I came to this location to return a Christmas gift. I have a lot of older La Creuset bakeware and the casserole bakeware that I asked for and was gifted was drastically different in terms of quality. When I tried to return it with the sticker still on and receipt in hand, the employee asked me if I used it. When I said no, she told me it was past the 30-day return policy. Then after I told her that it was a gift and there is an extension on the gift policy around the holidays, she refunded the amount to the original credit card even though I told her it was a gift. I've been shopping with them for years and have taken many classes at their LA locations, but being treated like some sort of scammer is making me look elsewhere. read more

I came here many years ago for a cooking class (with my awesome grams). The class was alright but nothing memorable. I recently stopped by as I was in the area and waiting for Anthropologie to open its doors. SLT seems to have gotten a bit more cluttered than I last remembered. There's just ALOT of stuff inside this shop. Which isn't a bad thing right. It definitely let's an OCD mind like yours truly go crazy with ideas for her kitchen though. They are like a William Sonoma but with a larger in house inventory. There's spices, wine glasses, coffee makers, bbq stuff, etc. There's a small sales inventory in the back of the store so don't forget to look for that. The reason for the write up today is b/c of Toni. She works the espresso machines at this location and took the time to show me a few different models. Plus, she makes a serious cup of joe (see pics). They currently have a $75 club credit when you buy one of the nespresso machines. That's actually a pretty darn good deal. Not sure how long it'll last though. So yeah. This location is nifty. They were having a souffle class later that day and one of the guys even gave me a recipe handout for that class. I booked a cooking class with them for my brother's birthday. They called me with less than two days notice to cancel because they did not sell enough seats. I'm now trying to find another thing for his birthday last minutes they will not honor your cancellation with less than 48 hours notice, but they are happy to cancel on you. I've purchased several classes from them in the past and am now very disappointed. Also, my money has not been refunded for this expensive class. During our move, the coffee maker didn't get packed. If you love coffee as much as I do, you know what a crisis this can become. And as much as I like my local cafe, I declare this a.... COFFEE EMERGENCY. We needed a new coffee maker stat! We dropped in on this location of Sur La Table as a family on a mission. Trish sprang into action and was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, providing information on my top two contenders. Her wonderful customer service, warm personality and cheery disposition were just the icing on the cake while sending us home with our new machine. It's locked and loaded (grounds and water ready to go). I'm ready to roll out of bed in my jammies tomorrow morning and enjoy a cup of coffee like this hiccup never happened. I am writing to warn everyone not to order anything on line at Sur La Table. I ordered a deluxe mixer for the holidays on Dec. 14th. Today is January 4th. I was not provided with a status update regarding my order. When I emailed the company they simply replied that the order would be coming and I could not cancel it. I just called the company (January 4th) and was informed that they had to reorder the item since they had run out and their reorder was not arriving until January 11th. That is not the delivery date to me and may still be weeks away. BUT STILL I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO CANCEL THE ORDER EVEN THOUGH THEY DID NOT HAVE THE ITEM. I was not allowed to speak with a manager. i REMAINED POLITE THROUGH THE WHOLE CALL. The service via email and phone call was unpleasant and rude. This place is amazing! They have everything a cook/baker would need. A person can literally spend hours in the store looking through all the cool baking "thingamajigs." If you want to make Madeline's, they have the Madeline pan just for it. They have a wide selection of sizes, colors, and material. If you no longer want to use the traditional metal pans, they carry the silicone version. For first time visitors you might get lost and feel overwhelmed; Especially if you are looking for one specific item. The employees are very friendly and ready to help. I would say the two ladies I have met know where every single item is and what that item does. What I found pretty interesting was the back of their store. It is a separate area that is used for their cooking/baking classes. They have a variety of different classes each month that is geared for all ages. One of the best shopping retail experiences I've ever had. This store is super fun and awesome to just walk around as well!! I came in here the other day because I wanted to expand my baking carriers and took a look at the cooking section. As I was shopping I was greeted by Toni. She really helped me find the one that would fit my needs and carry the most to my potential. Super helpful. I love it. As I continued to walk around I was just taking a look at the coffee machines with my friend. She's always wanted one and Tara came over to help us out. My friend was asking a lot of different questions... Questions I didn't even think to ask, but Tara was able to answer all of my friend questions without any hesitation. She even offered to find the item at a location closer for my friend too because she was from LA. As we continued to walk around the store, they had a sample and it totally caught my eye. Fresh from their ovens was a pumpkin bread!! They made it right in store and offered me a slice. YES! YUM! DELICIOUS!!! I had to have more!! I noticed what seemed to be the manager helping with the samples too. I think her name was Susan, and we were just discussing how the sample was delicious and their store. I got a another small sample and found where the box was with the help from Tara. She rang us up and man, I am for sure coming back every halloween season to get this pumpkin bread!!! They really do have everything, and I mean everything, for excellent preparation and cooking , from appliances to stemware. I was disappointed in the lack of instruction. I was extremely frustrated when I found out we were going to be sharing cutting boards, stove range and ingredients. We had 8 students in a class set up for 14, so this made no sense. We paid $85 for a class to watch the chief make most if the food. He started the class by saying they didn't have enough time to cook everything. (Isn't that a clue) I could have done the same thing in my own home with You Tube... Sorry to have such a terrible review. We were given a gift certificate by a wonderful lady in our class. We decided to use it to take another class and give Sur la table another chance. I went to a cooking class last month with my wife and we were so excited to have a fun date night learning to cook some new things. We were very disappointed when we got there and were told we were sharing a station with another couple. They were very friendly, but the entire time we were having to figure out who would chop what, or mix what. There wasn't enough room for the 4 of us to work. We also had VERY different preferences on the spices. They liked a lot of salt, and we didn't, etc. It's not worth going unless you have your own work space. I felt like I stood around watching everyone else cook instead of cooking with my wife. The food was good, but not worth it. I suggest they add some work stations so that each couple can have their own. read more

