Really big, fat, delicious, and fresh sushi rolls in the most unexpected of places: a small sushi restaurant attached to Clark Street subway station. Yelp pointed me here, and my boyfriend and I ordered the following rolls: Volcano, Alaska, Explosion, and Romantic Sunset. Holy sh*t, the special rolls, particularly the Volcano, are amazing and filling. I mean sure, you don't get the ambiance of a nicer sushi restaurant, but if all you care about is the food then you will be more than satisfied. The special rolls are priced around $10-15 (comparable to other places) but much bigger, and they are generous with the fish. In addition to delicious sushi, they have the best rice, the most delicious seaweed salad, and most amazing Japanese drink selection. But my favorite thing of all is their ginger. We went on a Sunday for lunch and the place was pretty empty. Despite this it took some time for us to get someone to take our order. However, the wait was worth it. The sushi was delicious and pretty reasonable (sushi is expensive, so this isn't cheap, but it is reasonable for good sushi). I was surprised by the quality of the sushi pieces themselves (nigiri, not rolls or sashimi). The chef was very generous with the fish. I would definitely recommend this place and plan to be back very soon. I would also note that they will ask for ID for sake even if you are clearly over 21. I haven't been carded in sometime but since I didn't have it no drink for me. Sake is pretty reasonable, starting at $4 for the cheapest option. read more

The location was quite small and nondescript, but once I started eating I was extremely pleased. The food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Happy that they are near my place. I have been to many high-end sushi restaurants, and this place is one of my favorites more so because I feel that they prepare the meals more like a family than as a business. I generally don't fully trust restaurant food the same as ones made at home, but I can trust this place 100%. I go there partly nostalgic of my mother's meals. I wanted to like this place, I really did. I'm local and would love to add another sushi restaurant to my "go-to's" so I convinced a friend to try Sushi Gallery with me for take-out. My major issue (my friend noticed it to) was that the sushi rice had a slight soapy taste to it. Yes, soap, as if maybe they didn't rinse the rice pot fully after they cleaned it. I ordered the sweet potato roll and was just expecting sweet potato but got a roll with avocado, sweet potato, and sauce, and the sweet potato had a grainy texture to it. The additional items on the sweet potato roll weren't bad, but given that it was in part for my kids, they made it inedible to them. I ordered directly from the restaurant and had a hard time finding a menu, but the one I found didn't provide a description other than "sweet potato" so I just wish it was more descriptive. The spicy crunchy tuna roll had what looked like balls of rice crispy cereal on top, and I'm used to the more shredded fried crisps. They also didn't include the small cups to put soy sauce in, and since I was eating my meal outside it made it more difficult than if I was home I would've had a dipping bowl. But I'm not a fan of plastic waste so I can't get too mad at them, but it was bad timing. The wasabi was melted and fully touching the rolls near it in the container, which again for me wasn't a big deal, but made it so that my kids they wouldn't eat those rolls. Also worth noting that they add 3.99% if you pay with credit card (the prices listed are if you pay in cash). They didn't have bulgogi (they said they only have sushi) but maybe that's a covid thing? Maybe I'll give them one more chance but based on my first visit, I'm not very hopeful unfortunately. read more

I'm literally writing this review while I'm here.... it is SO GOOD. Let me start with- I worked at one of the top sushi restaurants in Los Angeles for 6 years as a server then a bar tender. Rarely do I write reviews and especially about sushi spots. I would put their fish up against the best. Honestly, the environment of many sushi places can make you think it's better than it is. There should be more places like this in every neighborhood. I stop by here a few times a month for takeout / grabbing food on the way home from work. There's no bells & whistles or pretense, which keeps the prices very reasonable for decent neighborhood sushi...no, it's no Sushi of Gari, but it's still reliably and consistently good food. I've also had some of the hot food (such as the bim bim bap), which again, it's not like going to a spot in K-town, but still pretty good. But most importantly, it's run by a very nice couple . - exactly the kind of people you want running small businesses in your neighborhood. They are pretty quiet, but thoughtful - e.g., they usually have a stack of magazines for customers to peruse while you wait (which is never really that long anyways) for your takeout food - and there was one night when it was pouring and the wife saw me standing right outside the restaurant, along with other people who just got off the subway, waiting for the rain to let up - and she came out and offered me an umbrella - she said she knew I would be by soon enough for food and sent me along my way. We also ordered a few sushi roll combos, and a Korean rice and sashimi bowl. The rolls were alright, but the Korean bowl was poor, with bland rice, and strange warm lettuce. For the price and quality this place is really as good as it gets. A lovely couple solely runs this store, so they open at 3 daily and are closed on Sundays. My wife loves sushi, but she has a sensitive stomach and can't bear slightly off or substitute fish. She visits this sushi restaurant sometimes multiple times a week, usually for take out. We also go once in a while on Friday nights for date nights, it's usually quiet and has a cozy atmosphere. My favorite roll is the explosion roll - it has everything I like: "shrimp tempura, eel, and avocado, with a spicy tuna crunch on top." I used to order two small rolls, but this is super big and I usually only order this. But you can get appetizers, miso (or other) soup or another small roll if you think that's too little. My wife likes the Clark roll ("spicy salmon, with yellowtail, avocado, wasabi tobico on top") and the spicy salmon roll. She likes the Kani Salad. We've also had the Edamame, but you can't possibly mess that up, right? Only downside, if you consider it to be one, is the location. Right inside the subway station. But it's actually pretty convenient if you're taking the 2 or 3 and there's poor weather, no need to step outside in it, for that leg of your trip anyways. read more

Excellent sushi place hidden inside the Clark station of the 2 & 3 subway line. The restaurant is run by its owners who are the ones that cook and serve you. Mom and pop, like they call themselves, are a true example of a well established shop that has build their clientele over the years because of the fresh food they serve and the top quality of the ingredients. The menu is extensive and has a lot of great options that I believe you cannot go wrong with any choice. We ordered four rolls and it was plenty of food for two persons... And we were hungry! All the rolls either simple or special are generous in size and consistent. No falling rice or rolls that dissolve in the soy sauce. You can tell they are very well constructed and they don't skimp ingredients. You get big pieces of sushi and fish. And top quality! We had the Alaska that was bigger in size and ingredients than any other Alaska roll I had in my life. Then the Big Mae is delicious but a little bit overwhelming since it comes with every seafood you can imagine so the five pieces you get are huuuuuuuuuge. Anyway, the flavor is amazing! Then the stars of the meal were both the Firecracker roll and the Tuna Love roll. They were heavy on spiciness but the taste... Oh my god, astonishing!! I guess if you can ask for mild spiciness then it would be a blast! Unless you like a little bit of numbness in your tongue.
