Ebisu has been on 9th and Irving for decades however, the last time I ate at Ebisu (many years ago), the restaurant was at the original across the street. I came to Ebisu on Friday for lunch and had a good experience. Luckily, there was no wait for a table for 3 and we were able to find metered parking nearby. I ordered the chirashi, which came with an assortment of different fish over a bed of sushi rice plus a bowl of miso soup. The miso soup was okay - a little light in flavor. I've had better and I've had worse. The chirashi was great. I loved all of the fish that was in the box, especially the salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. I also liked the walu, bincho, tamago, and ikura. There wasn't anything in the box I didn't like. The fish tasted fresh, Our table also ordered the salmon box, fried oysters, tempura appetizer, and a bento box with beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, and shrimp and veggie tempura. The bento box was huge and filling, but didn't come with miso soup. I tried the beef, salmon, and tempura and they were good. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. Came for lunch again today because I've been dreaming of the salmon bento since last time. Also tried the special miso black cod appetizer and my mom ordered the Ebisu Udon. The udon broth and my bento were delicious but the miso black cod def stole the spotlight! It is 10x better than nobu and Roy's in Hawaii. It's flakey, soo moist and the flavor!! It was 100% the star of our lunch today. Service was fast and super friendly just like last time. I can't wait for the next couple weeks when I'll be back to eat the black cod again! read more

Ebisu is one of my favorite sushi spots in SF! They have amazing appetizers. I would recommend the lemon and garlic edamame, and the potstickers. Their bento boxes are also fairly priced and come with a lot of food! Some of the sushi rolls are definitely a bit pricey, but I think for the quality of the rolls it is fair as well. Their caterpillar and rainbow rolls are quite tasty, and also anything with hamachi is wonderful as well. read more

Came here with a group after hiking so we were all pretty hungry. The food was excellent! The tempura was light and crunchy and not greasy at all. I ordered one of the sets and was so impressed. Everything was so delicious, healthy feeling and beautifully presented. The service was excellent. The staff was very attentive, very sweet and polite. Family chose Ebisu as it is a hop skip and a jump to the Botanical Gardens as we had tickets to the Holiday Lightscape show by the way recommend skipping this (see my review on it) as it ends on January 4th. Back to my Ebisu review and as we've eaten here before another solid experience as the place was packed and fortunately we were seated as part of the first wave. Reminder to all who have not been here, everyone must be present before you are seated. No pictures this time as my previous reviews are pretty much what we always have. Enjoyed coming here for an early dinner. Chirashi bowl was $37 for 15 pieces of sashimi -- All were fantastic, especially the yellowfin tuna and the yellowtail. Salmon also great, though rare that I get bad quality salmon sashimi these days. Didn't love the albacore¿ tuna (pale whiter one), as it was a bit fishier than I'd like, but nothing a dash of wasabi can't fix. Also enjoyed caterpillar roll -- I tasted a hint of fishiness in the unagi towards the end, which makes me wonder if it isn't the most fresh of their offerings (ie frozen and not caught), but still enjoyed especially with the creaminess of that avocado. Came here on a Sat evening and were seated within 10 minutes! Food came out quickly, and our waitress was very helpful when we were ordering our food/drinks. Very happy with the service My table ordered the Deluxe Combination 10 pc nigiri sushi set, along with a Family Affair roll and Spider roll. We were all in agreement that the miso soup that started our meal off was just extra incredible for some reason lol, and overall we really enjoyed the meal. Fun place to eat. Waited about 20 minutes and sat at the bar for two. Our sushi chef was so nice and funny, and he chatted with us through the meal. This review is for their sushi platters. I think it's a little secret that they don't do well with advertising. This is a fun option for a dinner party, which we did for Christmas Eve this past year. There are two trays to pick from, $100 or $150. We opted for the $150, which fed us 4 people with leftovers - a 5th person would have worked too. I called a few days ahead of time (not how sure how far in advanced you'd have to reserve) and paid on the spot. The sushi quality was perfect - didn't taste like it was made the night before. It was the same quality as we've had at the restaurant. It was such a deal too, because it basically came out to about $40/person! You can't make substitutions, but that was fine with us. Also some of the rolls are vegetarian, which was a little disappointing, but they were still fun to try. Already ordered another sushi tray for my next dinner party!!! read more

Between food poisoning and a $100 gift card dispute, this was one of the worst restaurant experiences we've ever had. We attempted to pay for our meal using a gift card purchased directly from Ebisu with about $100 left on it. At the end of the dinner, we were told they would not honor it. Management claimed they would call us if they "found a record" of the purchase, forcing us to pay the full balance out of pocket. No follow-up call ever came. To make matters worse, I developed severe food poisoning a few hours after the meal. I had been suspicious of the freshness of the raw fish while eating, and I certainly paid the price throughout the night. I have since tried emailing, calling, and leaving voicemails to resolve both the health concern and the gift card balance, but I have received zero response. We used to enjoy Ebisu years ago, but after being ignored following such a dangerous and unprofessional experience, we will never be back. read more