This review is for the cooking classes that they offer: I've been to Sur La Table (or as I pronounce it, Shirley Table) quite a few times since moving to north county a few years ago and I love playing with all the cooking toys they have. There's ton of gadgets that you don't need but want to buy anyway. I got the wife a cooking class here for Xmas and we really enjoyed it. The chef and her helpers (soux chefs?) were on it. This was a well oiled machine. All the things we needed to cook the dishes were perfectly measured and placed on a tray in front of us. You usually cook in teams of four but we had a single cooking with us, so we got to do a little more than usual. It was fun! Our class was the Thai food cooking class. We made four dishes: Perfect Pad Thai, Chicken Coconut Green Curry, Green Papaya Salad, and Spicy Shrimp Simmered in Basil. The Pad Thai was named appropriately. It was delicious. I was actually a little sad that we made this dish first as it was the best of all of them. Everything else was kind of a letdown. Not because the others were bad, but because this was so good. The chicken curry was also pretty damn tasty. It was interesting to see that there were a LOT of people that didn't like the green papaya salad. It was really fishy. I'm not sure if someone measured incorrectly or if that was the desired flavor but it wasn't good. We finished with the spicy basil shrimp. That was pretty tasty as well. They even had coffee and espresso available from the fancy machines they sell in the store. The two that the wife and I shared were nummy! The experience was really fun. Everyone that worked there was on point and made the process really interesting. You get the recipes and some information on where to get the ingredients so you can make everything at home. We haven't tried the dishes out at home yet, but we'll get to it soon. I'm sure they'll be tasty. read more

Sur La Table means on the table. This place is as much about what goes on the table as far as presentation, but also as much about how to prepare and the preparation and actual cooking of food. This place is a great place to get ideas and research for things. Any kitchen buff, chef, cook of every level would love the selection, variety and knowledge of the staff. I actually came here on the recommendation of BBQ's Galore as I was looking for a cooling rack to expand the vertical area on the smoker to add more batches as I make jerky. And guess what they had a 3pack Stackable cooling rack that fits for $15.00. Located in the SE corner of the Forums it's a large location just packed with all kinds of stuff. Anything you'd need to stock you kitchen. Steamers, pots, pans, specialty knives, cooling racks, kitchen appliances. The lay out is alike a cramped bed bath and beyond. Pros: They care about the cooking and the presentation and eating. Friendly staff, Tons of stuff, just loads of items, anything you'd ever want or need, plus they'll order anything you need. Cooking and skills classes monthly. Tons of bakewear. Cons: A tad pricey, very small bar and drink items variety, some of their items were in multiple locations and not centrally located. read more

