For our annual friends' birthday get-together, we decided to mix things up this year and trade our usual dinner reservation for a cooking class at Sur La Table. Since the San Diego location had closed, we headed up to Carlsbad--which already felt like part of the adventure. After all, nothing says "celebration" quite like putting a group of friends in a kitchen with sharp knives, hot burners, and just enough confidence to be dangerous. From the start, the class had a great energy. It was fun, interactive, and just the right amount of organized chaos. We were all assigned tasks, trying to follow directions while also catching up and laughing along the way. At times, it felt more like a lively kitchen full of friends than a structured class, which added to the fun. We also ended up sharing our cooking station with a really great family, which turned out to be a highlight. It added to the experience having more people to laugh with, compare notes, and occasionally look at for reassurance when something didn't seem quite right. There's something about bonding over butter, timing, and "is this done yet?" that brings people together pretty quickly. The menu itself was good: rosemary chicken, risotto, a fresh salad with homemade dressing, and a strawberry custard for dessert. And I have to admit--the risotto was my personal favorite of the night. With all the stirring, multitasking, and conversation happening, I was fully expecting it to go sideways. Instead, it came out perfect, which felt like winning a small but meaningful award. I may never make it that well again, but for one night, I'll take it. If there was one challenge, it was that the class size felt a little large for just one chef. There were moments where it felt like culinary traffic--people waiting for guidance, timing overlapping, and a bit of "are we supposed to be doing this now?" But to the chef's credit, they kept things moving and somehow brought it all together in the end. By the time we stood standing to eat , it was one of those moments where you look around and think, "We actually made this." The food was genuinely good, the experience was memorable, and the laughs along the way made it even better. All in all, it was a fun, slightly chaotic, and very successful way to celebrate. It's not every day you get to cook a full meal with friends, meet new people, and walk away feeling like a semi-professional chef (or at least convincing yourself you are). We'd absolutely do it again--if only to see if we can repeat our unexpected success. read more

I had to take a moment to recognize the incredible experience we had at Sur La Table thanks to District Manager Tina and her amazing team. We originally came in just to pick up a couple of spatulas, but the level of service completely transformed our visit. Tina runs an exceptional operation, and it truly shows. Samantha and Mark went above and beyond to take care of us, offering thoughtful recommendations, answering all our questions, and making the entire experience feel personalized and fun. Because of their expertise and genuine care, we ended up leaving with an air fryer oven, indoor grill, Le Creuset pots, and a few other must-haves we didn't even know we needed. This is what outstanding customer service looks like. We shop here often for homeware, but this visit really stood out. Contrary to the other reviews, the cooking class we took was terribly overpriced and underwhelming. We chose the dim sum class expecting to learn something new- instead we got given a few ingredients in little cups to mix together and 4 or 5 things to chop. You're in teams of 4 so one person may chop green onion (zero instruction other than "chop that up and throw it in" and one person may mix the premeasured ingredients- an adult class where one adult is expected to just operate a spoon. Not even a quick tip on knife skills even when asked, just 'looks like you're doing okay'. We "made" 2 kinds of dumplings and 1 kind of bao bun, but learned almost nothing. When asking the instructor how to 'pleat' the dumpling, she said she wasn't quite sure but to do our best. She didn't know what several of the ingredients really were and told us just to mix everything on the tray together and it'd be okay. For the bao buns, the dough was premade and the pork was premade- we literally just rolled a little ball and folded the pork in, with zero discussion or knowledge on anything else about the process. We expected it to be an hour and a half long class, was actually about 70 minutes with 20 of those minutes being a "break" to go shop around the store. There's more education and entertainment value in a Costco knife showcase. This was the most watered down and least effort they could have possibly put into a 'class'. For $100 person, you can easily find more entertainment or education. read more

