Sushi Umi Parking: Parking can be difficult during lunch time, especial on the weekend. Atmosphere: Typical modern high-end sushi restaurant setup. Service: Detail and professional. Presentation: I ordered the omakase sushi lunch. Micro size sushi with excellent craftmanship. Taste: The fish taste fresh but their Japanese style red vinegar sushi rice is too sour for my taste (even when compare to the sushi restaurants I tried in Tokyo). I added an uni cup and it is some of the best sea urchin I had in recent year in the GTA. Overall: If you don't add extra items, I believe a normal male will still feel hungry after the meal. There are many other choices in the Markham / Richmond Hill area.
A really great omakase experience. The fish is very fresh tasting and the flavour combinations are great. Not gimmicky or overly complex. Some examples are combinations with shiso, sudachi, scallions, or other ingredients. The staff and chef are very attentive. Always looking to adjust taste or temperature to suit the diner. They also do a great job of looking to refill cups or wipe any drops. Attentive but not intrusive. The resturant also takes time and care to celebrate any special occasions or meet distant restrictions where possible. Great experience and fairly reasonable pricing for an omakase experience. Will definitely come back again.
Sushi umi is a great option if you're looking for a more affordable omakase or looking into trying it. They're currently doing a lunch/dinner promo but I feel like they will do it again soon but not sure. Lasts til July 31st 2025. Went during Lunch, you get an appetizer, 10 pc sushi, tamago for $68. Personally, the quality and service really shined through! The sushi tasted very fresh and the rice was perfectly cooked, not too dry more of the moist side. Including in the 10 pcs they included 2 sushi with uni, the three kinds (lean, medium fatty, fattiest tuna) which is definitely worth the money! The salmon roe was very flavourful as well. and the Negitoro radish sushi was great as well. The host/servers were very attentive and really kind! The chef and servers made sure to ask if we were enjoying the meal too. The lunch lasted about 1 hr and 15 minute which was perfect, it goes by pretty quick. and They did serve a complimentary Mango Dessert for birthdays (it was delicious!!) I would definitely come back to dine more and maybe try their dinner menu. Ambiance is really calm and a little bit fancy but you could definitely wear comfy or casual clothes if you wanted to. Restrooms were very clean as well. parking might be hard to find but there was plenty of underground parking for free
Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. I've never been here but my yelper friend has and recommended it. Ambiance - 5/5: it's a small, quaint place. You do have to arrive on time as there is a seating time limit. They do multiple rounds so they have clean and setup. They have 2 gender neutral bathrooms, not wheelchair accessible. Be careful though, they have the mouthwash close to the hand soap. Overall, the atmosphere is calm and quiet. Service - 5/5: all of the staff were amazing. They made sure we were comfortable and well cared for from the very beginning. It was cold tonight so everybody had jackets. They helped us put them away in a closet. When we were close to done, they would bring the jackets back out for us. They explained every dish and drink (which is super helpful as a yelper), refilled our tea frequently and made sure our spots were spotless. They check in on us frequently as well. They gave our birthday friend a small slice of mango cake (more on this below) at the very end and sang them the happy birthday song. Special shout out to sushi chef Ryan. He was attentive, interactive and asked us how everything was. He also introduced each sushi dish and made recommendations to use our hands. He encourged us to eat the ikura (salmon fish roe) sushi quickly. He made sure the wasabi level was what we could handle. We were taking our time. He never made is feel rushed. He prepared the dishes accordingly. Food - 5/5: Scallop with house dressing (appetizer) - fresh and citrusy 10 pieces sushi: -sea bass (light and fresh, wasabi is strong but tolerable) -sweet shrimp (sweet from the shrimp, savoury rice, wasabi then a surprising bitter end note) -strip jack (flavourful one of all so far, the fish is richer) -bluefin tuna (quite nice) -spot prawn with sea urchin (spot prawn is light with rich sea urchin - good pairing) -ikura (nice burst in the salmon fish roe) -chutoro (tuna belly - melts in your mouth) -black cod (blow torched - adds a nice charness) -otoro (fattiest tuna - melts like butter) -uni (sea urchin - it was so good) -Waygu with froie gras, umi (birthday girl had it - roll waygu around everything and it was so good. It was an add on order) Hand roll: tuna with pickled radish (good tuna roll, appreciated the slight sourness from the pickled radish and the crispness of the seaweed) Tamago: custardy, i can taste some seafood flavours