Heidi was my salesperson but she was much more than that, she was absolutely amazing and provided customer service like I have not received in a very long time. I'm embarrassed to say that originally I considered just shopping online and having the items delivered, but after the fabulous experience I had in store with Heidi, will continue to return in person. What a disappointing experience. I booked a cooking class for a friend's birthday a month ago. That class was canceled day-of with no call or email notification in advance. It took a 30 minute phone call to get a refund for a class that the store canceled. So, we then rescheduled for another class and drove an hour to arrive there 15 mins early. When we entered we realized quickly they had oversold the class. A bad situation could have been handled with kindness/understanding. Instead, the main chef proceeded to tell us that she hadn't prepared enough food and they didn't have time to prepare any additional food. There were two assistants in the room who offered to help but the main chef barked that wasn't an option. Her solution was to order my partner and I to separate and join to make groups of 4-5 sharing one work station. With no room along the counter, this meant we would stand behind the others and watch as they prepared the meal. I've been to classes here before where it's clearly designed for 2 people per work station. I'm 8 months pregnant and explained I wasn't comfortable standing for 2+ hours watching others participate in the class. Not exactly the experience we had signed up for. The chef seemed to go out of her way to be rude and aggressively complained that we were wasting class time trying to come up with another solution. She went as far as to call out the only single woman in the class and suggest she leave in front of the entire class. The manager came in and offered for us to reschedule, no refund/discount provided which just seems inconsiderate given the situation was caused by the store and handled so poorly by the chef. The classes are expensive and the service is such a disappointment. Encinitas has several other cooking class options of better quality and a lower cost - I'd go elsewhere. read more

Cooking class with Michelle was a blast! The food we made was incredible - dishes that could also be created at home, nothing too complicated, but it was delicious! The crew was awesome and kept things rolling with all of our dishes and tools, and made sure we were always ready for the next step. She didn't say there was anything wrong with our return but was hostile while processing our items. She topped off our experience with Sur La Table by tossing both my card and bag of our purchases at me. My husband and I were both startled and blown away by her animosity. I always love stopping in Sur La Table. I especially love coming here for gifts because I can always find fun, unique things. I've gotten lots of grilling type items for my dad and father-in-law, coffee and cocktail gadgets for my husband, and I love all the cute aprons and patterns they carry. Sur La Table also carries Nespresso machines, which I highly recommend. I came in because I was having problems with my Nespresso running, and Patti from Nespresso was very helpful and took care of me. She was an absolute pleasure. Ok, really.....how have I not been to a Sur La Table before??! If you are someone who likes to cook or bake, you will LOVE this place as much as I do. You could say that it's similar to Williams-Sonoma, except that there's a much better selection of products, and at slightly more affordable prices. What caught my eye this time was all the different knife sets. If you're looking for high-quality knives, this is a good place to get them! The workers are very knowledgeable of their product lines, and are patient in answering all of your questions. There is even a knife block and potatoes, so that you can test out the knives yourself! Of course, I had to peruse the baking section! Specialty cake pans, Silpat, mixes, sprinkles, cute cupcake liners - all would have gone into my shopping basket if not for the fact that I'd have to somehow fit it in my luggage. Sigh. I also spent a good amount of time checking out the cooking tools. They have the "popular/must have" tools displayed near the front of the store - whisks, tongs, spatulas....you name it, they have it, and in almost every size and color imaginable. It's a really, really good thing that I have to fly 2,600+ miles to go here, because if I lived anywhere within driving distance I'd spend all my savings at Sur La Table! read more

Fun shop to browse and they run excellent clearance sales. You can find just about anything in this well stocked kitchen store. Their sales are wonderful. They also keep a clearance section year round in the back of the store. WE bought beautiful: butter servers, candle votives and countertop utensil jugs here last week at a 75% clearance sale. Their staff is knowledgeable, helpful and nice. They offer cooking classes in a very clean and well appointed teaching kitchen in the rear of this store. I'm working Lon my sister and our daughters to convince them to take a class with me. Free parking right out front but the best place to park is in back. Less cruising parking traffic. read more

