The kare kare is legit sooooo good, especially with shrimp bagoong. Guys, I'm from SoCal and was feeling so homesick suddenly. I needed a taste of home and I don't usually like tripe in my kare kare (I know - blasphemy) so I requested the dish without tripe and when it came out in the mini kawali and with all the delicious veggies still a little crisp (not mushy and wilted), my little homesick heart and tastebuds were so happy. For clarity, I ordered delivery and haven't been into the restaurant, so I can't speak on the service of the restaurant or the atomosphere. The food, however, is about to be so dangerous for my wallet. I ordered the fried pork belly and a side of garlic rice, and a bbq pork platter. All of the food arrived hot and in well ventilated boxes, so it arrived crispy. The garlic rice was delicious, perfect if you love garlic above all else (I do). The bbq pork, while on the sweet side, was very tasty and filling. The pork belly was perfectly crispy where it needed to be, and melt in your mouth everywhere else. The price was right for the portions- with just that me and my partner were both able to eat lunch and dinner, which is always appreciated when looking to make your dollar stretch further. read more

April 30 2022 Wifey and I ate here today. I had the sizzling chicken (I mixed it with the rice) and "Banana Con Yelo" for dessert. Wifey had liempo (pork). I enjoyed the sizzling chicken and dessert. Wifey enjoyed hers as well. The waiter didn't ask us what we wanted to drink. Later on, I asked him for a drink while he was behind the wall. Let's get a couple of awkward things out of the way, right off the bat: #1: this is the first time I've ever had Filipino food. I had zero expectations about what to expect or what it is "supposed" to taste like. #2: I do not have a sweet tooth. If anything, I have the opposite. In fact, my name back at the FRAT was "Bittertooth". Bittertooooth! CHUG! CHUG! CHUG! (just kidding, I wasn't in a frat and I only wish I had a cool nickname like "Bittertooth") Interior here is nice. Dark and clean and a little fancy, like you'll find at most Asian restaraunts in town. Big difference: there is a TON of foliage! I dig it! Plants everywhere! Waitress was nice. Food was...sticky-sweet and mighty mighty salty. I ordered the Kubo Pork Adobo. The chunks of pork were about 2/3rds meat and 1/3 solid, white, fat. It was just too much for me. The salt was burning and dehydrating my entire mouth (felt like a slug being murdered by a heartless 7 year old), the sweetness felt like I was chugging Cola syrup, and the fat detracted from the meat. Maybe it's supposed to be fatty and you're supposed to eat the fat? I don't know. I cut the fat off of every chunk of pork which made eating this salt & sugar bomb tedious. I'll try to come again for the buffet so I can sample other types of Filipino food. As it is, I'm not sure if my problem is that I'm not into Filipino food or if I'm simply not a fan of this restaurant. I have only tried 2 dishes here but will write review anyway because the overall meal experience I had jn this restaurant deserves a shout out: Dish 1) Sizzling sisig. This is a legitimate delicious sizzling sisig. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is the only Filipino restaurant in Anchorage that I've been to so far that serves sisig in a sizzling plate. PLUS the fresh egg on top. Sisig is not only a dish but a whole 'mix raw the egg' experience and hear the "tssssss" sound. Dish 2) Dinugoan. I haven't eaten dinugoan in a really long time so I could be biased but wow the taste reminds me of the dinugoan sent home with your order of lechon back in the province. (In the province, you send your local lechonan your live pig and they slaughter and roast the pig for you AND cook the remaining non-lechon related parts and give it to you as an extra free dish). Now back to Kubo's version, it is like how the locals make dinugoan! And my the serving is huuugeee! See the photo, it could probably feed 4-5 people. The ambiance is not the best, it was a little bit too dark for me. But its clean and service is very attentive and patient- and that's the most important thing. Ambiance is relative anyway. I will definitely go back and try other dishes and definitely desserts. If I had not stuffed my mouth with the above mentioned dishes plus the extra rice, I would've had space for dessert! We ordered lechon kawali, BBQ pork, and menudo. All tasted great! 3 stars for the slowness of service. It took almost 5 minutes from seating ourselves to get someone to take our order. Another few minutes to get us water. No refills on the water. After giving us the check, the guy didn't return to pick up our payment so we can go on our way. Currently, there are 4 tables with customers. We were the first of the four. We have finished eating now and waiting for the wait staff to return. It's been 5 minutes now. We hope to get going within the next 5 minutes unless it takes more than that to charge our card and get a to go box. read more

