First visit back to Ebisu post-Covid. Ebiisu has transformed over the years IMHO into the best neighborhood sushi restaurant in the City. It is not the overpriced restaurant like the ones downtown or the touristy ones near Japantown. All the half-decent sushi bars seemed to have fallen on hard times or closed, but Ebisu has stayed steady. Let's face it. Global warming and fishing regulations have not made a sushi meal any cheaper. How good is this place? It was a rainy Saturday night before Thanksgiving and most restaurants on and around Irving were only half full yet people were waiting 45 min outside. I walked around and saw lots of places to eat but still waited out. Everyone has their keys which make a good sushi restaurant. I have 3. 1. The sushi chefs don't just greet you, but are personable and interact with you. (I sit at the bar when I can) 2. Your favorite fish is always fresh (the Double Hamachi Roll is a must). And 3. They are innovative and have rolls with cool names (especially local ones). Legend has it that they created the 49er Roll which almost everyone has copied. For those who wonder why they have a roll named after Dexter Carter, one of the 49ers worst draft picks ever, it is because at 5'6" he was so tiny and the roll has shrimp in it. Now if you want to know why there is a roll called "Behind the Green Door", well you will just have to go and ask for yourself. You'll get a giggle. read more

The restaurant is very cute and homey space. There are a lot of options from grilled entrees to soups to nigiri and sashimi and rolls. We ordered a seafood sunomono, sea bass nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, omakase plate and a rainbow roll. The rainbow roll was pretty good with a nice variety of fish and and crunch. The salad was decent with a nice acidic dressing. The nigiris were also well made but felt a bit pricey for the quality. Unfortunately, we were disappointed by the omakase plate. While the serving size was well worth the $45, the tuna and albacore were not amazing quality. I think if you're looking for decent sushi at a reasonable price Ebisu meets that bar. But if you want better fish, there are better spots out there. I would come again to try their hot dishes. read more

Been coming here for years! This place is my favorite spot for sushi ever since Fuji on West Portal closed. IMO, the best things to order here are definitely their raw items and some of their appetizers like the lobster dynamite. I especially love their salmon and tuna belly sashimi, just absolute perfect, buttery fattiness. My mom regularly buys salmon sashimi for herself from various places, but when I get her an order from here, she'd take a bite then immediately go, "You went to Ebisu?" The freshness of their sashimi items truly stands out. The one star off? I'm not all that impressed by their rice dishes and bento boxes. Those dishes are nicely presented and not bad... just not great, either. It's like those items are just there to fill the menu for people who might want rice dishes, they feel really average for a restaurant like Ebisu. Also, their wait times can be really, unbelievably awful; sometimes, a simple to-go order for one specialty roll can take 1.5 hours! That's insane!!! The reason I like ordering to-go? The sit-down dining experience can be incredibly loud and overstimulating. During peak dinner times, the place is PACKED like sardines, and the sound just bounce chaotically around. I'm often really tired afterward from the noise; food aside, the eating experience here can be low-key stressful. The staff is ok - nice enough, but a bit brusque because of how busy they are. My personal tips: go at lunchtime if you can. If you go for dinner, try to line up around 4.30 before they open, or go in about an hour before they close. You'll probably get seated faster then. It's also seems easier to get seats if you're open to sitting at the bar. Also, good luck with parking and driving in that area. read more

Been going to Ebisu for years and stopped by here for lunch after a stroll at SF Botanical garden. Sushi is always fresh and there are many things to try. I recommend the lemon garlic edamame for appetizer and the Double Hamachi Roll as an Entree. Service was fast and efficient and the space filled up quickly on. Saturday afternoon. Ebisu is one of my favorite sushi spots in San Francisco. It was the first place I visited when I started eating raw fish. It's an excellent introduction for those new to raw fish, as it's incorporated into rolls in small bits rather than large pieces of sashimi. Was looking at sushi spots in SF that aren't Omakase only and this one was highly recommended by lots. This is a popular neighborhood spot, tables filled up within 45 min of opening on Thursday night. I got the Dragon roll, Family Affair, and Hanukkah, as well as salmon belly and tuna belly nigiri. The nigiri were pretty good, they were on the fresh tasting side rather than fatty/heavy even though they were belly. Their Family Affair (roll consisting of tuna) was also really refreshing, the garnishing and sauce perfectly compliments the roll. The dragon roll was pretty standard, nothing that wowed me; I noticed one of the pieces were fake crab/lobster? I was surprised not all pieces had eel. Lastly, the Hanukkah was pretty unique. The fried salmon skin tasted like the outside of takoyaki to me. This roll doesn't have any sauce so it's on the lighter side, but I really liked the fried salmon skin in the middle, never had anything like that in a roll. read more