Spent the night at one of my friends and we could not decide what we were craving for dinner. Finally we decided you could never go wrong with sushi. A quick walk down the street and you will run into a bunch of restaurants. Ebisu was what we decided on. The space is tiny - but what can you really expect in a SF restaurant. We were seated quickly for a Wednesday night and the place was packed at 7:00pm. Leave it to the girlies to not be able to decide what they want on the menu. I ordered nigiri and a bento box because I thought it would be the easiest. The bento box was HUGE. You get 2x protein which I was very surprised about (perhaps I didn't read the description correctly) but it was perfect! We ended up sharing the bento and were stuffed. We lost hope, but when I asked one of the staff about disability accommodations, they got right on it and sat us near instantly. It was like a 10 minute wait, again, on a Saturday evening. We sat at the bar and chatted with the staff the whole time. Two of us got the chef's special and I got the sukiyaki beef. Sukiyaki has become my litmus test for Japanese restaurants and this is the best I have EVER had. The portion was huge, hearty, and the ingredients were varied and tasted like high quality. I could drone on about every element of this dish but I will instead say I recommend their sukiyaki. Be aware, it's hard to finish. I love the whole ambiance of the restaurant, but I will say it's always packed and loud in the restaurant. I don't mind it cause the food is delicious. Besides their rolls and sashimi, the eggplant appetizer is to die for! If you ever pass by around dinner time, definitely don't skip out. 1. We came here for a date night and were really looking forward to our meal but left with a sour taste in our mouths. 2. There was a bit of a wait when we arrived but given the popularity of this spot, it was expected. 3. We ordered the salmon sashimi and it ended up being frozen. Yes, I'm aware seafood can come frozen and we could've waited for the rest of the fish to defrost but it would've taken a lot longer than we would've liked. We ate the rest of our food and when we finally had the courage to tell an employee, we were gaslit by one of the chefs. The employee brought the sashimi to the chef, he inspected the fish while glaring at us, and the employee came back and told us the chef said it wasn't frozen. The kinpira gobo (carrot and burdock) and hijiki (seaweed and tofu) were pretty much the gold standard of those dishes. Versions are rolled out at many a Japanese restaurant but these were stars. I could probably live off a steady diet of only hijiki for a while. Ebisu faltered at the eggplant (no flavor in the vegetable itself, overcooked), but not enough to lose a star. This is an excellent Japanese restaurant in Inner Sunset. I like sitting at the bar to get Nigiris served one by one. I usually have the sushi chefs surprise me with the freshest fish. The sushi is fresh. You know if the quality is good by the quality of the rice too. It is slightly warm and is vinegary. Steamed egg always comes out perfectly. My little one likes avocado roll and fried chicken karaage. The shishamo was small - only 2 pieces but for $6 what can you expect. My friend ordered a pork katsu dish. I was pleasantly surprised that the pork was juicy and the dish was very good. Parking is a little tough in the area. Afterwards, stroll in Inner Sunset for ice cream or Boba for dessert. read more

Was this the best sushi I've ever had? No. Was it convenient and what you would expect with your prototypical SF sushi? Yes. Ebisu has long been on my list of places to try in inner sunset, and the experience was about as expected. Ebisu is your typical sushi bar, offering a decent selection of nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, and specialty rolls. For a quick hit, they aren't your worst option. Both me and my dinner partner that night felt that the fish and rolls were on the milder side in flavor, relying heavily on the soy sauce and wasabi to give it life. Make of that what you will. I suspect I will eventually make my way back here one day mostly for the convenience and constant sushi cravings. Overall a slightly above average experience! read more

They sat us at a table for 4, with no end cap seating because it was squished between two other tables. When I told them it was too tight of a fit, they said it's just how it is. Yet there was a table for 6 available, and there were multiple tables for 4 that only sat 3 people each. The server was a Chinese woman with long orange hair. The food was just mediocre... not bad but not great, just okay. Still left the usual 18% tip but don't expect me to give a great review without accommodating service. I heard Amami opened a location in SF, they have great food and better service. Their SSF and San Bruno locations are always a hit. I'd go there next time. read more

I am thankful that Ebisu continues to be well loved and visited by many. It deserves to be appreciated. It's been around for over 40 yrs - serving the Inner Sunset with outstanding fresh fish. Ebisu is a short distance from Golden Gate Park - perfect if you're looking for some quality picnic fare, or if you are wanting something to eat, after emerging from the park. They offer lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday (they are closed on Sundays and Mondays). You can eat in, get takeout- and even order online (I used to order delivery from here back in the day). Recently I came here with a friend around dinner time. We found a space at the bar. Our server couldn't have been more helpful. I had eaten ahead of time - so I wasn't planning on eating anything. I let the server know, and she was so accommodating. She was quick to bring out hot water with lemon for me. My friend ordered some rolls and a tofu dish. Her order came promptly - and she gushed over how flavorful everything was. We both welcomed the opportunity to catch up together - and we never felt rushed by our server. The sushi chefs were also fantastic. They checked in on us throughout our meal. Watching them gracefully craft rolls - it was evident how much pride they take in their masterfully made sushi. Ebisu isn't necessarily a place you go for ambiance. There's definitely better spots around for a sushi date night etc. But if someone was to ask me what sushi spot I would recommend in the area for quality fresh fish - I'd recommend Ebisu. They've remained consistent throughout the years and that says something. It's inspiring to me - that amongst all of the changes in SF - Ebisu is still around. Great long-time-running sushi spot in the inner sunset. Top shelf sake selection including Dewazakura options. Sashimi omakase is fresh and you get a large amount for the price. Specialty rolls are great too: I like the double hamachi, rainbow, family affair, and behind the green door. If you come by yourself during peak hours, you can often skip the waiting line if you ask the waitstaff if there is a single seat open at the counter.
