Service was good. However, the food was not fresh, and just under warm when we arrived for the Sunday brunch buffet. Some of the sternos were out, and no refills were made on the items that were low. We will give it another try during normal lunch or dinner hours to get a better food experience. My advice is to schedule brunch reservations at the start time, rather than at 12 noon like we did. read more

From the food to the awesome atmosphere- you need to come check this place out. The food was beyond good. The atmosphere was amazing. They have a live acoustic guitar player that great. I and the ribeye which was great but my wife's Korean rib were better. Update: We had the Sunday Brunch on Easter and it was amazing. They have a omelet bar, crepe bar, with a craving station (lamb and beef). The had every thing you would want for brunch sushi to Eggs Benedict. I am updating my previous review! After actually trying this place a couple times, I really enjoy it. It's great for date night or Sunday brunch! They have bottomless mimosas! They food is really top notch. They have a decent variety to choose from; this goes for cocktails and wine, as well. My hubby dubbed his salmon and couscous the best that he's had! I love their outside seating. My only qualm (and reason I am withholding the fifth star) is their odd hours; and as I had mentioned in my previous review, they are hard to get ahold of and shut down randomly for private events or whatever. Well this place was a delightful find. We were coming from Livermore for a show and wanted dinner before. This place was great, so great I think it will become our go to place in Modesto. A lot of the products were out and if they weren't out or empty, the food was cold. I think it would be a better experience if you offered 4 to 5 key breakfast items and serve them hot. Uhhh....thought I was going to eat good food and get great service. But I was rather disappointed. I ordered Korean kalbi and the cut of the meat and sauce was not even close to kalbi. I wondered if I got the pork ribs instead. The kimchee was not your regular Korean Kimchee. It was not good at all. My boyfriend got curry chicken and there was so very little sauce. The chicken was quite dry. As far as service , the waitress totally ignored me when taking orders for drinks. She proceeded to ask everyone else around the table for appetizer orders. Not until I turned around to look up at her then she was like you want a drink. I was very annoyed. Again she refilled my boyfriends water cup, turned around with the pitcher and left without refilling my cup which was 3/4 empty. Not right. Was it cause I was the only Asian at the table amongst white folks. This is how the whole experience made me feel. I will never return or make any recommendations to this place. read more

Didn't catch the name of our server but she was so sweet and apologetic for the wait which wasn't that long and worth it anyway because food was so good. Nice ambience indoor and outdoor. Pricey but worth it! Husband and I will be back on our next special date to try their other items on the menu. The lumpia was extraordinaire. Lechon was sooooft, and crispy on the outside. I love the Abita rootbeer! Salmon was so soft and the sauce was tasty. Nothing special about the taste of the burger, thick patty though! My first time having dinner at Surla's. I had been to a wedding there a few months ago and the food was good. I ordered the clam chowder first. I was impressed with clams, no potatoes, in a white creamy soup. I ordered the Robert steak and my friend ordered a new item, seafood risotto. My steak was cooked med rare perfectly. The flavor was excellent. My friend enjoyed the seafood food risotto from the new revised menu. Lots of flavor. Servers Jacqueline, Elizabeth and Christian were very attentive and so polite and nice. I've lived here 10 years and this is one of the best meals I've had in Modesto. The restaurant has a classy atmosphere and is is very clean. This place should be packed every night! I made a reservation for Valentine's Day and we arrived a few minutes early. We went inside only to stand around with about 30 other people who had reservations at the same time and none of our tables were ready. We were seated in the back room 35 minutes after our reservation time, and the ambiance was like that of a retirement home dining room. There were no linens on the tables and we were given paper napkins. I wasn't made aware that there was a "special" menu for that evening until we sat down. $90 a plate for a 5 course dinner. The lobster bisque was served in a shot glass, the shrimp salad had 2 shrimp next to a small pile of greens. I chose the filet mignon which was a piece of prime rib cut into a triangle and smothered with a red wine sauce. The prime rib was delicious, melt in your mouth...but it was NOT filet mignon. Our waters were never refilled. They were overbooked and understaffed. It was very disappointing. read more

