Love this restaurant. And not just for the sushi. Try this place at lunch. They have great lunch specials. I love the lunch boxes. A large square "plate" with 4 or 5 items plus soup. When we go for supper, I cant force myself to order anything besides the Mandarin Stuffed Eggplant.. Seafood somehow stuffed into bias cut eggplant in a dark delicious sauce. My Husband is a big fan of the Hot Braised Shrimp. My daughter loves the Pad Thai. The restaurant is small but set up well. I used to really like this place and came here around once a month. The food is pretty good and reasonably priced (I would have given around 4 stars). The service was never spectacular, but some waitresses were really nice. However, what got to me was the management. The manager was rude to the customers and even worse to the servers (and cooks from what I hear). The last time I was there, the waitress made a little mistake and made ME PAY FOR IT. He yelled at her on the floor and didn't give me the price difference. That was the last straw and I refuse to go back. This place was SO GOOD! We stopped in the middle of a ten-hour road trip. The sushi was plenty tasty and the service was polite and speedy. We were on our way in no time, very happy we had stopped. The Black Dragon roll was nice and spicy - the heat builds, so go slowly. The Alaska roll was soft and delish. Nigiri salmon was very generous and so so yummy. The smoked salmon nigiri had more wasabi than expected, but was still delicious. Total with tax and tip was in the $30s. We thought it was very reasonable. If you do not like sushi, they have more on the menu so there are a lot of options. The lunch menu is nice however the dinner menu is an encyclopedia. Ok I have to say that so far my favorite place to have Asian food is Formosa in Iowa city. I tell you this so you can understand my standard. I had crab Rangoon from sushi house. It came piping hot. Definitely too much wrapper and too much creamcheese/not enough crab. The miso soup was excellent but the bowl had stickiness along the side as if theyjust tore off a sticker. The nigiri sushi was very well done. Absolutely better than the nigiri in Formosa. Fish is absolutely thin but with substance, and the rice was compact and didnt fall apart. The sushi rolls had too much cucumber, was salty (so I really didn't use a lot of soy sauce) and was really thick. It held together fine but was quite a mouthful. Rather than giving me six thick slices I wish they gave me eight more manageable bites. Overall I had a good experience. Waitress was friendly when I asked for water. The bill comes with a fortune cookie and that's always fun. (If I follow my heart, I'm going to be successful. That's good, right?) The prices are good barely payed 15 bucks. Its a good deal. The seating is beautiful and there are really nice bamboo trees around. Added the following morning: I was violently ill last night and I can reliably trace it back to sushi house. What a shame. It seemed like such a great place to return to, but I don't want to get ill again. read more

sushi here is probably the freshest so far in Iowa and they offer a lot of different options for nigiri, sashimi, and maki rolls. I love their chef special ginger crispy beef, crispy chicken, and mandarin stuffed eggplant. Service is pretty good, but can sometime get a little chaotic and rushed, but what can you expect from a place that's constantly busy. Every time I come in to order food it's always pretty packed with customers and that's a really good sign. Reviews from the Asians was that this is as good or better than the food they get in their home country. Ever since moving to Iowa 5 years ago it was very hard for me to adapt, I still find it very hard. I have such a strong love for the Asian culture and cuisine, but Iowa falls very short on variety and options. However, I came across Sushi House and they have met my every expectation. Sure their shellfish is not as fresh as it could get, but it'll have to do and they definitely work well with what they have got. They have a variety of sushi rolls as well as sashimi and other unique dishes. Unfortunately, I have not tried the Chinese side of things and I have no real intention to. Who knows though, I may just start eating chicken again because some of their chicken dishes such as the sesame chicken look quite appetizing. Give it a try! You won't be disappointed. read more

