Homemade kimchi!
Laura O.

Was craving some Chinese food and Yelp recommended Tempura Express. Ordering was super simple. You can place your order online and there are many options and areas to write in substitutions. We got two specials and some chicken fried rice. My order was ready in 15 minutes and was still piping hot by the time I got home to enjoy it 10 minutes later. The Mongolian beef was super good! Sesame chicken had a lovely sour twang to it. The sweet and sour chicken had HUGE chunks of pineapple in it and a good amount of sauce. The chicken fried rice hit the spot as well. I am so full and happy. I will definitely order from Tempura Express again. Looks like a mom and pop run business. Very clean and welcoming. I recommend giving them a try.

Very rare to get 5 stars as a food place from me. I had a craving for sushi and the husband had one for Hawaiian. We met in the middle and came here for the teriyaki chicken. Thumbs up for service, thumbs up for food, thumbs up for cleanliness, and thumbs up for ambiance. Read on for specifics, but I will just say this, just try it. It's great. I had the tempura express combo plate. It came with a crunch roll, teriyaki chicken and rice, salad, tempura medley (normal shrimp onion and sweet potato), with side of ginger and wasabi. My husband had chicken combo plate. It was our first time so we also ordered gyoza and side of tempura sweet potatoes. Came to about $45. I won't front, at first I was like "yea for two meals that's a lot. I won't make it back here often". But boy was I wrong. It's a TON of food! If you sit down to eat they bring you miso soup. So good! Actually flavorful. I hate tofu, but I ate the crap out of that soup. The gyoza was fried. Not my favorite, but the sauce and the filling made it so good! Tempura was great too. Not like those places where the sweet potato is still hard and undercooked in the middle, but perfectly golden on the outside. Chicken was great. Not dry. Very flavorful. Now for the best part! The menu is very diverse! There are so many good choices on the menu. Being pregnant, I can't have sushi unless it's cooked (which isn't much fun). The crunch roll is so good! A lot of times the toll that comes with your food is not very tasty, normally bland and inexpensive to make. Not this one. It's great for someone who can't have the raw stuff. The flavors aren't muddled together and it's not three pieces of a roll. It's probably more than half of one! You've got to try this place if you haven't.

Spicy Pork Bulgogi Combo.

3.5/4 rating. We ordered the spicy pork bulgogi and tempura express combo. As the waitress serving my plate I was disappointed with the meat portion, but the taste and fresh ingredients kinda compensate for it. However, the tempura express had a lot more and was served bento style. I should have ordered the express as the portion was way bigger and it would cost just a dollar more - my point try the tempura express. I told my wife I had to taste her plate for the sake of providing an accurate yelp review. So the crunchy sushi was decent, tempura was better than expected (a piece of onion, potato, pot sticker), and surprising the sticky rice was perfectly made. This place was pricey for an informal lunch setting, but it is a good place to hit up once in a while. Let me also add that they could use extra help to run the dining area, asian lady was taking orders on/off the phone and serving meals. I thought a frisbee landed on my table.

You must understand, since I don't drive, this is a decision I give great thought to before I take into action. Because once my husband shuts the door on a place and says we aren't going back, that's it. He doesn't give them an ounce of grace. Their heads are on the chopping block and they're blacklisted for life. He approved of the interior. It was casual enough to be comfortable, but had some nice touches to make you forget you're in Anchorage's most "dangerous" neighborhood. We walked in and were greeted by.... Noone. We had to walk all the way to the back of the restaurant to get someone's attention and were instructed to seat ourselves. A few minutes later the same gal , swings by slaps some menus and water on the table and says not a word and disappears. Mmmm.... OK then. The same individual returns later to take our orders for drinks, apps and entrees. A short time later she returns later with drinks. Then.... nothing. No app. Then our entrees appear. No app. Then our rice. Then finally our overcooked, inedible app. Wtf. I should have refused to pay for it. Whatever. My entree was a 3.5, my husband's was a 2. The app was -1. My husband called me a liar for hyping up this place. He was pissed. Dammit. I have to take this one off my fave list, my husband will never drive me there again. Sigh.

Guarantee you will leave fat and happy! . I got the same stuff I get at most Pho houses. Fresh / Sprint Rolls, Beef Combo Pho, and Thai Tea. Rolls were good, they came with a sweet n sour dipping sauce. The Pho was excellent! It's the first time I can remember when there was just as much meat as there were noodles! Being lunch time, I ordered the small bowl. It was packed so full of brisket and flank and tripe and meatballs and tendon that I couldn't finish it all - I was stuffed. One nice touch is they the noodle are cut in half, so if you haven't quite mastered eating noodles with chopsticks, these are easy to scoop onto the spoon. A welcome touch for most Americans. :). Oh yea ... along with beef and chicken Pho, they also have Duck Pho - if you're feeling adventurous.

I'd been wanting to try this food spot FOREVER. It just seemed every time we were in town looking…read morefor food it was the wrong day. We basically tried everything on the menu. A fried ono fish burger, a seared ahi sandwich, cheesy seafood dip, and the cookies. Everything was awesome! The fish burger had lilikoi tartar sauce and the fish was super fresh tender and flaky. The ahi sando had chopped kimchi and a garlicky mayo. The dip had a touch of smoke and didn't taste fishy. The cookies were bigger than I imagined and were excellent especially with the generous sprinkling of maldon sea salt crystals. If I was forced to split hairs, I'd wished the seafood medley in the dip (shrimp, halibut, etc) were chunkier so you could identify what was in each bite. It was more whipped or creamed together. I also think the cookies would be better if they were just a little thicker, although I can see the allure of a thin crispy cookie also. The cost was pretty expensive, but the ingredients they use are fresh and high quality so you can see where the money goes. The staff were really above-and-beyond friendly. They quickly set up an extra folding table for our family when they noticed we had no where to sit. Please visit this food cart (and follow them on socials, to keep track of their weekly specials) -- let's keep them in business! Anyone can see they take a lot of pride in their food both taste, image and creativity. I can't wait to try more things from Familia.