Yelp 100 Challenge 2017 #54/100 My cousin and his wife treated us to lunch here. Service was a little slow or it might have been due to intimidation from serving our loud group. Speaking in our native dialect, you'd think we were fighting with each other but it's all excited talk and stories of catching up. Our food came out after some time (there were hot and ready items but our cousin opted for something special made to order). We had pancit bihon (rice stick noodles) with pork and shrimp served in a kawali (wok), and the bilao. (A bilao is a flat round-shaped rice winnower, a traditional implement in the Philippines for removing rice chaff. It is usually made from woven wood). So in the bilao are some of the Philippines' most-loved food- crispy pata (deep fried pork hock), daing na bangus (marinated milkfish), lechon kawali (deep fried pork belly with skin on) lumpia shanghai (pork eggrolls), pork barbecue, baked mussels, grilled tilapia and squid, and a halved salted duck egg over steamed white rice, with chopped tomatoes, and the sauces on the side- soy sauce, vinegar, liver sauce, etc. I tried a little of everything except the squid and tilapia. Although I've had better tasting items from the bilao elsewhere, these here were good. The company and conversation made all the difference. Service can definitely be improved on, totally missing the Filipino hospitality. They have a gender neutral restroom that is clean and functional. Parking is adequate. read more

My friends and I were wanting Filipino cuisine, and we had decided on Kubo. Boy, was that a bad idea. As soon as you walk in, no one greeted us at the door. There was no sign indicating if we could seat ourselves or if we had to wait to be seated. We were standing there for 5 minutes before we were finally acknowledged and told we could seat ourselves. After being seated, it was at least 20 minutes before we were even offered water (no refills were offered either) and had order taken. It was at least 45 minutes before our food was even brought out to us. There were 5 of us by the way, and that was WAY too long for food to take that long. Mind you, we were 1 of 2 occupied tables in that whole restaurant and we were never checked up on the whole time we were there. Came here my first and only time for a private party. This place is tucked in the corner of a strip mall off of Minnesota. The food was served buffet style. I got there about an hour late and most items were gone...understandable. The problem was that it stayed this way the entire party. Bahay didn't seem prepared when it came to the food. Only one item at a time would be refilled on the buffet and then of course eaten right away. There never seemed to be enough for the amount of people in attendance. I tasted the fried rice, that was good. Lumpia, pancit, and adobo are my favorite Filipino dishes and unfortunately, I didn't get to try Bahays'. The staff was serving attendees wine from the kitchen. I'm not sure if it was wine sold regularly inside Bahay's or wine that came from the nearby liquor store for this private event. The Bahay staff seemed to always be away so, when you wanted a refill or needed anything you had to stand near the kitchen area and wait for your presence to be sensed. In addition to set-up and decorating, the hosts and attendees also did 90% of the clean-up. All things considered, I personally dont think hosting the party at Bahay's was worth it for what I was told was paid. read more

Nicely appointed restaurant is warm and inviting as soon as you step in the door. Disclaimer: I know the new owner, who also was my server, so I'll omit service from my review in the interest of fairness. Paging through the menu, it is clear that this restaurant doesn't pull any punches when it comes to representing their ethnic cuisine. They're not Americanizing it to bring in a broader crowd, which I can respect. If you look hard enough, you can find Teriyaki Chicken, but it is going to be buried at the back. Be ready with an open mind if this is outside your normal comfort zone. I had the Adobo Chicken. Know that Adobo is very different depending on the ethnicity. It was served with white rice, which is a very fortunate thing. It is needed to help tame the very intense flavor of the marinade. A little vinegary and fairly salty, the sauce was a strong gravy that I could imagine was reduced significantly. The portion was generous, but you will need to separate out the meat from bones, etc. They were in miscellaneous undefined chunks, so you'll probably end up with a couple surprise bones. For dessert, I got Turon (fried bananas) a la mode. It was huge and really more than one person should have been eating, but I finished it nonetheless. Near the end of my dinner, they were starting an evening of karaoke. The sound system sounded surprisingly good, but somehow the vocals didn't have quite the same quality. :) I left feeling satisfied that I had given my palate a bit of a workout, expanding beyond its normal routine. read more

