Philly Temari x4
Lo C.

This Sushi Shop is located on the PATH by the EY Tower in the food court. It was EXTREMELY busy when I came by to pick up my order. The girls who work there are super efficient and I (thank god) got out of there in no time. The sushi itself is a little different than your usual mall food court sushi stand. They have a variety of different sushi options including temari (round little rice balls that contain fillings), hosomaki (little small maki rolls), and sumomaki (HUGE maki rolls). They are all decently priced for downtown Toronto. I got my temari roll (Smoky Philly) which is a must try. The outside was decorated with a small piece of smoked salmon & the inside: cream cheese, tempura, green onion, and spicy mayo. This was approximately $7 but each individual piece was a generous size (see pictures) BUT still a little pricey in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed the sushi and how easy it is to pick up from the stand. I'll be back to try out their combo deals which seem like a great deal as well if you're just craving 'regular' sushi.

Page from MealPal shows I had ordered food here...which wasn't enough as proof apparently

The worst service!! Partly mealpal's fault It's ~12:05, I placed an order on MealPal, I showed the staff I'm about to scan using the MealPal app, the staff witnessed me scanning, the white screen slides up where the countdown and "Confirm pick up" usually shows. Instead, it's just blank white, staff doesn't give me the food. I close the app and opens it again, Button to scan is gone, no way to pull up the countdown screen with button to pick up. Looked at my reservations, shows meal is picked up. Explained the situation to the staff, staff says cannot do anything about it. I lined up like everyone else, talked to the cashier, who is also the manager. She also says cannot do anything about it and ignores me and serves the customer behind me. Gives me a number to call that doesn't go through. I showed them multiple times that I have reservation here and a screen that proves that with a picked up status that a actually never happend. The most demeaning thing was that the staff just ignored my concern and said I have customers to serve. What the hell, I'm not a customer?

I almost gave up on buying food court sushi until I discovered "Sushi Shop". The sushi here is delicious especially the rolls. My favourite is the "Cherry Blossom" which has a really nice mix of crabmeat, fish eggs, shrimp, cream cheese wrapped with rice paper instead of seaweed. You might find it strange to have rolls wrapped with rice paper but it's actually really tasty. Although it's in a food court, the prices are a bit expensive. You'll easily end up paying about $15 including taxes. They do give you free miso soup. I also just recently tried their Salmon Poke bowl and it's delicious. I think that I can eat this everyday. It's a mix of a good portion of salmon and avocado with tempura chips seasoned perfectly on rice. So yummy!

When I do not have the time, I usually grab my lunch here. It is right below my office and I love the fact that they have already packaged combos which are perfect for the grab and go. The service here is great, I find that I usually still have to wait in the line up for my ritual order, there's only a small aisle inside where there is the line up and to pick up the orders. There's a couple of things that I love getting. I'm a huge fan of their salmon tartare wrapped in their rice paper roll. The sesame dipping sauce is a great pairing with the tartare and is less than 7 bucks. Super filling and delicious if you want to skip on the rice. I also love their shrimp tempera. The quality of their sushi is great, except their avocado rolls can be a hit or a miss. I find that it's mostly not ripe when I order them and I end up throwing them out. But when it is ripe, it's soooooooo goood. Happy Eating fellow Yelpers!

Mostly mayo and lettuce poke bowl.

Made the mistake of being to lazy to walk to my usual poke place. This place (like most other fast food places in the downtown core) was way overpriced and left me hungry and unsatisfied. the service was fine, no line up at noon (which should have been my first clue). I opted for the seasoned salmon poke bowl (that says it includes: tempura, avocado, orange masago, cucumber, lettuce, green onion, ponzu sauce, spicy light mayo, Japanese mayo, teriyaki sauce, Japanese spices, sesame, nori, choice of white/brown rice...all good stuff) but I swear all I could taste was bland fish, avocado, wet rice, and an abundance of lettuce covered in mayo (see picture) I paid $14 for this small poke bowl, and I didn't even end up finishing it. Wont be making the mistake of coming back here again. Back to the Poke Box for me.

I'm weird about sushi. My friends find it strange that I'd be willing to pay up for high-quality sushi, yet would also be willing to eat some not-so-awesome food court sushi. What can I say? It's another of my many addictions/food hobbies/exercise. Um, I'm gonna try to pass off eating as an exercise at my next checkup on account of it works my tummy. Yep, sounds legit to me! When my friends were talking about crappy food court sushi though, I don't think they meant Sushi Shop. It's actually surprisingly decent for food court. They don't try to disguise it as the authentic stuff, although it does carry some of the usual nigiri you'd see in an actual sushi place. I'd skip those though, because while the fish is relatively fresh, you'll find it wholly unsatisfying. The exceptions to this, in my humble opinion, are the seared syake (salmon) and seared izumidai, both of which are always delicious no matter how you torch it. Unique fruit mixes and Japanese mayo options are the way to go for me, and I often enjoy the 5-piece Volcano Roll which mixes chopped raw salmon with "spicy" (in colour only) Japanese mayo followed by a good blast of the torch. My mother favours the fruit combo ones, like the Magik Roll but I find them hit and miss as the mango availability season is short. At their peak sweetness though, I do enjoy these too. Call ahead to book your order, allowing you to simply pick up from the second cash, else risk waiting for 20 minutes for your order to complete if ordering on spot.

Poke!

This is my go to poke bowl or sushi burrito shop at work. If rolltation was closer, I'd go there but the sushi shop will do. They are relatively quick in preparing your order (you can also order ahead in ritual) and the flavour is good.

The nigiri was decent on both deliveries with the rolls being a tad above average. I was tempted to order a bowl but wanted a more filling option. With my go to spot for sushi delivery not showing any signs of revival. This might fill the void for now. 3.5 stars

You can really tell there's a lot of care behind every course. What stood out to me most was how calm and focused the whole experience felt--it made it easy to slow down and actually enjoy each bite. Definitely a place I'd come back to when I want something a little more special.

There were three add-ons (toro with caviar $25, uni with caviar $35, and caviar sushi). I opted in for the toro and uni add-ons. It was strange they give you the add-ons before any other nigiri. Everything was very good and fresh. Standouts for me was the appetizer, all three cuts of bluefin tuna, the lobster (by far my favorite), and the hotaru ika. I would've appreciated knowing that the omakase included or not included toro and uni before I decided on the add-ons but I don't regret it. It was a splurge night after all. Service was very attentive. Note that the dining space is very small. 12 seats around the counter and two tables. There was a very loud gentleman two seats from me who never learned to use his inside voice and totally ruined vibe. But that's not on the staff. Another note is that gratuity is automatic on the bill.

The space itself leans more modern and clean rather than the typical dark, cozy izakaya vibe, which I actually didn't mind. It felt comfortable, not too loud, and easy to settle into for a slow dinner. We ordered a mix of small plates to share, and everything came out looking nicely put together. The aburi-style salmon sushi was one of the highlights for me.. lightly seared, with a soft texture and just enough flavor on top without being overwhelming. The tuna tataki was also fresh and clean, simple but well done. Some of the fried dishes leaned a bit richer with the creamy sauces, but they were still enjoyable, especially if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent. The beef fried rice was straightforward but satisfying, one of those dishes that's easy to keep going back to between everything else. Drinks were a nice touch too.. refreshing, nicely presented, and added to the overall experience. Overall, this feels like a solid spot for a casual night out with friends. It's not overly traditional, but it's easygoing, shareable, and comfortable.. the kind of place you'd come back to when you just want good food and a relaxed atmosphere.
