New spot in Urbana gets two thumbs up. Tried the mussels, shrimp, and rockfish tacos. All were excellent choices. Mussels steamed in coconut milk with tons of yummy veggies rocked. Will come back for another bowl very soon. Margarita and Mojito were just OK. Maybe ingredients like agave just wasn't what I'm use to. Surf theme was cool but the streaming of surf video is a little Hollister like and overkill. Friendly and attentive staff makes this place a great spot in Urbana. A new local favorite. read more

I took my daughter & my very picky 4 year old granddaughter here today for lunch. From beginning to the end everything was great. The awesome manager Connor was an absolute delight to meet & talk to. We had the lava bowl & toro toro salad. Along with the dumplings for a appetizer. Then my picky granddaughter who by the way finished her quesadilla smashed her chocolate cake for dessert. I have many friends all around Frederick& surrounding areas & I will be sure to tell all of them about this awesome new gem in Urbana. can't wait to bring others back here for cocktails maybe next time. lol. I only heard of people being discriminated but never really experienced it myself until tonight. Hence why I decided to write even though I had a very long day. I so happen to be in the neighborhood for a business and decided to give this restaurant a try. When I walked in, I was greeted and was given a table fairly quickly. I waited for the waiter/waitress to come soon after and bring me some water like you would normally expect any restaurant to do. But as I waited n waited, no one came to greet me, bring me water, take my order, absolutely nothing. So after about 10-15 minutes of sitting, waiting, looking around to get some attention, I contemplated walking out, but I decided to sit tight n see just how long they were going to ignore me. I watched number of waitresses walk by me several times. And this place isn't big at all, but no one said a word to me. Not even "someone will be right with you". The bartender looked over n looked away. Someone that looked like a manager looked over n ignored. So finally, I turned to the greeter who was only a few feet away and said, so is anyone gonna wait on me?? Before I could finished my question, she said someone's coming. Unbelievable I thought. Wow! Is this what it feels like to be treated like you're not welcomed? The waitress finally came and I let my face be shown that this was not right and that I was disappointed. I tried to make the most of my dining experience here. The waitress offered me a free drink on the house as she said, since I had to wait a minute. While I appreciated her effort, it was not a minute I waited. Then I watched people come in one after another being waited on immediately. Every single one being Caucasian, I couldn't help but wonder hmmm... what are the chances. Now as for the food, I ordered a burrito and it had lot to be desired. For a $13 burrito, I expected it to have more meat in the filing than rice n beans. And it didn't even come with salsa or sour cream. No chips. I ordered a side order of chips n salsa. I will say, though it was salty, it was hot n crispy. In this line of business, I get that you can't please every palate. And when the food isn't all that great, a good service you receive can make up for the difference. And if the food is decent, you might even come again. But if the service is bad or bluntly rude/or dare I say, discriminating, no matter how good the food may be, there is no way you will be going back. At least not for me. The burrito was a glorified Taco Bell burrito. The way this restaurant treated me was disgraceful. read more

Interesting place in a pretty uninteresting place- Urbana. What used to be a charming, sleepy little farming community is now yuppie blight, but I digress. We just ate at the Surf House for the first time tonight. Waited about 20min for a table on a Saturday, which wasn't bad. They do need to work on how they seat guests though, because a lot of people came in after us and were seated first. Overall, the wait was reasonable. Ambiance is great. Lots of cool surf details, comfortable chairs, not too many tables where you feel like you're on top of the table next to you. Started with the wasabi calamari appetizer. Delicious! Fried to perfection and the wasabi mayo was a great addition. Large portion too, definitely big enough to share. I had 2 tacos - mahi mahi and ahi. The husband had a red snapper taco and the lava rice bowl with rockfish. All were excellent. The salsa and slaw on the tacos was super fresh and well seasoned. Ended with key lime pie and coconut pie, both served in glasses. Excellent. Fresh, tart, and a great way to end the meal. Service was ok. I expected it to be a little shakey since they're new. Our server didn't bring our drinks until we'd asked twice for them. Didn't get any refills, despite asking. And only after we ate dessert, did she finally ask if we needed refills. I can look beyond that, I overheard her telling another table most of the wait staff was new to the restaurant business, so I know they're learning. What a great addition to the Urbana food scene! My family had to sample a variety for our first visit - the Goony Foot, the Shark Bait, the Big Kahuna, and of course a famous fish taco (with plenty of Asian-inspired slaw). Everything was fresh, huge portions, tasty, and the presentation was fantastic. My burrito had a few tiny pieces of shrimp shell, showing that it is as fresh and natural as advertised. The Cucumber Coconut Refresher and the Blueberry Citrus Sparkler were a nice change from sodas, and were also very good. Urbana is lucky to have gotten such a unique restaurant! Love the vibe of this place...it has a west coast beach shack sort of feel with the colors, the decor and the tv showing a surf channel. The food is unique as well. Took my sister here and told her its kinda a taco place and she said she wasn't in the mood for Mexican but I told her it is far from that (don't get me wrong - we love Mexican). Hubby who lived in Hawaii for 10 years always gets the loco moco burger without the bun since thats how its done in Hawaii. He loves it and is so excited to be able to get this sort of cuisine so close to home. I tried the lava bowl with ahi which was very good and unique like everything else about the restaurant. It said it was stir fry so I expected typical stir fry type vegetables however it came with unexpected things like spinach. Very good. Also had various tacos which are huge, the calamari which is also huge, the ceviche and the banana pudding (hubbys fave). Oh and my sister had the mahi sandwich and loved it. Absolutely amazing restaurant for those of us that have some dietary restrictions. They are committed to organic, grass-fed, range free and wild caught which is pretty impressive and incredibly hard to find in Maryland, mainly in Montgomery county. Our kids ordered their loaded nachos, sweet chili wings and a crab cake burger with sweet potato fries. The adults ordered a crab cake with a cesar salad, ceviche and the shrimp with rice and rice and beans. Everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Their guacamole and Cesar dressing are a must. The service was great, they have some pretty laid back and friendly waiters and hostesses. What I enjoyed the most was the décor and ambience which reminded me of my days in the Caribbean! read more

