This was my 3rd time taking a cooking class at Sur La Table but my first time at the Carlsbad location. The other 2 times were at Newport Beach (on Avocado Ave with Chef Angel) and had great experiences due to the instructor providing clear instructions and demonstrating "how to" skills and tips. Newport location had a camera (over the instructor) and large TV screen where we had an up close look) Carlsbad location did not have this. We could barely hear the instructor whenever the fan went on and she couldn't hear me when I asked questions. One of the other participants went around and helped us. The cooking class was for Thai food and when the instructor demonstrated how to wrap the dumplings, she demonstrated on round shaped wraps but we were given square shaped wraps. We couldn't really follow along. By this time I gave up asking questions since she couldn't hear me unless I walked up to the front and asked her. I was pretty disappointed as I was celebrating my friend's milestone birthday. read more

Took a "date night" cooking class, great instruction, we made scallops, risotto and a chocolate soufflé with caramel topping. Took my bestie and we had a ball with our fellow students. Chef made it easy and answered all my dumb questions. The meal came out amazing and I look forward to my next class! read more

I came in with a discontinued Sur la Table product that broke. the Manager, Simona was absolutely amazing! She was on a mission to help me. It took so much digging and research but she found what she needed to help me replace it. I love how they stand by their products and couldn't appreciate Simona more. Thank you! read more

The cooking classes are highly overrated and overpriced. You pay around $100 per participant, but when you go in a group, if one group has three people, they pay $300 for their ingredients, and a group of five pays $500 for the exact same amount of ingredients (about $20 worth of food.) They workspace is very cramped, and the whole time the instructor chef is talking, other employees are clanging pots and pans getting ready for the next group. Unfortunately, the end product, that you get to consume, is way below what would be considered good in a mediocre restaurant. All I could think of was the delicious meal I could have eaten for $500 in a restaurant. Eventually you get rushed through because the next group is coming in. They need instructions in how to cook good food, and how to actually teach cooking. Sur la Table is closing stores around the country. Hmmm. read more

I came here many years ago for a cooking class (with my awesome grams). The class was alright but nothing memorable. I recently stopped by as I was in the area and waiting for Anthropologie to open its doors. SLT seems to have gotten a bit more cluttered than I last remembered. There's just ALOT of stuff inside this shop. Which isn't a bad thing right. It definitely let's an OCD mind like yours truly go crazy with ideas for her kitchen though. They are like a William Sonoma but with a larger in house inventory. There's spices, wine glasses, coffee makers, bbq stuff, etc. There's a small sales inventory in the back of the store so don't forget to look for that. The reason for the write up today is b/c of Toni. She works the espresso machines at this location and took the time to show me a few different models. Plus, she makes a serious cup of joe (see pics). They currently have a $75 club credit when you buy one of the nespresso machines. That's actually a pretty darn good deal. Not sure how long it'll last though. So yeah. This location is nifty. They were having a souffle class later that day and one of the guys even gave me a recipe handout for that class. Me likes :) read more