in it. They blow torched the top of the tomago and it gave me a creme brulee feel which is a nice surprise) Soup: fish bone soup - rich, deep flavours, umami) Home made dessert: matcha coconut - light and refreshing. I'm not the biggest coconut but it was not overpowering at all. The matcha was a sharp contrast Birthday cake - it's interesting. I thought it was gel like/mango chunks by appearance but it has a dry freeze mouth feel. Rich mango flavour though. I was initially surprised that they put soup near the end of the menu. However, it does make sense since it had the strongest flavour. It would have taken away from the sushi which had overall a light flavour profile. Price: $$$ Overall 5/5: I'm difficult to please as a yelper and giving a full 5 stars is rare for me. I'm definitely coming back here with friends and families.
Just wow. The ambiance is quiet and not suitable for children. It's classy, it's elegant and though the menu may look small, you come out of the dining experience quite content. Omekase - chefs choice. Each piece is made in front of you. You get one piece at a time and enjoy the flavors that hit your tongue. Soup was delicious. Fish was fresh. The scallop appetizer? To die for. The star of the show is definitely the uni. Sweet, buttery sea urchin in 2 of their dishes. If I could I'd eat all of their uni. Definitely 5/5
Finally got to try the omakase here for dinner. Made a reservation for 8:30pm and we were queued inside the store before letting us inside the main dining area. The full course was $98. The fish tasted really fresh and our chef was good at explaining as my bf has several questions for him. My favourite had to be the otoro sushi and ebi with uni. It was phenomenal. Great experience and close to home if you live in Markham.
The fish wasn't that fresh. I threw up after the meal because it wasn't sitting well with my stomach. I do have to say their dishes are more interesting than other omakase places around this price range. A few of my friends and I prefer Ato over Umi. Ato definitely has less interesting dishes and it can get a bit boring, but the fish is a lot fresher than here. It depends on what you value. I know a lot of people who like Umi because it's good value and the dishes are different. This was just my experience though.
Venue: A small cozy room with seats around the sushi chefs. We were seated by the side with only two people which was a huge plus for my husband and I as we were here to celebrate my birthday. Service: Absolutely spectacular. The chef asked how much wasabi we would like which is so accommodating and considerate of him to ask that. The ladies who served us were so kind and personable, Suzie was so kind to us. I didn't catch the other lady's name but she was nice enough to place my purse with care below my seat. Food: I enjoyed everything except for skipjack (although I'm not a fan of it anyway). The uni was of a buttery taste. The fish were fresh, wagyu beef melted in my mouth. I am definitely coming here again and bringing my friends! Thank you Sushi Umi for a wonderful first time experience in your restaurant!
I have very high expectations for any omakase I go to, this one wasn't different - and it managed to meet every single one. Upon entry you could feel the vibe of the place really set the tone for the kind of dinner we were going to have. Very quiet, intimate, very romantic. Music gently playing in the back. The service staff were extremely hospitable (as most Japanese are) and they always kept your glass or water or cup of tea full. They made sure you were comfortable and immediately took your jackets to be put away. They also informed us of when exactly to order a la carte menu items during the dinner. Dinner service was excellent. Not very many places I go to have the freshest uni but this place has the sweetest and creamiest uni I've ever tasted and we were given quite a few courses of it. I was super satisfied. My dinner guest and I ordered extra menu items (wagyu and uni, and foie gras). The wagyu melted in your mouth and the foie gras was so creamy (for gras was served with a slight kiss of maple syrup so it truly felt Canadian with Japanese essence.) I have a dairy allergy so unfortunately I couldn't try the matcha Panna cotta so they gave me a second helping of miso soup. They also surprised my dinner guest with a mango mousse birthday cake! It was very sweet of them. I definitely recommend coming here if it's your first time and you're on a budget. For 98$ a person it was a fantastic experience. ** I must note that my dinner guest really hates eating fish and will only eat salmon so it came as a surprise that she loved every single fish that was served because of how fresh and sweet they were.
I have tried the $98 omakase set and it worth the price their tamago is nothing ordinary, it taste like crème brûlée and look at the unithis place is suitable for birthday and anniversary celebration which they served limited number of guests per round! Great place to enjoy with your loved one
