We visited Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop on a weekday morning to pick up some pastries and sandwiches for a picnic lunch on the trail. At this time, the small parking lot was completely full, with cars lining the side of the road up to a block away. Be prepared to hunt for parking! The shop is very open, with plenty of seats both inside and out. There's also a very conveniently attached espresso bar for morning coffee since the bakery doesn't sell caffeinated drinks. AK Berry Scone ($5) - This scone includes rhubarb, blueberry, and raspberry. I love the texture of the scone. The outside is baked hard, giving a great crunchy crust, whereas the inside is similar to a nice southern biscuit, super moist and fluffy inside. The bottom crust and sides taste a little salty, while the top crust has tons of large sugar crystals baked on, giving sweetness and crunch. The berries add a nice flavor and work perfectly in the dough. Super delicious scone. (5/5) Pain au Chocolat ($5) - This croissant is super open and airy. There's a good bake on it, making it golden brown but not drying out the interior at all. The lamination is good and the texture is great. it's buttery and chocolatey from the two batons baked inside. (5/5) Salmon Salad Sandwich ($18) - This sandwich includes plenty of mixed greens, very thinly sliced cucumber, and salmon salad on a light and chewy sliced pullman loaf. The salmon is quite fragrant and the smell wafts out in a cloud while eating. It's creamy, very smoked salmon forward, and herbal with green onions and dill. It's very fresh tasting, with an additional slight tangy note from perhaps lemon juice. The bread tastes like a homemade Pullman loaf. While there are thin cucumber slices placed on top of the salad, it almost melds in to the salmon so there's not really any textural difference between the fish and cucurbit so it's more of a weak, unsatisfying texture. (4/5) While I probably wouldn't get the sandwiches again, the pastries baked at Fire Island are excellent. I'm surprised that Anchorage has such a high quality bake shop!

Great ambience. I went there on a weekday after hiking. As soon as you walk in you are met with fresh bread making batches. It was nice to see all breads were made in-house. Many options to choose from. Sadly they ran out if their sourdough when I went their in afternoon. They had two vegan soups for that day. I heard they rotate their soup selection so best to call for soup for the day. I had green peas, lentil mint corn soup. It was DELICIOUS. It came with side of bread. That's all I had for lunch and portion was enough for one person. Very filling. I had blueberry lavender cupcake and chocolate chip to go. Cupcake was so smooth and not too sweet. Chocolate chip was great too.

Honestly, if we had not known their reputation, this is probably five stars for: 1. Food quality and flavor. Both the croissant and the breakfast sandwich were great. Lots of flavor, soft or flaky. They won't be heating up your breakfast sandwich, but don't worry, being hot wouldn't make it any better. 2. Outdoor patio ambiance - for such a small location, the outdoor patio was SPACIOUS. Probably 8-10 tables and plenty of space. Three things to know that might give a person (and the pups) pause: 1. No espresso. Just regular drip coffee. No decaf, even though their menu says decaf. 2. No dogs allowed inside the gate. No tables outside the gate. There is a metal bar where you can tie up your dog, but I know few dogs that would be okay out of sight of their owners. Which means you have to leave the dog at home or put it in your car. 3. The line and ordering is awkward. And the space to order, incredibly small. I felt like I was imposing on everyone around me. And also like I had to "butt" into line so I could see the menu and reassure those there, at the same time, that I wasn't taking their spot.

Bomb!! I LOVED the breakfast focaccia. Such a light bread with delicious sausage, egg, And potatoes. The blueberry bran muffin was also perfectly moist and not too sweet.

Had a very yummy veggie breakfast sandwich. Super cute atmosphere. I hope to try more of the bakery items because they looked so good!

Adorable bakery in a residential neighborhood. They have beautiful cakes, pastries, breads and sandwiches. I only tried the pastries and they were all great. I loved the chocolate croissant, they manage to make it flaky and delicious, and not super oily! I wanted to pick up a gluten free cake for my son's birthday, but they use almond flour and he's allergic to that. They have a cute backyard area to enjoy your food and drinks. I'm glad I stopped by to try it while in Anchorage!

Traditional bakery. It's a hidden gem in a small neighborhood. Recommendation: 1. Ham & cheese scone: a must try. Everything is on the spot 2. Raspberry lemon scone: also good. But if you only have room for 1 scone, go with the savory ham & cheese one. 3. Ham & cheese croissant vs chocolate croissant: both are delicious but I'll choose chocolate croissant over the savory one.

