Came for a super quick dinner and they met the challenge. Server came right away and we were prepared with we wanted to order. Got Bento box dinners. Dinner costs a few bucks more than lunch so I'll just say lunch is a great deal while dinner is ok not bad price. Bento box comes with miso soup and rice. Got soup on cold day hit the spot. Salad was a bit wet so 3 stars for the salad!!! Entrees were pretty good tho smaller portion than some other restaurants but here you get a choice of 3 items while others give 2. Pork katsu juicy and crispy, Saba was moist and nicely salty, tempura hot and crispy and the salmon tender and tasty. All in all a great quick meal. Server came often to top up hot tea. Hot sake to start the meal. Small restaurant but par for local restaurants. Nicely designed and cozy.

Was craving sushi and stumbled upon this new spot. Not sure how long it's been around, but it was new to us and we were down to try! We ordered a bit of everything, and I went for the omakase. Oysters - Just okay. Nothing to rave about, and they were on the smaller side. Tofu - Good texture but a little bland. The sauce helped, but I wish there was more of it. Gyoza - Tasty, though pretty standard. Omakase - Fresh and nicely portioned! The only downside was that it came out last, so I was already getting full from the other rolls while waiting. Romeo and Juliet Roll - The star of the night! Totally lived up to the hype! The flavors blended perfectly, and it was easily our favorite roll. Giants Roll - Solid choice, nothing fancy but still really good. Spicy Tuna Crunch Roll - This one missed the mark for us. The tuna seemed cooked, while we thought it would be raw. The entire roll was deep-fried instead of just having crunch on top. We didn't finish it and didn't bother taking it to go. Hamachi Kama - Really flavorful and moist, though smaller than expected for the price. Overall, it's a great casual spot to satisfy a sushi craving. Parking was surprisingly easy! We had a 6 PM reservation for five and found a spot right across the street. Would definitely come back if we're in the area again!

We've not been here in a bit so decided to come for lunch. By the time we finished, the small interior was full of customers. The 2 item lunch special $20 was enough food for us. They have a 3 item lunch for $25. We added a pair of hamachi nigiri which was tender but left me with a metallic after taste. The lunches came with miso soup (I think my homemade one tastes better) and salad (liked the dressing. Hubby ordered teriyaki chicken and mixed tempura which came with 2 shrimp and 2 vegt pieces. I ordered the shrimp tempura which was 3 shrimp and tge kaki fry - 3 delicious oysters. Over all, happy with the tempura but would order the mixed dish next time and kaki fry. I took a bite of Hubby's chicken and it was tender and the sauce wasn't too sweet. Service was acceptable.

Phenomenal nigiri . Exceptional in freshness and flavor. Left me feeling very energized. My girlfriend got the two piece bento box with agedashi tofu and saba; it came with rice, miso soup and a small salad that was crispy but she said the dressing could be better. The bento was hot and fresh. We also got the sesame chicken, battered in tempura with a slight sesame glaze... crunchy and fresh. I'm already dreaming of returning to eat more of that nigiri. Great service! Cozy ambiance with cool aesthetic details.

We really enjoyed our experience at Sushi Sheng! We put ourselves on the Yelp waitlist and were seated at the estimated time without issue on a Saturday night. I'd note it was busy and the space is medium sized (not tiny, not too big). The fish was super fresh, both the sake toro sashimi and all of the fish in the two rolls we got: the oh my god roll, and my favorite - the Romeo and Juliet. The scallops in the R&J roll were delicious! Food in the photos plus a large hot house sake were $78.13 after tip. We thought that was a great value for the quality of the meal and prompt service.

IMHO Great neighborhood sushi restaurant in West Portal with very friendly staff and service. Five of us planted ourselves in a small booth. Thankfully we fit, fairly comfortably. The seat cushions need to be refreshed, but they were better than sitting on hard wood. We ordered four beers, a bowl of saimin, a bento box w/Korean short ribs, gyoza, mixed tempura & spicy tuna rolls, Spider rolls, Combo Sushi, and Crunchy California roll. My bento arrived without the tempura (which I didn't realize until we got home. I just hope we weren't charged for it since grampa paid the bill.) Food was tasty, and all plates cleaned. I wish my Korean short ribs were more tender. I had to fight to get the meat off the bone. My daughter ordered an extra beer, but that was forgotten as well. Overall, we'll be back.