I don't recommend the cooking classes especially anything to do with raw fish. Me and my partner were gifted a cooking class here over the weekend making sushi and we came with excitement and high expectations. The store itself was very clean and the staff were somewhat friendly, those aiding in the cooking class were extremely helpful and overall happy to be there. But the class itself was a nightmare. The chef teaching the class seemed like she didn't prioritize actually teaching and would rather get the 2 hour session over with, not to mention it seemed the entire kitchen was totally unprepared for how many people were in attendance. We had to share ingredients intended for two people amonst four, as the staff claimed they were short on everything including the sushi rice spoons. Between 4 people we shared a single bowl of rice (which we ran out of and couldn't even finish making the rolls we paid to be there to make ), shared limited ingredients, single knife, what's the point of signing up for cooking classes to learn how to make these things at home if between 4 people we each have an individual job, not to mention the pacing of the class itself felt as if we were being rushed. Everything was explained once and then the class carried on, we were given minimal instructions even with using the knives. Two people in attendance weren't even supposed to be there, they paid for a different class on a different day but showed up anyway. And guess what? When the couple that had actually paid for two seats in this class showed up just shy of 10 minutes late the chef turned them away. Claiming she was already to far along in the class and there just wasn't enough ingredients for the two people that actually paid to be there and not the people that showed up before them. Wish we could have given them our spots instead because I regret taking this class. At one point I actually found myself just standing there upset. Angry. How can a cooking class be so horribly unprepared if most of those in attending paid in advance, ingredients were the cheap stuff from Costco or Ralph's rather than from an actual Asain store. There was no flavor, there was no actual instructions, no connecting between chef and student. Here's the fun part, I believe I now have a mild case of food poisoning. Something was off about the tuna we used to make "spicy tuna hand rolls" it was pale and almost white, not to mention the taste was extremely acidic and tasting it alone without any other ingredients it was bitter. Almost like the cuts we received were unbleed and way to young, I don't know how they defrosted the tuna since the chef didn't actually say but the fish was hardly edible. My partner who actually fishes blue fin even made a comment during the class that something was wrong with the tuna, I didn't think much about it until I was mincing my shared portion of it and noticed it was nearly white and there were nerves in the meat. This was a tail cut, not the soft belly of the tuna. We ended up throwing away our sushi rolls after trying to force ourself to eat them. Literally wasted time to travel there and the cost of the class for something we would have been better learning from a YouTube video. read more

I came to this location to return a Christmas gift. I have a lot of older La Creuset bakeware and the casserole bakeware that I asked for and was gifted was drastically different in terms of quality. When I tried to return it with the sticker still on and receipt in hand, the employee asked me if I used it. When I said no, she told me it was past the 30-day return policy. Then after I told her that it was a gift and there is an extension on the gift policy around the holidays, she refunded the amount to the original credit card even though I told her it was a gift. I've been shopping with them for years and have taken many classes at their LA locations, but being treated like some sort of scammer is making me look elsewhere. read more

I booked a cooking class with them for my brother's birthday. They called me with less than two days notice to cancel because they did not sell enough seats. I'm now trying to find another thing for his birthday last minutes they will not honor your cancellation with less than 48 hours notice, but they are happy to cancel on you. I've purchased several classes from them in the past and am now very disappointed. Also, my money has not been refunded for this expensive class. Do not count on them for this kind of thing. read more

Had such a wonderful date night experience here. Michelle, the cooking instructor was so much fun. The class was laid back, informative and the meal was delicious. This place is amazing! They have everything a cook/baker would need. A person can literally spend hours in the store looking through all the cool baking "thingamajigs." If you want to make Madeline's, they have the Madeline pan just for it. They have a wide selection of sizes, colors, and material. If you no longer want to use the traditional metal pans, they carry the silicone version. For first time visitors you might get lost and feel overwhelmed; Especially if you are looking for one specific item. The employees are very friendly and ready to help. I would say the two ladies I have met know where every single item is and what that item does. What I found pretty interesting was the back of their store. It is a separate area that is used for their cooking/baking classes. They have a variety of different classes each month that is geared for all ages. Note: Everything in this store is on the pricey side. read more

Sur La Table will once again be at my table for the holidays. Even though I've got table linens o' plenty, I couldn't resist all the new holiday table decor they have available. Super cute and super festive! While I'm a recycling, reduce-my-carbon-footprint freak, I cannot stand "reusing" table-scapes during the holidays. While I'll reuse a few items, my dinner guests will think an entirely new tablescape has been created just for them. (wink) Sur La Table has many different holiday linens that you too can have at your holiday table, here are a few items I picked up: Fun Napkins: http://www.surlatable.com/product/tabletop+%26+serving/holiday+phrases+napkin.do Napkin Rings: http://www.surlatable.com/product/silk+poinsettia+napkin+ring.do?keyword=napkin+rings&sortby=ourPicks Additional items to help me in the kitchen: --Oven to Table Bakeware - Revol Oval Bakeware: 2, 3 and 5 1/2 quarts are perfect for small to large dinners. Completely functional and timeless pieces. It's sure to add elegance to any table! http://www.surlatable.com/product/revol+belle+cuisine+oval+baker%2C+%26%23189-+qt..do?keyword=revol&sortby=ourPicks I purchased the 2 and 3 quart right before Thanksgiving when they were 20% off and after using it the first time, they easily validated the heavy price tag these dishes come with. They're absolutely beautiful and easy to work with--and clean up easily too. Plus, they have a lifetime warranty so if they break or chip, you get a brand new one. I was so impressed, I had to go back and get the larger dish to add to my growing-by-the-day collection of kitchenware. Dinner with my girlfriends next week is sure to be fab thanks to Sur La Table. I'd recommend Sur la Table any day. The staff is ALWAYS super friendly and helpful. There is always someone there to help you out. Even if you just want an opinion. read more

