I am a female in my 20s and work in the financial district. I don't dye my hair, but love getting little trims every few months. My hair is blonde, fine and very easy/manageable, therefore it takes about 5 minutes to trim. Most salons in the city will charge me $40 for those 5 minutes. There's a reason I set an alarm at 7 am to call the store when it opens. And that reason is to ensure I get a reservation with Helen. I had the good fortune of dropping in to the Supercuts in Boylston (check that store's reviews for more raving reviews about her) about a year ago and catching Helen in a rare moment when she had an opening for a walk-in. I haven't let anyone else touch my hair since. Helen is extremely communicative, conscientious, and knowledgeable, and works with me to give me the exact haircut I need and lets me know everything I need to know about how to maintain it. When I told her I was too broke to get a haircut more often as would be needed for the cut I have, Helen cut it in such a way that allows my hair to still look wonderful even after I'm past my due date for a touch up. People constantly remarked on how great my hair looked after I started visiting Helen, and I've referred her to anyone looking for a great stylist since. They all swear by Helen now. I like to think we're all in a Helen hair cult. I'm Mexican and have thick, wavy hair and Helen cuts it better than anyone I've ever gone to, including back home in San Diego and Tijuana. A friend I've referred is Filipino and also has thick hair. Two of my queer friends also love the way Helen cuts their hair. I've been growing my hair out for two years with no trims, so I badly needed one. Saw some of the good female reviews on here and decided it couldn't be that bad since I just needed an inch or so off the bottom. I walked in around 10:15/10:30 on a Friday morning and they took me right away. Erica was extremely nice and when I mentioned I just needed a trim, she first proposed to take even less than I was prepared to lose. That had me sold right then and there; normally stylists love to take way more than "only an inch" or talk you into other ideas/products. Erica gave me the perfect trim to even everything out and she even gave me an idea for an updo for a wedding I attended the next weekend. I will definitely go back and see Erica for my next cut. It's just a basic regular and simple combover haircut and she ruined my top hair just because it is a busy Friday evening. Ok, this is NOT a great review for Helen. Since everybody was talking about her, I said let's give it a try. I had my hair cut twice with her and I don't think she is such a great stylist that everyone is raving about. You will get more of like what she wants-and this is not always good. Although I really really appreciate stylist's suggestions, because let's face it-we never know what haircut we want, my experience with Helen was one of the worst and I am not returning there. I chose that salon because it was cheap but I feel like Helen was trying to create fake drawbacks to get out more money. I hate when I go to a service and can feel that they are trying to soak up as much money as they can from you. If I wanted to pay a fortune for a haircut, a blow-dry and a styling I would go definitely go to a better salon. My first experience was pretty ok. I usually prefer not to wash my hair in the salon and I go there with wet hair. 99.9% of the time, my hair stylists are fine with that. They just spray my hair and they start cutting! I have soft, straight, middle length hair, nothing special and very easy to cut. So, the first time, Helen didn't seem very happy about that but she did it and the result was ok. However, my second and last experience was disappointing. We had again the same conversation, I didn't want her to wash my hair and just spray them. She said I won't be able to cut your hair correctly if I don't wash them. I told her SPRAY THEM.She didn't respond and she started cutting. With dry hair. YES! Not a single spray. Then, this time she thought that I had a lot of hair and she couldn't work without washing them, so it won't be her fault if I don't like the outcome. She obviously wanted more money so, she had to come up with something more clever. We were discussing how I wanted the haircut and I told her that I want some lawyers because I had my hair cut straight for over a year now and I was tired of them. She was like "Oh no, no, no you are not doing this because your hair will be very poofy, you are not gonna like it". I go: I do that haircut for over 10 years now and my hair are perfectly fine. She goes well, ok but I won't make you a lot of layers because you won't like them. (I am starting to become really crazy but nervous at the same time, obviously I don't want her to ruin my hair). In the middle of the process she goes "Yes, but we need to style them because I want to see if I have cut everything correctly and straight and if you will like it and blah blah". I go I don't want to style them. She goes again ok but it's not my fault if you don't like them. Anyway, she ended up doing whatever she wanted, cutting my hair straight again with very few layers only at the back because otherwise she said they were not going to look nice. read more

Got a Buzz cut from a Rude Woman. She took all of 2 minutes while gossiping with the other stylists about other customers. She only cut half of my head and then told me my tip wasn't enough. Two weeks ago at the end of May I went onto Supercuts to get a haircut. I was aggressively approached by an Asian "hairstylist" and sat quickly done for a haircut after telling him what I needed. he took out his scissors and was rushing through the haircut. I told him to slow down. he was in a rush. Why would you rush at 6PM at the end of the day??? I told him, "What are you doing". He did not even bother to comb my hair, ask me questions. He started butchering my hair. Then he took dull electric hair shaver and was pulling on my hair as he was chopping away. The most uneven cut I ever had. I call him the butcher of Supercuts, Summer Street. I left no tip. I left a message for the manager on their site's email and got a response the next day. The manager was empathetic, and told the hair cutter was told about the situation. I told her I wanted to wait until the hair grew out a bit to be reshaped properly. I told her a month. I was going to go after two weeks as the hair had grown out and was all over the place. I called on a day the manager was not there and spoke to an assistant, who went on the defensive and said, normally I could get a recut only after a week.. I repeated what store manager said and this assistant was looking to overrule her manager. After all, who cares about customer service and repeat business. Who am I as a customer to judge? So I pondered the situation and because of the rudeness of the assistant, I decided to go elsewhere and get a proper cut and spend the money elsewhere instead of being treated as a customer as a customer should. Therefore I will never go to another Supercuts, and especially not the store at 101 Summer Street, Boston. Stay away from the butcher of Supercuts at that location. read more

Went to Louise for a haircut about six weeks ago - was happy with the results when I walked out, and am still happy now! She asked what I wanted and made sure we were on the same page, we agreed about what would work best for my hair, and I've been receiving compliments on the results ever since. I was bit surprised by the layout of the store, it had a super small waiting area which consisted of four stools. Along with the many male clients, I wouldn't have normally gone into this store. I did however know Helen was working there and made an appointment. Helen is a great stylist and worked with me to figure out what kind of haircut I was looking for. I got a wash and cut in about 45 min which was perfect for my lunch break. She really took her time with cutting my hair and explain every step with me.