My friend decided to take me to this yummy bakery since I was visiting and I'm so glad she did! Upon walking in, they had JUST baked some fresh crusty loaves of bread and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. The smell just wafted when the door opened and hit my face from the crisp fall weather- perfect combination. The bakery was clean and had a cozy feel to it- not too many tables but enough to seat multiple groups of people. There was also an outdoor patio/seating area but it was way too cold for us and the baby to sit outside. My favorite item on their menu has to be the chocolate chip cookie... oh my goodness. It was so smooth, rich and oh so soft when I had it! Mind you, I'm not a chocolate chip cookie person at all but this was enough to make me buy another batch of cookies for the car ride home. I also got a cherry scone but it didn't compare to the freaking chocolate chip cookie... All in all, I am going to request to come back here when I visit Anchorage. This place sure does have a special place in my heart! I can't wait to try more items off their menu!

exterior, you can see the cool patio/beer garden in the back!

What took me so long to visit this location?! This location is so good it makes me want to move to the 'hood. It feels like it's a part of the community in a way that (unfortunately) few businesses in Anchorage do. It reminds me of the neighborhood in SE Portland where you'll find a bakery or a brewery or a bar right next to someone's house. I wish we had more mixed use areas like this in town. I went here for an Anchorage Brewing beer release/fundraiser. This is incredible place to hold an event. They have a very nice "backyard" section that, again, reminds me of some of the quaint drinking establishments in SE Portland where you feel like you're drinking on someone's lawn. They also host farmer's markets here, on weeknights! Nice for those of us that are gone every weekend but still want to get some local produce. Inside is small but has all the carbalicious goodies the best bakery in Anchorage is known for!

Halibut sandwich with a spicy coleslaw

3 words--Carb lovers paradise!! This location is small, and in the Airport Heights neighborhood located among houses. Kind of a strange location, but also genius because if we lived over here I'd 100% have to stop myself from taking a walk to get a treat several times a week! This location is very neighborhood friendly--they have parking, and a small garden. It's cute! Another Alaskan business with a James Beard nominated proprietor. Great selection of different breads as well as sandwiches and sweet treats. Everything we purchased here was excellent. The baguette was crusty on the outside, but soft on the inside. The raspberry lemon scone was flaky and just the right amount of sweet. I really enjoyed it. The bread of the focaccia was excellent as well though I must admit the toppings were a little sparse for my liking. When it comes to bread these were all very delicious. I saw there were also an ample amount of sweets from cakes to macarons though I didn't sample any this trip. They also serve really great sandwiches. I had a halibut sandwich with a spicy coleslaw. It was delicious!! Loaded with fresh halibut, and served on fresh bread. Since it was halibut I didn't mind the $11 price tag, but I'm hoping their sandwiches with cold cuts are a bit cheaper. We came here on a Wednesday evening, which is when they host their summer market days with a few other local vendors. Definitely check out their market days! The bakery was out of a lot of items, but I got lucky because as I was checking out the owner brought over some items from the other kitchen to replenish their selection. I was able to sample way more because of this drop off. Otherwise I'd say you have to come here early in the day for ample selection, or visit one of their larger locations!

Amazing selection of artisan baked goods. The breakfast focaccia is almost too big to finish. Took home a still warm baguette that was 10/10

I've bought gifts, coffees, teas, cupcakes, cookies, cannolis, various treats and ordered birthday cakes. I think I have a pretty good idea of the norm. I've always had good service and they've always had a nice selection of locally made crafts in the shop. They are my favorite bakery, despite being very inconsistent in their quality. Why are they my favorite? Because there simply isn't anyone better. Most of their recipes are really tasty, but sometimes (like today) they're super dry because they serve things that have been apparently left out too long and/or baked a touch too long. The last time I custom ordered a cake, there was a hair in it. And for the price I paid, I was shocked at how small it was. This seems to be the norm in Alaska. Owning a bakery must have high overhead. Overall, I do support cAKe, given that I've heard absolute HORROR stories about cake orders gone wrong from other places in town,, especially for weddings and other large events, I'll stick with the devil I know.

But her bare hand. The whole interaction with this young woman seemed to be the biggest inconvenience for her. She needs to work HARD on her customer service or find a different job where she doesn't have to interact with the public.