During our move, the coffee maker didn't get packed. If you love coffee as much as I do, you know what a crisis this can become. And as much as I like my local cafe, I declare this a.... COFFEE EMERGENCY. We needed a new coffee maker stat! We dropped in on this location of Sur La Table as a family on a mission. Trish sprang into action and was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, providing information on my top two contenders. Her wonderful customer service, warm personality and cheery disposition were just the icing on the cake while sending us home with our new machine. It's locked and loaded (grounds and water ready to go). I'm ready to roll out of bed in my jammies tomorrow morning and enjoy a cup of coffee like this hiccup never happened. One of the best shopping retail experiences I've ever had. This store is super fun and awesome to just walk around as well!! I came in here the other day because I wanted to expand my baking carriers and took a look at the cooking section. As I was shopping I was greeted by Toni. She really helped me find the one that would fit my needs and carry the most to my potential. Super helpful. I love it. As I continued to walk around I was just taking a look at the coffee machines with my friend. She's always wanted one and Tara came over to help us out. My friend was asking a lot of different questions... Questions I didn't even think to ask, but Tara was able to answer all of my friend questions without any hesitation. She even offered to find the item at a location closer for my friend too because she was from LA. As we continued to walk around the store, they had a sample and it totally caught my eye. Fresh from their ovens was a pumpkin bread!! They made it right in store and offered me a slice. YES! YUM! DELICIOUS!!! I had to have more!! I noticed what seemed to be the manager helping with the samples too. I think her name was Susan, and we were just discussing how the sample was delicious and their store. I got a another small sample and found where the box was with the help from Tara. She rang us up and man, I am for sure coming back every halloween season to get this pumpkin bread!!! And it's easy to cause it's in a box!!! SO GREAT! read more

We spend way too much time and money here. SLT is the ultimate place for brilliant culinary and kitchen supplies of the finest quality, with prices to match. They really do have everything, and I mean everything, for excellent preparation and cooking , from appliances to stemware. I am writing to warn everyone not to order anything on line at Sur La Table. I ordered a deluxe mixer for the holidays on Dec. 14th. Today is January 4th. I was not provided with a status update regarding my order. When I emailed the company they simply replied that the order would be coming and I could not cancel it. I just called the company (January 4th) and was informed that they had to reorder the item since they had run out and their reorder was not arriving until January 11th. That is not the delivery date to me and may still be weeks away. BUT STILL I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO CANCEL THE ORDER EVEN THOUGH THEY DID NOT HAVE THE ITEM. I was not allowed to speak with a manager. i REMAINED POLITE THROUGH THE WHOLE CALL. The service via email and phone call was unpleasant and rude. This company does not deserve to be in the delivery business. read more

Very poor customer service today, only two employees working. I waited thirty mins to check out. Not enough help

Seriously took 10 minutes for a snotty blond lady to say it would take a day to have a knife sharpened. "Cant you see we are busy". Apparently they are too busy tying bows on packages. How about we will be with you in a moment? Or some other acknowledgement? Wont be back. I guess customer service is not a priority which seems to be a consistent theme at this location. I would rather drive to William's Sonoma where there is customer service. BTW...this would be zero stars if possible. read more

I was disappointed in the lack of instruction. I was extremely frustrated when I found out we were going to be sharing cutting boards, stove range and ingredients. We had 8 students in a class set up for 14, so this made no sense. We paid $85 for a class to watch the chief make most if the food. He started the class by saying they didn't have enough time to cook everything. (Isn't that a clue) I could have done the same thing in my own home with You Tube... Sorry to have such a terrible review. We were given a gift certificate by a wonderful lady in our class. We decided to use it to take another class and give Sur la table another chance. I really hope to come back with a better review. read more

