Randomly came across this place on a walking adventure around Somerville one summer and finally came around to trying it out. Grilled veggie omelet was good, not too much egg and filled me up. The home fries were good and not greasy. They did have a novel breakfast menu with the Martin Scorsese theme. We tried the Taxi Driver meal which was french toast with apples and cheddar. It was ok but nothing to write home about. If you like canned apples with syrup, then you might like it. I'd say this is good for the weekend of drinking and I don't feel like spending any more money but don't want to cook breakfast type of situation. It's a less busy breakfast place compared to somewhere like Soundbites and it's an inexpensive meal that comes with very friendly service. read more

We've been on the hunt for a great brunch place since we moved to Somerville a couple of months ago. In our old Noe Valley neighborhood in SF, there were a couple of brunch options - but no one did it better than Chloe's, especially when it came to croissant french toast. So we'd heard that Supreme Kitchen (along with Ball Square Cafe - which was also a dud) could be our new Chloe's, we were anxious to try it out. And today we finally went. First, this place scores low on ambiance (and ventilation), which in theory could be a good thing (we do love our hole-in-the-walls). In this case, though, it's just blah. Second, the service was not so friendly. I mean, ok, we're obviously not regulars so don't feel like you have to try to learn our names or anything. But a smile would be nice. Finally, third - and most importantly - the food really stunk. In the spirit of 4th of July weekend, I ordered one of the holiday weekend specials. Named after one of the founding fathers (I forget which one?!), I chose peach french toast. Remembering my love for this brunch specialty and thinking that it's summer and the peaches right now are delicious, I didn't think I could go wrong. Well, folks, I did. And big time. The french toast was just basic bread, dipped in eggs and fried. Nothing special. I could have overlooked that, however, had it not been for the CANNED PEACHES AND SYRUP poured liberally all over my now soggy and overly-sweetened french toast. Who needs real maple syrup when you've got that peacy goodness that's leftover in the bottom of the can?! To add insult to injury, they added a spiral of redi-whip all over the plate. ICK. I prefer a low key breakfast. I do not need a place that is well decorated or with "ambiance." So this place really fit my idea for breakfast. We had to wait a little bit for a table, but that is expected since it was a small place. I am particular about eggs benedict so I was extremely happy to have probably one of the best eggs benny in awhile. They had several varieties of eggs benny on their menu. I had the eggs benedict plus which is the traditional with spinach. It was delicious. The shredded hash browns were too soft even though I told them I wanted it grilled crunchy. I especially enjoyed the coffee. I did not mind that it was self serve at a coffee station. I actually like that idea because I hate having to wave down the waitress in a busy place to get more coffee. The unfortunate part was that all the cannisters were empty when we went to get coffee, but that meant we had to wait 2 minutes for piping hot fresh coffee. It was worth it! I cannot say much about the other items on the menu since this was my first visit, but I would go back again for breakfast if I am in the area. If you want a no frills, cheap breakfast then this place works well. read more

I came here on a Saturday because I didn't realize Highland Kitchen's brunch was only on Sundays and I really wanted brunch. This place was within walking distance so I thought I'd give it a try. I usually take bad reviews about places with a grain of salt, but it this case they were right. This is truly terrible food. The server was nice enough, but I should have known when the cook "Stan" wearing blue jeans and a long sleeved striped shirt was watching TV when I came in that I was in trouble. I ordered the "Irish" eggs benedict, Irish being for the corn beef hash it was served with. The corn beef hash was barely warm and clearly from a can, the bread was gummy and disgusting and the Hollandaise was thick and overwhelming. The only thing that was good were the poached eggs, but they were overwhelmed by the rest of the bad. Also, the "home fries" were thin slices of dry, overcooked potatoes. I'm not sure why I ate as much as I did other than maybe I felt bad. Do not go here. read more