I've been to Ebisu a few times for lunch and dinner, and the food has ranged from average to excellent. My usual go-to is the chirashi bowl. The quality, flavor, and variety of the fish is quite average. What was particularly impressive, however, was a recent seasonal menu item that came with cold udon, chawanmushi, and ikura/salmon don. All three items were flavorful, fresh, and delicious. The wait for a table can be quite long during peak times so I try to come on "off" days when possible. We were on vacation and stayed at a VRBO. The host recommended Ebisu. We went on a Saturday night, around 6pm, expecting a wait. We lucked out, as space opened up at the bar - we prefer sitting and watching the chefs' work their magic. My wife ordered Sashimi Omakase - 18 pieces of 6 types of sashimi, chosen by the chef. The slices of fish were generous. And the price, compared to ordering a single fish, was very reasonable. Since we had a late lunch, I only ordered a single roll - the Rainbow Roll. It was loaded with salmon and tuna. I liked it was not thick with rice, but just the right balance of fish to rice. It had a stick of cucumber that added a nice crunch and freshness. My wife had wine, a 1/2 bottle of Sauvignon Blanc (cheaper than buying a glass!!) and I had a Sapporo draft. Service was prompt and the place was PACKED!! When leaving, there was quite a few folks waiting for a table. A nearby Japanese restaurant, 2 doors down, was nearly empty. Tells you a LOT! Parking can be tricky, but we found a spot in Golden Gate Park, a couple of blocks away. We definitely recommend Ebisu! read more

There's even a 10 piece omakase nigiri set if you want to try a bit of everything. It's a family friendly spot but can also be a date spot. The space is tight inside, with the back of someone's chair pretty much up against your table. So be mindful of your range of motion if you don't want to accidentally bump into someone lol. Prices are fair but lean on the pricier side, it's definitely not a budget friendly restaurant if that's what you're looking for. The quality of food is quiet good though. I can tell all the fish was fresh with no fishiness whatsoever. Don't skip on the appetizers, there's so much to choose from! The host was kind but when we let her know we would like to add another person, the older woman (manager or owner) was visibly annoyed despite the table next to us being empty and the restaurant half full. Unfortunately, after that point this unhappy person took over and the service that followed was all downhill-- rudely collecting plate settings loudly from our table despite us ordering rolls we stated were to be shared (in addition to an entree each), sighing before loudly dropping a few plates back but only for half the table, collecting our food/utensils before we were done eating (it wasn't close to closing). Maybe she was having bad day or the popularity of this place got to her head but it made for an incredibly uncomfortable awkward lunch for us. I came in on a Friday with a friend around 5pm and we were able to get sat immediately for a party of 2. The restaurant is pretty small with bar seating and a few tables. We ordered the edamame with togarashi lemon, per our waitress's recommendation, as well as the salmon belly nigiri and a few other rolls to share. Everything was absolutely delicious and well portioned. It felt like as soon as I took a bite and finished a piece, I wanted to eat another one immediately after. It's that good. One other notable item is that our waitress was very kind enough to let us know that a large party was going to arrive and if we wanted to order more food, we should do it now, before it takes a long time. Ebisu is a fancyish sushi restaurant located in the sunset. The menu is pretty fish heavy with limited noodle options. I came on a weekday night and there was no wait, and we had quick and attentive servers. Tables are a bit cramped together, but it felt ok to me since it wasn't too crowded when we got there. I got the swamp and dragon rolls, and I will say I was a bit disappointed. The swamp roll looked strange since it has seaweed salad on it, not very aesthetically pleasing lol. The spicy tuna in it was definitely spicy, and I think the roll had almost too much of it relative to the rice and seaweed ratio, it was kind of overwhelming to eat. The dragon roll was delicious though, there was plenty of eel on top and lots of flavor from the sauce. I liked the freshness and quality of the fish, but I think the swamp roll just wasn't really what I wanted or was expecting. I've been coming here pre-Covid and haven't been back since. I remember loving this place as their specialty rolls are my favorite. On a Friday night, there was a wait list (unfortunately no online waitlist option and you have to place your name in person) with about 6 people ahead of us. Inside, there's some bar seating as well as tables but it's typically smaller tables (for parties of 2-4). We waited about 30-45 minutes, but we were able to kill time by walking around the area. We ordered the: *lobster dynamite *dexter carter (shrimp and salmon) *Romeo and Juliet (scallop and salmon) *rainbow roll (assorted fish and shrimp tempura) We also ordered 2 large beers to go with our meal (definitely more than enough volume for 2 people to share). For some reason, I remembered the rolls being bigger, but was a little disappointed when they came out. Taste-wise, I enjoyed the freshness of the fish. Our total after food and drinks came out to a little over 100, which isn't bad for sushi in the city. Ebisu is still my go-to spot for more affordable, quality sushi in the area. read more

