This place is incredibly consistent. You can always count on the freshest, most beautifully detailed pastries, delicious drinks, and friendly staff who serve you quickly. I try to visit once a week! Just a heads-up: if you arrive after 1:00 PM, they do sometimes sell out of baked goods. Everything here is amazing, especially the croissants, sandwiches, and boba. Oh Benji's, its a good thing I dont live closer or I'd be a human whale. We were on the South-sh side of town toward the end of the day and I knew full well that Benji's would be sold out if everything, but I decided to take a chance. I was right, as I walked in they sold the very last thing of what I wanted. But gosh am I glad- it forced me to try something new. I didnt take a picture because it was so cold out and my hands were frozen, but it was a beautiful, elongated bakery treat. It had lovely purple Ube cream and touch of oreo crumbs on top, the base was essential much like a flat cruller, but if higher quality. It was sensational! I bought my husband something that looked lower carb that had coffee cream that also enjoyed. I got my husband custom cold jasmine sugar free tea, and I got a frosty honeydew melon drink. I stopped by Benji's Bakery & Café in Anchorage for the first time and tried a few things. The Ube Croffle was the standout -- it was so delicious! It's like a croissant baked in a waffle form, but a bit denser than a regular croissant. What really made it special was the Ube cream -- a light, buttery frosting that wasn't too sweet. Easily a 10/10 for me. I also ordered the Ube Cruffin, which had that same croissant-like texture in a muffin shape. The inside had a light cream filling, and the top was covered with the same Ube cream. It was good, but not quite as amazing as the Croffle -- 7/10. The Ham Banh Mi was tasty and filling (6/10), and the Boba Milk Tea was decent too (6/10). Oh and I got to taste their smoked salmon chowder that my friend ordered. Very good flavor, body, and richness (8/10). Everything I had was good but nothing that was as memorable as the Ube Croffle, but it wasn't cheap -- I spent a total $32 for a sandwich, drink and 2 pastries. Stopped by Benji's for an early lunch since it was walking distance from where we were staying, and we wouldn't have a car until later on in the day. Ironically, the items I was most excited for was underwhelming while pleasantly surprised by the one I didn't expect much from. We arrived shortly after they opened to get our hands on the cruffins and ended up getting 3 total (strawberry, mango, and taro) as new flavors came out while we were eating our lunch. I did not realize that the filling is all cream on the inside and the flavor is just from the injector. So while the top portion has some of the flavor you chose, there are large parts that are just cream which ended up being too rich. The Alaskan chowder was also underwhelming as I was expecting more than a few specks of smoked salmon in it and again way too creamy and rich. The saving grace was that bread that came with it which brings me to the banh mi. We originally wanted Benji's for a Wednesday lunch, but when we arrived, we were greeted by a taped sign on the door stating they were closed for maintenance. We were disappointed after driving 20 minutes to get here, but hey, things happen and at least we still had another day in Anchorage to try Benji's out. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it until near closing the next day, when most of their pastries had run out and they were down to their last bowl of chowder! Still, we found more than enough to order and soon were chomping down on the food. Alaskan Chowder ($6.95) - The clam chowders they offer are essentially different combinations of toppings on their classic clam chowder. The Alaskan Chowder is the clam chowder base topped with smoked salmon. This chowder is THICK. Like it has more solid ingredients than liquid, making it almost like potatoes in sauce rather than chowder. The potatoes are cooked through, although on the harder side of tender. The flavor is salty and briny. There aren't too many pieces of clam, but there's overall enough seafood due to the addition of the salmon. This is a luxurious chowder chock full of solids. I don't know if their chowder is normally like this or if it's so thick because it was the last bowl of the day. The chowder is served with a half baguette, although there isn't enough liquid to dip the bread into. The baguette is definitely more Vietnamese than French, having a lighter and airier interior and an exterior that leaves crumbs all over while eating. The crust isn't quite as shard-like as other baguettes I've had, so it's not quite as messy as some other banh mi baguettes. (4/5) Pork Bit & Cha Lua Banh Mi ($12) - The banh mi includes thinly sliced julienned carrot and daikon, pickled until tangy and very crunchy and lots of bright red coarsely minced pork bits, sweet and savory, tasting similar to char siu but not quite. Slices of cha lua cover the entire baguette, springy in texture and filled with meaty fish sauce umami. Long thin slices of jalapeno, sliced