So lechon kawali has been my thing lately. I can't get enough of it. Anyways, Kubo's lechon kawali is by far one of the best in Anchorage that I have found. The taste is perfect..flavoring is definitely on point. Most that I have tried around town are bland or the skin isn't crisped and it's chewy. Bleh. So due to my positive experience with their lechon kawali; I've decided to venture off and try their other items on the menu. The garlic rice is very tasty and not as over powering as I expected it to be (which I like). The adobo is pretty tasty as well. From my experience, service wise. I've read the reviews on lack of service; my experience has been very pleasant actually. Although, I haven't yet sat down and experienced the table service yet. Most of my orders have been called in and picked up. Though, during that brief phone call and pick up experience; I have been greeted and given polite customer service. Phone etiquette is always a thing for me, if they are brief and off putting from the beginning..I'm done. But I haven't experienced that here at Kubo. Anyways...definitely a returning customer. The prices are a bit higher than most but i believe the food has quality. Definitely recommend the lechon kawali. read more

Kubo, Kubo, Kubo. I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant due to the owner's kid who works here. The service is god awful. I highly recommend just taking your food to go, unless you have literal HOURS to wait for your food and the patience of a saint. The food here is really good. If you're also Filipino, keep in mind that we're all from different islands so the food may be different than what you're accustomed to. I believe the owners were/are Visayan and their food is similar to my mother's. My absolute favorite comfort food on earth is fried milkfish aka daing na bangus. They use the small baby milkfish that are marinated in garlic and vinegar. In my opinion they are far more flavorful than the adult milkfish. I also highly recommend the Filipino (sweet) bbq. They used to do chicken but lately they've only served pork. You MUST order the lumpia shanghai. I feel bad for saying this (sorry mom!) but their lumpia is my absolute favorite. No one makes it better. They are crispy and so flavorful. Do not skip the lumpia. My roommate and I both like their pancit as well. I highly recommend getting both noodles (Clear + wheat) as well as all meats (pork, chicken, shrimp). They even include longanisa and chicharron. Ask for extra lime or lemon. The dinuguan ("chocolate" -blood- meat) is equally delicious though I wouldn't recommend it to a squeamish westerner. If you're looking for something Caucasian friendly, I highly recommend sticking to Chicken/Pork Adobo or Pancit. Sinigang is another good choice for first timers, though it is slightly sour. My main complaint about this place is that the customer service is AWFUL. My friend and I waited more than an hour and a half for food after waiting half an hour for menus because the teenager who works here is so inattentive. He is always engrossed in texting and frankly I would be embarrassed as the owners have allowed this behavior to continue for years. This one employee has succeeded in leaving a very negative impression with every person I've brought here, and it's sad that their food gets overshadowed by his unprofessional behavior. If you get the teenager with glasses, expect to be abandoned and have to walk up to ask for things. read more

Alrighty then,, we're in Anchorage for shits and giggles so, our last dinner would be hella proper if we did Filipino Cuisine. So went on yelp and found this spot. The chef/cook is definitely fearless. The crispy pata we ordered is definitely perfect, although it is one of the simple dishes in the filipino book. But the bicol express was phenomenal. Never had it with shrimp and squid before, and I was floored. Also, we did the whole dessert thing and we gave the Taho a go at it. BTW, did I mention the chef/cook was fearless? Let me just go on ahead and let everybody know what's up. This is the United States of America and fresh silky tofu is very very very very rare, and for this guy to execute this desert with soft tofu is definitely fearless. We were in Anchorage for one day and decided to rent a car instead of hanging out at the airport. I asked a girl at the rental counter (who looked Filipina) if there were any Filipino restaurants in town. She gave me directions to Kubo. Kubo is located in what apprears to be an international strip mall, along with Korean and other asian shops. They were just opening when we knocked on the door and hurriedly unlocked to let us in. My wife and I are both Filipino so we always search out the soul food cookin' when we travel. The restaurant is dark, with mood lighting. It had the look of a nightclub back in the Philippines. We saw two big screen TV's for news, sports and karaoke and even a small stage at one end of the room. The waiter seated us and handed the menus. As we were looking them over we noticed a parade of Filipinos coming in to order from a hot table in the back. In the Philippines we call this "Turo Turo" ("Point, Point") in the US it's called cafeteria. We told the waiter we would rather order that way and went to the steam table. A delightful collection of Filipino cuisine greeted us. I had Humba and Sitao(Stewed pork belly and sauteed long beans), my wife had Fried Bangus and BBQ on a stick (Fried Milkfish and BBQ Pork.) Everything came with rice, of course. The food was generously served, well seasoned and tasty, just like back home. And it was fun chatting with the other Filipinos who came in for lunch. I had no idea Anchorage had such a Pinoy population. We later learned Kubo also has entertainment, besides the karaoke, with musical and comedy acts so the "nightclub" decor made sense. read more