Went in for lunch Price was reasonable, food was great Service was amazing Ambiance seats were well spread out,and speed was on pace
OK so I can't compare this to any other Omakase restaurant that charges from $170 & up but I can honestly say that this place makes me feel rich for a minimal (Omakase) fee. The restaurant feels exclusive and intimate. When you walk through the front door, there is a small hallway that leads to another door that is closed. Someone will come open the door to greet you, take your name & take you to your seat(s) as well as offer to hang up your coat/jacket. There is only seating for approximately 12 guests which is why this place feels so intimate. Once seated, they bring you a warm cloth to wipe your hands and ask you what you would like to drink. I ordered the Japanese green tea & it taste authentic and of high quality. My server would come by throughout dinner service to keep it filled & at about the half way point, even offered to change out the cup entirely so I could get a cup of newly hot tea. For the appetizer, we had the Chawanmushi (Japanese savory steamed egg custard). The custard was silky and smooth with lots of snow crab in it as well as Chinese mushroom. I can't remember what else was in it however it was delicate yet complex and the juice from the broth made each bite utterly satisfying and surprising. Following that, we were delighted with 10 pieces of sushi of varying fish from Toro, chu-Toro, otoro to scallops and uni also known as sea urchin (raw shrimp with a dollop of uni). Next in the Umi experience is a Hokkaido uni hand roll, which was creamy and rich in briny umami and with a gentle sweetness. You can taste the difference of uni from Japan versus those from Boston or Vancouver. This is so much better. To wind down the sushi part of the experience, it quickly followed with tamago which they coated with sugar on the top then torched it so it reminded me of creme brulee & made it that much more unique, soup (miso) and lastly, a green matcha panna cotta with some gold flakes on top. I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience & the amazingly high quality food here so much that I immediately made a reservation to come back in 3 weeks time. I would definitely recommend Sushi Umi for an exquisite meal especially to celebrate a special occasion. Everything here is handle with love and care & they really do their best to make it a memorable experience for all.
The service was spectacular!!! I loved how attentive and friendly the staffs were! All the seafood was super fresh too!! It's about $100/ a person before drinks tax and tips. Although all the prices were fresh, the food lacked creativity to make the experience mind blowing. Given the price point, I would say it super worth its value if you're looking for an omakase experience with more traditional nigiri pieces. This place is great for catching up with a small group of friends/ casual date! Downside of omakase is that you're served at the chef counter, therefore it's hard to talk to everyone if you're going in a big group.
Best sushi restaurant in Toronto so far! My husband and I went to this restaurant for my birthday lunch. When I stepped in to the restaurant, we were warmly welcomed and were seated at the counter. The restaurant interior was very sophisticated but small and cosy. We had lunch omakase which included 11 pc of sushi, handroll and tamago. All sushi pieces were fresh and delicious, nicely flavoured and presented. We ended up getting so stuffed. Food, atmosphere, service are all next level. The best dining experience ever! read more
I heard about this place before the 2nd lockdown and have been patiently waiting for the dine-in experience. Because sushi just isn't the same in a take-out box amirite?! The decor, service, ambiance, and fine details were all great. And I think this place is good value for the money ($118 for 2 appetizers, sashimi, 10 pieces of sushi, a handroll, tamago, soup and dessert). Taste wise, it was good and there were a few pieces of fish that left me wanting more. But nothing stood out to me in terms of the ingredients or the technique. There were two add-ons available, the "aburi toro negi uni cup" $45 and the "foie gras sushi" $10 (both of which we ended up getting obvi ). The uni cup was definitely not worth the price tag not only because the portion was small but because the taste wasn't quite there. It was essentially chopped toro with another piece of less fatty toro with uni on-top, but no other flavours/textures really made the dish stand out. For $45, i would expect it to be a mind blowing dish. In contrast the foie gras sushi was delicious, perfectly torched and melted in your mouth and I would definitely recommend ordering. Note that the add-ons change monthly (I think) so they may or may not be the same when you visit. I think this place has potential but needs to find its way of differentiating themselves taste wise from the never ending "new" Japanese omakase restaurants in and around Toronto read more

