If my hair is completely in dire need of a cut and I'm kind of broke until Friday I will take the chance on a Supercuts cut. Agreed that it is completely hit or miss, but really it's Supercuts and as a guy you're paying 15 bucks for a 15 minute haircut. They not pampering you, they aren't giving you a temple message... this is quick and easy, in and out. Usually there's a wait, but I've never ever waited longer then 20 minutes. They move fast and there is usually 8 or 9 people cutting hair. I wish that I actually paid attention to the names of the styles when they greet you because there are a few that are absolutely great and give a great cut, EVERY TIME. The one time that I was the victim to a downright horrible haircut from here (it was bad, really bad) I put in a call to a friend that actually worked for the Malden Supercuts who then hooked me up with Jimmy from Boylston St. Jimmy made sure that I was taken care of the next day without wait and with a full refund for the previous cut. Hats off (literally) to rectifying a bad haircut. One thing I wish was different, I hate get brushed with talc powder on a towel at the end. Get a real brush that my barber uses. read more

Go to Helen, she's the best. I'm Korean and have straight, very fine hair that is very dense. I think the term is very high 'follicles per square inch'. I've been to many expensive salons, but I think they don't do any better than the mall salons. Helen understands Asian hair texture (round hair) and current styles. 2 years ago, I thought I'd try this place - why not, right? At the time, I had mid-back length hair, with a deep side part and long bangs. I just wanted a trim The older woman (maybe latina (?) with short curly hair) who cut my hair parted it in the middle and then cut it without trying to blend it, So, when i parted my hair on the side, it looked TERRIBLE! Like a I had a shelf of hair on one side that was much shorter than the rest of the hair. Because I'm not a complainer, I paid and left. Later that day, I looked in the mirror and absolutely hated it and was embarrassed to go to my professional job sporting such a hack-job. I went to another salon in the Pru to ask if they could fix it, but they lost a customer when they directed me to go back to the salon that did it. So, back to Supercuts I trudged, the original woman who cut my hair was gone, thank god, but Helen immediately saw what was wrong and did the best she could to fix it without completely chopping off all of my long hair. I was so impressed by Helen's attention to detail and willingness to assess the best hair shape for me, I've been going to her since then. Helen does the best job on my hair that I've ever gotten, and I cannot believe she is so inexpensive. I always tip 120% because that is what I can afford, even though I feel Helen's hair cuts are worth much more than that! read more

Ask for Laura or Pam. You know, Supercuts is always hit or miss. When I lived in Miami I knew to avoid it like the plague, but this one here on Boylston is pretty good. I have crazy hair that has all kinds of problems and an awkwardly shaped back-of-the-head. Thing is, you gotta know which of the barbers are good. In this one you gotta ask for Laura or Pam. I tend to go a long time between haircuts. I know I need to go soon when people start asking me, "Are you in a band?" I know I need to go NOW when people start saying, "Can I help you, miss?" So for me, it's pretty important a haircut be fairly good, or it's going to be a problem for a long time. I've gone to this Supercuts a lot and it is, unfortunately, a little hit-or-miss. I've had some hair disasters here in Boston, not just at Supercuts. I try to explain what I want, and I get resistance, confusion or fear. Not because it's really extreme what I want--in fact, it's fairly basic--but because what I ask for seems so different from what I have when I walk in. When I get a good haircut, I walk in looking like I should be playing for OK Go, and I walk out looking clean-cut enough to be a FBI agent. Some hairstylists can't handle that, so I end up with choppy messes that grew into mullets, or massive cowlicks, or--as has happened more than once--looking like Bastian from the Neverending Story. Some of those disasters have happened at this Supercuts. Sometimes, when I have had to try someone new it has turned out terrible. However, some of the best cuts I've ever had were here, too. Pam, who has left, used to give me exactly the cut I wanted every time. Diana, who I believe is still there, gives me a very good cut every time. She is never afraid to take off as much hair as I ask for, and always leaves it looking good. It grows in just right, and I am always pleased with the job she does. Some of the stylists here are not good at cutting men's hair, especially fairly thin hair like mine. But some do a very good job, and I definitely recommend Diana. One tip: if you can bring a photo of what you want, it'll help way more than any description you can give, and I have had much better results since I started bringing one in. read more

