We stopped by the Java Hut this morning for two Cafe Lattes, a bowl of oatmeal with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, shaved coconut and cinnamon and a fruit, granola and yogurt bowl. Lattes were awesome, snd our breakfast bowls were beyond expectations. It's a delightful location to stop and continue a morning walk on our way to Aliso Beach. I'm into the smoothies here but not really the coffee drinks, for coffee I'd go other places around here but the smoothies are pretty awesome. Maybe it's the espresso they use but it just has an odd taste to me, I'm sure other people like them and not that it's funked up or poison or anything I just don't care for the coffee drinks. Smoothies are solid though and it's an interesting place to sit and have one with a muffin or some sort of baked good. I think I passed zillion times by this coffee shop but was never interested to enter, for some unknown reason. This Valentines Day, I was meeting the 2 first girlfriends I met in my new American life when I moved from Spain. So we ended up celebrating our 15 years of friendship having some coffee and sodas at the Surfdog's Java Hut because we did not really agree where to go plus everywhere seemed packed, plus it was just the first spot we saw. So we were all surprised to realize it is a very cute place with an awesome and relaxing patio all painted in "Greek island style" colors, with the most charming plants in colorful pots, and that strawberry mini table that served a perfect temporary container for our gifts exchange. It is a good vibe place. Outside, at the street level, you will find many cyclists having a coffee break (I even coincidentally met a couple of ex colleagues) and the interior is also very attractive painted very tropical. My pic doesn't do the acai bowl here justice. In person it was one of the most beautiful displays of superfruit I've ever ordered. The girl who made it said it was some of her finest work and it was almost as delicious as it looked too. This little coffee bar isn't right on the beach, but it feels like it is as a result of the interior, the regulars, and the staff. It's laid back as you would imagine a place by the name of Surfdog would be. The coffee was good a came out piping hot, but I didn't love the wrap that we ordered. Not sure if they ever prepare them fresh, but the one we got was sitting on display which definitely left a little something to be desired. There will be a small handful of times when I will stop in after my friends are done surfing at Swamii's and get me a quick afternoon pick me up. The team here is super nice and friendly. Surfdog Java Hut has a wide menu of so many different drinks, but my favorite that they have it the Chai Bomb. I've gotten it a couple of times and a must is getting it with soy milk. Called across the street to Goodonya (only because I was looking right at it) some girl answered and would not take a phone order for me, even though I was on the phone I was told to go online-really? So I called Surfdog. The girl was so sweet, helpful didn't hesitate when I asked if they had Acai bowls, said they were awesome too. She told me it would be ready in five mins. I showed up, had a chat with both girls, told them my story and they weren't surprised, they always have bad service there as well. The bowl was ready, so reasonably priced, made with obvious love and also served to me that way. It was awesome, fresh ingredients, lots of granola at the bottom so stir! I was bummed I didn't know it was there and a ton of it just sitting in the bottom. Quality food at a reasonable price, what more can you ask for. I will be back, no doubt!! Okay Surfdog's, you've won me over. You are now officially my favorite coffee house anywhere. Numero Uno, Primo Top Dog Terrific. After several visits the friendly staff became even more friendly. We learned that they even welcome dogs inside too. What? Yep, the true surfer beach bum laid back attitude still exists at Surfdogs. They even have a big cozy sofa so our whole crew can relax and chill out. Smart move on their part too, as we always end up staying longer and spending more money. Not only are the coffee drinks fantastic (they have the beans roasted locally yum!) but we've discovered that they also make wonderfully scrumptious fruit smoothies in all different kinds of combos. A welcome & healthy refreshment after a long warm day basking in the sun & surf. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. They treat us like family & VIPs, even our dogs too. Usually the minute we arrive one of the baristas has the habit of throwing little dog biscuits at our feet as we approach the counter. Best Dog Welcoming EVER. There's is also seating outside in the back garden area and on the sidewalk. It's always chill inside and relaxing. They make really great smoothies and although I don't drink coffee they have a nice variety of specialty drinks that look good. I like Surfdog a lot because it's a mom and pop, the smoothies are really good, there's no long lines and they have a great little patio around back. I'm a big fan of supporting mom and pop because the big chain places will most likely never have big problems making a profit. I usually stick to the windandsea smoothie or the cloud smoothie which is peach and banana. When you first walk in there is a small dining area but if you go to the door to your left it will lead you to the back patio which has more seating. A good portion are Ma+Pa but more and more spaces are turning into Phil's, Better Buzz, and other joints that some may deem "hipster" because they're either well decorated, corporate, or have big windows. On the last stretch before Swami's beach, you'll find Surfdog's Java Hut, a quaint shop with a tiki roof. This one is my favorite in San Diego county because it's understated, cozy, "off the beaten path" In terms of how hidden it is, and always filled with local kooks reading the paper and hanging out. The back patio is adorable if you need some quiet. The menu is great - from smoothies with fresh fruit and no syrups to toasted bagels with toppings (humus, cream cheese, avo, pb, jam, you name it).
