For years this was the premier sandwich place in town, at least in my opinion. I would've confidently put them up against anyone. I used to plan my days out knowing I could swing in for lunch. Their sandwiches and bread were always fresh, and their attention to detail when making sandwiches always justified the teeny bit of extra cost above their competitors. Most of all the service was always reliable. Years later though, while there are some aspects of the past that remain (customer service being a mainstay), the sandwich quality and attention to detail seem to have fizzled. The bread is still great, but I can't say the same for the rest of the sandwich. Keep in mind I've been a customer there for going on 20 years now. However, over the last several years I have drastically cut back eating there because of the changes. Every time I go back I tell myself this time will be like the old days, yet it seems I always end up questioning why I didn't just go somewhere else. Don't get me wrong they are still a better option than subway, but the gap isn't a fraction of what it used to be. Will I go back, I'm sure I will at some point. I can honestly say I haven't had a sandwich at Sara's in easily 20 years. Yikes... talk about agin myself! We needed to have lunch delivered to work today for me and my husband and went with Sara's for ease, recommendation and remembering how good they were. We went with a #13 Italian Combo and #14 American Combo. Both were tasty and we were pleased with the portions of meat, cheese and veggies. Decent size sandwich too, not too big that I could only eat half and not too small to leave me hungry. My only gripe really is the one hour delivery time. I read several reviews that stated an hour and even calling at 10:15am, it was still an hour out for delivery... and an hour on the nose too! I won't hesitate to use them again but definitely have to plan ahead to ensure you give yourself an hour before your lunch break! read more

After the disappointing meal I had from a previous review, I can gladly add a positive one to the mix after a recent lunch. Sara's Sandwiches is a popular lunch spot located in the industrial area of Arctic off of International Airport Rd. to your left as you're going southbound towards the Dowling Rd. bridge a few doors down from Woo-Hoo Ice Cream. The place was modestly busy but the dining area quickly filled up a few minutes after walking in. The dining room itself is not that large, but big enough to accommodate enough diners for the lunch rush. Paper menus are available for customers at the counter where an employee takes your order by circling the specific ingredients you want on your sandwich. A detailed list is provided for the types of meat, cheese, veggies, bread, and condiments you would like in the custom section of the menu. Aware that the place was filling up rapidly, I didn't want to build the line up behind me. The promotion they had was Souper Saturday. When you order any sandwich on the menu, you get a free 8 oz. cup of soup. I decided to go with the Triple Combo Sub with wheat bread off the order-by-number selection with the ingredients already listed (ham, turkey, roast beef, cheddar, provolone, Swiss, mayo, mustard, lettuce, and tomato) along with a side of macaroni salad. I was glad I chose this. By the time my sandwich arrived, there was already a steady line forming close to the door. The sandwich was delicious with an enormous amount of meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. I only wished I had more mayonnaise, but all the ingredients combined perfectly for a very filling meal. A hearty side of free Vegetable Beef Barley soup made the perfect complement for the sandwich on a cold winter day. Seems like they just dumped things on there without spreading out evenly, lettuce was on one side and the meat was on the other. This place has been a favorite of mine for a long time. I haven't actually been in the last couple years however. As usual, it's packed out at lunch time so either get there before noon or after 1:30 unless you don't mind the rush! The soups are always fantastic! The sandwiches have always been amazing but this time it was just an average sandwich. It just didn't have the same wow factor to me. Maybe it was a one off but the staff was very quick and friendly. I don't always eat deli sandwiches, but when I do....Sara's is a very good option. I dig the personalized approach with the checkbox/circle your options form. I would like them to add an option with a French/Italian hoagie roll that has a skinny option where they cut out some of the bread. I like the hoagie style but the bread can be a little too much. There are usually just the right amount of tables when I get there around 11:30am. There are chances you might need to wait on a table or take it to go. We also get their sandwiches for some of our work lunches (seminars, training, etc). Parking can also be a little tight, but you can find a spot on the side or back if you try generally. read more

