Tonight is my first trying Akoya at Markham. I would compare it directly to Aka-oni. We ordered a sashimi platter for two, one omakase set, 6 lamb skewer, one akagai, and tomato seafood ramen. The sashimi platter includes toro, uni, hamachi, salmon, botan ebi. Thick cut and in fact, it is more thick cut than aka-oni. The akagai is fresh, one of my favorite clam sashimi. The omakase set is a good deal if you pay cash. For $68, you get 9 sushi, one handroll, and one dessert. The lamb skewers are well cooked. However, the ramen is a bit disappointed. The soup is so blend with almost no tomato favors. All in all, there are things that better than aka-oni and things not as good as aka-oni.

Really enjoyed my recent experience at Akoya Izakaya :) The food was delicious, and the service was attentive, even though the staff was new and still in training. I've been to this restaurant twice, and here are some of my favourites: Kiku Tasting Menu ($52 cash) - You get to try a little bit of everything! Soft shell crab, 5pcs sashimi, chicken & wings skewers, 2 handrolls, one-bite ramen, and ice cream of your choice (I chose black sesame) Bara Chirashi Don - All the ingredients are diced into fine bite-size cubes on rice and come with miso soup. Really fresh and delicious! I love the addition of the shiso leaves too Choya Yuzu - Super easy to drink the entire bottle, and it paired well with our meal :) I wanted something smooth, light, and fruity, and this was perfect

It's alright. I came here for the omakase experience as my girlfriend wanted to try their omakase. TBH, I've heard reviews and wasn't inclined to really check it out if it wasn't for my girlfriend. The omakase experience was $65pp cash or $88 with credit card. Includes 9 pc nigiri and miso soup, hand roll and dessert. Tbh, price is high especially for omakase that's not someone from Japan or known as a omakase chef. We opted to seat at a dining table rather than counter because, it was just sad. No tables were doing omakase experience and they had told my girlfriend when they booked they are full and only have 6pm available. As for the sushi, uni tasted weird and like wise for the squid nigiri. Overall it was ok, but would I come back for this price point? Probably not. There are famous omakase experiences nearby that's 10x better and similar price and actually trained omakase chefs in Japan.

Love the interior of this place! I recommend calling head for reservations as they do have lovely private rooms you can reserve! They do have a lot of menu items to pick from: sushi to skewers are available. They do have bentos available for their lunch menu. Service was very attentive even with us being in a private room

Everything was very fresh and the service was excellent. We ordered a variety of "small eats" and enjoyed it all. Take at look at my pics of the food-no issues at all since they were all really good. The seating was great and private in our own little room! And that is not at the expense of service since they gave you lots of privacy until you pressed the bell. A minor quirks is the food kind of all came at once so we did not have a lot of room on our table and we had to rush eating it which we did not like-we may have ordered a lot so next time we will pace a bit more. Definitely come back for sure!!

Newly opened, we were excited to see what they had to offer as the menu online looked good. Ambience was very nice and easy to make a reservation. Although service was friendly, they were not attentive. Had to wave them over multiple times for place our order, for tea, water, check on a missing dish and bill. Food was fine but nothing spectacular but was very pricey for what it is. $12 for a pork belly skewer? 2 adults and 2 young kids over $200 and the kids ate more than we did. Tried once but likely won't return.

Brand new izakaya spot, very soothing music and a couple of private rooms. Service was nice and attentive. The staff informed us that the Unagi is one of their speciality, the eel is shipped from Japan. It's thinner than the usual Unagi which I prefer. I find it more of a fishy taste compared to the usual Unagi. The chicken breast skewer was tasty. I prefer the chicken breast over the chicken wings. The cheese roll, I think it's good for kids, thick piece of mozzarella inside. The angus beef and enoki mushroom was flavourful. Overall, the chicken breast skewer was my favourite out of all of the ones I order. The cod was pretty standard. Will come back to try other items.

The sashimi here is very fresh and the service is excellent. I will definitely come back again.

Tried this new restaurant with my family and had a great experience! The staff were super friendly and the service was excellent. The menu has a nice variety, we had the sashimi, and everything was incredibly fresh, imported from Japan. Even out of season, the uni was rich and creamy. Beautiful presentation and flavorful dishes. Highly recommend checking out this place.

I ended up trying one of their party platters, as well as a California roll for my kid. The roles are really good lots of toppings and very thin amount of rice which I really like. The sashimi and sushi are both very fresh and has a good variety. Price point is also reasonable for the quality of the seafood. The establishment has a casual dine-in setup, offering a relaxed atmosphere suitable for a quick meal or a short break during the day. Despite being a dine-in restaurant, all food is served in takeout boxes, which, while convenient for those on the go, slightly diminishes the overall dining experience for those choosing to eat on the premises. The food quality itself was acceptable. Reasonably portioned, adequately seasoned, and prepared in a timely manner. While it may not stand out as exceptional, it fulfills the expectations for a casual meal. However, the main issue that significantly impacted my experience was the cleanliness of the tables. The first table I sat at had a noticeably sticky surface, which immediately raised concerns about hygiene and maintenance. Assuming it was an isolated case, I moved to a second table, only to encounter the same problem. A third attempt produced similar results, suggesting that this is not an isolated incident but rather a recurring issue throughout the dining area. A sticky table surface not only detracts from comfort but also gives the impression that cleaning practices are not being properly observed between guests. This, unfortunately, overshadowed what could have been a satisfactory meal. In summary, while the restaurant offers decent food at a fair value, the overall dining environment requires improvement, particularly in the table cleanliness and food presentation. Until this concern is addressed, I would recommend opting for takeout instead of dining in, as the food quality is adequate, but the in-house dining conditions fall short of acceptable standards.

The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. That's because every other guest was a well-known "regular" -- a very good sign. We were ushered through the tranquil restaurant and seated at the sushi bar, a zen ambience. We chose the $55 sushi+sashimi omakase lunch course, and it didn't disappoint. The eight pieces of nigiri featured a somewhat typical selection of fish (and hotate/scallop), but slightly edgy and unique in the choice of seasoning and flavours, prepared by Chef Takinami with all the pomp and ceremony and you would expect from fine omakase. The pacing was excellent, we never felt rushed from piece to piece; the wait staff were attentive as would be expected from a high-end Japanese restaurant, on par with omakases that cost three times as much. Overall, incredible value on the meal, for both the food and experience. We couldn't help but look around at what the regulars were enjoying (in addition to their omakase nigiri) -- botan ebi nigiri with deep fried shrimp heads, chawanmushi, cooked dishes featuring monk fish livers, tempura appetizers and more... some great ideas for our next visit!