Lovely experience for an omakase dinner! The quality of the sushi was excellent and the service highly impressed us, especially considering this is one of the more affordable omakase experiences you can find in the Toronto area. We had the house sake and it was very smooth and easy to enjoy - couldn't have enough of the green tea too! It was honestly hard to take pictures of everything because I wanted to eat immediately - missed some for sure. The varying applications of sauces, wasabi and flavours like yuzu were fantastic and the Chef was highly skilled and it definitely felt like he was modifying pieces based on how we reacted. We'll be thinking about this omakase for a while until we return :) read more

We have been here several times now as it is one of the best omakase restaurant in TO in our opinion. We have gone to most and can say we were super impressed with Umi. Well done to the chef and team, they are setting the bar how omakase should be done. read more

This was my first time trying omakase and my experience at Sushi Umi did not disappoint! I loved all of the courses that they had - my favourites being all of the courses with uni, one with uni and hamachi and the other with uni and sushi rice wrapped in seaweed. The chef was really nice (although hard to hear when we were told what the course was) and provided recommendations for each course so that we got the best experience. All of the waitresses were really helpful as well, which definitely added to our experience. Highly recommend! read more

My first omakase experience did not disappoint! The quality of the food and service were fantastic. We made reservations for a Monday evening at 5:30 for 3 people. Arrived about 5 mins early but the staff were very welcoming and immediately sat us down and served us. Drinks - Green tea. It was a little bland and not as rich as we expected. Staff were very attentive and constantly refilling our tea which was greatly appreciated. Additional to the omakase, we ordered the monk fish liver. I'd say it's definitely an acquired taste. It was sort of a mild liver flavour with the texture of a fish ball/fish cake. I wanted to order the wagyu uni sushi but ultimately decided on the monk fish liver because it's not something I've seen at other sushi restaurants. I think it's something everyone should try at least once! The two appetizers at the start were the highlight of the night. The black cod was cooked beautifully and the skin was crispy. The other ap was wagyu topped with torched foie gras and uni. Sooo rich and delicious. I rolled it into one bite and it just melted in my mouth. Overall, the food quality was comparable to what I tried in Japan. 10/10 would recommend!! read more
Very yummy Omakase (experience) at home. Due to the pandemic, we had to order and bring the experience home and it was so good. The sushi given was very fresh and we also ordered toro hand roll on the side and the seaweed was very crispy. The price was also very reasonable. Ordering online and pick up was very convenient. read more

I recommend coming here to experience the omakase! Their fish is super fresh and made right in front of you. Some sushi are best eaten right away so don't wait when the chef tells you to eat it immediately! The ambiance is nice and overall a great experience. One word of advice: be there on time! read more

