Fantastic service! My front door lock broke and they researched it and discovered a lifetime warranty! So they gave me a new one on faith that I would bring back the old one, which I promptly did the next day and I have a brand new front door lock with an upgraded mechanism! So kind! This place is great, they saved me so much money! My beautiful Emtek entry door handle broke for the second time and I came in to Berger Hardware to shop for a new handle set; I brought my old handle with me and Dorothy suggested they try to fix it instead of replacing it. Unfortunately it couldn't be repaired but she contacted Emtek and was able to get a replacement handle for me! Dorothy was so knowledgeable and helpful I couldn't be more pleased!! Take note it's hard to locate; if you find the flooring store you are in the right place; I guess the City of Encinitas is making signage hard to get. read more

I am doing a kitchen remodel, and I wanted to find the right retro knobs and pulls to go with the new cabinets. After finding the general brand and style that I liked, I was referred by the site (Water Street Brass) to Berger Hardware as a local retailer. This allowed me to take a sample cabinet front to the store and see what the hardware would look like on the door, including picking the best finish (chrome over polished nickel in my case). The person who helped me (Kathy) couldn't have been nicer, the prices were in line if not better than what I found on the Internet, and it's really cool to be in a store that's been there since 1912. Most of us are aware of San Diego Hardware, but I also recommend checking out Berger Hardware the next time that you need quality hardware for a special home project. read more

We came here hoping to educate ourselves on cabinet hardware we were shopping for which have not yet been installed. We were greeted by, and received help from Kathleen, who was very friendly, knowledgeable, and really did her best to inform us of the cabinet handles we might like, differences with different materials used, color & style, sizes, prices, etc. Kathleen kindly emailed us pricing on the type of hardware we were interested in. She also provided information re: a custom door vendor which we showed interest in, who had sample doors on display in their showroom. They have plenty of brands and styles of cabinets, hardware, door knobs/locks/electronic keypads, mailboxes, etc. Their display showroom was very organized and clean. They allowed our medium sized dog to shop with us. And the staff all exercised safe social distancing the entire time. Kathleen really made it a point to answer all our questions, concerns, and offered very helpful suggestions to us which we never thought about prior to our visit. We have a few more places to visit and check out, but we did see a style we really liked, so it's very possible we ultimately select our cabinet hardware from Berger. read more

Wife & I completed a total home remodel overseen by Marrokal Design & Remodeling (separate review). At every step of the way I was impressed with Marrokal's recommended suppliers and specialized contractors. Every recommended supplier was top notch! Berger Hardware was Marrokal's recommended source for exterior and interior hardware. Just stepping into Berger Hardware and meeting Eric immediately put us at ease. Eric has extensive product knowledge and works with customers to find the right fit. I was relieved to discover at Berger there is no hard sell tactics. Wife & I could wander the store and ask questions as needed. If we needed time to review products before deciding, we could leave with product catalogs and take as much time as desired. We could then return and see Eric with follow-up questions before placing an order. We placed half a dozen separate hardware orders at Berger totaling around $2,500. Wife & I were very happy with our visits to Berger Hardware and love every product received. Visitors to our home will comment, "I love these handles!". Final note. During remodel process wife and I also visited San Diego Hardware (separate review). I'll give San Diego Hardware credit for being a large store with extensive product displays. But in some ways, it felt sterile as we took a number and waited for a random staff member to help us. In contrast, we always looked forward to our visits with Eric at Berger Hardware as friendly, personalized and productive! read more

Had to replace a front door handle and an inactive front door handle. Eric was very helpful through the entire process, from figuring out what I needed, to determining the options that were available to me, to placing the order. He responded to my emails in a very timely manner. When I picked up at the store, Kathy was there to help me out. She was very kind and helpful, too. She checked the boxes to make sure everything was as ordered and made sure I had enough spare keys for the new lock set. She even briefed me on installation. They know their business, and their business is door hardware...not only did they call around to get a replacement rim cylinder lock for a surface mount 1970s retro National Lock, they had it here in 1 day, re-keyed it to my new kw1 lockets. I walk past this place every day - and based on the reviews, you'd think this would be an awesome little hardware joint - but I'd use the word 'Aloof'. I was looking for kitchen cabinets and was greeted by a lady and gentleman who said,"Hello" - and as soon as another customer entered, they both focused their attention on that individual - while I was in mid-sentence. It was a little weird - and I should have turned around and left. Turns out that their cabinet expert just left so they put me in contact with their new designer.....in Encinitas. She didn't seem too keen on supporting the North Park area (coming out for measurements, etc.). Long story short: these guys are literally down the block from me. I was going to try the 'Support the Local Business' thing, but these guys can't get the customer service thing down right. Folks walking into your store are going to spend thousands of dollars for well-made cabinets -- and you can't even greet properly? Maybe it was just a bad experience, but like I said, I walk past this store every day. It was a disappointment. read more

WE LOVE THIS PLACE. Nothing fancy, but they know their stuff. We had a long list of items to get for our remodel. We had a ton of questions. Cheryl took her time, gave us a ton of options and answered MANY questions. The prices are HALF THE PRICE OF SAN DIEGO HARDWARE. We found doorknobs, drawer pulls, door stops, everything a 1920's house needs to have replaced at some point in time. the store front signage is on 30th street, but you enter the building through the alley. read more

As both a general contractor and finish carpentry contractor (37 years experience and I'm still hanging doors myself), I appreciate a place that has not only a wide selection but a selection of the odd and difficult to find items. The people are very friendly (including the old cat that has been there as long as I have been patronizing the store) and, perhaps even more importantly, very knowledgeable. But let's admit it, what is most important to the majority of clients is the pricing, and they beat Dixieline and Home Depot without breaking a sweat, and that's with a selection ranging from the cheap and inexpensive to the highest quality lines. Over the years, I've been to some great supply houses with great selections and prices but sometimes I see the occasional homeowner ill-treated or ignored. That won't happen here. I've noticed homeowners and other people not in the trades treated with the same care and respect as a large builder, though Berger does specialize in selling to the trades. I can recommend Berger without reservation. read more

I had been a customer for many years. The true test of a Buisness is how issues get resolved when things don't go as planned. I purchase flooring from Eric through Urban Flooring. The flooring arrived over 4 weeks late. I was promised a $500 dollar credit of which I didn't see a dime of. After having the low quality flooring installed by a qualified installer, the floors started to buckle in front of the windows. I contacted Eric and he told me "I didn't understand flooring as well as you". He made it clear he wouldn't get involved in this issue. The price to replace the defective flooring was 10k. In the future I will shop at stores that stand behind the products they sell and the customers who support them. read more

Excellent customer service and good prices! So I did an experiment where I went to San Diego Hardware and purchased some door knobs first. Then I went to Berger Hardware to purchase those same door knobs. Berger prices came in several dollars cheaper and they provided excellent customer service. The Berger sales person went out of their way to assist me and even offered to key my front door knob for me so it would match my existing one. When I went to San Diego Hardware, they were very busy and I felt a bit rushed when asking for assistance. I will definitely be back in the future. Note that they are going through a remodel right now so the showroom is not in that great of shape, but they still had a nice selection of products and like I mentioned before they've got better prices. read more