I went here yesterday, and this location was chosen as a halfway point for us to meet. When reading the reviews I figured it was a good hole in the wall restaurant and worth a shot. I ordered a veggie omelet with no cheese; when the waitress asked if i wanted toast and home fries, I asked her if instead I could have just sliced tomatoes on the side. She responded by telling me they don't do that - but she could order me a side of tomatoes and charge me for it. I would have had no problem with this except when the order came out - the tomatoes were far from fresh and I was given a measly 3 slices. The other guest in my party ordered an omelet and opted for the toast and home-fries; the toast came out and both pieces were from the end on the loaf and stated that the omelet was mediocre at best. They offered self serve coffee which some would think was nice, but when I go to a restaurant I expect to have coffee served to me - hence part of the tip. We also had to get our own water/juice from the cooler which felt more like a to-go service than a sit-down breakfast. When it came time to pay, we were informed that they did not take credit cards - there were no signs of "Cash Only" anywhere so this was a bit of a surprise. We were instructed to use their ATM to pull out cash. Again, this would have not been an issue if we were informed upfront or if signs were posted letting us know. If you aren't a regular at this establishment, you are in for a few unpleasant surprises. I'm not certain when the change in ownership took place, but what happened was that the fellow who owned it couldn't run it anymore by himself and so the new owner bought it and hired him to continue working as long as he was able to. There isn't a large staff, so if one person is unable to come in, it does throw things off a bit. But these people are AWESOME SWEET. The food is FANTASTIC. It does seem a little pricey, but I'm 54, so if I have to spend more than $4 for breakfast I start sounding/feeling like your cranky 90 year old uncle. But in that the first place I rented after high school cost me $250 for a two bedroom and I'm now living in Somerville in a $2,500 two bedroom, I have to acknowledge that inflation exists. The prices are comparable to any other decent breakfast place with good quality food and service (e.g., Sound Bites, Buddy's, etc.). They have some really tasty and unique omelets and plates, they don't have fresh squeezed OJ (which would be nice), but they have both bottled and/or carton. The portions are sizeable. The atmosphere is pleasant, relaxed, and casual. Everything is clean. I usually go when they are not super busy, but I prefer that. Apparently, they do get full/slammed... but I'm not sure which hours or days Because I've gone there about once a week since I discovered it (and I'm kicking myself for passing by it for years with never trying it out ... DOH !!! )... and I view my visits as treats to myself, I try to split the difference between nutritious and decadent... but if I err, I err on the side of decadence. But I don't have to rationalize it to myself long, as I'm usually good for a pillow and a nap once I get back home ... : ) I highly recommend this gem. read more

Great little breakfast spot in Somerville with a nice homey atmosphere! This place is a great find especially considering the insane waits for weekend brunch at other nearby spots in the Ville.The food was good, service attentive and friendly, and prices reasonable. Our breaksfast was not served with has browns but slices of golden potatoes which were amazing! Another standout was the generous portions of meats that you get with the Breakfast Bonanza. Too bad the the bacon was completely overcooked and so crispy that it was not really appetizing or edibile. The rest of the meal - pancakes, eggs, sausage, and eggs benedict were great! Another con was that the $3.25 glass of fresh squeezed OJ did not taste fresh squeezed. Sure, it had a lot of pulp but definitely tasted like it had been in a plastic container. I am pretty picky about OJ, but it just was NOT good. I would definitely go back because other than the bacon and OJ - the food was great. read more

There are usually tables here even at brunchtime, but it's because the food isn't great. Eggs are more or less eggs. I've had pancakes that just weren't very good. I don't order more adventurous items because if you can't make good pancakes it's gonna be downhill from there. Prices are not suited to the lackluster fare, a decent breakfast will run you the same $10 as everywhere else. I try my luck at Supreme sometimes because it's around the corner from my house, but if it was two blocks further I'd never give it a thought. read more

I've been to SK twice and have yet to be disappointed. The picture before you is the Irish eggs bene with shredded homefries. For only $8.95 with unlimited self serve coffee, this guy says "Oh yeah!" The food comes quick, isn't greasy, has some great flavor and leaves you full. So don't pass by Supreme, located conveniently across the street from Somerville hospital on Highland Ave. PS, one time they had country fried steak with gravy and buiscuits as a special, so good! read more

I'm a huge fan of Supreme Kitchen (or the Kitchen as my friends and I call it). This is the kind of place where the friendly and outgoing staff get to know your name and talk to you about the community. I moved here recently from Texas and find my mornings at the Kitchen to be reminiscent of a small-town diner, where the coffee is fresh, the food is hearty, and even the customers don't mind chatting. The food is enjoyable and reasonably priced; even the portions are generous! I would recommend the meatlovers omelette, the chicken fried steak and biscuits (a meal for two), or even the pancakes and eggs. Don't come here if you are looking for top of the line brunch and mimosas, but definitely come in for a good cup of coffee, some eggs, and a conversation. read more

I used to live right down the street from Supreme Kitchen and made a habit of going every Saturday morning. They couldn't be any nicer - the service is fantastic and the food is great. They have unbelievable chili - I had a bit of a chili and cheese omelet addiction going for a while. They always have very cute themed specials (Irish breakfast near St. Patty's day, Red, White and Blue pancakes near the 4th, etc,) and awesome thick bacon. Overall, if you don't feel like waiting in line at Sound Bites, go up a few blocks to Highland ave. read more

