hotdog just way too small to be worth $9.50, even if it comes with a small bag of chips. But, the flavor was freaking amazing! It tasted exactly like a barbecued hotdog should. It was totally worth it for me this time because she's amazing and is very generous! But as a regular basis thing, I'd go for it if money was no issue for me lol. Times are hard and inflation is high, so I get the higher prices, but I gotta watch me walket too. That's it. Only complaint lol. Otherwise is was freaking great! The sides were really good and flavorful. The macaroni salad was the most flavorful Ive ever purchased, as they are usually pretty bland. But all other macaroni salad has been trash compared to theirs lol. The potato salad was really good and the beans were super yummy! The hamburger was pretty good, lots of cheese, but we had to do some surprise errands and the box bounced around. We didn't get to eat until an hour later, so it soaked up all the juice from the pickle and was soggy with the juices of everything else by the time we got to it. Our fault, and it was still pretty good lol. But the ribs... My gracious. They were AMAZING! One of the reviews said they were dry and with lots of fat but I find that impossible. True, they weren't smothered in BBQ sauce in every crevice but even the non-covered parts were outrageously flavorful and perfectly moist. Maybe that person just doesn't normally eat pork ribs? There is bound to be some fat but on all of the many ribs we got, there was plenty of meat and the fat was minimal, and I was thankful lol. I hate a lot of fat, and it just wasn't anying more than normal pork ribs would have. But they definitely tasted better than normal lol. Just phenomenal! I'd spend my last $20 on that lol. But I, personally, would ask for extra BBQ sauce. Not because they are stingy with it or anything, I just.... I don't eat my food with some sauce, I eat my sauce with some food. I hate dry food lol. Which is why I can confidently say their ribs are not dry by any means! My sister and niece thought they were perfect, and my sister didn't want any ribs when I ordered lol. And most importantly, they are so super nice, and very generous! Very personable and great with communication. If the customer service isn't good, then it doesn't matter how good the food is and they certainly deliver in that, as well. Just an all in all fantastic experience. 5/5 stars. Would definitely recommend! *Update* I just had the left overs for dinner and it was still delicious the next day!

I ordered the chicken dinner with yams and collard greens. The chicken was made fresh, so it took about 30 minutes to get my order. They just took my number and called me when it was ready. I am glad that my food was made fresh, because the food that they had on the line was scary looking. It had definitely been there for awhile. I would recommend getting your drinks from the Speedway next door. They have a better selection and are a bit cheaper. My meal was delicious. The chicken was tasty, hot and fresh. The collards and yams, even though not the best that I have had, were tasty as well. The chicken though was up there with the best I have had. This is a decent place to get your Alaskan soul food. I wish that the location was a little better though. I was teetering between a 3 and 4 star ratting, but the food tipped it to a 4. On my very first visit, they asked what flavors I liked, and I told them "sweet and savory"--and they nailed it. Ever since then, it's been my regular. I always think about trying something new, but I can't help coming back for that combo--it's just that good. Today, Leer mentioned they were exploring opening new locations, and I told her Fort Worth would absolutely love a place like this. With the owner being a veteran and Fort Worth having such a strong military community, I know people there would rally behind it. We love supporting our own. Also, if you really listen, the music playing in the background is all original--and every track tells a story about the restaurant's culture, energy, and mission. That level of intention just makes the experience even more special. All in all: great people, great food, great energy. Hopefully we'll meet again in Fort Worth! Editing to add a BIG shoutout to the man running the window that food gets picked up from. I saw him let a customer (who looked like he was wearing a kufi) know that the Mac n cheese was cooked in bacon grease. The customer was unaware of this and was grateful and changed his order. That kind of cultural awareness and honesty shows that place isn't just about great food--it's about heart.

The seafood pasta had a good flavor and loaded with seafood, truly the one meal I enjoyed. The fish and chips had 3 large portions of halibut, with a heavy fried batter, and average fries.