I Used To Come To The Sushi House Often With My Mother (It Was Our Place) I've Been Coming Here For Years & Have NEVER Had Bad Service Until Tonight . Me and my friend went in to have dinner . We where dressed as if we had just woke up but it doesn't matter we where very hungry . And we come in , the gentleman seated us . And we waited 10 minutes just to talk to someone about drinks (there was about maybe 8 other people in the restaurant). By that time we where ready to order . As we did . Then 3 other couples showed up and where helped immediately . I had ordered two sushi rolls received one .( and when I had ordered he has made sure I said two) waited another 10 minutes for the other . And then I was given the wrong check . At that point I wanted to talk to a manger . So I asked politely . And a woman came over very rudely I explained and she says "What's Your Point" ? I had the pleasure of going here for the first time on my girlfriend's birthday and have gone back many times since. I ate quite a bit on my first time and have tried many things since. The sushi is, by far, the best in town. I have been to Hong Kong, and the sushi here is very close to authentic. Of course, it's not perfect and not as good as the "real" stuff, but it's pretty close for the midwest. The other food is good, too. The egg rolls are absolutely incredible; I recommend everybody to try them. The service is very good, and the atmosphere makes me want to stay longer every time. All-in-all, it's a good place with good food. I would recommend it to anybody, not just sushi lovers. All of the food is good. For being in the midwest, this place is definitely a treasure. The price is a little bit higher than other Chinese restaurants nearby, but at a much higher quality. In addition, the sushi isn't too expensive as far as sushi goes. It depends on what you order. My favorite place for sushi in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City region. Sushi House offers a good diversity of sushi dishes and does them very well. The sushi tastes fresh and clean and is well-prepared. Inside décor is typical sushi/Japanese style. The owner is Chinese and the Chinese dishes are very well prepared and tasty. The hot and sour soup as well as the miso soup are good, but nothing special. instead go for the seafood soup for 2 for $6.95. You can get 3 small/appetizer servings out of it. The fried tempura is a good choice as well. Try some of the Chinese Chef specials. My favorite is the eggplant stuffed with chopped scallop and shrimp, then fried and topped with a tasty black bean-based sauce. The ginger crispy beef is one of their more-popular entrees. This restaurant is very popular and does a very good business each night. Expect a short wait for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. A very solid 4 star rating. read more

Well, I have to start writing reviews of these restaurants, I'm so tired of terrible food in this town and service, not even important, just give me some good food already. This was the second visit, I thought I would give it another try as the 1st time was not so good, but I thought be open. 2:00PM on a Sat. afternoon. We waited at the "desk" for 5 minutes for a table to be cleaned. We were finally seated, waited 8 minutes, walked up to the desk to retrieve our own menus, not a good start.....breath, it will be ok, another 5 or so minutes the server stopped by, place bev and apps order, apps ...........20 minutes for 2 orders of crab rangoon. I always appreciate anything that is made on site, however, a purse full of poor c.chz and onions and more onions, sauce tasted like flowers of some sort very strange. Main course, spider crab roll (where) battered shells and iceberg lettuce and I was even willing to pay for the spicy mayo because it is served dry, no sauce????........WHATTT. Pad Thai, don't bother, an easy Thai dish, now I know this is a sushi house, but if it's on the menu, do it at least mediocre. Gen. chicken, so over cooked neither of us could even chew it. Will NEVER go back. Just sad. read more

Sushi House has the best sushi in Cedar Rapids. There is not even a close enough second to mention. The construction, presentation, the flavor and the variety are as good as it gets. I've eaten at sushi places around the country and Sushi House is right up there with any establishment in a much larger market with closer proximity to the coast. Basically everything on the menu is very good. Some of my favorite rolls are the spicy tuna, tuna maki, negihama, etc. The special rolls are very good. The Fire Dragon Roll with Tuna over spicy tuna is amazing. The dragon roll is very good as well. Their Chinese food is also amazing. Specifically, the Happy Family is amazing. Prices are very good with regular rolls around $5 and specialty rolls around $12. If you really appreciate good sushi, go here. If you want as much sushi as you can stuff into your face, sushi that is falling apart and bland, go elsewhere. read more