on the bias, grace the sandwich, although as they don't remove the seeds or the pith, so they are quite spicy. Finally, slices of cucumber add additional crunch. There's no than enough mayo and other fatty/liquid elements that the sandwich doesn't feel dry at all while eating. Everything comes together into a nice bite. I ordered a banh mi takeout, it seems to be a typical cafe setup, not overly friendly service, and slightly overpriced. The flavor of the banh mi was good, with a large amount of what seemed to be French bread. I was left still hungry, but it was ordered and received in less than 10 minutes. Benji's is my go to spot if I want something small for breakfast/lunch. Benji's is a smaller establishment and if you don't get there earlier in the day, all of the baked goods will be sold out. I have never had their sandwiches or soup, but I hear they are very good. The atmosphere is awesome, always a crowd and they play great music. I would say it's more of a grab and go spot due to is size, but you could definitely eat in if need be. The staff is always efficient and friendly, but not overly warm, which is understandable since they're always moving so quickly. I always order the ham, cheese and jalapeño croissant and the borealis cooler. Both are amazing. I will say, this last time I ordered the croissant the style had changed, which gave me pause. When I started eating it, I noticed the taste was slightly off from previous visits so I decided to open the sandwich and found some meat that didn't resemble ham. Needless to say, I didn't and couldn't finish eating it. Huge waste of money. I would highly recommend Benji's if you're in the area. They weren't even supposed to be opened on the Tuesday we stopped by, but we were so glad they were! Perhaps being technically closed explained why the display cases were so sparse, but Benji's doesn't really need vastness of variety when they've got pitch-perfect quality. The premier pastry we divvied up next door as we waited for our lunch (I read both are owned by the same people) was a Lychee Strawberry cannoli croissant. There's no way to fully appreciate one split between 5 people, especially while in public. My advice for first-timers: Treat yourself to whole "crannoli" alone in your car, so you can enjoy the shell out of it. A buttery, but firm croissant wrapped around a sweetly fluffy and flavorful lychee strawberry whip will make you cream and shout and let it all out! That was a hard act for our other purchase to follow (picture), but the cookies and cream cruffin retained the same tasty texture and the lightness of sugar. C&C is a safe and solid starting flavor. I'm pretty bummed we didn't get a chance to try other croissant creations during our short stay, but I hope our host will take more people to Benji's after that experience. read more

Today I got lost in the Que and waited over 30 minutes for a tea that was never coming as people after me were getting theirs. They had a steady line and were busy but there setup is a little chaotic. Too many people wanting items they make in the back and people were everywhere. I feel like a lot of places are too busy on a Saturday now to go anywhere in this town! I thought they were even closed because all the open signs were off and the blinds were halfway down. Benji's cafe specializes in bahn mi sandwiches, pastries and special teas / boba and select soups. Unfortunately I have not had a great experience each visit. The first time I went, they got my sandwich wrong, refused to offer a refund or correct the mistake and provide me with a correct sandwich. The error was even verified on the recipe. The subsequent visits I have tried repeatedly to get a pork bahn mi sandwich. I've come at opening and they don't carry it that day which has been 4 times in a row with weeks/ months in between visits on various different days of the week. The last two visits I tried once mid day and once end of day, both those times they're sold out of everything but drinks. I asked the employees HOW can I get a bahn mi- they said they run out of everything except tea typically by 2 pm yet they stay open until til 7 or 8pm. This visit when I asked, they said try tomorrow they plan to cook all the pork tonight. I asked if they are open tomorrow with it behind a federal holiday. The employee said he didn't know it was a holiday and now he doesn't know IF they are even open tomorrow but IF they are, they SHOULD have pork bahn mi. This place gets extremely busy. As they never carry half their menu at all times I venture to guess people flock for the tea and early morning pastries? This is 25 minutes from my home and has not proved worth the drive. The place is small and most times no place to sit or stand. For all the above reason, I do not recommend unless you like to have tea drinks or if you're lucky enough to grab a pastry. If you want a bahn mi- you might be better off making them yourself which is what I've resorted to since this is one of the only places in Anchorage that sells them that I've found however, they are unreliable in the sales department. The food was 4/5 stars, but