Earnie is the best he's so attentive with his clients. I moved away to Hawaii and he still remembered so much about me and my preferences when I came back to see him There's various parking options around Chinatown including street and garage parking. I have been going to Coco Head Hair studio for years now-- since my college days. Ernie, the owner, is very friendly and extremely meticulous. read more

Coco Head hair studio used to be my go-to hair salon when I still lived in Boston. From Boston to Houston, honestly, I haven't found any hair stylists as good as the ones at Coco head. This time back home, I was able to book an appointment to get a hair cut. Upon arrival, Ernie checked my temperature and check the studio's appointment log to make sure I was on it. Their covid protocols are absolutely on-point and made me feel very safe and comfortable. I noticed every stylist wore double mask and even a face shield when washing clients' hair. When each client leaves, the staffs spray down and clean the area thoroughly (I actually witness this... I was there for almost 3 hours to perm my hair!) Ok... now time for the hair review... a few years ago, I would only let Lucas cut my hair because I found him extremely helpful in guidance. He's always thorough and takes time to explain to me how to style my hair at home. This time around, I wanted a new hair do so I told Ernie on the phone to book me anyone... as long as they're experienced in a middle-part (that's the new style that I wanted, a turn from my always desired side-part). I didn't know that Lucas would also be the one to cut my hair and I'm glad it was him! Lucas examined my hair and recommended the best middle-part hair style. We chit chat for a bit and then he ultimately convinced me to perm my hair - stating that my hair style would benefit greatly from it due to the nature of my hair and head bone structure. And man is he right, I love my perm! (Actually, it's been recommended by many hair style for me to get a perm, I just never trusted anyone enough until this weekend...) So in conclusion, if you're in doubt about this salon, just book and thank yourself later. I only had Lucas cut my hair but it seems like everyone else is amazing! read more

I've been getting my haircut here by Joey for 6+ years, and it's been a great experience every time! I was a little nervous going to a hair salon during COVID but I really needed a haircut. I'm glad I decided to go and would highly recommend it. For COVID, they're doing temperature checks at the door, and everyone has to wear a mask. There's plexiglass between salon seats, and a maximum of 8 people inside (aka 4 stylists + 4 guests). I felt safe the entire time. I have long hair and the haircut is $55 without tip. They also wash your hair before the haircut, which is great! I typically show Joey a picture of the hairstyle I want, and he cuts it in a way that suits my face shape. I also ask a lot of questions on how to style hair, and Joey takes the time to answer them and even demonstrates them for me. He's very patient and knowledgeable about hair. Prior to coming to here, I was never really happy with my haircuts. Then my friend recommended Coco Head, and now I'm afraid to get haircuts anywhere else! Highly recommend getting your haircut here - ask for Joey! read more

Love the undercut I just got from Ernie at Coco! All the hair stylists here are SO great with Asian hair, I never have to worry that they'll try to do something that won't work with my hair texture. For COVID they are doing temperature checks at the door, masks, and plexiglass between customers (with max 8 people allowed in the salon at any time). I went on a weekday and I was the only customer in the salon and felt as safe as you can feel in the midst of a pandemic! read more

I looked at a few different asian-owned hair salons online prior to deciding on coming here and was so happy with my choice! From entering to leaving, my entire experience was overwhelmingly positive. Zhen took the time to listen to what my preferences were and carefully cut my hair with meticulous detail. I appreciated that he didn't rush and checked in with me at various points to make sure that I liked the way it was going. I'll admit my hair is not the most difficult type to cut (medium thickness, long, straight, asian) but he did a very good job. The lady who washed my hair also was so detailed and took her time -- I never felt like they were trying to get this appointment over with quickly. The prices are also very reasonable, which is a plus. I am pleased with my haircut and definitely will be returning when I need another cut! read more

Honestly I would never have thought of coming to a haircut place that charges more than 30$ (my haircut is simple, buzzed around and longer on top) except my mom wanted me to go since we were going to a wedding soon. HOWEVER, It was such a good experience and Joey put so much care and detail into my hair that I have not seen in a long time. He even went to explain why he was doing certain things. It really made my day and was such a great experience! Highly recommend! read more

