I got a blonde root touch up here with naturally black roots so it was a double process. When I got it done the roots and color came out more gray/silver maybe from over processing I'm not sure and we ran out of time to finish my hair because the stylist had an appointment so I had to call and schedule a day to fix it and they went above and beyond. The manager at the front is so kind and amazing and they made sure I left happy with my hair. Everything was explained and I wasn't charged for the correction and styling. Got a great cut (and blowdry) from Shannon, as well as a color consultation. It has been waaaaaay too long since I had my hair cut at a salon. Have been cutting it myself - I know, eeek! Anyway, in addition to not making fun of me for cutting my own hair, Shannon was wonderful. I didn't really know what I wanted to do so we discussed my style, my preferences, how often I wear it curly or straight, my job/office environment, how much time I have to get ready in the morning... all great things to ask. In the end I got a great cut that I love and which will be super easy for me to style and wear a lot of ways. I also asked her for advice about styling products and she was super helpful. As for the color consultation, I have been considering letting my grey (actually white, there is no such thing as grey hair - which I knew and Shannon told me too - smart!) grow in for a long time because I don't like how often I have to color it to maintain my roots and we discussed some options for color to make it easier to grow in and then maintain and keep it looking nice. I'll be booking an appointment with her for that in the near future. In addition to the specifics of my stylist, the salon is in a great location, it's a very pleasant environment, and I was very happy with their pricing which was completely reasonable. I asked for my hair to be blown out with volume. Motioned that I would like height with my hands. Told the stylist just to use conditioner on the ends because it would get too flat. And what did I get? Stick straight hair glued to my head. I caught the error about 1/2 thru the drying process so she used a curling iron but it was too late. Now it is $60 later (and I tipped her like a fool) and my hair is plastered on my head. And she managed to insult me in the process by telling me how fine my hair is. Went to Alysse. She told me she would cut off 2 inches. Removed closer to four. My hair is a yellow blond (not attractive)and looks like I could do it myself. The the foils were removed at the same time, so it processed at different times. Why is it so hard to find a half way decent stylist in Boston?! I'm so sick of assuming people will turn out to be talented hair dressers. I've really never met one. On the good side, the people are nice. I should mention...that I asked for 2/3 highlights 1/3 my natural color as the lowlight. There are no low lights. I can't see my natural color anywhere - it's just all blonde. Got a pixie cut today. The hair stylist was Shamonim. She was really fast, and paid a lot of attention to details,which I like. She understands that I have typical asian hair (thick and straight), and told me in advance about the final result wont look like the model pic that I showed her. ONE THING that I dont like about James Joseph is their service in general. for example. i got bunch of hair in my shoes, water would run in my ear when they are washing my hair etc. OVERALL. I was staying at the Courtyard Marriott right around the corner from the W. My daughter was having her wedding at the Courtyard (check it out for weddings!). I looked on Yelp and found James Joseph Salon. I called them asking to schedule six wash and blow outs for Friday afternoon prior to the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. I called the Monday of that week. They were able to put us in at 2, 3, and 4pm. We all loved the wash and unbelievable scalp massage and then the wonderful blowouts. Three more people went the next day after they saw our hair Friday night. Prices were between $45 and $60 - well worth the money and convenience. Great experience. read more

James Joseph Salon has opened a new location on the first floor of the W Hotel. Meanwhile, nearly all of the stylists from the former Debu Salon have moved over here. (About a half mile down the street from where Debu was located.) Debu is no more, and I was super concerned when I called their number to book my appointment and thought I had the wrong business. However, I was soon reassured that it was all my favorite services and the amazing stylist Kathy were all that this new location under a new name. The new salon space is bright and stylish, with tall windows giving a view out to the street. It is small, but the area is smartly used. Water or coffee are offered upon arrival, and a large selection of styling products are available for purchase. My haircut was fantastic. Kathy quickly diagnosed a cure for my neglected split ends, and started in on the flat ironing for my dry cut. Afterwards I enjoyed the yummy smelling shampoo and styling and left with a fantastic new cut. Well worth a slightly longer trip to the salon! read more

Kathy!!! I came in after a botched hair cut (read: short choppy layers in my thick wavy hair) from a salon on Beacon Street (the only one that is open on Sundays). I was trying to grow my hair out and was sad to have to go short again to even out the layers. Kathy analyzed my hair with precision and we came up with a game plan for how to grow out my hair and fix the botched cut. Kathy was professional, unhurried and I had great results every time. Like other Yelpers was a little nervous about the dry cuts, but it always came out great. It did take a few more minutes, but the wash and blow out at the end was worth it. I loved that I could book appointments online. I've moved from the area a few weeks back and am sad to leave her! I think the price for the cut is very reasonable for a city. read more

