Coco Head hair studio used to be my go-to hair salon when I still lived in Boston. From Boston to Houston, honestly, I haven't found any hair stylists as good as the ones at Coco head. This time back home, I was able to book an appointment to get a hair cut. Upon arrival, Ernie checked my temperature and check the studio's appointment log to make sure I was on it. Their covid protocols are absolutely on-point and made me feel very safe and comfortable. I noticed every stylist wore double mask and even a face shield when washing clients' hair. When each client leaves, the staffs spray down and clean the area thoroughly (I actually witness this... I was there for almost 3 hours to perm my hair!) Ok... now time for the hair review... a few years ago, I would only let Lucas cut my hair because I found him extremely helpful in guidance. He's always thorough and takes time to explain to me how to style my hair at home. This time around, I wanted a new hair do so I told Ernie on the phone to book me anyone... as long as they're experienced in a middle-part (that's the new style that I wanted, a turn from my always desired side-part). I didn't know that Lucas would also be the one to cut my hair and I'm glad it was him! Lucas examined my hair and recommended the best middle-part hair style. We chit chat for a bit and then he ultimately convinced me to perm my hair - stating that my hair style would benefit greatly from it due to the nature of my hair and head bone structure. And man is he right, I love my perm! (Actually, it's been recommended by many hair style for me to get a perm, I just never trusted anyone enough until this weekend...) I've been getting my haircut here by Joey for 6+ years, and it's been a great experience every time! I was a little nervous going to a hair salon during COVID but I really needed a haircut. I'm glad I decided to go and would highly recommend it. For COVID, they're doing temperature checks at the door, and everyone has to wear a mask. There's plexiglass between salon seats, and a maximum of 8 people inside (aka 4 stylists + 4 guests). I felt safe the entire time. I have long hair and the haircut is $55 without tip. They also wash your hair before the haircut, which is great! I typically show Joey a picture of the hairstyle I want, and he cuts it in a way that suits my face shape. I also ask a lot of questions on how to style hair, and Joey takes the time to answer them and even demonstrates them for me. He's very patient and knowledgeable about hair. For the past year, I've gotten a long bob cut and maintenance trims with Joey Cheung! All the other stylists totally seem like solid folks, as well. I love how each stylist has his or her own personality and are so detailed and caring towards each of their clients. I've been to Coco Head Hair on Saturday evenings, Weeknights, and Saturday mornings at 9 am and it's always packed- You know, something is going right when you can get young folks to show up for a haircut bright and early on a Sat AM. Right? Medium hair length cuts are $50 & we also have to factor in tip for the team who shampoos our hair/our stylist. So it averages to about $55-65 ish for a cut. Pls feel free to tip this team up more if you're balling- They totally deserve it. The salon is located in a side street in Chinatown. It's next to the corner where Dunkin Donuts is located. It's accessible my MBTA and occasional parking. Parking is hard in Chinatown so I usually try to go on Sundays or early mornings before people crowd the place. And yes, the past year- Coco Head Hair maintained Covid Safety Protocols. Everyone wears a mask. There are plastic glass dividers between each salon chair and every client's temperature is checked before entering. I recommend going to Taiwan Cafe for the szechuan fish dish, Penang (for anything), Liuyishou Hotpot, or the TOP Bread Bakery for taro bread and Portuguese egg tarts. The first time I went to get my haircut here, I felt like I knew the people there for years. The location was tricky, but Zhen came out and waved so I knew where it was. If you get lost, just call. If you exit Jia Ho using the exit that leads to the alley, not the street, Coco is to the right across the alley. Like you, I resorted to Yelp to find a new salon. Like you, I thought, "Wow. This place has a lot of good ratings. Maybe I should check it out. It's also by so many good restaurants and bakeries....what a win-win situation". He was so kind and helpful during the 5 hour session. He explained the whole process to me as we were bleaching and toning my hair, and consistently checked in on me to see if I was good. I had very entertaining conversations with him and his wife and they ensured that I was satisfied with the color and trim. Upon entry, my temperature was checked. Extremely happy with service! Cut and dyed my hair 2X with Joey and loved it both times. He's the only one who has made red and purple dye last on my black hair. When we did my red hair the first time, it was very subtle coloring and Joey offered for me to come back and try a deeper color at no extra cost. This is a very long overdue review as I have been going to Coco Head to see Lucas since May 2016. I have gotten many haircuts (mostly trims as I like long hair) from Lucas, but he is also responsible for taking my virgin-never-before-dyed Asian hair to blonde (platinum/warm/ice varieties) which I have kept doing for the past 2 years. Before my very first bleach session, I had a consultation with Lucas and showed him how blonde I wanted to go and ask him all my questions. He was upfront with how long it would take and was happy to give me all the information I needed for a drastic change. Lucas is incredibly friendly