It's a blessing when you can look at your hair over and over again and think, "Omg. I look good." That's how I feel every time after a haircut at Coco Head Hair. For the past year, I've gotten a long bob cut and maintenance trims with Joey Cheung! All the other stylists totally seem like solid folks, as well. I love how each stylist has his or her own personality and are so detailed and caring towards each of their clients. I've been to Coco Head Hair on Saturday evenings, Weeknights, and Saturday mornings at 9 am and it's always packed- You know, something is going right when you can get young folks to show up for a haircut bright and early on a Sat AM. Right? Medium hair length cuts are $50 & we also have to factor in tip for the team who shampoos our hair/our stylist. So it averages to about $55-65 ish for a cut. Pls feel free to tip this team up more if you're balling- They totally deserve it. The salon is located in a side street in Chinatown. It's next to the corner where Dunkin Donuts is located. It's accessible my MBTA and occasional parking. Parking is hard in Chinatown so I usually try to go on Sundays or early mornings before people crowd the place. And yes, the past year- Coco Head Hair maintained Covid Safety Protocols. Everyone wears a mask. There are plastic glass dividers between each salon chair and every client's temperature is checked before entering. I recommend going to Taiwan Cafe for the szechuan fish dish, Penang (for anything), Liuyishou Hotpot, or the TOP Bread Bakery for taro bread and Portuguese egg tarts. Get the most of your Chinatown visit with good food and important appointments like getting yuuuur hair done. Amen. God bless Boston's Chinatown. lol. With much love, J read more

The first time I went to get my haircut here, I felt like I knew the people there for years. The location was tricky, but Zhen came out and waved so I knew where it was. If you get lost, just call. If you exit Jia Ho using the exit that leads to the alley, not the street, Coco is to the right across the alley. Like you, I resorted to Yelp to find a new salon. Like you, I thought, "Wow. This place has a lot of good ratings. Maybe I should check it out. It's also by so many good restaurants and bakeries....what a win-win situation". I called and booked an appointment with Zhen. 6/5 stars. The work was...incredible as it was meticulous. Very close attention to detail and very artistic in its execution! I had long, dead hair that hasn't seen a salon in a while. Zhen did a fantastic job and gave it much-needed life. I asked if he wanted to take an after photo, and he said he prefers his clients to take a photo of the hair a few days out of the salon in its natural form and send it in themselves! Amazing. I have found my forever salon. Will come back for sure. read more

10/10 experience!! I haven't colored my hair in years and was a bit scared to bleach it but I took the leap and booked an appointment with Earnie. He was so kind and helpful during the 5 hour session. He explained the whole process to me as we were bleaching and toning my hair, and consistently checked in on me to see if I was good. I had very entertaining conversations with him and his wife and they ensured that I was satisfied with the color and trim. Upon entry, my temperature was checked. There are plexiglass barriers between the chairs and only a maximum of 3 other customers besides me were allowed in the salon. I'm very satisfied with my hair results and also am extremely grateful for how kind and talkative the hairstylists were. Not to mention it was extremely affordable! I will definitely recommend this place to my friends. read more

Extremely happy with service! Cut and dyed my hair 2X with Joey and loved it both times. He's the only one who has made red and purple dye last on my black hair. When we did my red hair the first time, it was very subtle coloring and Joey offered for me to come back and try a deeper color at no extra cost. Good Covid precautions, happy with price, and love how patient and detail oriented Joey is! read more

Stylist Zhen was super patient and meticulous with my hair cut. Highly recommend! My hair is always tough to cut because it is super thick and a lot of stylists like to cut corners. However I was quite pleased that Zhen took his time. He also gave some useful tips for caring for bleached dry hair. I thought the studio was professional and that Zhen did a great job. read more

This is a very long overdue review as I have been going to Coco Head to see Lucas since May 2016. I have gotten many haircuts (mostly trims as I like long hair) from Lucas, but he is also responsible for taking my virgin-never-before-dyed Asian hair to blonde (platinum/warm/ice varieties) which I have kept doing for the past 2 years. Before my very first bleach session, I had a consultation with Lucas and showed him how blonde I wanted to go and ask him all my questions. He was upfront with how long it would take and was happy to give me all the information I needed for a drastic change. Lucas is incredibly friendly and always checks in with how I am during a haircut or bleach session. He is also meticulous and always goes the extra mile to make sure my hair comes out amazing. He's honest about how much my hair can handle and what would cause the least damage which I really appreciate. I'm looking forward to testing out new hair colors in the future as I know I'm in good hands with Lucas. read more

I'm so thankful for my haircut with Zhen. He really knew what he was doing and took so much care to understand what I wanted, not making me feel rushed at all. He was so professional as well, making the perfect amount of friendly small talk in my opinion. I was super nervous to get curtain bangs for the first time, but he helped me feel more comfortable and even took the time to explain how to style and care for it. Can't recommend this gem hidden in an alley of Chinatown enough! read more

I just got a hair cut with Joey and it's perfect! He made sure to check that I was okay with everything along the way (length, layers, bangs, etc.) and even made sure that I could easily style it afterwards. I almost felt bad bc the service I got was worth much more than I paid. My husband has also got a few haircuts here and has yet to be disappointed! Re COVID, I was the only client the whole time and they are scheduling appointments to prevent over crowding. I just had to walk up to the door and ask for an availability! Everyone and myself had on a mask and I felt safe! read more