Lola is the BEST! Not only was my "just a trim" exactly what I wanted, my eyebrows turned out SUPERB - I think I may be more excited about the eyebrow wax than the actual cut! Not to mention, the cut, blow dry and wax was only $35 with tip! The secret to Supercuts (or any discount/walk-in/chain salon) is to ask for less than you want because most often the stylist will go overboard. Ask for a 1/4 of an inch when you want 1/2, etc. and your bound to be satisfied. Sorry Newbury Street, I will only be visiting you twice a year for an overpriced "salon experience", other than that, Supercuts has my vote! read more

I went here on Sunday for a quick trim. I have been growing my hair out for almost a year and it was finally the length i wanted, but the ends were starting to split. I told her to trim 1 inch, maybe even 1/2 an inch and take the layers up 3 since they had grown out. She hacked off 6 inches. They layers were also not woven in properly and left my hair looking like a Frankenstein monster that was half layer half who knows what. The worst was that I didn't even notice it was so terrible until after I got home as I was instructed to not wear my glasses as she was cutting. Even my boyfriend who is extremely generous with compliments told me it looked bad. I am going back to a family friend who lives out of the city tonight to get it corrected, but each day when i get out of the shower, before I put my hair into a ballerina bun I actually cry quite a bit since it will take the better part of a year to get the length back. read more

If my stylist Richard ever finds out that I betrayed him...and not even with another over-priced, high brow stylist from an equally upscale salon...but with someone from SuperCuts...I don't think he would ever deign to touch my glorious mane again. That being said... I am slightly, albeit relunctantly, impressed with the service. For $35.00 I received a shampoo, cut and blowdry. Sounds expensive to some, but compared with the $80.00 Richard charges me (and I love him, I do)...it's a huge savings. I think her name was Nan...it could have been Pam...she was fast, efficient, and didn't try anything fancy. I walked away with a trim and a really good-looking blow-out. Can't promise I'll return (I like my Newbury salon experience complete with wine and massages)...but with times like these...who knows!? read more

I (just like every other positive review) get it: Supercuts is not for everybody. If your instructions are complicated enough that it takes more than a sentence or two, you may be out of luck. But in the city, I honestly can't find anywhere that beats a $15 haircut, and price is the bottom line for me. I wish I knew some specific stylists to recommend- I've had a lot of success with a middle-aged (possibly gay?) Asian guy, and a younger Asian chick (maybe named Helen), but I haven't had a BAD experience with anyone I've ended up with. read more

Supercuts is great if you know how your hair should look. If you're one of those people who tries to go in and ask for something creative, you're probably not going to come out looking that great. This is a perfect set up for the college students in the area since most of us want something quick and know what we want. (less than 30 minutes for guys). That being said, it's not the cheapest ($15 for a haircut), and the risk associated with every different cutter is tough. read more

The haircut wasn't the issue, it was being gouged with the clippers to the point of blood. There's a smaller scratch on the other side as well. A little more attention to the customers, and a little less rushing and talking to peers. I certainly won't be going back. read more

I took my 3 years old here for a quick trim to try out since it is so close to my house. I thought the hairdresser was going to cut his ears off, scratch his face or accidentally poke him in the eyes with her scissors. Yikes! She talked constantly and not pay attention to what she is doing. She sprays water all over him and in his eyes. Even though, it took less then 10 mins but I wanted to grab him out of the chair. Poor kid! He was probably frozen in fear. Back to his old hair salon in Chestnut Hill for his next cut. I rather drive and pay $$$. I gave two stars because she might be good for adults but not for kids. read more