I walked into a nearly empty store a little past opening. A woman was busy tending the espresso machines, made eye contact with me and went back to work with no acknowledgment. I spent the next 25 MINUTES browsing without a salesperson making any contact with me. Worse than Best Buy ::) read more

This review is for the cooking classes that they offer: I've been to Sur La Table (or as I pronounce it, Shirley Table) quite a few times since moving to north county a few years ago and I love playing with all the cooking toys they have. There's ton of gadgets that you don't need but want to buy anyway. I got the wife a cooking class here for Xmas and we really enjoyed it. The chef and her helpers (soux chefs?) were on it. This was a well oiled machine. All the things we needed to cook the dishes were perfectly measured and placed on a tray in front of us. You usually cook in teams of four but we had a single cooking with us, so we got to do a little more than usual. It was fun! Our class was the Thai food cooking class. We made four dishes: Perfect Pad Thai, Chicken Coconut Green Curry, Green Papaya Salad, and Spicy Shrimp Simmered in Basil. The Pad Thai was named appropriately. It was delicious. I was actually a little sad that we made this dish first as it was the best of all of them. Everything else was kind of a letdown. Not because the others were bad, but because this was so good. The chicken curry was also pretty damn tasty. It was interesting to see that there were a LOT of people that didn't like the green papaya salad. It was really fishy. I'm not sure if someone measured incorrectly or if that was the desired flavor but it wasn't good. We finished with the spicy basil shrimp. That was pretty tasty as well. They even had coffee and espresso available from the fancy machines they sell in the store. The two that the wife and I shared were nummy! The experience was really fun. Everyone that worked there was on point and made the process really interesting. You get the recipes and some information on where to get the ingredients so you can make everything at home. We haven't tried the dishes out at home yet, but we'll get to it soon. I'm sure they'll be tasty. read more

I feel this store is taking advantage if the law regarding charging for bags. The charge for bags was meant to be for stores that sold food only. THIS IS BAD BUSINESS! I DO NOT LIKE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF!! With the prices they charge compared to William Sonoma, they should be happy to provide their customers with bags!!! read more

If you've got a little extra dough and you're a cooking aficionado then this is the place for you! They've got everything under the sun - allow yourself at least 30 minutes to look around and check everything out! Whether you're looking for high quality cookware, cutlery, baking dishes, or small kitchen electrics they've got what you're looking for. They've got a HUGE selection of spatulas and cooking utensils - just be prepared to pay a little more because their stuff is HIGH QUALITY. They have a cooking school in the back of the store but because its in Carlsbad I didnt get up there often enough to take classes, but would if I lived closer. Sur La Table means on the table. This place is as much about what goes on the table as far as presentation, but also as much about how to prepare and the preparation and actual cooking of food. This place is a great place to get ideas and research for things. Any kitchen buff, chef, cook of every level would love the selection, variety and knowledge of the staff. I actually came here on the recommendation of BBQ's Galore as I was looking for a cooling rack to expand the vertical area on the smoker to add more batches as I make jerky. And guess what they had a 3pack Stackable cooling rack that fits for $15.00. Located in the SE corner of the Forums it's a large location just packed with all kinds of stuff. Anything you'd need to stock you kitchen. Steamers, pots, pans, specialty knives, cooling racks, kitchen appliances. The lay out is alike a cramped bed bath and beyond. Pros: They care about the cooking and the presentation and eating. Friendly staff, Tons of stuff, just loads of items, anything you'd ever want or need, plus they'll order anything you need. Cooking and skills classes monthly. Tons of bakewear. Cons: A tad pricey, very small bar and drink items variety, some of their items were in multiple locations and not centrally located. read more

