Unfortunately, this was a second bad experience in recent months. After placing our order, the girl making sandwiches announces it will be at least 30 minutes because they are "too backed up with hot sandwich orders". We acknowledged and took our seats. A couple of observations while we waited. There were 4 workers, and only one making sandwiches. All the patrons were waiting on something from the lunch counter. The tables and main counter all needed a good wipe down. The staff needs better time management training to handle the "crowd". (It was not very crowded but there was no sense of urgency on anyone's part to get the people waiting their food.) The staff making sandwiches should have their hair tied back. I watched multiple people leave without being helped and multiple food delivery people waited and eventually left without the food. After 30 minutes, we did receive our 3 sandwiches. Two cold ones and a grilled cheese. The cold sandwiches were just ok for the price. The grilled cheese was not quite grilled and the cheese did not melt. The lesson learned for me is to just buy the ingredients and make sandwiches. For $50+, I should have just done that. This business could be doing so much better with a good manager, better customer service, and tightening up the cleanliness. read more

Unfortunate that this is the day I decided it was about time I left a review for House Of Bread. House of Bread is a lovely space, airy light dining room, and lots of baked goods, and artisanal-looking jarred goods. It feels very open. They have a menu on the wall, and a chalkboard with the types of bread available that day. Husband orders cheesy broccoli soup, and she tells him "it's not really cheesy broccoli soup, it's got lots of veggies in it too" ok, he says, but still orders a bowl. I choose Tuna Salad, and I select 14 grain as my bread choice - "sorry, we're out of that", so I then choose 9 grain - "sorry, we're out of that", and so I ask for marbled rye - "sorry, we're out of that too" I'm really quite surprised, as it's 12.30 like prime lunch time, and they're out of 3 breads already? Maybe cross them off your chalkboard, so you don't have to keep disappointing people. So i choose focaccia with my fingers crossed, and all was well. The order was complete at 12.36. We sit. We wait. Twiddling our fingers. By 20 minutes I'm becoming impatient, because I'm hangry, and the dining room is not that full - maybe 5 tables. As there are 4 staff working behind the counter (could be more round the back in the bakery) I think service could be faster, to dish up a bowl of premade soup, and assemble a cold tuna salad sandwich. Anyway i get my eye on the young man making sandwiches. He's not wearing gloves, is running his fingers through his hair, and touching his face. I see a sandwich that was on the top of the shelf, and it either fell, or he threw it, onto presumably a bench below, and then reach up angrily for a new bag of bread, I don't know - maybe he made it wrong, and was starting over. By 1.02, (26 minutes later) husband could take it no more and went to get a refund. This is not the review I expected to be leaving today, as I've never had service like this here before. I've never gone here before and had to choose my bread 4 times, due to them running out. I've never had to wait so long for lunch using pre-made ingredients. I don't know what was going on, but it's nothing like all the other times we've been here, and I hope it's a one off. If I go back and see the same staff, I'll just walk straight out again and avoid another experience like this one. read more

The almond croissant wasn't like other almond croissants with marzipan-like filling; it had chopped up nuts and cinnamon sugar... seemed like a pecan roll more than an almond croissant. The sourdough was really disappointing :( sourdough in Alaska is amazing and this was just like a regular loaf of bread... mild sourdough flavor and soft like a dense loaf of white bread. The samples were really fun! I love to see samples at restaurants and bakeries to help inform future purchases. I sampled the lemon cake, cinnamon bread, and bread pudding. I always want to love this place but I just don't. My husband feels that my lower 48 food expectations get in the way but it shouldn't be hard for a bakery/soup/sandwich place to make an incredibly tasty sandwich. For starters the sandwich choices are very limited. It's mainly cold sandwiches with bland toppings. It would be beneficial for them to have more sauce options (like savory sauces, maybe a chipotle sauce). Basically it's mayo and mustard from what I see and they don't add much to the sandwich. This place is so well organized and so "on-brand" that at first I thought it was a chain! I had to go to their website to confirm that they were a local business. The title don't lie. Bread is the main thing they do here. However, they have a selection of sandos using said bread. I got a sunrise sandwich and added roast beef. I also got a large coffee. It came out to around $16. Fresh baked bread wafts through the deli complete with hard wood floors and a warm fire place. I ordered and devoured the chicken Tuscan on grandmas white with added mayo and salt and pepper that I added on later. Now pay attention as this is important: as far as chicken goes, most places slice it into chunks which is like trying to stuff stir fry into your sandwich. House of bread slices a long flat horizontal cut of the chicken breast which is soft, not messy and absolutely a delicious way to enjoy your chicken in a sandwich. House of Bread is a nice place to pick up a specialty loaf of bread or a good pastry. I haven't sampled a bread here I didn't like. They have a good variety of sweet and savory breads. You can get the bread sliced or unsliced. I like that they list their ingredients for the bread and pastries on the packaging. Everything is made with very simple ingredients you would use to bake at home. I particularly like the Oatmeal Applesauce bread for toast and sandwiches. Like Great Harvest, you can get a stamp card that gives you a free loaf of bread after you purchase 12 loaves. I haven't had many of their sandwiches, but I do recall enjoying the Cranky Turkey. The sandwiches aren't as hearty as Great Harvest's, which can be good or bad depending on how hungry you are. I went yesterday around 4:00pm, when they start selling pastries at a discount, so I was able to get two cinnamon rolls for only $3.00 (they're regularly $3.25 each). Great deal. I got the whole wheat cinnamon rolls since that was all they had left besides a caramel roll. They're a bit drier than your standard cinnamon roll, but still delicious. I like that the sweetness isn't overwhelming. Just the right amount of frosting on top and cinnamon filling. I'd like to go back sometime earlier in the day when the cinnamon rolls are fresh. Solid bakery, but doesn't quite wow me enough to make me want to give 5 stars. read more
