Excellent value for an omakase, come try it before it's gone! For $100 we received: - A selection of 4 types of sashimi - Tuna tartar appetizer - 12 pieces of nigiri - Miso soup - Handroll - Ice cream dessert Every single course was deliciously and delicately made, with fresh ingredients from all over the world. The selection of fish was superb and there were definitely some unique choices in the combination of flavours which I have not seen elsewhere. The only unsatisfying part of the evening was that I wish I could've purchased their taro ice cream in bulk. It is a small place with a quiet and mellow ambience, perfect to sit at the bar and chat occasionally with the chef (service was of course fantastic). Highly recommended, make a reservation before they become more well known!

Most people visit Shunoko for the $100 omakase and may skip their a la carte menu. Admittedly, it's not extensive, comprised of appetizers and nigiri by the piece with a few handrolls and maki for good measure. Yet, it's a great option for those who want a quick and/or lighter meal. The butter on fire roll ($19) would elicit a fire emoji. While it has a delicate and tender consistency, the little pops of crunch and flavour changes gives the maki interest. While it sounds weird, the hint of bacon and nuttiness from sesame gives the typical shrimp, avocado, and cucumber combination an unexpected flavour. The torched salmon was also done well, using a bit of aburi sauce for creaminess but not saturating the sushi. Similar to the above is the can't go wrong ($20), which substitutes torched scallop for the salmon. The protein gives off a lighter and slighter sweeter finish. If you're in the mood for a unique roll, the coconut spicy tuna ($18) elicits bursts of crunchiness without being deep fried or containing tempura bits. Rather the spicy tuna and avocado maki is rolled in popped rice balls and topped with toasted coconut shavings to give add a lot of crispy textures. It's a surprising first bite that gradually grows on you. For those wanting protein, get a hand roll. The spicy tuna ($12) was stuffed with six slices of tuna, lettuce, and just a small amount of rice. Its spiciness sneaks up on you... the first bite was heavy on the maple soy sauce reduction, but then when the defence system goes down the following filled out the spicy mayo. One of the best hand rolls I've had in a while. While you can order nigiri by the piece, we preferred the nigiri 10 ($70 and $71 from my experiences) that consists of ten pieces of sushi, tamago, and miso soup. It also made ordering easier and was a great option as it already included many of our favourites.

Great value omakase! Shunoko offers a casual omakase menu at $100 per person which honestly is quite a steal! Be sure to make reservations at this little restaurant - you get to choose between sushi bar vs dining table for indoor seating options, but I always recommend sushi bar. Watching the sushi chefs make the nigiri right in front of you has a certain type of charm that can't be replaced. We noticed diners at the tables would be served the same omakase course, although the nigiri would come out in trios on a plate. Not exactly what I'd be envisioning an 'omakase' course to feel like, but to each their own! Shunoko has a chalkboard hung with the omakase course offerings for the night, in case you forget the name of the deliciousness you just devoured. The sashimi platter for the night included Japanese Sea Bream, Japanese Sea Bass, Smoked Salmon, and Smoked Bonito. My favourite of the quartet had to be the Smoked Salmon, since it was deeply infused with a smokey yet not overpowering flavour. The next course was a Tuna Tartare with truffle oil and little crispy bits - the sushi chefs prepare it so that diners can mix all the ingredients themselves before eating. My girlfriend loved the truffle oil, but I felt it took away from the actual taste of the tuna (then again, I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of truffle oil in general). If you sit at the sushi bar, you get served each piece of nigiri one-by-one. The sushi chef gives a brief description of the type of fish served, including region, as it is placed on your plate. Be sure to eat some ginger in between each serving to cleanse your palate. Each piece of 12 nigiri was masterfully made and had a little unique twist (i.e. shiso leafs, uni, sea salt). Obviously, the pieces are already brushed atop with some soy sauce and includes wasabi within, so dig in and enjoy! The rice-to-fish ratio was just right to create the perfect bite. Our favourites obviously included the Botan Ebi (sweet delicious thick bites of shrimp) and the clean taste of the Madai. Shortly after, you get served a Miso Soup rich with fish flavour and a simple, light tamago handroll with shiso leaf, cucumber, and mushrooms. It really was a nice way to end off the entire meal before dessert! For $100, Shunoko really is a steal. While we truly admired the food, the restaurant was at times, too loud between the dining table and sushi bar. It really did make the Omakase experience less intimate. You'll definitely see me back at the sushi bar again!