it was a bit odd that they ran out some of their food options so soon after opening. We arrived about 1-1.5hr after opening, and they were already out of some their bakery items. But weirdly, some of the items with a "sold out" sign over it, they were NOT sold out of... we ordered a couple banh mi, a few pastries, and finished it off with a taro coconut milk tea (75% sweet) with boba. My grilled pork my banh mi was full of tasty pork, and the fattiness was balanced well with the pickled veg, mayo, and cilantro, although it would've been nice to have more cilantro. The pastries (cheese and jalapeno and the danish) were flaky and delicious. We came back to try their strawberry lychee cream (a bit sweet for my liking). Heard and read good things about them here so we came for lunch after Christmas shopping. Not ever being here we came in out of the cold and it was warm inside. Wanted something fast and gravitated to the Bahn Mi. I ordered the pork and so did Richard. The bread is baked fresh twice daily and it was super tasty pork! Vegetables crisp and the jalapeno added a nice kick of heat! We kept looking at the baked goods and finally went and asked what they were. I found that the pastries weren't labled and heard a lot of folks while eating our sandwiches asking what's that or this. Maybe some labels on them? What Benji's does is one of a kind in Anchorage. Even though they're the only bakery serving unique flavored cruffins, giant creme puffs, and pastries they are still ensuring that they produce an amazing product. I first stumbled upon this shop on Instagram, but didn't try it until the beginning of 2020 because I'm not in the area often. During the beginning of the pandemic I made a few stops for some pick me up treats. I recently picked up some items from them again, and was reminded of just how awesome this shop is! This bakery is owned by the same people that own Phonatik, and Benji's can be found 2 doors down from their sit down Vietnamese restaurant. They serve the same delicious banh mi sandwiches as Phonatik. The bread is baked fresh daily at Benji's. The pastries are all a good sized portion, and packed with flavor. My favorite item from them is the carrot cake cruffin. The great part about Benji's is they are always trying out new flavors, or have specials so each visit to the shop something is different. Their boba drinks come in one size, and are always filled with boba. I finish the drink, and still have boba left over. I've only tried their Thai tea and matcha blaster, but thought both had good flavor, and they don't skimp on the tea. They are very active on Facebook & Instagram, and will post their specials if they plan on doing any for the day, they've recently started doing savory buns, and cookies sometimes! Stopped in yesterday for what I understood to be the "#1 Go-To" stop for my out-of-town friends...you know they say things like "When I go to Anchorage, this is the only 'Must Do' item on the agenda" so, I decided to give it a whirl. I got the Pork Banh Mi (sorry no photo)...it was everything you would ever want in a sandwich. The bread was definitely the star of the show. I love Benji's. It reminds me of the Asian bakeries I enjoy visiting in larger cities such as NYC and Boston. The cruffins (croissant muffins) are my favorite among their pastries and they come in a variety of flavors and fillings. I have yet to try the sandwiches and chowders but they look delicious as well. Customer service is excellent. I visited one night close to closing time and ordered a bubble tea and a pastry. The employee generously gave me two extra pastries. Bakery aside, they also have the best bubble tea in town. I recommend the Matcha Blast. The signature teas are good too if you want something without milk and more on the fruity side. There's no other place in Anchorage like Benji's so it has quickly become one of my favorite spots that I will frequent when I'm in the area. read more

I've been here a few times enough now to be able to review and I love it here. Their baked goods are buttery, flaky and have great flavor with the different fillings and twists. They make bobas which I like and they don't skimp on it. I would like to try their Banh Mi's at some point. We ordered a pistachio vanilla cruffin, a chocolate croissant, a ham & cheese croissant, and 2 plain croissants. All were crispy and flaky yielding to that buttery interior that croissants should have. The filling combination on pistachio vanilla was divine. We really decided to stop by on a lark - it was in the area and had 10 minutes until opening and had good reviews. As soon as we'd parked, cars started to drive up and people were lining up, so we lined up too. This place opened their doors to a line of about 40 people (all quickly served by friendly staff and ready to go in 5 minutes). We snagged some stools by the window and were impressed with A) the food (Yum!!) and B) people just kept coming! The line was still present when we left, albeit with completely different people, and everyone happily eating, so there wasn't nearly as much conversation as you would expect. Ha!
