This place is a so great! I have eaten here every other time I have visited Anchorage. It's on Spenard road which is not the nicest part of town but definitely worth the trip. The family that owns and operates this gem is Greek and they are not only amazing cooks, but they care about their community!! I have been there eating several times this winter and obviously homeless people would come to the door and be given water, hot soup, half a sandwich, etc. that just made me love this place more. Now to the food. First of all I had the meatball sub which was not only delicious but super filling. The meat was very well seasoned, and the fresh basil just made the marinara pop even more, add the freshly shaved Parmesan cheese and you've got something special. The homemade bread puts this thing into overdrive! Crispy on the outside, light, delicate but not falling apart and heavy enough to hold together all that deliciousness without being filling like you just ate a large pizza. Now to the ridiculous tomato basil soup. I love the clam chowder but the tomato basil is my favorite. Savory, full of flavor, smooth, creamy and not greasy. This in my opinion is the perfect pairing to the meatball sub. You're welcome! The customer service here is amazing too just like the owners and the food. You will always be greeted by a smiling face, and treated like family. You will not regret stopping here. First time trying Sofia's. We came on a Friday around 11:45am. Lots of people in and out on their lunch break. Only about 5 tables with seats at the bar. I ordered the BLT and had the chicken lemon soup The soup was very lemony and salty but I ate the whole bowl it was pretty good. The BLT had too much lettuce on it and a couple pieces of bacon but it was your standard white bread-mayo- bacon-lettuce-tomato. Prices not bad when the sandwiches come with soup or salad. Trivia: Agaricus bisporus is a species of what three types of mushrooms? This place is so high level. Just wow. I was not prepared for the salad bar layout and selection. So many delicious options. I don't think Ive seen the likes of it since the old school Ponderosa/Golden Corral/Sweet Tomatoes salad bar days. The Greek chicken with a baked potato was out of this world as well. Now I understand the hype! Sofias is a family-owned spot tucked in the corner of Minnesota and Spenard. We stopped in for lunch around the holiday season and sat at the bar. There were a ton of people coming in to pick up to-go orders but the woman at the front served every customer with ease, positivity and professionalism. I was really impressed. The food was excellent and portions were big. I opted for the avocado BLT with the salad bar option. I loved the variety of the salad bar and the homemade dressings. The ranch was a great complement to my BLT. My partner raved about the clam chowder. One of the hottest new lunch spots in town is Sofia's Restaurant in Spenard! It's located on Lois drive off of Spenard Rd & is a great place to grab a hearty or healthy meal. The sandwiches come with your choice of soup, or 1 trip to the salad bar for $16, which is a fantastic deal. This restaurant has a small dine in area including a counter top area. There's even a few tables for outdoor dining. Service was quick & friendly. I went in & ordered to go. Food was ready quickly! I ordered the Philly steak sandwich with a side of Avgolemono soup. The sandwich was excellent; the only thing is it is not a traditional Philadelphia cheesesteak. It's a steak sandwich with sautéed onions, bell peppers & mushrooms. The sandwich has actual thick cut chunks of grilled steak (instead of shaved ribeye) in it that are well seasoned & flavorful. So even though it's called a Philly it's not actually a Philly steak--it was tasty though. The bread was also very good & tasted fresh baked. Portion size on the steak was generous. The soup was also a great sized portion. I love avgolemono (Greek lemon chicken soup), and thought this one was decent just a bit under seasoned for my taste, but that was easily fixed. Great food and amazing service. We ordered the Philly steak sandwich which came with a soup and salad bar. The sandwich and salad were great, the clam chowder was good as well. Everything came in very large portions. When we asked to order a soup and premade salad, the waiter let us know that the sandwich came with both, and that the salad bar was popular as it let you choose anything you want. Definitely saved us some money. We all got bottled water instead of tap which was great. The tables also have sea salt and pepper you can freshly grind yourself. The waiter asked if we wanted some horseradish sauce and dipping broth with the sandwich as well, and it was great. Made a bit of friendly conversation as well. OMG.. My wife and I flew several thousand miles from Honolulu to Anchorage and stumbled across this small little restaurant with BIG aloha as "Paul" provided the sense of 'ohana. The Gluten-free option was an ultimate plus and the out-of-this-world salad bar was crazy delicious. My wife had the BLT in "gf" bread and I had the run of the mill spaghetti with marinara sauce. NOTHING... I mean nothing was "run of the mill"... the food