Stylist: Zhen Hairstyle: Effortless short bob ($45) Hair type: massive, smooth, straight but tough - it occasionally gives me splinter, it wouldn't stay curled, and it isn't suitable for short haircuts unless I'm okay with styling it everyday Tldr: He understood my hair type and worked around the challenges to give me what I wanted ----------- I'm always scared of getting a haircut because most stylists do not know what to do with it. Short haircut doesn't work on my because... 1. They layered my hair incorrectly and there would be hair sticking out on top of my head, or 2. I have to style it with a flat iron after Every. Single. Wash. or the end of my hair would flare out. I didn't know that my hair type was the issue until I met my stylist Zhen. He explained me why it wouldn't work and advised against the short bob. However, he figured it out and politely asked for my permission to buzz off hair on the neck area. I was skeptical but I took a leap of faith. ‍ I wasn't convinced that the buzz cut on my neckline is needed until the next day. This is magical I don't need to style it after wash and I can wear a hat without leaving a hat mark! The only downside is that I have to keep coming back to maintain it read more

Overdue review for Coco Head Hair Studio in Chinatown. I cannot be more happy about my haircut that I got today and in the past. Lucas, the stylist I go to, is the most patient guy ever. I've only gone to this salon three times in the past 2 years and he remembers me despite that (might be because of my hair tbh) I have thick, wavy, unruly hair that requires a lot of time to work with. And getting the right haircut has never been easy for me in the past and it's never cheap so I only go twice a year at most. You'd think getting this style is easily achieved but not with my hair. I've gone to other salons and no one has come close to what Lucas has done. I came to him with damaged, poorly cut hair from another salon (which I grew out for 3 months so he could do something with it) and I came out like this. Never changing again. read more

Probably one of the best hair salons I've went to, that knows how to cut asian hair and listens! Cause at most asian hair salons you usually walk out two inches more than what you ask them to do or something completely different from what you wanted..But not at Coco's! It was my first time at the salon and upon arrival my temperature was taken and then seated at the chair with plexiglass in between each chair. I had some ideas of what I wanted to do, but wasn't sure if it would look good on me. I talked to Zhen and he listened and gave suggestions depending on my naturally wavy hair and how I usually air dry my hair. So we decided on a medium cut with curtain bangs. After deciding what to do he gave me a hair wash and we started cutting. He made sure two, three times that the hair length was what I wanted before he started and I cannot express how much I appreciated that! During the appointment he made small talk and gave tips on how to maintain the bangs and products that I should avoid because of my hair type. It was overall a really great and pleasant experience! I would suggest calling and booking appointment ahead of time, because it seems like they are packed with one appointment after another! You know this place is something if they got people coming in on a rainy Sunday as early as 9 AM! read more

I recently had my haircut at Coco Head Hair and it was such a fun experience, and most importantly, I had a really good haircut. I came in the store wanting to thin out my hair having asian thick hair that gets extremely frizzy in the humidity, so most of the time I would always put my hair up to not deal with it. But, Joey showed up for the challenge and made my hair and me beautiful! He added some texture with long layers that would de-frizz my hair and the whole time we were having a fun conversation about life and his work at the salon. Would definitely recommend this to others and I'm coming back soon! read more

It was my first time coming here and i really liked the results!! Zhen was the person who had done my hair, and throughout the whole appointment he tried to make me feel comfortable as well as start small conversations here and there. I had asked for curtain bangs, and Zhen did just that as well as gave me careful instructions on how to style my hair in the future, all without me even having to ask! The atmosphere overall just felt welcoming. Even as i was getting my own hair done, i could see another woman who seems to have gotten a haircut and dye, and her hair looked gorgeous. The experience overall was wonderful, definitely recommend. read more

This is a fantastic salon! I recently had the underside of my hair bleached and dyed baby pink. It was a great experience and I love how it looks. I called the studio to ask for an appointment and texted with stylist Zhen. I was able to set up a 5-hour appointment for the week after and sent photos of my current hair and the style/color I was looking for. I was able to get a price estimate in advance. Zhen gave me tips on how to maintain my hair and its new color. It looks great and the bleaching was done precisely since it is only on the underside of my hair! I have fine, just-below shoulder length hair. My hair still feels healthy after being bleached to light blonde. read more

Schedule in advance, this salon is so popular that they won't accept walk ins unless you've made a reservation! From an Asian male perspective, I think this spot was incredible even if it was slightly pricey. I had my hair cut by Shen and he was very polite and immediately knew the assignment after looking at the picture I showed him. They wash your hair before and after your cut and make adjustments to it to make sure it looks good. Their professionalism and attention to detail earns them a 4.5 star in my book! Important final note: they only accept cash and it was $40 total. read more