I went to a cooking class last month with my wife and we were so excited to have a fun date night learning to cook some new things. We were very disappointed when we got there and were told we were sharing a station with another couple. They were very friendly, but the entire time we were having to figure out who would chop what, or mix what. There wasn't enough room for the 4 of us to work. We also had VERY different preferences on the spices. They liked a lot of salt, and we didn't, etc. It's not worth going unless you have your own work space. I felt like I stood around watching everyone else cook instead of cooking with my wife. The food was good, but not worth it. I suggest they add some work stations so that each couple can have their own. read more

Ok inventory and marketplace prices, that is, comparable to Williams Sonoma. They sorely need a brush-up course in customer service. Ok, really.....how have I not been to a Sur La Table before??! If you are someone who likes to cook or bake, you will LOVE this place as much as I do. You could say that it's similar to Williams-Sonoma, except that there's a much better selection of products, and at slightly more affordable prices. What caught my eye this time was all the different knife sets. If you're looking for high-quality knives, this is a good place to get them! The workers are very knowledgeable of their product lines, and are patient in answering all of your questions. There is even a knife block and potatoes, so that you can test out the knives yourself! Of course, I had to peruse the baking section! Specialty cake pans, Silpat, mixes, sprinkles, cute cupcake liners - all would have gone into my shopping basket if not for the fact that I'd have to somehow fit it in my luggage. Sigh. I also spent a good amount of time checking out the cooking tools. They have the "popular/must have" tools displayed near the front of the store - whisks, tongs, spatulas....you name it, they have it, and in almost every size and color imaginable. It's a really, really good thing that I have to fly 2,600+ miles to go here, because if I lived anywhere within driving distance I'd spend all my savings at Sur La Table! read more

What a disappointing experience. I booked a cooking class for a friend's birthday a month ago. That class was canceled day-of with no call or email notification in advance. It took a 30 minute phone call to get a refund for a class that the store canceled. So, we then rescheduled for another class and drove an hour to arrive there 15 mins early. When we entered we realized quickly they had oversold the class. A bad situation could have been handled with kindness/understanding. Instead, the main chef proceeded to tell us that she hadn't prepared enough food and they didn't have time to prepare any additional food. There were two assistants in the room who offered to help but the main chef barked that wasn't an option. Her solution was to order my partner and I to separate and join to make groups of 4-5 sharing one work station. With no room along the counter, this meant we would stand behind the others and watch as they prepared the meal. I've been to classes here before where it's clearly designed for 2 people per work station. I'm 8 months pregnant and explained I wasn't comfortable standing for 2+ hours watching others participate in the class. Not exactly the experience we had signed up for. The chef seemed to go out of her way to be rude and aggressively complained that we were wasting class time trying to come up with another solution. She went as far as to call out the only single woman in the class and suggest she leave in front of the entire class. The manager came in and offered for us to reschedule, no refund/discount provided which just seems inconsiderate given the situation was caused by the store and handled so poorly by the chef. The classes are expensive and the service is such a disappointment. Encinitas has several other cooking class options of better quality and a lower cost - I'd go elsewhere. read more

I have an addiction for cookware and bakeware. Especially bakeware. Since I prefer to indulge and encourage my addiction rather than find salvation in liquid and low protein diets (I'm a BAKER- a self-respecting baker can't do low carb), this place makes me quite happy. Very happy, in fact. Sur la Table is a great place to shop. Admittedly, I tend to end up buying the same thing at places like Bed Bath and Beyond for less (especially with a coupon- score)- but they carry some unusual equipment that's hard to find in a brick and mortar store, so I have ended up dropping some cash here on various occasions. This place tends to have specialty bakeware that you just don't find at other stores (i.e. silicone or regular madelaine pans, Chicago metallic popover pans...) I have ordered more from their mail order department, but it's nice to have an actual shop nearby that I can peruse. If you're looking for high end and specialty bakeware/cookware, this should be one of the places to poke into. The Williams Sonoma store @ UTC has the best customer service ever- but this place is pretty damn close, and I have no complaints. Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma and King Arthur Flour Baker's Catalogue are three awesome shops for gourmet cooks and bakers. WS and SLT have brick and mortar stores in various cities and states. King Arthur has their brick and mortar store in Vermont. One other great resource is Fante's (an online shop). http://fantes.com/ read more