The customer service SUCKS. i ordered lunch for 3 employees today, called the BONIFACE location the girl totaled it up, and everything, said it would be a hour, 2 hours later i call and ask where my food is, she says I don't have a order for you. So now i have to re order and 3 employees don't get lunch untill say what 3 O CLOCK..... I am super disappointed in the shitty service i received today. I would like to see better quality meats though since they advertise Boar's Head throughout the restaurant. I only saw one or two higher quality meats in their case, however. Pretty dang good!! Good bread, which is often the main factor, but there's lots of it. The bread could probably be gutted and be just as good, if not better. The ratio of sauce was not perfect in my opinion because of how much bread there was... With that been said it's one of the best sandwiches i've had in town so far... I did notice that the menu here on Yelp did say that they were using boar's head meat, but I didn't see any of it in the meat case. Maybe it got too expensive.... Also like the fact that they had sprouts. They're so hard to find now days! Okay, gotta get this off my chest... This place is just......outstanding. The friendly staff (and owners) are very efficient and competent when taking orders (either by phone or in person) and will more often than not get your order to you before you can get a drink and find a seat. For such a heavy-traffic sandwich joint (during the lunch hours of 11:30-2 they're very busy) they stay very organized and maintain their stellar service. Their sandwiches/combos are very affordable (did I mention delicious??), and you can tell a lot of care went into making them. They have ingredients not found at your cookie-cutter sandwich place, which automatically makes them amazing in my book (they have alfalfa sprouts!!) So, if you're in the mood for a great sandwich place, outside of Subway and Quizno's, do yourself a favor and scope out this little place on Arctic, they won't disappoint you. -L read more

It was ok. The only reason it's getting 4 stars instead of 3 is because the service was phenomenal. This was my first visit to this joint and the girl behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. My complaints: The bread selection was missing a few items. They were out of the bread I wanted, so I had to settle with something else I really didn't want. Secondly, I ordered tomatoes... Maybe I'm picky about tomatoes, but why is it *SO* hard, for those in the food industry, to remove the center part of the tomato that no one eats? That alone will make me go someplace else. My compliments: The ingredients were fresh & wonderful. Even though I didn't get the bread I wanted, the bread I did get was soft & delicious. And even though, at first, I didn't really like the way they assembled the sandwich, it kind of makes sense. Their staff is absolutely great! My day is definitely made when I get Linda on the phone to take my order :) The customize your own is my go to. I get to be wild and crazy all while staying healthy. I love Sara's but this is ridiculous 2 hours for a sandwich to be deliver and still not even here. I have called twice. I waited an hour and they said it's out for delivery and should be here soon. Then I called back another hour in an the lady who told me the deliveries aren't taking long got upset with me when I asked if it usually takes 2 hours and since they told me it should have been there soon after the first time I called. I'm 8 minutes from the sandwich shop so I'm confused how it's taking so long and why they didn't call to let me know because I would have just picked it up. I know the sandwich will be soggy due to the condiments on it. I love Sara's but come on. This has made me never want to go back. This place was so good! There are so many choices you can get and make it whatever way you want. On Saturdays they give you free soup with a meal. They have every choice of drink you can think of which is awesome. There is not a ton of sitting places but its enough when it isn't busy. It does look like a deck in there because it is all lawn furniture which is a little sad that they cant buy just normal chairs. They use Boars head meat (stuff from Fred Meyer), it is good quality. Do not listen to Shannon's review that says they are oscar mayer cold cuts with wonder bread because neither of those facts are true. They do have deserts but I have not tried them but they look good! I cant wait to go back and try a different sandwich. They did forget my pickle which made me super sad! read more

This was my first visit here, I called my order in for pick up and went to get it. The sandwich was ready when I got there and the soup was prepared once I had arrived. I ordered an Italian combo and a small side of chili. My total without a tip was $13. So it's about average for Anchorage I'd say. The staff was nice, kind of talkative which is good or bad depending on your personality lol. They noticed they had incorrectly charged me and fixed it before I even had a chance to realize and that was very nice in my book. The portions are huge! A small chili is a large at most other places I couldn't even finish it. The sandwich is the same I could only finish half of it. As far as the chili though I was kind of disappointed, it really didn't taste like chili to me. The italian combo was alright, I didn't notice a crazy amount of toppings on it. The bread was really good, it was fresh it seemed. Other than that I mean I wasn't super impressed with it. I probably won't come back here just because it's a far drive from where I live and I wasn't blown away with the food. If I lived right around the corner though I'd probably give it a couple more tries and maybe sample something else on the menu. read more