I have an addiction for cookware and bakeware. Especially bakeware. Since I prefer to indulge and encourage my addiction rather than find salvation in liquid and low protein diets (I'm a BAKER- a self-respecting baker can't do low carb), this place makes me quite happy. Very happy, in fact. Sur la Table is a great place to shop. Admittedly, I tend to end up buying the same thing at places like Bed Bath and Beyond for less (especially with a coupon- score)- but they carry some unusual equipment that's hard to find in a brick and mortar store, so I have ended up dropping some cash here on various occasions. This place tends to have specialty bakeware that you just don't find at other stores (i.e. silicone or regular madelaine pans, Chicago metallic popover pans...) I have ordered more from their mail order department, but it's nice to have an actual shop nearby that I can peruse. If you're looking for high end and specialty bakeware/cookware, this should be one of the places to poke into. The Williams Sonoma store @ UTC has the best customer service ever- but this place is pretty damn close, and I have no complaints. Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma and King Arthur Flour Baker's Catalogue are three awesome shops for gourmet cooks and bakers. WS and SLT have brick and mortar stores in various cities and states. I took a cooking class this morning with Nikki and Anne. I enjoyed every minute of it and learned quite a bit. I can now make homemade pasta with confidence and I don't think I will ever buy pasta in a box again. I also discovered new must have kitchen gadgets that I'm excited to start using! Sur le Table is a chef's paradise. There are tons of high-end cookware and if you're not a culinary artist, you'll want to become one with all the goodies they have in stock. The staff is helpful too. They're more than willing to help answer questions and point you in the right direction. I've seen them hold cooking classes too, they're the whole package. It is interesting to me after reading the nurmerous postings about rude sales staff, that I was turned down at Christmas time in my application for extra Christmas help. After making numerous return calls, I was finally contacted by email that I did not have the right kind of sales experience for their business. I have 15 years of sales experience and have always given excellent customer service. You cannot apply in person, you HAVE to apply online only. I think management should take a second look at how the operations are being run. I was seriously considering taking a cooking class there, but after my own experience, and the numerous negative postings, I will give much thought before spending big $$ on a cooking class at a business that has issues with staff and how they are being managed. read more

Cooking class is worth 3 stars only, just okay, store itself is worth 5 stars. Overall, 4 stars it is. Store: I'm so glad to find a kitchen supplies store that sell nice, quality kitchen gadgets and branded cooking tools and dining ware for a reasonable price! I was going to shop on Amazon until I see how they have good discounts with decent prices that are not marked up like William Sonoma! I didn't know about Sur La Table before my friend got me a gift card here for my birthday. I always thought the only places to get nice kitchen stuff were William Sonoma, crate and barrel and the department stores. The store front is pretty big with a lot of selections. Staff were pretty friendly and efficient. I was introduced to a garlic peeler at the cooking class and I immediately bought one after the class ended because it's truly magical! Cooking class: It's alright. The class size is pretty big, about 16 people, one chef who teaches, one helper, and a few for the cleaning crew. Don't expect to get much individual hands-on experience otherwise you'll be disappointed. Four people cook 3 dishes together so you can imagine how it'll go. What I really did was just slicing a tomato, stirring stuff, serving stuff and pouring stuff. I was at the grill for maybe 1 minute because why would you need 4 people to cook at one burner? I had the French country cooking class and honestly I don't remember much about the procedures because I didn't get to do everything myself. If your group mates are not fun, then your experience would probably be mediocre. I also notice the age of the whole group on a Sunday evening is above 40, so if you want a younger crowd, maybe this is not a good place. It's not surprising though. I don't see why a young person would pay $70 for a 2-hour cooking class. When you think about it, it's something for an established or retired person with money to do. It's like when you look inside a jaguar, you'll rarely see a person in his/her 20s or 30s driving it. Certain activities just attract a certain age group I suppose. I went because it's a gift and of course I'm going to check it out. I did learn something though. I asked the chef for some cooking tips which is handy. I like the store, but I'd say skip the cooking classes. read more