and always checks in with how I am during a haircut or bleach session. He is also meticulous and always goes the extra mile to make sure my hair comes out amazing. Overdue review for Coco Head Hair Studio in Chinatown. I cannot be more happy about my haircut that I got today and in the past. Lucas, the stylist I go to, is the most patient guy ever. I've only gone to this salon three times in the past 2 years and he remembers me despite that (might be because of my hair tbh) I have thick, wavy, unruly hair that requires a lot of time to work with. And getting the right haircut has never been easy for me in the past and it's never cheap so I only go twice a year at most. You'd think getting this style is easily achieved but not with my hair. I've gone to other salons and no one has come close to what Lucas has done. Probably one of the best hair salons I've went to, that knows how to cut asian hair and listens! Cause at most asian hair salons you usually walk out two inches more than what you ask them to do or something completely different from what you wanted..But not at Coco's! It was my first time at the salon and upon arrival my temperature was taken and then seated at the chair with plexiglass in between each chair. I had some ideas of what I wanted to do, but wasn't sure if it would look good on me. I talked to Zhen and he listened and gave suggestions depending on my naturally wavy hair and how I usually air dry my hair. So we decided on a medium cut with curtain bangs. After deciding what to do he gave me a hair wash and we started cutting. He made sure two,three times that the hair length was what I wanted before he started and I cannot express how much I appreciated that! During the appointment he made small talk and gave tips on how to maintain the bangs and products that I should avoid because of my hair type. It was overall a really great and pleasant experience! I would suggest calling and booking appointment ahead of time, because it seems like they are packed with one appointment after another! Came in here for a haircut a couple of months ago. I tend to be very picky about my haircuts and generally want someone who can really cut asian hair, especially mine since it's straight, but slightly wavy, if cut weird. I wanted to get my hair cut shorter and also more layers. Initially, the haircut seemed good but once my hair grew out, I noticed that the layers were a bit strangely cut. The front layers were significantly shorter than the next set, and slightly uneven on both sides. It seemed that there was too much cut at the bottom, but a lot left near the top and back. Maybe this was the look he was going for, but it just didn't work for me. For the price, it was a fine haircut. Lucas is an absolute genius. I have thick, dark, Asian hair - it is always such a challenge to work with. Not for this guy. I came in with the ridiculous idea of wanting to try the highly-coveted silver hairstyle that's in right now, ready to accept its inherent impossibility, and Lucas gave me a big grin and said "Let's make it happen, man!" His haircut skills are excellent, and he's open to any kind of feedback and provides helpful suggestions for hair care, styling, you-name-it simply because he loves sharing the knowledge and wants you to be happy with his work. Most silver hair fades out after as soon as 2-3 weeks - the color is notoriously challenging to keep in the follicles, probably second only to pastel pink in terms of difficulty. It's been over TWO MONTHS since I had my hair colored by Lucas, I've gone in for haircuts since then and we've both marveled at how well it's stayed in place. I could not be happier with my hair color, and with the hair cuts I receive from Lucas. Going to CoCo Head was a wonderful surprise for me, and I don't plan to go anywhere else while I'm still in Boston. My hair was down to the small of my back and I wanted to donate to locks for love. He listened to all my restrictions - I don't use product, I don't blow dry, I have a three-year-old, so there there are days where it's lucky if my hair sees a hairbrush. I also told him about how the hair on the right side of my head flips outward. Lucas was meticulous, and managed to shape my hair in a way that it fell symmetrically. But the big test is always the day after - when I wash and go without blow drying, or styling. It passed the test with flying colors, I am so impressed with how my hair looks, with just me running my fingers through my hair when I got up in the morning! I feel a bit conflicted about my haircut. My hair is very straight, had no layers, and unfortunately, gets flat easily. I looked all over Boston for a salon that knows how to deal with Asian hair, and went in with one goal in mind: make it more voluminous. Lucas (sp?) cut my hair, and seemed knowledgeable and confident working with Asian hair. He was also very friendly, and I felt comfortable during the entire time. Lucas also gave me some nice tips about how to style / blow-dry my hair to give it more volume, especially during winter. I got lots of layers, especially near the crown, which made my hair feel much, much lighter. However, it seems a bit choppy towards the bottom. Maybe I'm not used to how layers look, but I had imagined the layers transition very smoothly so it wouldn't appear to have flat ends at any point. That being said, I'm not super picky with my hair, it'll grow back. Would I visit again? Probably, but I'd explain what I'd want much better than just "layers so it looks less flat." The cost (shampoo + conditioner + cut + blow-dry) was $45. TLDR: enjoyed the overall experience, but not exactly the result. But I'd visit again because I believe in second chances :) read more