Came in here for a haircut a couple of months ago. I tend to be very picky about my haircuts and generally want someone who can really cut asian hair, especially mine since it's straight, but slightly wavy, if cut weird. I wanted to get my hair cut shorter and also more layers. Initially, the haircut seemed good but once my hair grew out, I noticed that the layers were a bit strangely cut. The front layers were significantly shorter than the next set, and slightly uneven on both sides. It seemed that there was too much cut at the bottom, but a lot left near the top and back. Maybe this was the look he was going for, but it just didn't work for me. For the price, it was a fine haircut. I had a fine experience, the hairdressers were friendly, but perhaps not the place for me. Maybe if you decide to stop by, make sure to really specify the type of look you want! read more

This place is awesome! I've been here twice; once to perm my hair, and once to color it. I'm often a little wary of trying new hair salons since not everywhere I've been knows how to color/perm Asian hair. However, Coco Head did a great job, and I LOVE my hair color and perm. The people are very friendly, and they go above and beyond (the stylist who colored my hair had even done some googling for the exact color before I came in). 4/5 stars because they are cash only, but this is a great salon and I will definitely keep coming back! read more

Cash only. Many friends highly recommend Coco Head. Have been here twice. Experiences with Lucas and Joey were very positive. The guy washing my hair was good. I have fine wavy Asian hair. I don't blow dry or comb to leave it au natural. They listened. Lucas and Joey were gentle to not break my delicate hair. They also did not use high heat to damage my hair during the drying process. I let them work their magic. Great job on cutting and styling my hair! I had to hold back my giggles when I saw how beautiful they styled my hair. Will be back! read more

I am obsessed with Earnie and now my hair. He spent a little over three hours with me for a cut, color, and perm. I'm only in Boston for a short time, but I am contemplating making the trip up here every few months just to see Earnie. I could spend the rest of this review talking about precision, rollers, and balayage, but a picture is more concise (see below). I was going to post a before photo, but it's so blah I wasn't even smiling. It looks like a bad acne commercial. Suffice it to say I use to have flat, thin, monotonous black hair. Lucas is an absolute genius. I have thick, dark, Asian hair - it is always such a challenge to work with. Not for this guy. I came in with the ridiculous idea of wanting to try the highly-coveted silver hairstyle that's in right now, ready to accept its inherent impossibility, and Lucas gave me a big grin and said "Let's make it happen, man!" His haircut skills are excellent, and he's open to any kind of feedback and provides helpful suggestions for hair care, styling, you-name-it simply because he loves sharing the knowledge and wants you to be happy with his work. Most silver hair fades out after as soon as 2-3 weeks - the color is notoriously challenging to keep in the follicles, probably second only to pastel pink in terms of difficulty. It's been over TWO MONTHS since I had my hair colored by Lucas, I've gone in for haircuts since then and we've both marveled at how well it's stayed in place. I could not be happier with my hair color, and with the hair cuts I receive from Lucas. Going to CoCo Head was a wonderful surprise for me, and I don't plan to go anywhere else while I'm still in Boston. Call ahead of time, I'm sure the entire team is excellent but I'm biased to Lucas since I've stuck with him since appt 1, and just keep in mind that it is cash only so if you're doing color be prepared to bring a chunk of cash (they'll give you an estimate). read more

I feel a bit conflicted about my haircut. My hair is very straight, had no layers, and unfortunately, gets flat easily. I looked all over Boston for a salon that knows how to deal with Asian hair, and went in with one goal in mind: make it more voluminous. Lucas (sp?) cut my hair, and seemed knowledgeable and confident working with Asian hair. He was also very friendly, and I felt comfortable during the entire time. Lucas also gave me some nice tips about how to style / blow-dry my hair to give it more volume, especially during winter. I got lots of layers, especially near the crown, which made my hair feel much, much lighter. However, it seems a bit choppy towards the bottom. Maybe I'm not used to how layers look, but I had imagined the layers transition very smoothly so it wouldn't appear to have flat ends at any point. That being said, I'm not super picky with my hair, it'll grow back. Would I visit again? Probably, but I'd explain what I'd want much better than just "layers so it looks less flat." The cost (shampoo + conditioner + cut + blow-dry) was $45. TLDR: enjoyed the overall experience, but not exactly the result. But I'd visit again because I believe in second chances :) read more

I seldom do reviews, except when it's something extraordinary or something horrible. I'm happy to report that my haircut from Lucas at Cocohead falls in to the awesome category. My hair was down to the small of my back and I wanted to donate to locks for love. He listened to all my restrictions - I don't use product, I don't blow dry, I have a three-year-old, so there there are days where it's lucky if my hair sees a hairbrush. I also told him about how the hair on the right side of my head flips outward. Lucas was meticulous, and managed to shape my hair in a way that it fell symmetrically. But the big test is always the day after - when I wash and go without blow drying, or styling. It passed the test with flying colors, I am so impressed with how my hair looks, with just me running my fingers through my hair when I got up in the morning! I will definitely be coming back to Lucas again! read more