was super over-the-top 'ono (delicious), the service was warm and expedient, and the atmosphere made me feel like I was in a cozy restaurant in Hawaii with local "Jawaiian" music playing in the background. Picture a big family get together, now picture your relative that makes the tastiest dishes...that's what this place is like! We've been to Sofias Restaurant a couple of times now - mainly because when I've been binging on carbs too much (actually that happens way too often) i occasionally just have a real hankering for a nice big salad, and there's not too many places have a salad bar these days. New Sagaya is a pretty good one, but i always consider New Sagaya to be a lunch place. Sofias is more a dinner place. And you can get the salad bar as your side to accompany your main entree item. Their menu features various salads, sandwiches, steak or chicken with a sauce, or some pasta dishes. We have both gotten a sandwich each time, and you get a choice of side - with 1 choice being a trip to the salad bar, and i think soup was the other choice. Both times I've chosen the salad bar, because it has a huge range of items, and they give you a pretty big bowl - but you may only visit the salad bar one time. You can get an enormous amount of things in your salad, if you only put a little bit of each thing in your bowl, and there's everything, i mean everything you could want. I think I'd be better served JUST opting for the salad bar, which is $15. As for the sandwiches. I'm somewhat on the fence about those. I just don't love them. They are humongously large sandwiches. But i need more flavour, and i just somehow felt mine was a little lacking. I seriously cannot fault the salad bar at all. Everything is very fresh, crisp, attractive, tempting, and i just want a bit of this and a bit of that. But my BLTA (I've had it twice now) was average, and i don't even like to say that, when my favourite part of the meal was so good. It's not going to stop me going back, but I'll maybe try something different or just stick to the salad bar, which is worth going for, all on it's own. Drinks come served in their original container, and you are also served a bottle of water, as opposed to a glass. I do like that. The staff are lovely too, and this is why i want to continue giving them my business. I feel they are hard working, and small business, and will benefit from my supporting them. I do like pasta so maybe i will try that next time. read more

Walking in, I was struck by the cool local diner vibe---just a little bit divey, but not too much. I was not pleased with being served a plastic bottle of water. This is 2025 and we all know better. I ordered the lasagna which was not really lasagna. I picked at it and ate maybe a third. My dining companion had soup and salad which looked like a better choice. My other dining companion who is vegetarian and doesn't eat tomatoes was having a hard time finding anything on the menu to her liking, the waiter was able to improvise a sort of pasta primavera for her which I thought was very classy. He brought it with spaghetti noodles rather than the fettuccine he had suggested. Everything was served "to go" including disposable cutlery. It looks like maybe the kitchen is too small to accommodate dishes or a dishwashing setup. Or maybe they just can't meet their price points and pay a dishwasher, too. What a hidden gem! The resteraunt is very clean, light and bright, and the owners are extremely friendly! I had the lentil soup, which they brought me a sample of first. It was one of the best lentil soups I've ever had. Delicious!! I also shared a French Dip sandwhich, which was delicious, and enormous. The bread was fresh, not dry. Great sandwhich for you French Dip lovers. And.....if you like soda, they have both Pepsi and Coke - most places offer only one of the two. I highly reccomend this resteraunt. This is my favorite spot in Anchorage. Very unassuming location and you just have no idea until you eat there. One word ( Fantastic). I try to tell everyone about this spot, excellent food and excellent prices. Go very hungry portions are large, and they definitely have the best salad bar in town. The bacon was old over cooked bacon and the clam chowder was the nastiest I've ever tasted. It was the consistency of thick mash potatoes and over powered with garlic! Don't taste the clams! Spaghetti was cooked to order so took a little longer for pasta dishes. The Philly cheesesteak was amazing. The beef was seasoned to perfection. The sandwich is big enough to satisfy almost anyone. The BLTA was thick and delicious. Throw in the salad bar and it is a great deal. The place has 4 tables and a bar for 4-5 more. It use to be a pizza place years ago so the decor is very minimal but the service was fast and very friendly. I believe this will now be one of my favorite lunch spots. Everything, this is a small mom and pop place (literally) but it is so welcoming. It has a moderate but very good menu and it has a true salad bar which seems to be pretty much passé everywhere else! The location had a few people there mostly at the counter upon arrival but as we had dinner so many locals appeared for takeout and the tables filled.