Somerville has no shortage of great breakfast places, but Supreme Kitchen has become a favorite for my partner and me. It serves both breakfast and lunch (try the Portuguese soup for lunch! - Often a very generous bowl of it is served as part of a sandwich combo.) The Highland Ave. location is cheerful and cozy, and the oowner (I think he is, anyway) - John - is a terrific guy. I've yet to meet a friendlier host/chef anywhere ane the man knows his sports, movies, and politics. The breakfasts are great, very moderately priced. This probably was one of the worst breakfasts I've ever had in my life. The service is really unwelcoming. There was a hair baked into the stale blueberry muffin, my pancakes were an inch thick, raw in the middle and slightly burnt on the outside. The scrambled eggs I ordered was a thin pancake of egg. There was also a hair in my son's waffles. We asked for tap water and the waitress told us that its going to be warm tap water from the faucet and that we should just buy a bottle of water from the cooler. The ATM they have because they're cash only didn't work and my husband had to run down the street and get cash somewhere else to pay. This place is so bad. Don't go. read more

As many of the other reviews attest, this place is fabulous. I stopped in for the first time this morning on the recommendation of a friend, and was glad I did. Specials are wacky -- today's Valentine's Day/President's day double-hit had all named after presidential wives and lovers -- and not really my thing. When I go out for breakfast, all I'm really looking for is two eggs over-easy, toast, and maybe some meat, and for something so simple, it's really important that everything is spot-on. Eggs were perfect, rye toast maybe over-buttered, but not drenched, hash browns better than I was expecting. The western omelette my co-bruncher ordered also got good reviews. The self-serve coffee, I go back and forth on. On the one hand, it's nice to be able to refill whenever you'd like from a choice of brews, but it loses some charm by not having a waitress walking around with her orange-and-black-handled pots. Apart from food, It loses a star for the proximity of tables as a few other reviews mentioned. Especially in the morning, I'm really not interested in interacting with strangers, so two two-person tables shoved up against each other isn't very welcome. Ambiance is helped by the cute non-industrial stove in the open kitchen and the fact that regulars were having a conversation with the cook across the divide. So yummy! $25 for breakfast for two. We didn't have to wait at all at around 11 on a Saturday. Our waitress was nice but not super friendly. I had eggs, toast, and shredded potatoes. My BF got the breakfast bonanza which was that with pancakes and meats. The pancakes were delicious, so I might get those next time. They had a ton of good looking specials too. So, lets just start with the fact that when I go inside of the restaurant to pick up my breakfast. It looked dirty, cramped and not the place I really wanted a breakfast from. I ordered a standard 2 eggs, with homefries and sausage. Once home and ready to eat I noticed I literally had maybe 10 small cubed potates with a bunch of burnt potatoe skin everywhere. The food was cold. The toast was soggy. The only good thing was the sausages. Everything else was completely garbage. I wouldn't go there again, that's for sure! read more

I certainly do enjoy this place. We used to go to S&S all the time for brunch, but it was very expensive, had an insane wait, and sat heavy in our stomachs all day. Supreme Kitchen is small, with quick service and awesome food. The grits are the best; you should get them whenever they are offered. I love that the coffee and juice are self-service. The pancakes are always perfectly cooked, and the omelets are great. Like people before have said, the specials (always with a theme) are usually a good bet. I definitely recommend the breakfast menu above the lunch, but if you do get a sandwich, get the mayo on the side because they load it on. read more

I love living so close to this little place. the atmosphere is perfect for grabbing breakfast or lunch, or in the winter, dinner. They extend their hours till 9pm for the winter. otherwise it's only open till 3pm. they frequently do specials to change things up a bit which i like. Pancakes are great! The dinners are great, and they have new people working now to help out with the later hours who are super friendly and helpful. Before they worked there, I had a hard time knowing if I could sit myself or if someone would come over to the table with a menu- there wasn't always the typical welcome greeting one expects. This is definitely much nicer then a fast food food place, but the service is fast. on weekends you may have to wait for a table since it is small. read more