Love taking cooking classes from here. I think I have taken like 15 or so in the past year and half. And forgot to leave a review. I remembered to upload the pictures but left out the most important part. LOL The chef's, kitchen assistants, and all staff are welcoming, attentive and they want us all to have a great time and cook more foods from scratch at home. My mother was gifted some cooking classes here and we signed up together and had a fantastic experience each time. The signup process is easy online and they have plenty of options to choose from at all times of the day, almost every day! We chose three different dinner meals and each were creative and unique. The chefs and staff are so professional, knowledgeable, and each bring different skills to the classes. They break things down to an absolute beginner level so that it is accessible to all, even with absolutely no cooking or kitchen skills. I think the most helpful part of the classes were learning techniques to prep the different elements of the meal, and the reasoning behind the plating as well. Due to time constraints, a lot of the more mundane prep is done for you (measuring, etc.) so you don't exactly cook the entire meal yourself. Depending on how full the class is (up to 16 people), you'll work in teams with other participants. You get to keep a copy of the recipe as well. They also provide a short break about half way through the class where you can shop the store for 10% off. After, you get to eat and there are usually leftovers and they provide to-go boxes to take them home. I want to give this more stars because I like the idea, but too many let downs. Our chef wasn't familiar with the recipe. Read it on the spot. Very odd as she didn't understand the recipe half the time and asked our opinions. Claimed we should never adjust the recipe, but then she did so several times. 2 of the 3 cooking classes I have booked at this location have been cancelled within short notice. They did refund to my credit card quickly. However, when I emailed to store to ask if there was another class of the same kind available or if they would reschedule the class, I received no response. The one cooking class I did attend was good and I learned some nice techniques. We did run out of time at the end so we were rushed to finish and needed to leave so they could prepare for the next class. The recipes were not printed for us, we were told they would be sent via email. We ended up having to email the store several days later to remind them to send them. read more

I called at 12:00pm today and asked the male shift lead to please put an item aside for me, and I would be there that evening before close to pick it up and pay for it. I had time this afternoon and decided to head up to the store (arrived at about 2:20) and waited in the understandably busy holiday line for 15 minutes. As I got to the counter and asked for my item, the nice sales associate went to the back to check for me. When she arrived back to the floor empty handed I was worried. I then saw a different sales associate place the item on the counter. The cashier that was helping me said the male shift lead almost just sold my item (the last one now) to someone else. Luckily I was able to come pick up my item early or I wouldn't have had the item I was promised held for me. I was extremely disappointed in the lack of professionalism and courtesy from the male shift lead. Making a quick sale isn't more important than honoring your word. It doesn't just affect how the customer looks at you as an associate, but the organization as a whole. read more

The Cooking Classes at Sur La Table are one of the most fun and unique experiences. I surprised my wife with a "Date Night" cooking lesson. On our night, the menu was a Tuscan-themed dinner. Our class was scheduled to start at 7pm. Promptly at 7pm the staff greeted us, and brought us into the kitchen. We were given brief instructions on what to expect through the night, we washed up and were ready to go. The kitchen is set up with a huge center island. And everyone stands along the parameters of that island. There are a total of 4 stations and each station has 4 people. This is your team and you all work together to prepare your meal with your chef. On this night, our Chef was Chef Chuck. There were 2 other helpers (Kelly & Joan) in the kitchen with him as well. All of them were fantastic, and funny and helped to keep a fun atmosphere. Chef Chuck was great. He was very patient with our group and offered so many good tips and pointers for cooking in the kitchen. It's also fun because as you are cooking, they will take the dirty dishes and wash them!!! That never happens at home! At the beginning of the class, they take your order for a sample coffee or expresso. The helper mentioned that the machine they use to make the drinks cost more than her first car. With that, she explained that the coffee it makes is amazing. My wife had one, and she agreed. Myself, I just enjoyed the water they provided for us. The entire cooking class experience is about 2 hours depending on the group. About halfway through, you do get a break. This is a 10 to 15 minute break for you to cruise around the store. You do get 10% off your purchase when you are taking a class, which was a great offer. After your break, you return to the kitchen where you finish up the final steps of the cooking process. You then plate your dinner and enjoy! There are so many classes to select from, something for everyone. Working with another couple can be awkward, just keep that in mind. We worked with a younger couple that was very nice. It's a different experience if you are in a bigger group. Also, keep in mind, you will be standing the entire time. There is no place to sit. Overall, great experience. A little pricey at $99 per person. But for a special occasion, it was worth it. read more

