    my breakfast burrito
    Sean G.

The food is good. I've had a few of their burritos now the chugiak chorizo is very good and has a nice kick to it. The O'Malley Maple is still my favorite can't go wrong with maple syrup in anything . The staff are friendly and nice, and the service is great. The place itself is very clean and nice and definitely a good place to sit and hang out. My grapes are they don't have a burrito card yet. My wife doesn't like that all of them have sausage. But that's OK. This will be the place I go without her. $10 seems expensive until you bite into the burrito and the quality is very very good. I have to remind myself that I live in Alaska and pay nine dollars for burritos at coffee shops that are frozen in the middle and nuclear hot on one side. The fact that this is fresh and delicious is very nice.

Went in here on the off chance and because i didn't fancy a "bowl" of whatever they had in Sweet Caribou. Those sort of bowls are not at all tempting to me. Burrito seemed the better option for me. I order the one with Maple something in the name, and Blake ordered the Classic. They told us 15 minute wait. OK, that's not too bad, and it's a nice space, i like the artwork/mural on the wall, and the natural wood/resin pour tables - those look like all custom work. On the plus side the Burritos came in less than the 15 minute period they gave us. But on the negative side, my Drip coffee, wasn't particularly hot. The Burritos were an acceptable size for lunch time, however mine was scorchingly hot on the outside, so i cut it in half. And a piece of breakfast sausage fell out so i ate it, and it was cold. So I'm assuming that these are pre-assembled Burritos, heated up on a panini maker or grill pan, and the contents weren't hot all the way through. It was not pleasant to be honest, i left about 1/3 of it. Blake said his was hot all the way through, and the 1/3 i left of mine, he ate that, and said that his had been way better. Honestly, very disappointed with it, i only gave 3 stars because it's a nice space, and because he enjoyed his Burrito, but i won't be returning, because i recently had a Breakfast Burrito in Girdwood, that was really good, and freshly made, and the breakfast potatoes REALLY tasted like country potatoes, properly cooked, prior to being wrapped, and it had enormous flavour. This one I had at Bema was mediocre, and disappointing. I really don't like leaving reviews if they are less than stellar, but improvements can't be made if we just say everything is amazing all the time. Pre-assembled, reheated Burritos? Nope. Maybe for a Coffee stand, but not for a nice space like this. If Burritos is all you're preparing, then do them well. Cook from fresh - it tastes way better.

Bema cafe- I have been wanting to try this cafe for awhile and started to look it up but it's online presence is very shallow, probly because it is relatively new! This cafe is right next door to sweet caribou, formally in the uncle Leroy's cafe. Actually has no door between sweet caribou and on the other side is zip kamboocha tap room. I grabbed a sandwich next door then headed over and ordered myself a 16oz mocha. If I'm correct I think they are the same owners as sweet caribou and they decided to take on coffee or partnered with someone who already did. They roast the coffee in house. My mocha was pretty good, all $5. Fresh tasting and had that coffee taste which I long for in a coffee. I don't order hot chocolate for a reason. The lady taking money was super nice and they have a high tech system. I asked about punch cards- they didn't have the same ones as sweet caribou and said they were in the process of getting their own. I just feel like in this town with no short of hundreds of places to get espresso, you need to stand out from the rest. Their coffee may not with the plain cups, but roasting in house is a stand out and the atmosphere was on point. Beautiful colored mural on the entire wall and beautiful tables to sit at. Check them out if you are at one of the amazing spots nearby.

I was right, as I walked in they sold the very last thing of what I wanted. But gosh am I glad- it forced me to try something new. I didnt take a picture because it was so cold out and my hands were frozen, but it was a beautiful, elongated bakery treat. It had lovely purple Ube cream and touch of oreo crumbs on top, the base was essential much like a flat cruller, but if higher quality. It was sensational! I bought my husband something that looked lower carb that had coffee cream that also enjoyed. I got my husband custom cold jasmine sugar free tea, and I got a frosty honeydew melon drink. It was a little spendy, but its nice to have a treat one on a while.

It's like a croissant baked in a waffle form, but a bit denser than a regular croissant. What really made it special was the Ube cream -- a light, buttery frosting that wasn't too sweet. Easily a 10/10 for me. I also ordered the Ube Cruffin, which had that same croissant-like texture in a muffin shape. The inside had a light cream filling, and the top was covered with the same Ube cream. It was good, but not quite as amazing as the Croffle -- 7/10. The Ham Banh Mi was tasty and filling (6/10), and the Boba Milk Tea was decent too (6/10). Oh and I got to taste their smoked salmon chowder that my friend ordered. Very good flavor, body, and richness (8/10). Everything I had was good but nothing that was as memorable as the Ube Croffle, but it wasn't cheap -- I spent a total $32 for a sandwich, drink and 2 pastries. Then again, prices in Alaska tend to be higher in general. Overall, even though I've only been once, I'd definitely come back for that Ube Croffle -- it was the real highlight!

Some stuff for sale too like jewelry. I came on a Friday afternoon at 1pm and there was nobody inside. They have four or five tables plus two couches. Would be good for groups or a date. I almost passed out when I had to pay 5.75 for a 12oz mocha. Their rent must be extremely high here. None of their menus on the counter or the wall had any prices, well they did but they blacked them out. None of the specials had prices, the food too. So they can change them how they see fit. I just don't really like that business practice, I think it's kind of shady. They are way too high as well. Nobody should be paying that for espresso. Mocha did taste decent though, and not too hot which I appreciate I didn't burn my mouth. The worker was very quiet and when I left she sat on the couch with her phone. Happy to support small businesses but I won't go out of my way to come here or ever pay that much for a mocha. Those are *bucks prices.

This is one of the first places where I ever had a non-drip coffee. Its magazine racks held...without getting too graphic...a lot of things a 13 y/o boy could appreciate. And...so many interesting books. So many more than the library, and presented in a much more intriguing fashion. (card catalog? BO-RING!) Times have changed though. Coffee shops have exploded. There are dozens within a few miles of this location. Books? Believe it or not, Amazon started as an online "BOOK" store. That's all they sold. The main selling point was "you can shop in your underwear!!!!!". You actually had to pay for shipping. In those days, you could make a good case for going into a B&N (or their competitor "Borders"). Now though? Amazon is consistently 20-50% cheaper on just about everything here. You'd think they'd price match? I asked them to price match a $20 book that was $15 on Amazon. They couldn't. I'll just wait a few days and save $5. I AM that cheap and I am NOT that impatient. They have all the stuff you're used to at a B&N, with some tweaks: Books: all the books Music: smartly focused on vinyl, the only physical media anyone still wants to pay for Starbucks: pretty big one located on-site Games: good selection of board games, the geekier the better Geek tchotchkes: overpriced figures/trinkets from geek culture (Star Wars, Dragon Ball Z, etc)