To be honest, as I've started to explore more of the newer restaurants and eateries dotted along West Portal, I never would've guessed that Sushi Sheng would end up being one of the best. Not that I assumed it wouldn't be, but I just figured it was like so many other neighborhood Japanese restaurants - great for the area, but otherwise nothing all that special. However, as so many of my fellow Yelpers have already attested to, the food here is far better than that! From the outside, the look of this place is rather unassuming, but the inside has a cozy sort of vibe, especially given the handful of booths they have. As for the menu, it'd almost be impossible not to find a dish you'd be curious about. From their lengthy assortment of appetizers, bentos, entrees, rice plates, and donburis to their long list of sashimi, nigiri, rolls, and omakase options, there was no shortage of dishes that piqued my interest than I could count. So much so, in fact, that after thoroughly enjoying my first trip here with friends, we've ended up making several trips back for more! -- HAMACHI NIGIRI (2pcs)...$8.25 Pretty straightforward, but in a good way. The cut of hamachi was slightly on the larger side, the rice was great, and the flavors were exactly what you'd want them to be - fresh and delicious. -- ROMEO & JULIET ROLL - Salmon and Avocado Topped with Scallops, Tobiko, Mayo, and Scallions...$18.99 This was terrific! Obviously, it helps that salmon, scallops, and avocado go so well together, but regardless, this tasted so good. The salmon and avocado were fairly thick and I loved the slices of scallop on top. -- GIANTS ROLL - Shrimp Tempura, Snow Crab, and Avocado Topped with Fresh Salmon and Special Onion Sauce...$17.99 Even though I'm not sold on the onion sauce (it's not bad, just not expected), I thought this was pretty good! The shrimp tempura still had some crunch and they didn't skimp out on the salmon. -- LUNCH BENTO BOX COMBINATION - Agedashi Tofu, Tonkatsu, and Saba Shioyaki...$23.99 (lunch) Mostly solid. The Saba Shioyaki was a tad disappointing (I wish the taste hadn't been so subtle), but the Tonkatsu was surprisingly moist and I liked the Agedashi Tofu (the batter had a slight gumminess, in a good way). -- CHICKEN KATSU CURRY RICE - Breaded Fried Chicken with Curry and Rice...$20.99 Although the piece katsu wasn't the biggest I've had, this wasn't too shabby. The batter was super crispy and the chicken itself was super juicy. That said, the curry itself could've used more of a punch. -- SOFT SHELL CRAB - Deep Fried Breaded Soft Shell Crab...$13.99 Admittedly, I didn't love seeing it served in its original form, but the taste of this was spot on. The batter was thin and crisp, the crab was meaty and flavorful, and the whole thing wasn't super oily. -- CHICKEN KARAAGE - Marinated Fried Chicken with Mayo...$13.99 Given its dark coloring, I thought this was going to be crunchy and overcooked, but it was actually the opposite - the outside was more soft than crispy while the inside was actually quite juicy. -- SUSHI COMBO - Chef's Choice of Nigiri (6pcs), Sashimi (4pcs), and California Roll...$30.99 Not the sexiest combo, but, for the money, this was a pretty decent deal. The cuts of salmon and tuna were really thick and the California Roll had a good ratio of filling to rice. As for the nigiri, all of them were fresh, but my favorites were easily the toro and salmon. -- ICHIBAN ROLL - Mixed Fish and Avocado Topped with Spicy Scallops, Crunchy Garlic, and Wasabi Soy...$16.99 As suspicious as "mixed fish" sounded, this was terrific! I liked how there were various cuts of fish (mostly salmon and snapper), but the scallops were the best part - fresh with a touch of heat from the chili crisp oil. -- OMAKASE - 10pcs Chef's Choice Nigiri...$52.99 Unfortunately, I couldn't catch all of the cuts, but I could easily identify my favorites - the two cuts of toro, the salmon belly, and the hotate were all fantastic. Not that the rest were lacking by any means! Along with the food, the other thing I really like about Sushi Sheng is the service. Each time I've been here, they've always been so friendly and attentive, stopping to check in without being overbearing. If I had one (semi-)knock about this place, it's that some of the prices feel a little much for what you get. Maybe it's because I've seen lower prices across some of my recent travels, but $21 for a chicken katsu curry and $14 for chicken karaage felt oddly high, especially considering how just as many things felt fairly priced. Price aside, there's no question for me that Sushi Sheng stands out from SF's many other neighborhood Japanese restaurants. Granted, I don't think their cooked entrees amaze, but they're still perfectly fine and I'll absolutely be back for their omakase and sushi options. All in all, FOUR AND A HALF STARS rounded down for now.

    Laura C.

It's hard to find a chirashi less than $28 especially in the city, an the quality and thick cut of the fish here was well worth the price. $1.50 oysters the day we were there was an extra perk. Sushi Sheng is a cozy and low-key spot with ample booths for a spontaneous sushi night out.

Found this place on Yelp since it's pretty close to Stonestown Mall... and it did not disappoint. Parking is a little challenging since there's no designated parking area, it's a street parking kinda thing so you might have to go around a few times. The place is a bit small but cozy. Very busy also. Was able to be seated after 15 minutes of waiting which wasn't too bad. Hubby ordered the omakase while I ordered the lion king roll. We also ordered some potato croquette which was delicious! Staff is super nice and food came out quickly. Will come back again to try their other rolls and bento boxes.