The Supreme Kitchen is your quintessential neighborhood spot for those in the Somerville Hospital/Spring Hill/Winter Hill areas of Somerville. Easily accessible on Highland Ave by the 88 and 90 bus routes, it is a wonderful hole in the wall with reliably good food. The restaurant is small, with only about 10 tables and there is generally a wait on weekends. They serve only breakfast and lunch closing at 2 or 3 PM. There seems to be one regular waitress who we always have when we go in. I would agree with a previous poster on some of the food recommendations: 1. Any of their revolving breakfast specials always seem to be extra tasty, made with special care and attention to ensure a good review. I recently had an eggs benedict dish made with sausage that was outstanding! 2. I've never gone wrong here with a classic burger and fries. The burgers are juicy and well cooked, along with tasty fries. Their iced coffee is pretty good, and a bargain for the $1.25 they charge. The prices can't be beat, the bill for two of us including drinks and two entrees has never come to more than $20. read more

Okay if there was a way to give 3 1/2 stars I would. I had tried this joint before & was basically unimpressed. But I had heard it recently changed owners so I figured i would give it another chance. Chicken soup was delicious, and they carry soup all year long! A bonus in my book. meatballs were better then average (I am SUPER HARD to please with sauce & meatballs), sauce was a little too sweet for my tastes, but definitely NOT bad. Please do not eat here, because then I will have to wait longer to enjoy my delicious breakfast. Seriously, the food is great. A lot of the menu is what you could cook at home, but the difference is that it's quite reasonably priced and it's great for meeting up with friends. However, their specials are quite tasty and often lead to things that sound weird but taste delicious (on President's Day weekend, the "Jimmy Carter" is french toast stuffed with peanut butter, and is amazing, though is sure to offend any nutritionist). There's also the "international eggs benedict", variations on eggs benedict with food from different cuisines. Polish eggs benedict (kielbasa and sauerkraut instead of canadian bacon) is my favorite. The coffee and beverages are self-service, which is great. They have regular and decaf coffee, and then about 3-4 flavored coffees, and you can get whatever you want whenever you want it. But seriously, don't go here, because then you'll be hogging my table. read more

I mean, ew. When I moved to Somerville, this establishment had seen some misfortune; i.e., a car plowed through the front of the building. It has now reopened, and I finally decided to give it a shot. I should say first that I frequent Ball Square Cafe, Deluxe Town Diner and The Neighborhood (Union Sq) and was hoping for another great stop to have a late morning breakfast. In short, there was a large, curly black hair on the home fries, the biscuit was most definitely from a pillsbury microwave singles packet, the hashbrown cakes were from a package and greasy like, whoa... The hollandaise was from a powder and the coffee was watery. On the upside, the server was not unpleasant and the space is comfortable and sunny. Parking is pretty easy and there was not even a hint of a wait on a Saturday around lunchtime (but now I understand why). I like to give restaurants at least two chances before I write them off, but I'm not sure how likely it is that I'll be back. read more

I want to give this place more stars, I really do. Fact is, it's hard to find a decent breakfast place in this town that isn't a complete rip-off. Sure, you could spend 25 bucks on eggs Benedict drizzled in creme fraiche for some reason, but if you want plain eggs, toast, hash browns and coffee for under 10 bucks, you're probably not going anywhere near Boston. So Supreme Kitchen ought to be the best place on earth, given that the food is for the most part fantastic, and you can certainly squeak out of here for 10 bucks with tip, right? Well, there are a few problems. 1) The food that isn't good is terrible. Biscuits? Dry, hockey-puckish, and sans flavor. Sausage gravy? I don't know where they got the recipe, but it wasn't the south, and sausage gravy comes from the south. Pancakes? Tough, like they are at most places, but I'm going to keep complaining about it until someone realizes you don't beat the ever-lovin'-crap out of the batter. You just don't. 2) The cooking takes forever, possibly because there is only one guy doing it. I've been there 3 times and I've never seen anyone else back there, and if it's busy you're going to wait about 45 minutes for your food. Once, I was seated immediately, ordered 30 seconds later, waited an hour for my food, ate in 10 minutes (I had somewhere to be), and checked out about 2 minutes after that. Meal should have taken a half-hour, but it took more than twice that. I was by myself. 3) Tied in to #2 is the fact that on two of the three occasions I've gone to SK, they've messed up my order. The first time was the above hour+ meal, where I was informed the cook had made the wrong dish, but had to eat it anyway or wait for him to cook my actual order. I didn't have another 30 minutes to wait while he cooked. The second time, they informed me of the mistake before the food came out, and I didn't have anyplace to be, so I was fine waiting for my actual order, but they put a rush job on the new food, so the hash browns were under-cooked. Like, limp and not terribly warm. Conclusion? They need at least another cook back there, preferably someone who's going to remember what goes in each special, so I can have a diner-style breakfast in diner-style time. The food quality saves, but Supreme Kitchen needs to up its game. read more