Heard about this place recently so we decided to give it a try. Because during the pandemic we still prefer getting takeout and eat in the car rather than eating inside so that's why we order takeout. This place can do takeout only during lunchtime and not during dinner time so if you want to try takeout you can only do it at lunch. So we ordered take out 2 times, Omakase 15 pieces first time and the second time with 13 pieces. The orders were ready to pick up on time, which is good! The price in this place is not cheap but I guess it's still worth it considering the quality of the sushi that you get. OK so let's talk about the sushi... The takeout was nicely packaged and wrapped beautifully and it was a pleasant open box experience. The fish are very fresh and when you open the box, there is actually a pleasant fish aroma from the sushi and the fishy smell when the fish is not fresh. So it's important to eat it as soon as you get it and we ate it in the car. The wasabi tasted like it's good quality. The soy sauce tasted like regular soy sauce to me. Every piece of the sushi is all good byte size and all tasted very good. The chef do care about the quality of the fish used. Regarding to the sushi rice, this is probably subjective opinion, I think it's abit too vinegary and abit overpower the fish taste in my opinion. But this is just our preference. We still think Zen makes the best sushi rice. Don't get me wrong, these are very good box of sushi, just want to throw a note out regarding the rice based on our preference and see if u agree. If sushi is not good, we wouldn't have it again within 3 weeks. :) our birthday and wedding anniversary are all in Sept and only 2 weeks apart so Sept is like a celebration month for good food. Lol Regarding to this comment following, Maybe i guess this is the price for not dining in, unfortunately the Nori is not crunchy in the take out and I wish they would consider the option in changing the maki roll to a hand roll with the nori separated with some plastic package just like u see in Japan. But maybe I am asking too much ... just a suggestion really. :) Since I am not a big eater and the price difference for the 15 pieces ($90) vs 13 pieces ($70) is $20, next time , I probably will go with the 13 pieces again because I can barely finish the 15 pieces one and stuffed myself. read more

Picked this nice Omakase restaurant to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The decor was warm and welcoming. However I felt a bit empty as it only has like 10 seatings. Service was fabulous, had a sip of tea then the waitress came and fill my cup right away. Food was great. Sushi and sashimi was fresh. I found the portion was slightly small but acceptable. The quality is definitely great but didn't really wow me. However for its price and location. It's worth while to repeat sometime in the future. read more

Take out a le carte sushi. Presentation is nice for photos. Fish is okay for the price point, no particular flavor noted. Rice is fresh and well seasoned, however a little too strong that masked over the taste of the seafood. Egg is a nice piece of dessert to end our meal. read more

Food was so good - servers constantly filled up tea. Pace was very quick or perhaps we were just eating fast so the chef was matching our speed. Everything was super fresh! The highlights for me were the scallop and uni. Foie gras sushi and monk fish liver were very heavy and generous in portion size - almost couldn't finish it! There were three chefs and about 15 people per seating. I didn't feel like we had to wait between dishes like other omakase restaurants Would visit again! read more

I've been to this place a couple of times and I would say for the price and value, it is very comparable to yasu sushi. It's certainly worth it here for an omakase. It's a great experience to be able to watch the sushi chefs at work and it feels like an intimate dine in experience. The fish is super fresh and perfectly seasoned. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed dinner here - they only have one omakase menu ($118) with an optional uni/toro cup ($45) and foie gras sushi ($10). The uni was the star in my opinion - super fresh and creamy. Second was the tuna hand roll. All the fish was fresh and high quality, some with a slight twist to it - appreciated the yuzu peel on one of the sushi, the seared toro with some crispy onions (I think) on it, and the eel was also freshly steamed. The only thing that I didn't really enjoy was that the toro had some tendons in it. The toro/uni cup was unfortunately not so amazing to be worth $45 so I wouldn't recommend ordering it. Apart from the fish, the tamago was also excellent - very creamy texture, completely different from the usual type. The brown sugar tofu pudding was also very good - very strong soy taste. read more

Went to Sushi Umi again for dinner last night. Phenomenal experience as the 1st time. Everything was very fresh and highly quality. Appetizer, sashimi, sushi, temaki and dessert were all flavourful with a nice balance. Also ordered the a la carte of the waggu uni sushi and the foie gras sushi. The foie gras sushi was literally melted in my mouth. Very satisfied Omakase at Umi. Incredible service with attentive staff and professional chef. Keep up the good work Sushi Umi!!!! read more