Their garlic rice is most definetly a must try, even inspired me to try and make garlic rice myself-- however, I failed to make it as great as theirs. I usually get the -silog options, specifically the lumpiasilog. It's great! I've both dined in and taken out, from what I recall most experiences have been okay. Service does take a quite a while, so be prepared to do some errands or fiddly around your phone while you wait. I remembered I ordered over the phone once and came to the store 20 mins later. Went here for dinner with some friends and was pretty disappointed . I came in with an open mind as I hold Filipino cuisine close to my heart. The service was pretty lackluster and I felt like the waiter wasn't in a great mood. It took quite long until we were asked what we wanted to order and even longer for the food to actually arrive. It took forever for just the water and we were never offered refills. I would understand the sluggishness of service if it was busy, but there was literally only one other table occupied in the whole restaurant. The saving grace was that the when the food eventually came, it was actually quite decent. Not bad by any means, however, definitely not worth the wait. The krispy pata, just as good as others I have had in Artesia, CA. I guess if your ordering and picking up this is probably the place to go. My issue with the place is the customer service. Or lack there of. First I walked into this place and there was no one to greet you or seat you. I just made the executive decision to seat myself. There was one couple already seated with menus but more than 3-4 minutes before someone emerged. The greeter/host/server gave me a menu and a glass of water but did not say a thing. He then proceeded to take the order of the couple in the restaurant and then disappeared in to the back. About another 4-5 minutes later (seemed like an eternity) he came back and asked if I was ready. I ordered the krispy pata and some garlic fried rice. Now the wait was about 20+ minutes before he emerged with my food. In the meantime he brought the couple before me their sisig and rice. Also another came in during that time and I advised them to just pick a seat, any seat and the host will come out when he sees fit. After having my fill of the pata I waited another 10 minutes before I walked up to the counter hit the bell to tell them I would like the check. Although the food was delicious, the service will make me never come back here again. read more

I am giving this restaurant 2/5 stars because of the subpar quality of service you receive there. The food is good, and a little pricey, but the customer service is awful. I enjoy the food at this restaurant, but the recent service I've received has made me not want to go back. While out and about, I decided to call in an order. When I called, a woman answered the phone, listened to my order, then cut me off saying she wanted my name and phone number and for me to repeat my order again. She was snappy, asking me if I was Door Dash, audibly sighing into the phone when I did not speak Tagalog back to her, etc. The woman came off as a bit rude, but I brushed it off thinking maybe they were busy... after I placed my order, the woman tried hanging up on me. I quickly asked how long the wait would be, and she told me "20-25... half hour" which I was fine with since I was running errands anyways. About 45 minutes later, my boyfriend and I arrive at the restaurant to pickup our food. There are two people there and another table that hadn't been bussed. Overall, not very busy. A young man at the front looks at us, seemingly-confused as to why we were there. I told him we were there to pickup an order, he gave us a confused look, went into the back, came out, asked what we had ordered, then disappeared in the back again. Moments later, out comes a woman (who I'm guessing I spoke to earlier) giving us a dirty look asking, "What did you order?" The woman continued to tell us that we must wait another 30 minutes at least. I stated that she told me 30 minutes on the phone and that it had been over 45, the woman got visibly frustrated- rolling her eyes and glaring at us. When my boyfriend asked why we had to wait, the woman got frustrated with us and started yelling about how "Fire isn't fast", that the grill wasn't heated up yet, and "Your meat is still red". She then shooed us away, saying that we could wait in the restaurant, continuing to give us dirty looks and argue with us that we would have to sit down and wait at least another 30 minutes for her to even cook our food. Long story short, we left the restaurant empty-handed. Looking at the table that hadn't been bussed, I could see someone else had eaten one of their BBQ menu items, so the excuse of "Fire isn't fast" was invalid, unless this table had been sitting dirty for hours. I like the food at Kubo, but the customer service has seen better days. You get the vibe that if you aren't Filipino, they won't be cordial. I won't be going there for a long time. read more

As a family business, it is difficult to get real professional service waiters since cost is always a factor. While it is true that there is room for improvement, without proper training the standards will always be subpar since the attendant is a youngster. That being said, I agree with the review of Tiffany about their food taste & preparation. We were visiting from an area in Southern Ca where there is a concentration of Filipino restaurants & this place can hold its own.