There were three of us in our party and we had dinner. We all ordered different items so we could share-but there was no sharing. I had the Rippin Roast Chicken, which was 1/2 a chicken. It was tender, juicy and perfect. It was also huge so we had it again the next day at home. My husband had this Taco that had Crab, shrimp and something else. It was supposed to have lobster but they changed the recipe. It was delicious. The tortilla was fresh and all of the ingredients were cooked perfectly. My daughter had the Point Break Burrito and it was eaten before I could taste it. Zero complaints about dinner. We did share a Margarita Cupcake and I'm still wanting another. We are so happy to have a fresh-new dinning experience. Thank you so much for all the hard work. We will be back often! read more

We really wanted to like surf house on our first visit there. Our server was friendly and recommended the tacos. We ordered the nachos that were supposed to come with mounds of meat-some kind of pork, chorizo and chicken mixture and ordered ahi tuna and fried oyster tacos with sweet potato fries on the side. The mounds of meat turns out to be about 3-4 meatball size pieces of meat that I had to move the guacamole around to even find. All we could taste on the tacos was the slaw, very disappointing since we paid extra for the tacos for their premium meats. The sweet potato fries were amazing but the portion size was lacking. Our once friendly and responsive server disappeared after we ordered and did not check back to see if everything was ok until it was time for the check. It was also disappointing to watch our food sit on the pickup window under a heating lamp. Needless to say, we will not be returning. read more

We ordered 3 different burritos so we could taste-test. All 3 were fantastic! We did the same with dessert - also fantastic! Our server, Sarah, made us feel like regulars even though it was our 1st visit. My daughter asked about the Coconut Refresher & Sarah explained what it was. My daughter was a little hesitant & Sarah offered to bring her one to try & said that if she didn't like it, she'd take it off the bill & bring her something else. Awesome find, right off of I-270. Food is terrific, but the must-have, which we would never have ordered if the waiter hadn't told us, is the catfish on a biscuit!!! I know, I'm not partial to catfish either, but this dish is like fish-a-la-king over fresh, homemade biscuit. The entire thing melded so well & was delicious. The tomato salsa on top was really a great twist, too--I asked if they sell it, and luckily in a month or so, we were told they are opening a fish-market/deli with bottled sauces. My boyfriend and I were seated promptly BUT that was the extent of prompt service. Took about 10 min to get water (received from the bus girl), and another 5-7 min for our waitress to come. I don't know if the kitchen or front of house was short but from what I saw, two male waiters and a female chick in glasses (who was our very apologetic waitress) were the only ones busting their asses to keep ppls drinks filled and tables clear. The bus girl and the long haired hostess seemed to not want to be there... if so don't work in the SERVICE industry if you're not enthusiastic about serving others. It's kinda infuriating watching 3 girls crowd around the hostess stand figuring out who is gonna wait our table and we don't even have the waters we were promised. Finally, as mentioned our waitress in the glasses was apologetic because she was not made aware she'd be taking care of us (Probably bc she was elsewhere busting her butt. Literally this girl was all over the restaurant doing tasks that seemed unrelated to her position: waitress). Knowing this we decided not to waste anymore time and immediately ordered our food and it was typical gimmickey beach food. Do NOT order the $8 Chips & Guac... very skimp and you'll have a waitress ask you if you want more chips... when you have 0 guac to dip them in and chips left over. To be honest the guac tasted like the pre mashed Sabra guacamole we get at the store. Just not worth it, especially for $8. The crab cake sandwich delivers on their "no filler" advert and the remoulade was very tasty, fries were crispy and tasty as well. It's not our waitresses fault our experience wasn't the best, thank what seems to be disorganization among the hostesses and waitstaff. We will not be back. Unfortunately, it wasn't the food that left a bad taste in our mouth but the overall lack of organized and prompt service. Pace is something this restaurant needs a lesson in. read more

I had a chance first eat here last week and I have been back two times since. A shrimp and chorizo burrito was recommended to my by my server, I had some reservations, but wow was it good - and fresh!. 20 beers on draft, great new décor and a neighborhood friendliness make this a great place for lunch or dinner with good friends. Note: I believe they are still in their soft opening. There is no sign for the restaurant, the menu is a work in progress, and some staff are still in training.