The Breville warranty states: "California law also provides that for any warranty service for a product, California residents have the option of of returning the the product to the retailer from which it was originally purchased." Haven't bought anything from this store in years but ordered some holiday gifts online. When I received it the order was missing items. I called customer service and they were no help. I called the Carlsbad store which prepped the order, but no one ever picked up. I got one of those escalated customer service ticket/emails. So far no word and no refund on items I paid for but never received. Mistakes happen (especially during busy holiday shopping times), I understand. KITCHEN NEEDS Excited there are few Sur La Tables still existing. This location seems to be larger with more items in inventory than the one in SD and La Jolla. Lucky me. Been searching for a quality Tortilla Press and so many on the market have meh to terrible reviews. Then I saw this one while researching and saw in the entire San Diego county, Carlsbad, had it in inventory. I was able to secure a Cast Iron Tortilla Press for $40. For those that know me, I am about quality regardless of the expense. Spending time at home and having themed dinners has been the thing amongst us and I love the best meals my hands can make. I can now be prepared for those "Taco Tuesdays" (such a big thing in SD) at the comfort of my own kitchen - thanks Sur La Table for always providing me kitchen vibe goodness. This review is regarding Teen Cooking Classes at Sur La Table in The Forum Carlsbad. Last week my daughter was registered in Teen Cooking Classes.... 5 days, 2 hours per day, $350 total (so $70 for each 2 hour class). One of the days the instructor pre-made the bread and lemonade, so the only thing the students did was assemble sandwiches.... for a steep cost of $70! The final day the class was cancelled 1-1/2 hours before it started because the instructor had an emergency and there was no backup instructor. This was VERY disappointing to my daughter and her friend because the prior day they spent 2 hours making dough, then were unable to make the pastries in the final day -- so this "2 part class" was only half fulfilled. Also my daughter's friend (who was also registered for this class) her parents never got a phone call about canceling the class, so they only reason they knew about the cancellation is because I told them. How does Sur La Table not have a backup instructor plan, when they have cooking classes all the time?! And if they are going to charge such a high fee for these classes, there should be a solid plan in place and there should be a lot of value in the classes (not just assembling sandwiches). I host many event for clients and Took them to a cooking class yesterday at this location. I came early to set up but upon entry I quickly noticed I had no work to do because everything was coordinated beautifully with a charcuterie board, plates, ice buckets for our wine to be chilled and water pitchers with lemon. We were a group of 20 people and we are not a quiet so it's tough job to keep our attention but the Chef did a great job guiding us through and really teaching us unforgettable cooking tips. I also need to comment on the store manager Simona, she came in to check on us throughout our class and the store itself is very clean and the cooking area clean was ambient. I would be happy to bring my clients here again. read more

Attended a cooking class at the Fashion Valley location recently to celebrate 3 birthdays. Quick note, our original class at Carlsbad was cancelled by the store. We were bumped due to a larger private party. For our class, we arrived about 10-15 mins late due to traffic and parking issues. We were greeted in the kitchen by a scowling "Chef Yapo" whose first words to us were that we were lucky he didn't cancel the class since we were late. We had seven in our party and there was one other couple in the class. When we apologized to them, they said they had just arrived as well. Next Chef Yapo asked if we had brought wine and we had since we were told it was fine. He basically yelled that we would need to leave it outside since this wasn't a private party eventhough we were 7/9 in attendance. No problem, we apologized and took our spots. One of the first things Chef Yapo told us was that he had an injury 25 years ago and if it seems like he is yelling at us during class, it's really that he can't control his tone. Certainly a sad story but not a great sign for the start of a "fun" birthday evening. Within a few minutes, Chef Yapo dug in on one of our friends and basically belittled him in front of the class for getting egg shell in the bowl while seperating the yolks for a tart dough. A few minutes later, he went after my wife for not slicing the garlic the way he wanted. He wouldn't let it go and kept trying to make her use her knife the way he instructed. My wife is a very good cook and knows how to slice garlic. After a few minutes of basically shouting at her, he announced that he "needed a moment" and went into the corner to (I guess) collect himself? At this point, my sister left and complained to the manager. When she returned he asked if he was in trouble and she told him to quit acting like a jerk. He apologized but it was extremely awkward and uncomfortable from that point on. I've been to a number of cooking classes and they were always informative and most of all, fun. This was the opposite. Tense, awkward and creepy. The rest of the class was basically an awkward race to get it done and get out of there. We finished around 930PM and only then were we able to eat. Side note, we were never offered water or really anything to make us more comfortable. So to recap, we stood around for over 2 hours getting basically lectured like children, then were rushed to eat in a hurry before the store closed. While we quickly ate, Ched Yapo touted his media appearances and pitched us on his book, his catering and private party services. Completely tone deaf as I can't imagine allowing him into my home. Chef Yapo can certainly cook but needs to keep his Yap O closed. He treated paying guests on their special night like insolent children. The entire evening was like being trapped in a Curb Your Enthusiasm skit. I'm only adding a star because the food did turn out well. read more