Best hair stylist in Boston is Lisa and she works here!!! I have been going to her for about 10 years now and I am obsessed with how she does my hair. I literally would fly home from San Francisco when I lived there for her to do my hair because I could never find anyone like her. She has an amazing eye for color and changes my color every 4 months. I continuously get complemented on it and love it. I love the more recent new location of James Joseph in the W Hotel. It's small, quaint and clean. I love the decor around the salon. The staff is super friendly and I always feel welcome when I am there. The parking isn't the best especially on a Saturday but the hotel offers valet for $15 which isn't bad at all. The salon practices dry cut which is a unique style of cutting hair when it's dry. Not many places do which is another reason why I will never find a new hairstylist. If you are looking for a new hairstylist, that is all around AWESOME go to James Joseph at the W and ask for Lisa, you will not be disappointed. read more

There are few things I'm willing to spend a ton of money on on a regular basis, and my hair is one of them! I followed Shannon here from Liquid Salon and I don't regret it at all. First of all, she is an amazing stylist and kind person- such a great combination! She has always listened to what I want for my hair and also encourages me when she can sense both my hesitancy and my I-really-want-to-try-this mash up of feelings. She's the only person I actually trust with cutting and coloring my hair (with Shannon, I went from 12 in of long, black hair to a super short androgynous, platinum colored cut). Every time I leave her chair, I feel more and more like myself. I've had awesome experiences with the salon itself. Because I'm there so often to maintain my bleached 'do, the person at the front desk always greets me (forgive me, I can't remember his name) the same welcoming way each time and once complimented my hair in a way that felt so genuine! Erin sometimes shampoos/conditions my hair and she is hysterical and super sweet as well. I'm never pressured to buy anything, although they do have a great selection of products I often stare at while waiting for my appointment (which is never too long). I stopped in one Saturday evening while in the Theatre District before going to a show. I needed a good clarifying shampoo and a good moisturizing conditioner and rather than schlepping myself over to Newbury Street or to the Aveda stores, I figured I would stop in since we were close by. The staff working totally helped me out despite popping in right before closing time. The stylist helped me pick out a shampoo based on my hair type and recommended a few conditioners that would work. I knew it wasn't going to be a cheap venture, but I was willing to pay. She went on to explain that contrary to popular belief, I wouldn't need to use a lot of it and I would see improvement in my hair over a week of use. She was totally right. I never felt swindled and I didn't feel like she was trying to sell me on the most expensive products nor did I feel like they were trying to get me in and out in a landspeed record time. I live really close to this salon, felt like getting my haircut one day and showed up as a walk-in. I got seen right away by Schardinee. Looking back now, I had no idea how lucky I got that day. Schardinee really is one of the most talented stylists ever to set hands on my hair. She really has an eye for what looks good on you. She is someone I would completely trust if I told her to cut my hair however she wants to. She explained every product she put into my hair without pressuring me to but anything. The receptionist was also really nice and offered water while I waited and hung my jacket for me. Compared to other salons in that area, the price was great. Salon is well kept and also well lit. I have honestly never been able to find a stylist who could take me from brown-black to ashy and Alyse did it in under three hours without even slightly frying my hair. Was honestly not going to leave a review as this happened a few weeks ago but now that I'm stuck correcting the "stylist" error with spending hundreds of dollars elsewhere I am going to leave a review. My issue is not with the salon itself. My issue is with Gwen, a stylist there. I just moved to town and have been trying to find a salon that works for me. I chose James Joseph at the W hotel because it was close to my apartment. (I previously went to another Boston salon that did a great job before but it was too far away). The reviews looked good and I checked out their page and it looked like they were capable of doing a highlight. So I went in and asked for a partial foil. When I sat down I told her I like my highlights a cooler tone and I wanted toned. She was not very friendly to start but that's fine, I had to work so that didn't bother me. I started noticing something was off with the highlights pretty early on and as someone who has been getting highlights for 15 years, though I am not a professional I kind of have an idea of what goes on in the highlighting process. I just decided to trust her process but when I saw myself in the mirror, it was clear my hair was BAD. I told her once she blow dried it that my hair was literally orange and didn't match the ends of my hair whatsoever. That's when she started to get super rude. She didn't want to admit she messed up. She took me over and toned me again. She literally had no clue what she was doing. She was literally googling toners to mix up. That would have been fine but after the toner my hair still was orange. I told her to just stop and she started getting really mean to me saying "maybe you shouldn't hop from stylist to stylist" she said, well I just moved here and don't really have an option. Another stylist over heard and saw me literally fighting back tears and apologized on her behalf. I got to the front and at check out, voiced my concerns to the check out guy. He brought another stylist over and she tried her best to tell Gwyen how to fix it. Gwen still couldn't admit she messed up and toned it again. At this point it was a little better, not super up to my standards and the highlights were clearly chunky but whatever, they tried. Obviously now the toner is fading out and my hair is ORANGE again. I'm just upset. I paid for the service, $220 because it's still a business and I'm not a bad person but I mine as well just set that $220 on fire because what a waste. I had to pay for a color correction at another salon for $500 to fix Gwen's mistake. Don't go to her! The other stylists seemed lovely and knew what they were doing but not her! read more