The sushi is amazing. We ordered the omakase, and the quality and portion of fish was perfection. We were over the moon to see uni (sea urchin) included. However, the dinner was soured because the waiter forgot our appetizer and multiple requests for water refills. Most likely, we'll be back to try and receive better attentiveness

What's open for New Years Day? This Chinese run Japanese restaurant. They ask for 5 star Yelp reviews in exchange for ice cream which is not allowed per business owners and servers per Yelp rules. We need to be able to tell the truth. Four seasons roll (unagi, real crab, tuna salmon, sauce avocado), negi toro, and the giants roll (tempura and salmon) . Add real crab for the extra $3 totally worth it. The negi toro was the highlight. Fresh and tasty. Giants roll was just okay, tasted rather plain, and the shrimp tempura was on the cold side. The four seasons was way. better So let's talk about the failures. No one likes plastic in their food, and we had it in our roll and it was gross. Worse yet it happened twice. I get they use it to wrap and cut their rolls but for realz, this was annoying and dangerous to eat plastic. Also, beware the rolls that say "snow crab" didn't have real crab. The sunomono salad was lackluster. Hard to find street parking.

Came here for lunch , finally trying this place,, saw menu from yelps post ,, every time I come down here mostly Americans come eat ,, only Japanese restaurant around ,,,since Fuji restaurant closed down few years ago ,, here we were the 3rd table ready to order,, our waitress was sort of rude,,my bff ordered chicken curry bowl ,, taste was just ok ,, truly not real Japanese ingredient curry ,, n it real came out small bowl,, with that price should be alittle more,,, my combo mixed veggie tempura with teriyaki beef , which I asked, can I have a medium rare ???and a waitress say sure, but came out, medium to cook for me,, you see my video of my order is so tiny, compared to other Japanese restaurants,, gooshhh !! I also ordered the tofu appetizer,, the tofu was slightly fried and they put it in a sauce, which it didn't come out crunchy.. disappointing,, while we were eating, I hear argument from the kitchen and kitchen was pretty far and they were speaking to village Asian language. I hear it. It bothers me a lot. It's like I'm in the Chinese restaurant.,, the other customers I guess it doesn't buy them because they're not Asian,, like why I go to a Japanese restaurant ,,and I hear Asians yelling like I'm in a Chinese restaurant !!! they can't be professional professional about it ???? Geezzzzzz.. I'm so bad I'm eating ,, as I keep comparing it from my favorite Kiki Japanese restaurant in Sunset area ..... which is real Japanese own,, even from their kitchen I don't heard any Chinese employees yelling at each other... this sushi sheng I won't be coming again ....

The first time I came here, I got the strawberry matcha latte with my friends. We ordered it via delivery on DoorDash, and I'm not sure if it's just the whole delivery part, but I could not taste any part of the strawberry! It just tasted like regular cream on top. Typically I'm more of a coffee person than matcha, so I'm not a great judge in whether this was good matcha or not. But I guess it did taste ok in my opinion. The funny thing is, my coworker also said the same thing when she ordered the strawberry matcha latte a separate time! Disappointing. A separate time, we also ordered from them via delivery. This time I was eager to try their food items instead, since they have a pretty interesting selection, like those cake sandwiches and various Japanese items. I got the spam masubi, which I thought would be a solid choice. It did arrive warm, but the slice of spam that was in the masubi was so thin! It was the thinnest piece of spam I had ever gotten, and I've gotten spam masubis at a variety of places including ABC stores and other places in Hawaii, and even various stores in the States. The rice was okay, some brown rice thing with seasoning, that was decent but not my preferred white rice. Overall my two times here have been disappointing. I will really never line up for this place in person, nor will I understand why people do.

Update: Iam so impressed with how this was handled. shortly after my first review, the management…read more(Judy) reached out to me personally. they were genuinely concerned about the mistake and the potential allergy risk, which I really appreciated. They quickly cleared up a mix up with the order number and issued a full refund immediately. The onigiri and sushi bake were already hits with my daughter, so we'll definitely be returning soon. My son is still looking forward to trying that taiwanese minced pork bowl

I came here at the recommendation of a friend in the neighborhood, and honestly, my thoughts about…read morethe place so far are that the food and experience were average. Everything about the ordering process and the quality of the food itself was good but not great. There was no wow factor or anything that left me feeling extra motivated to return, but I also wouldn't be opposed if I were nearby and craving onigiri. There's a single kiosk in-store to order at, but you can also place an order with the person working the counter if it's not too busy. I wasn't sure what I wanted immediately, so I waited for one of my friends to finish before ordering. I added 1 unagi eel, 1 unagi onigiri, and 1 crab onigiri to my basket and checked out. I have absolutely no idea what's the difference between "unagi eel" and "unagi onigiri", and when I went to pick up my order, the staff member told me my order was two unagi and one crab. However, I was charged $4.50 for the unagi eel and $4.30 for the unagi onigiri, so go figure. I could not detect a difference between the two, and the price of each averaged out to $4.40, so it's whatever. I unwrapped one of the unagi onigiris to eat in-store as we waited for a Zoox to arrive. It was actually pretty difficult to extricate the seaweed and rice ball filling in one piece to consume together, which I presume is because the onigiris are each made-to-order and due to the freshness, the separate ingredients haven't had a chance to marinate and congeal together. As I had not eaten all day, I quickly devoured the onigiris before and after our short ride back to a café where some of our other friends were waiting. The onigiris were, as I mentioned before, pretty standard minus the fact they kind of fell apart. I would say if you like onigiris, then these will get the job done, but they're nothing exceptional, so keep your standards at baseline.