They don't even send you an email reminder I tried calling 3 times to confirm date- ridiculous long hold times. Finally, missed the class then told "tough". Never again. I've watched Massimo Bottura's documentary on Chef's Table close to a dozen times, so when I saw that Sur La Table was offering a Pasta class I signed up hoping to roll out my own pasta. The location closest to me was at the Forum, and parking can be terrible but less so on Sunday compared to Saturday. This was my first cooking class and I didn't know what to expect. I brought closed toed shoes but nobody stopped those in the class who were wearing sandals. We were invited to nip at the pesto & cream cheese dip on each table, given lemon-infused water and ordered to wash our hands. Groups were pre-arranged, ingredients were pre-measured and the chef gave a quick overview of what we were to be doing in the 2 hour class. We first started with making the pasta dough, going through the motions of mixing wet and dry ingredients and playing with the kitchenaid mixer and the puree machine. Then we prepared the ingredients that needed cutting, peeling or mincing (shallots, garlic, mint, basil, shrimp). Lastly we rolled out our pasta using either the pasta maker or the add-on with the kitchenaid, and cut the pasta with the machines or with a knife (pappardelle). I cut super fat slices but was somewhat pleased with myself since the other groups were not as adventurous and preferred to make 'definitely-will-taste-good" pastas with the machines. We took turns cooking, cutting, sautéing, grating and doing whatever needed to be done to get our pasta dishes done and delicious. In terms of the shop itself, it was organized and tidy and every cook's playground. I am a fan of buying cutting boards and had to buy a big ole epicurean cutting board (we had cut on these boards during class) that was surprisingly cheaper than what it would be at bed, bath and beyond. It sounded like most people in this class had taken cooking classes before or were already well versed in the kitchen and overall I enjoyed the class and the group I was cooking with. read more

In the past I have taken multiple cooking classes at this location, which were all excellent. Last week I gifted my friends with a Thai cooking class: it was an absolutely horrifying and embarrassing experience. The "chef" was an amateur cook lady as boring and non engaging as one can be. She would not answer any questions because she had no answers or knowledge past the ability of reading the recipes provided by Sur-la-table. She decided to cook the sauce of the main dish, the Pad Thai, by herself "to speed up things" while blabbering or reading the Sur-la-Table recipes aloud. I wonder if all she cared was to sprint home as fast as possible (lesson was less than 1.5 hours including break while they normally run 2 or more). Extremely disorganized, no comments, no suggestions, no explanations (except some tips she said she found on youtube were she went to see how to cook Thai) The result was a disgusting sugar/vinegar soup that was supposed to be Pad Thai. We left it all there untouched and kept silent when she asked if we liked it but she could not care less. As a cook I always appreciate honest feedback, especially if what I cook is left intact on the plate... We almost left in the middle of the lesson. It was so unbearably boring and useless. My friends stayed just to be polite as they felt bad I spent a good amount of money to learn less than if we also watched some Thai recipes on youtube ... for free! We then cooked some shrimps and the "chef" had no clue how to set the temperature on the induction cooktops or how to know if the shrimps were ready or not. People would ask questions and she would simply not answer and turn pretending to be busy moving stuff around without any purpose. The rice we were supposed to cook was also already prepared by her in advance so "it would be faster". We paid for a cooking class, duh! we wanted and were supposed to learn how to cook it, if I we wanted prepared food we could have easily ordered it at a restaurant!!! What I am mostly upset is that I wanted to give my friends a memorable gift and a great experience, but the only memorable thing is how terrible it was. This was my 3rd time taking a cooking class at Sur La Table but my first time at the Carlsbad location. The other 2 times were at Newport Beach (on Avocado Ave with Chef Angel) and had great experiences due to the instructor providing clear instructions and demonstrating "how to" skills and tips. Newport location had a camera (over the instructor) and large TV screen where we had an up close look) Carlsbad location did not have this. We could barely hear the instructor whenever the fan went on and she couldn't hear me when I asked questions. One of the other participants went around and helped us. The cooking class was for Thai food and when the instructor demonstrated how to wrap the dumplings, she demonstrated on round shaped wraps but we were given square shaped wraps. We couldn't really follow along. By this time I gave up asking questions since she couldn't hear me unless I walked up to the front and asked her. I was pretty disappointed as I was celebrating my friend's milestone birthday. read more