I have gotten my hair with Alysse many times, and have always loved it. Last month I made the mistake of going to a different salon and getting Balayage... It was very expensive and ended up being a complete mess. It was not blended, looked very fake, the color was too bright, and overall it was not a good job. I went to see Alysse to get a color correcting, and like always she did a wonderful job! She tried a toner to cool down the brassy parts, but it did not worked so she did a single color process. At the end the result was just what I wanted to begin with, my hair looks healthy, vibrant, the color looks natural and just a bit lighter. Shannon is amazing. I moved to CA from the East Coast last year and have had to try to find a new hairdresser (the same fabulous woman has cut my hair since I was like 10). This search resulted in some unfortunate haircuts. I've been trying to let the most recent cut grow out, but it had started to look like a mullet in the past month or so. Shannon somehow salvaged my cut despite the fact that she didn't have much to work with. She turned a mullet into a sleek and easy lob (long bob). I've been going to James Joseph Salon for years to get my hair done by Shannon. She's a total pro at doing fun colors (I frequently add in some blue, purple, pink, whatever I want and recently went fully rainbow). She's stayed late to finish my hair to make sure it's perfect, gives great advice on how to keep my hair healthy and even managed to bring my hair back to gorgeous blonde from some pretty disastrous hair colors (a home done red with highlights and my incredibly faded rainbow hair in the end). Everyone I meet thinks my blonde is natural thanks to her work and I will definitely keep coming back to her, even though I moved halfway across the country. It is a bit pricier for me, I usually spend a couple hundred every three months to get highlights, toner, cut and blow dry but it's well worth it for me. Tips are cash only. Though our appointment was supposed to be 2 hours (based on appt system on website), Lisa took the time to make sure the color and cut was right. She's talented and can do no wrong! I am in love with this place! Well worth the money for the excellent work they do. I came as a referral from my sister who sees Kathy. I scheduled and appointment one day to see her for a cut and color to find that she was very meticulous with everything I asked. My hair has come out perfect every time. There are days that I need to get my hair done when Kathy is not working so I read all the great reviews about Schardinee and booked appointments with her. She is fantastic! I love knowing that I can go to either of these ladies, get great service, and leave feeling like a new woman. Extra points for being able to make appointments online. My only issue is that it's really, really hard to find parking in that area. Unfortunately that is something they can't control. Either you get lucky with street parking (bring quarters for the meter!), pay an arm and a leg for garage parking, or take the T. Oh, and tips cannot be left on a credit card. The receptionist was very nice and booked me with a stylist named Chardonnay after I called the W location to find out if anyone was available who was good at cutting thick, wavy hair. I brought in a picture of a style I liked, and she really nailed it. It was kind of a choppy cut with straight across longer bangs. I haven't been this happy with a haircut in years. Chardonnay cut my hair and bangs dry, which I had never experienced before, and it came out great. Mary Chheng and Tavi de la Rosa are masters. They did my hair and makeup for my wedding and everything turned out perfect. Mary did such a great job with my hair with all hairstyles (by request) for each of my 6 bridesmaids. Tavi did an amazing job with the makeup, pure magic. I will follow Melissa anywhere. My hair is blonde (with some highlight help) and super fine, but there is a lot of it--as well as a few well placed cowlicks that make cutting/styling it (especially my swoop bangs, which rarely swoop correctly) somewhat tricky. Melissa tackled my cut with expertise and a dry cut (my first) not to mention that she is THE MOST RELAXING PERSON EVER. SERIOUSLY. She should record for those voice meditation/relaxation tapes. Her voice alone is reason to go back, not to mention there is no pressure to keep up inane conversation if you don't want--and her personality (calm, cool, collected, pleasant) immediately puts you at ease. It makes me wish I wasn't trying to grow out my locks so I could get a 'haircut' (aka relaxation treatment) every 4 weeks. As a hair stylist myself I'm looking for a great blow out when I am on vacation. this salon did not disappoint. My stylist Melissa, is a master at her craft. I asked for a "twisty blow dry" and my hair is difficult. She sculpted my hair into a beautiful shape, quickly and efficiently. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is because my shampoo associate was speaking about leaving the salon and going to barber school, and how she failed her test to become a stylist in the salon. I understand I asked, but i just think the level of professionalism was not there with her, when I walked in, her and a fellow employee were eating a snack in plain sight on the floor. In my salon, that would never fly. Melissa is a bit pricey (57 for a blow out) but WELL worth it. Will visit her again if I am in the area! read more