Winter for Valentine's Day. It would've been nice if we were informed either personally when I made a reservation or via the website that they had a prefix menu. Which was fine. We have no problem with that. We had a reservation. Waited 45 minutes for our table.. We work in the restaurant business so we understand so we sat at the bar. Had to wait 25 minutes for one drink we were informed by the one bartender that she had to give drinks to all the seated patrons first. When we finally were seated, we were definitely seated in a room that's more for Meetings. Very ugly room with a giant projector no pictures on the wall or anything. We had a shot of a lobster bisque, which tasted OK would've been nice if there was a little piece of lobster on top as I did in my restaurant in the Bay Area. Second course subpar basic salad Our third course was forgotten altogether. They had brought our fourth course and we had to ask for our third course which they forgot. Our server said do you still want that and we said absolutely. Once we had our third course instead of then giving us a new fourth course which is fillet Mignon. They just kept it warmed up for us which they informed us so now our medium rare meat was now medium and medium well. Nobody filled up our water. We had to ask. We purchased a bottle of wine. I refilled it every time myself. You would see the servers going out with food, not knowing where it was going. Our dessert was a crème brûlée. If anyone knows what a crème brûlée is, there was caramelized sugar on top. There was no caramelized sugar. It was just a big bowl of mush. The truffle and whatever the pink cookie you were sucked too. With the bar tab dinner tab and tip over $300. Absolutely sucked will never go back there again. The portion was small and the sauce had way too much garlic and no meat. My wife had the braised short ribs which were just okay. The dessert was from a production line and mediocre. I hadn't been to Surla's since the pandemic, but I was disappointed with the quality of service. The atmosphere could have also been much better. I had to ask the server to light our candle. The total cost including tip was $140 for the two of us, and that did not include drinks. We should have stayed home. We've come a long way. I've gone from total indifference to total love for this place. The lumpia is super tasty, & I don't even think about starting a meal here (or at Lola's, their sister restaurant in Hilmar) without it. Have you ever ordered a salad, only to be presented w a sad concoction that included wilted, bruised, brown, & dry leaves? Well, this was the antithesis of that. Every leaf was perfect. Where am I? Did Alice Waters bring this lettuce in from her personal garden?! This Caesar salad looked so good, I'm thinking of printing a copy of the pic that I took, & putting it up on my fridge. Sunday brunch... Sunday brunch is fabulous. Omelette station. Crepe station. Carving station. About 10 hot dishes (riblets, house made sausage, eggs benedict, French toast), 10 cold dishes/salads (fresh fruit, pasta salad, sushi rolls), & at least as many pastries & desserts (coffee cake, turtle brownies, profiteroles, lemon tarts, raspberry crumb cake). Bottomless champagne, prime rib, live guitar music serenading you... It's my favorite place to be on Sunday now. The tiramisu is fantastic. Be warned, it goes fast. My first visit, there was only one slice left before I sat down to eat, & by the time I finished my eggs, it was gone. My second visit, it was down to barely 2 slices, before noon! I mentioned this to our server, Andrea, who was great btw, & she was gracious & rock star enough to bring us 2 slices from the kitchen. Haven't been here in years and we were excited to go out for NYE. We loved the idea of the fixed menu and the signature Velvet Rope drink was delicious. Everything was good until the food started coming out. It was out of order and some of the apps were skipped. We got the sorbet when we were in the middle of our entree, they skipped the first appetizer and we had to tell the waitress, and then had to also ask for the other app that we never received. It was kind of a mess and it really wasn't that busy so we were confused. The waitress was apologetic and we understand that things can get kind of hectic but THEN we were charged twice for a glass of wine that we ordered and never received! We were also never given the last dessert item. Overall we were disappointed. The food was good but it was stressful having to ask the waitress for the incomplete orders. To be completely transparent, we planned to go to a different restaurant last night but we didn't realize prom was yesterday and the place we had in mind had a long wait. I've had mixed experiences at Surla's but that was a while ago and we were close by so we decided to give it another shot. It turned out to be a great choice! We got right in and the food was fantastic. We started off with a tasty salad followed by a ribeye dish. For dessert we had the crème brûlée. The taste and texture of everything was up to par. There was a good selection of beverages so no complaints there. The gal that waited on us was attentive and friendly. Last night, this place checked all the boxes. Such a great dinner. Came here for my moms birthday and our server ERIC (hopefully I spelt that right) was AMAZING. He went above and beyond. He recommended what dishes we should get was just super on it tonight. If you can, ask for him to be your server. We were also waited on by a younger looking blonde boy who was very nice and helpful as well. Dirty martini was fantastic (with grey goose) I didn't get to take a picture of the Calamari but it was absolutely delicious. It was breaded lightly and tasted so fresh. I will never order it from anywhere else now that I have truly tasted the best there's no going back..... it wasn't rubbery and thickly fried like how you would get at any other restaurant or chain. We were excited about Sunday brunch, as we'd been to Surla's many times for brunch pre-covid and it was excellent. Service and ambiance was still great, but food was lacking. All buffet entrees were cold and had not been refreshed. They were out of some of the offerings and those stations just sat empty without being replenished while we were there.