My husband has been going here since we moved to the area about a year ago. I, on the other hand, tend to be very hesitant about trusting my hair to people. I find someone I like and stick with it. That said, since moving here, I'd only gotten my hair cut once, at the Salon on 10 Newbury Street, and while the cut was okay, I wasn't WOW'ed enough by it or the stylists to return. With summer in full swing, and me in desperate need of a shorter cut, I decided to try out Supercuts. I got there around noonish on a Saturday, and expected to have to wait a while, however, they were able to take me right away. The woman who took care of me was wonderful (I'm terrible at names though, I think it was "Jo-Jo" or something like that?), and I'm more pleased with the cut I got here than my last cut at The Salon, and for a better price (about $24, after leaving a 25% tip)! I would agree with the people that say get there early if you're going in on a weekend though. I think I just missed the rush, as the lobby seemed to be full of waiting customers when I paid and left. Another plus is that you can both pay and have tip added on your credit card/debit card. Probably one of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten. Didn't even get my hair wet before she started hacking it all off. There was a brief moment during the haircut where I legitimately had a mullet and I had to basically advise her that this looked nothing like what I wanted and show her what to do. It was painful and I was left with a haircut I was embarrassed of. Everything is uneven. I guess it's a good thing I bought a new hat because it'll be getting a lot of use. Was trying to save money on haircuts, but never again. Went in last month and they did a decent job. Returned this week, got the same person, and it was horrible. The woman cutting my hair didn't even pay attention to where the part was, and then she buzzed part of my hair that should have been done with scissors. It happened so quickly that I didn't even have the chance to say anything. Now I will just have to wait for it to grown out. I am very disappointed. I received a haircut from Lola and I specifically asked her to not cut my hair shorter in the back. I asked for just for a trim, because I was trying to grow my hair out in the back. She cut it very short and uneven in the back and tried to make up for it by styling my hair in a very odd way. It was also a bit bizarre because she asked how much I would be tipping her instead of letting me write down the amount. I gave her a decent tip, but I am very disappointed with this botched job. I may come back, but never for Lola. Edit - Peggy contacted me to send a check for the haircut and probably coax me to write an updated review to make the Supercuts look better. I responded with my address and concerns. She never responded and never sent the check. This is a serious problem and Supercuts is obviously not in the business of keeping customers happy. Laura gave me the best haircut I've ever had, including my previous visits to higher end salons. Like probably many other people on here, I came into this location for a fix. I had gotten some bad layers from another, more expensive salon that I didn't want to return to, and just needed the bottom layers to be shortened. However, my stylist (wish I could remember her name!) went beyond that and gave me more layers to make my hair blend out better. Went here on a Wednesday for a blowout. Had just washed and dried my hair just needed a curling iron taken to it. The place was not busy at all. There were four people standing around, floor was a mess not a smile or a greeting from anyone. The woman doing my hair scratched my scalp with a cheap brush and burned it with the hairdryer. 10 minutes later no longer, I was at the check out for $35. I really should have known better. Summary: Are you a masochist who enjoys getting a runaround? If so, you'll love trying to schedule an appointment with this SuperCuts store. In spite of the fact that I really like one particular stylist at this store, and would love to get my hair cut by her regularly, they are 110% incompetent in managing their appointments. A few weeks ago I had an appointment, and showed up to discover with amusement that 2 other people in the waiting room were scheduled at the same time with the same stylist. Today's episode that put me over the edge played out like this: I made an appointment. An hour or so later they called to say WHOOPS they were double booked, and asked me to reschedule, which I did. I came for a basic men's haircut on a weekday morning when there were no customers waiting. I was at the back bay store and there was a old black lady who cut my hair. I described what I was looking for and showed her a picture which I don't think she really even looked at. She gave me a single buzz around the sides and back and did some clipping and within 5 minutes she was asking me what hair product I use and undoing my apron. The haircut was hasty and uneven, and when I got home I noticed there were many stray hairs on the back that she didn't even both to trim. HUGELY DISAPPOINTING. I had to take my own buzzer and even out the two sides myself and get rid of the unsightly stray hairs standing out for the buzz cut on the back... It felt so rushed and there was NOBODY waiting in the waiting area. I don't know if she just didn't care or doesn't know how to properly cut asian hair. I have been coming here for several years as a friend recommended & I figured why not. I don't like to fuss over my hair or spend alot of money on it either. I like the fact that you can just walk in & get a haircut. I also find it funny that although I get a haircut 1 or 2x/yr, the same person has cut my hair a few times. Helen is great, sporting her purple streaked hair, she is my go to gal. She knows my hair better than me, which is awesome. I think it can be hit or miss w/ certain people cutting your hair. I went today for the first time and I am very happy with it. Before coming here I tried other cheap places in Boston but the service was terrible. I don't know the name of the girl who cut my hair but she was amazing. She was nice, polite and friendly and before cutting she checked with me the it was what I wanted. I'm not a big fun of hairdressers and I don't care that much about my hair so I'm looking for a cheap place and for $15.99 this is the best you can get in Boston.