The cooking classes are highly overrated and overpriced. You pay around $100 per participant, but when you go in a group, if one group has three people, they pay $300 for their ingredients, and a group of five pays $500 for the exact same amount of ingredients (about $20 worth of food.) They workspace is very cramped, and the whole time the instructor chef is talking, other employees are clanging pots and pans getting ready for the next group. Unfortunately, the end product, that you get to consume, is way below what would be considered good in a mediocre restaurant. All I could think of was the delicious meal I could have eaten for $500 in a restaurant. Eventually you get rushed through because the next group is coming in. They need instructions in how to cook good food, and how to actually teach cooking. Sur la Table is closing stores around the country. Hmmm. read more

I don't recommend the cooking classes especially anything to do with raw fish. Me and my partner were gifted a cooking class here over the weekend making sushi and we came with excitement and high expectations. The store itself was very clean and the staff were somewhat friendly, those aiding in the cooking class were extremely helpful and overall happy to be there. But the class itself was a nightmare. The chef teaching the class seemed like she didn't prioritize actually teaching and would rather get the 2 hour session over with, not to mention it seemed the entire kitchen was totally unprepared for how many people were in attendance. We had to share ingredients intended for two people amonst four, as the staff claimed they were short on everything including the sushi rice spoons. Between 4 people we shared a single bowl of rice (which we ran out of and couldn't even finish making the rolls we paid to be there to make ), shared limited ingredients, single knife, what's the point of signing up for cooking classes to learn how to make these things at home if between 4 people we each have an individual job, not to mention the pacing of the class itself felt as if we were being rushed. Everything was explained once and then the class carried on, we were given minimal instructions even with using the knives. Two people in attendance weren't even supposed to be there, they paid for a different class on a different day but showed up anyway. And guess what? When the couple that had actually paid for two seats in this class showed up just shy of 10 minutes late the chef turned them away. Claiming she was already to far along in the class and there just wasn't enough ingredients for the two people that actually paid to be there and not the people that showed up before them. Wish we could have given them our spots instead because I regret taking this class. At one point I actually found myself just standing there upset. Angry. How can a cooking class be so horribly unprepared if most of those in attending paid in advance, ingredients were the cheap stuff from Costco or Ralph's rather than from an actual Asain store. There was no flavor, there was no actual instructions, no connecting between chef and student. Here's the fun part, I believe I now have a mild case of food poisoning. Something was off about the tuna we used to make "spicy tuna hand rolls" it was pale and almost white, not to mention the taste was extremely acidic and tasting it alone without any other ingredients it was bitter. Almost like the cuts we received were unbleed and way to young, I don't know how they defrosted the tuna since the chef didn't actually say but the fish was hardly edible. My partner who actually fishes blue fin even made a comment during the class that something was wrong with the tuna, I didn't think much about it until I was mincing my shared portion of it and noticed it was nearly white and there were nerves in the meat. This was a tail cut, not the soft belly of the tuna. We ended up throwing away our sushi rolls after trying to force ourself to eat them.