Shunoko is the next best thing for omakase in Toronto. I hate to say it but Shunoko can raise their price from $100 to $130 a head and they will still see me eagerly making reservations for their incredible omakase; for now, $100 for what they offer is simply a steal. Shunoko offers simple quality ingredients and expertly crafted nigiri. We start with a sample of sashimi, each one offering unique flavours that highlight the quality of the individual fish. Then a tuna tartare with puffed rice served on nori. After these appetizers comes 12 nigiri, most notable pieces are the kanpachi, botan ebi and the otoro, but honestly each piece shined in its own way. Finishing the meal off we have a small veggie handroll and a fish miso broth, ending with a taro ice cream that really emphasizes the taro. We also got a bonus kanpachi at the end and an unagi for the birthday folks. Wine pairing was also available for a measly $34 dollars for a tall pour of riesling to start, and a smaller pour of 3 other distinct white wines. The wine tasting (not pictured) was not bad but I would probably enjoy a sake pairing instead. As per any omakase, the bar seat is the best way to experience the restaurant ambiance and the chef's work. Make a reservation and you won't be disappointed.

Shunoko's move over from St Clair makes this much more accessible with the TTC. Whereas the old location had more focus on table seating, this new space has a heavier focus on the sushi bar. Soft jazz plays in the background. Service is relaxed and friendly. We ended up ordering the $100 omakase which is great value (you can hardly find this price point in the city anymore). Here's what we got: Opening Appetizers: - Soft Tofu, ikura, ponzu - Sea Bass with Ginger Dressing. Surprising firmness. Likely kombujime - Bigeye Tuna (Portugal) & uni from Japan. Sweet and good balance of fattiness. Uni compliments the bigeye well Nigiri and handrolls: - Hirame & Engawa from Korea, with shiso - Isaki from Japan - Madai from Japan, with pink sea salt - Kanpachi, silky, with kinome leaf - Hamachi - Shima Aji - Scallop with truffle oil - Botan Ebi from BC very good with deep shrimp flavour from the addition of a shrimp paste-esque thing on top - Aji from Portugal, light ponzu - Iwashi from Portugal fatty with a wonderful char, got two of these - Akami-zuke - Sakuramasu, light smoke - Mexican otoro - Kampyo, lettuce, mushroom, hamachi, tuna, shiso. Crispy seaweed - Tamago Extra Roll: Can't Go Wrong Roll - High quality shrimp, asparagus, torched scallop, avocado and cucumber. Indeed, you can't go wrong with this. I love that the high level of ingredients from the omakase also get to shine through with preparation of their maki. Great taro ice cream at the end. We also got a $30 alcohol pairing, just look at the pics to see what we got. We were both particularly into the smoky cider from France. 100% go for a good omakase that does not break the bank.

this is currently my favourite quaint, cozy, elevated sushi spot for good reason. it's not flashy or on tiktok, but its the real deal. i came for the nigiri 10 piece course recommended by my friend, and it was basically an omakase since each piece is made individually by the chef then served at the bar. the quality of the fish, rice, and garnishes were so on point, I think comparable to omakases that are double the price or more. some fish was from JP, some from the rest of the world but truly the chef pulled it all together so well. some notable nigiris for me were the horse mackerel & amber jack. the chef was friendly and the one other server there was really nice as well!

There were three add-ons (toro with caviar $25, uni with caviar $35, and caviar sushi). I opted in for the toro and uni add-ons. It was strange they give you the add-ons before any other nigiri. Everything was very good and fresh. Standouts for me was the appetizer, all three cuts of bluefin tuna, the lobster (by far my favorite), and the hotaru ika. I would've appreciated knowing that the omakase included or not included toro and uni before I decided on the add-ons but I don't regret it. It was a splurge night after all. Service was very attentive. Note that the dining space is very small. 12 seats around the counter and two tables. There was a very loud gentleman two seats from me who never learned to use his inside voice and totally ruined vibe. But that's not on the staff. Another note is that gratuity is automatic on the bill.

The space itself leans more modern and clean rather than the typical dark, cozy izakaya vibe, which I actually didn't mind. It felt comfortable, not too loud, and easy to settle into for a slow dinner. We ordered a mix of small plates to share, and everything came out looking nicely put together. The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent. The beef fried rice was straightforward but satisfying, one of those dishes that's easy to keep going back to between everything else.
