We came here for the lunch omakase and were pleasantly surprised. Without crazy high expectations, the food was quite delicious and the service was consistent. The uni was fantastic! Will you be full after a lunch service? Unlikely. However, for the overall enjoyment, we were extremely satisfied. I already want to try their dinner omakase. It was a calm and quiet dining experience. Thank you, Anatoly, for your hospitality!

I had lunch here today and hastened to write this review ASAP because their current special lunch menu - $68 for a 10 piece omakase - is absolutely INCREDIBLE value. I could not believe my eyes when the chef brought out uni twice (the first time as topping for another nigiri), amaebi, AND otoro. The fish was of exceptional quality, fresh and bursting with flavour. Even the rice was cooked superbly well. I must also draw particular attention to the delicious cod appetizer (delicate, tenderly seasoned with spice and subtle sour notes) and the tamago (sweet, smooth, like a crème brûlée but somehow even better). Service was phenomenal, unobtrusive and attentive to a fault. My waitress pulled out my chair, hung up my jacket, introduced the menu, and asked frequently if I would like a new cup of hot water. Fresh towels were provided to wipe your hands at the beginning of the meal, and for your fingers after picking up each sushi piece. It was evident that every detail has been thought of. The environment was quiet, intimate, comfortable - and positively spotless. It looks like the special is available until January 31, so I'll have to see if I can repeat this delightful experience. HIGHLY recommended! Considering the location, the price is insane and I don't think we'll be seeing anything like it anytime soon.

Sushi Umi recently opened their first downtown location along Charles St. and Bay. The small omakase restaurant only has 11 seats where all the seats face the sushi counter for an interactive experience with the sushi chef. For the month of January, Sushi Umi had a special price of only $98 for their omakase for dinner. The dinner menu consists of an appetizer, 10 pieces of sushi, a hand roll, tamago, soup, and a home made dessert. You are also able to add on other items a la carte like wagyu sushi and foie gras sushi. During my visit they were still in the process of obtaining their liquor license and only had non-alcoholic options available. I recently dined at Sushi Umi to take advantage of the special price for their omakase dinner. Reservations were made online which was fairly simple - you do need a credit card to hold your reservation and if you cancel late or don't show up they do charge a fee. Upon arrival at Sushi Umi we were warmly greeted by the host. The vibe of the place is relaxing and quiet. It is more on the casual side (compared to other omakase places in the city). Service is friendly and attentive where the staff make sure you are taken care of, making sure your water is filled throughout the night and your dishes are cleared to make space for the next course. In terms of the menu, the appetizer changes depending on the day. The 10 pieces of sushi were handcrafted freshly in front of our eyes by the sushi chefs. There were pieces including uni, shrimp with uni, Hokkaido scallop, otoro, chu-toro, and maguro. I wish I could remember what I was served but all the fish was fresh and great. I liked the nice touch of the wet paper towel to make sure you could wash your hands after each piece (sushi is traditionally eaten with your hands right away). The sushi chef also made sure the amount of wasabi placed in each sushi piece was to our liking. I also opted to add on a Japanese Miyazaki A5 wagyu sushi which melted in my mouth. The tamago had a sweet taste to it and the blowtorched top added a nice slight crisp to the egg. The soup was a lobster miso soup where you could taste the lobster. Lastly, the home made dessert was a matcha panna cotta, a good light ending to the whole meal. The whole omakase experience took about 1.5 hours and was filling. I did find the vibes of the place to be more casual compared to other omakase places in the city. Service was good and the fish was fresh. Definitely a good deal to take advantage of during the month of January!

I've been to the Markham location a few times, and I was so excited when I heard the downtown spot was opening! I came in for lunch today, and I was blown away. The $68 omakase with uni dishes is a total steal--such a great value for the quality and freshness you get. Every bite was an experience, from the perfectly seasoned sushi to the melt-in-your-mouth uni. The ambiance is just as amazing as the food, making it a must-visit spot for anyone who loves top-tier Japanese cuisine. Can't wait to come back and try more! My cup of tea was never cold! They're super attentive and kind. Highly recommend!

Great value on their omakase. It's $98 and everything was so fresh. The service was very attentive. It's a quiet place and great for date night.

Affordable omakase with high quality ingredient and service -The scallops with yuzu soy sauce were refreshing and sweet, setting the stage for a wonderful meal. -The bluefin tuna was beautifully translucent and has always been one of my favorites. -The grilled black cod just melted in my mouth. The combination of botan shrimp and sea urchin was sweet, fresh, and packed with layers of flavor. The tamagoyaki had a soft, smooth inside, and the crispy caramelized surface really took it to the next level.

There were three add-ons (toro with caviar $25, uni with caviar $35, and caviar sushi). I opted in for the toro and uni add-ons. It was strange they give you the add-ons before any other nigiri. Everything was very good and fresh. Standouts for me was the appetizer, all three cuts of bluefin tuna, the lobster (by far my favorite), and the hotaru ika. I would've appreciated knowing that the omakase included or not included toro and uni before I decided on the add-ons but I don't regret it. It was a splurge night after all. Service was very attentive. Note that the dining space is very small. 12 seats around the counter and two tables. There was a very loud gentleman two seats from me who never learned to use his inside voice and totally ruined vibe. But that's not on the staff. Another note is that gratuity is automatic on the bill.

The space itself leans more modern and clean rather than the typical dark, cozy izakaya vibe, which I actually didn't mind. It felt comfortable, not too loud, and easy to settle into for a slow dinner. We ordered a mix of small plates to share, and everything came out looking nicely put together. The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent. The beef fried rice was straightforward but satisfying, one of those dishes that's easy to keep going back to between everything else. Drinks were a nice touch too.. refreshing, nicely presented, and added to the overall experience. Overall, this feels like a solid spot for a casual night out with friends.