I walked into Ebisu for sushi but what I got was a full on love affair with fish and my BFF Kyle the sushi chef who is basically the equivalent of a warm miso soup hug honestly the whole restaurant when you walk in is the equivalent to a warm miso soup hug. The sushi chefs are sushi super hero's with capes with the best recommendations. I'm convinced they are all sushi psychics. All the staff makes you feel like you are a part of the ebisu family not just coming for dinner. The service is the best and the food is soo yummy!! Mandatory always get the crunchy roll I'm considering proposing to it, sorry Kyle. Kyle also recommended we try the nigiri featured in the picture it was so buttery it melted on my tongue like it was auditioning for a Michelin star in my mouth. The romeo and juliet roll had bigger salmon chunks than I expected, and the scallops had a slight sweetness to them. Everything was delicious, tasted like high quality fish, and served pretty quickly! This was really nice since we were all super hungry. We loved all of our specialty rolls we got, especially the salmon and lemon roll (lemon was sliced extremely thinly on top, and added a nice fresh flavor that wasn't overwhelming to the whole roll). I do have to say though, I felt it was a bit expensive compared, and service felt a little off due to high volume of people. I remember i came to Ebisu several years ago and i ordered the Toro. It was so good. The toro melt in my mouth because its very fat, and oily. I cant forget about it ever since. This time i come, i do have high expectations for the restaurant. We ordered some sashimi, sushi, Unadon and some Japanese oysters. First of all, they cut the sashimi in very small pieces. It's totally smaller than before. And the toro is not high quality because it has tendons in it and its not oily at all. The salmon belly taste no different than the normal salmon. The hamachi taste fresh but a bit fishy. I felt very disappointed in the sashimi giving the high price. As for the sushi, the uni is creamy but its not sweet. The other sushi is just normal quality. Nothing special. I like the sweet shrimps the most. The best dish today is the Unadon. Big piece of unagi on top, and seaweed in between the unagi and rice. The sauce is just the right amount of sweet. Its a good combination. The rice is soft too especially with the sauce. I'll only come back for this dish if anything. The waitress said the oysters are from japan. They are small and not sweet at all. I don't really like it. Overall, the quality definitely fall over the years. Date night! We tried this restaurant for the first time for dinner. They don't take reservations, so you sign up on a clipboard when you arrive. It's a small, cozy space, and we only had to wait 15 minutes on a Wednesday. Our server, Nori, was excellent. We ordered a few yummy appetizers, like seaweed salad, edamame, and shrimp tempura. The hand rolls were great, with fresh, crispy seaweed--there's nothing worse than old, chewy seaweed! We also loved the "chef's choice", and my favorite was the Romeo/Juliet roll. Saw that it was highly reviewed so stopped by for lunch. Omakase: I got the Omakase sashimi which is 15 pieces of sashimi selected by the chef. I was under the impression that it would be 15 different fishes but it was 15 pieces where 3 pieces of 5 different fishes. The texture of the fish was too mushy and required more chewing than what I would have expected for sashimi. The fish also had a bit of an odor and did not seem that fresh. 2/5 Service: The servers were extremely nice and attentive to our needs. 5/5 I think the rolls were more popular here so maybe that's why Ebisu is highly rated.
