Cute place. Not to sound cliché but it did remind me of a little coffee shop that could be right in Hawaii. The two ladies that were working seemed really nice and helpful. We took my niece and the gave her a little monkey to hang from her juice. She loved it. I had the "love potion" coffee and the bagel with cream cheese, tomatoes, and turkey. Their smoothies are packed with fresh fruits, the tea selection is quite extensive, the ambience of the place is friendly and laid back, just like Encinitas is known for. I enjoy the Crackatoa bagel (cream cheese, tomato, cracked pepper) and take a spiced chai late to go and walk up to the Self-Realization Fellowship... it's really quite nice. I give it 4 stars because the help is definitely lacking. I have not been impressed with the service. One woman didn't even know what a spiced chai late was, other times I order it with no problems. It's unfortunate to see only one employee working on a weekend because they are often somewhat busy. Their hearts are in the right place, but how hard is it to work at a coffee shop? read more

Stopped by Surfdog for the first time yesterday. I didn't have cash on me and asked where the closest ATM was. The barista told me not to worry about it, filled my order, and told me I could just swing by later with the money. I had a delicious soy latte. They definitely respect their coffee here- the beans weren't burnt (like certain popular coffee chains) and the latte was served at the perfect temperature. I was there with a two year old, and everyone in the shop, baristas and customers, was friendly and talkative with he and I both. Great coffee, great vibe, great people. After walking on the beach and visiting the meditation gardens today on Memorial Day weekend, I just wanted an acai bowl but Swami's was packed (as usual). After standing there in the unmoving line for a few minutes, I noticed this cute Java Hut across the street and decided to check it out. I wasn't disappointed! I had resigned myself to just getting a smoothie but they have acai bowls complete with honey, nuts, blueberries, coconut, banana, granola! Also had an unsweetened blue lotus chai which was deliciously spiced. A few outdoor tables and indoor ones (I opted for inside), it was a great place to read the paper and journal with the lovely rejuvenating smell of locally roasted coffees filling the air - plus can't get over the much smaller line! The ladies here are super cool and very accommodating. Holly filled not only my dogs water dish but, gladly filled the gallon container I had with me for my dog Buddy. Anita specially made me a large blended Chai Bomb that's not on the menu. She even gave me the extra in a separate cup with a smile I must say that's customer service! They also showed a lot of interest in my dog Buddy and gave him cookies from their stash of dog treats. I'll be back for sure! read more

Walking down the 101, I was looking for a coffee fix. I happened to stumble on this place, not even realizing it was there in the past. The ambience is a little divey, but comfortable. That usually doesn't turn me off of coffee shops. I'm a big fan of cold brew, but I was informed that all they had was iced coffee. You wouldn't think there'd be a big difference, but because the coffee is hot before it's poured over ice the flavor isn't quite the same. My iced coffee was just OK. The primary draw for Surfdog's is its sense of community. Directly across the street from the exponentially more popular Swami's, its loyal rotation of regulars and consistent, familiar faces behind the counter provide a comforting environment interrupted only by the occasional bp-bp-BPRAPBP! of a passing tiny-balled motorcyclist asserting his virility down South Coast Highway like a toddler on a diving board calling repeatedly for his mother to watch him dive, Mommy, Mommy watch, you're not watching... The second draw is the fact that they are, as far as I can tell, the only place where you can get free wireless in downtown Encinitas. Starbucks? Must have T-mobile. E-Street? Must have Cheetah or get a coupon for a half hour's use. Java Hut is free and unlimited. [note: If anyone knows of other places downtown with free wireless, I'm very open to being wrong here.] The smoothies are fantastic, pastries are fair, coffee drinks are good to very good, pleasant outdoor seating and, unlike Swami's and their ceaseless turnover of North County's Cutest, the service is knowledgable and consistent. read more

On my morning drive to work from Carlsbad down to La Jolla, I often like to stop for a latte. I tried out many of the Coffee shops along the 101 but had not found one that made consistently good espresso drinks, which means I often ended up at Starbucks. I finally gave the Java Hut a try, and have not been to Starbucks since. The coffee here is infinitely better. My wife and I have been coming almost every morning since my first discovery. As others have pointed out, this place has a real local feel, and many of the morning guests are regulars. The baristas spend quite some time on the individual espresso drinks, and that is the reason why it sometimes takes a little bit more time. I don't know about you, but I rather wait 5 minutes for a perfect latte than get one in a minute with overthrothed milk, like you tend to get at Starbucks. read more

GREAT place, especially if your a coffee freak like me. They always make my drink correct and in a timely matter. I get the same thing almost every time, CHAI BOMB. I don't know what it is about theirs, but its the best in town. Great staff too, I'm pretty sure he's the only guy that works there, I don't know his name, but he always makes my chai bombs the best. Summary: Best coffee in Encinitas. Thrift store furniture, laid back atmosphere. Service is a throw-back to simpler times. They take orders one at a time, they're prepared and you pay, cash or check only. Better hurry up and wait because there's no corporate assembly line here, so a line will often grow. If you order order food, have a seat, you'll be waiting even longer. I really do think this is a good thing. Never once have I felt rushed or that my order did not receive the best attention. Located very close to the Meditation Garden in Encinitas. This adorable coffee shop is very welcoming with plenty of seating inside and outside. The service inside is top notch while the music playing is relaxing and enjoyable. I have never had a flourless brownie before so I thought I would give it a try. Ohhhh my god to die for! Seriously I want to know how to make it that's how great! It's a cute surfer/tiki looking coffee shop. Yummy options all over the boards. Not just coffee drinks , they have a ton of tea, smoothies and food. We went during the fires so there was ash flying around outside so we decided to grab our treats to go. We will be back to relax and enjoy our time at this cafe. Thanks for yummy drinks and great treats. I fondly refer to this establishment as the Monkey House as they put little plastic monkeys dangling from the straw of their smoothies - yes, I'm easily amused, but I love monkeys! I often stop by here on the weekends during my weekly bike rides up the PCH. I love the smoothies here - they use lots of interesting combinations and I love that they have coconut in many of the options. I haven't tried any of the baked goods - they are usually out by the time I get there (late afternoon). read more

This is a small neighborhood joint with a relaxed beach-style ambience. It is definitely the place to be if you are into spending a few relaxing, tranquil moments savoring your beverage and having interesting conversations with wonderfully friendly patrons and staff. Not the place to go if you are running late on your way to work and trying to get a quick fix. They have an Open Mic every Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Totally Zen place. Very laid-back. Very much supported by the locals. Owned and run by neighborhood folks. Alot of surfers and musicians are regulars here. After going to the beach, I stopped here to grab some caffeine before heading back home. This place had a really cool vibe/atmosphere. All of the people seemed super chill and artsy hanging out and the lady that helped behind the counter(which I think was the owner) was super sweet and had a great way about her. I love this place and even have a favorite spot where I like to sit and read, I always get a medium dark chocolate mocha with foam (but they have amazing smoothies as well.) There is one barista though that just doesn't to seem to be too friendly, though I come in all the time, support the biz, and people even know "on a first name basis", she doesn't seem to smile at me at all, doesn't acknowledge other guests if they walk in and she preparing food/drink, she doesn't even nod or anything!
