I was in the city on a whim and finally decided to go for the perm I'd been wanting, so I called Beautiful Cuts after checking out their website, reviews and Instagram page. I called to make a last minute appointment and Dana graciously invited me to come in so she could assess my hair and recommend the best option for my thick, straight Japanese hair. I was looking for volume with defined curls, and she suggested an airwave perm, which ended up being the perfect choice. I was given a wonderful shampoo and conditioning by a kind employee. Following the wash, Dana gave me a quick trim to add some layers and remove bulk from my one-length cut, and then really got to work. About 2.5 hours later, I walked out of the salon with beautiful, bouncy curls that looked just like the reference photos I brought in. Even better, I was told the perm should last about a year with proper care, which makes it totally worth it. I was also provided some fantastic Japanese hair serum, which was so kind and appreciated! The salon changed ownership last year. I used to have my hair cut by Bitty - disappointed that she is no longer available. I made an appointment with Dana a few days in advance. When I got to the salon, she was in the middle of cutting another patrons' hair. I waited about 10 minutes before the gentleman washed my hair. Dana is very quick, from start to finish I was done in 30 minutes. She styled my hair at the end so I didn't notice the rushed work. After washing my hair, I noticed the jagged layers that don't fall right on one side. I wanted a simple cut with layers... I guess I will be wearing my hair up until it grows out. I had the best experience getting my hair straightened here. I received the Japanese straightening treatment and they were so careful to not damage my hair and did the more labor intensive method of straightening my hair before thinning it so that the end result looks fantastic. I've had traumatic hair experiences in the past so I'm extremely selective with who I let touch my hair. I was looking for someone who has extensive experience cutting thick, straight Asian hair and was also interested in getting a digital perm to round out the ends. Through Yelp, I found Touru! I have nothing but great things to say about him. He knew exactly what I wanted and explained his perspectives as to why something I wanted would fit me or not. He designed the perfect face-framing bangs. He gave me just the right amount of layers so that the curls would stand out but was careful not to thin my hair out too much (since I didn't want that). He was EXTREMELY patient with the perm process - there's an extra step of straightening out the hair after the digital perm since I only wanted an inward curl at the bottom. He answered all of my redundant questions and helped me trust him and not micromanage every part of the process. I got the haircut in June 2022, and it's now almost March 2023 - the end curls are still there and my hair has grown out perfectly! (finally getting around to posting this review and giving Touru the shoutout he deserves!) I will definitely be back and am glad I finally found a stylist who I can trust in Boston. read more

Finally found a hairdresser in Allston to work with my hair! I reserve my salon visits for my go-to hairdresser back home in LA but decided to book an appointment with Touru cause my hair was getting way too unruly. Honestly, i just had such a great time at the store -- Touru is so incredibly friendly, is ridiculously fast and efficient (note the double blow dryer action in the photos), and super thorough. He even squeezed in a color toning session for me that I wasn't able to schedule time for over the initial call! I recently went here for a Wavy Perm + cut. I have medium length hair and very straight and voluminous hair on top. Dana did a great job at achieving the look that I wanted, with friendliness and great customer service I will say. Although I wish the perm stayed more wavy post-haircut. Three weeks out, some part of the perm has slightly resumed back to the straight-ish hair style. I also wished she trimmed more on the back to match the side fade. After being seen by a hairdresser who didn't understand my hair texture, I came to Beautiful Cuts to ask for color and a C-Curl perm, both of which came out so nicely! They understood what I was looking for without me having to explain much. My hair is thick and coarse, but they processed color and left my hair still feeling really healthy. NOTE that Touru is no longer here, he has started Touru Hair Studio! Finally getting around to leaving this review -- tl,dr: experienced hair stylists lead with confidence and not compassion. I felt like I was not treated with care. Even though the lady that cut my hair was clearly comfortable and confident in her ability, it came off as indifference and a blase attitude towards my desired haircut and comfort. She barely looked at the reference photos that I brought, which made me feel not acknowledged or cared for. The hurriedness with which she washed and started cutting made it seem like she already had made assumptions about what kind of haircut I wanted. I needed to pause her in order to walk carefully through my concerns and haircut request, which I'm not sure were fully heard. She was in such a rush to cut my hair. At one point, she called over another man in the store to blow dry my hair, but the heat they used was very hot on my scalp and at one point, the man hit my head with the hair dryer. I have no doubt this was damaging to my hair given the heat, and I also have no doubt that I felt unacknowledged. The language barrier (I don't speak Korean) made it SO DIFFICULT to communicate what I wanted. I asked for long layers, and she said that she would cut medium layers. I emphasized a number of times that I wanted more layers (shorter top layers), but it seems that the message did not get across -- my layers are quite short. I was more offended by how much my hair was thinned. By the end, my hair was so thinned that it no longer feels smooth. When I run my fingers through my hair, I can feel the choppy thinned layers within the hair. Due to the language barrier, she was unable to answer my intermittent questions about why she was thinning my hair so much, and whether she could cut more layers. She didn't use heat protectant before using a flatiron on the highest heat to style my hair after the haircut, which is well-known to be damaging to hair. My ponytail is so much thinner than when I arrived because of how much hair was cut when thinning. I have healthy hair that I work to mainI left and cried about how much hair I lost. I ended up paying ~85 including tip for what felt like a $40-50 haircut. I will not be coming back. read more

I decided to wait a few days before posting a review so that I can see what my straight-curl perm looks like after the products are washed out. I have naturally curly hair that have grown wild over 9 months due to Covid shutdowns. I couldn't travel to Asia to get my hair done professionally at an affordable price, so I decided to sacrifice ~$300 to tame my hair. I ended up spending $350 + $40 tip. The cost hurt, but I am overwhelmingly happy with the result. Touru, my new stylist, knew exactly how to use the perm products while protecting my hair. She did so with ease and wasted no time in between each step. The straightening is done with manual flat ironing, and the curl through digital perm. She also sprayed protectants before applying the different chemicals. Hair perms often damage hair, but I walked out with glossy soft hair that got even better after I rinsed out all of the products. The best part of this process is that you can blow your the curly part of the hair into almost any hair style easily after washing it. A slight hiccup in communicating - I accidentally got a haircut instead of a perm at first. Not sure how that happened, but I would recommend clarifying your intentions before any cuts are made. I think I would have preferred a longer hair style, but I haven't had short hair for a while, so this is nice accidental change :) read more

My perm came out in less than 3 months. Somewhere around 2.5 months. My hair is not curly at all anymore. I paid over $200 for a digital perm and this is what I got. Very frustrating. If you're interested in getting a perm, I suggest going elsewhere. I don't think I will come back here again. read more

Absolutely disastrous. I made an appointment with Touru and I arrived on time but waited more than 40 minutes to get the haircut. Touru was the only person there. Touru was dying a customer's hair, doing a haircut and picking up calls all at the same time. When it's finally my turn, Touru took around 3 minutes to shampoo and condition my hair and there was no head massage like they advertised. I felt pretty okay at this point because I was not in a rush and was okay with waiting, and understood that they might not be providing certain services as they advertised due to COVID. Then I showed Touru photos of the haircut I want, which is an organic textured short haircut, and I ended up getting a generic bob that's completely different from the pictures. What's worse, the cut is very uneven, choppy, and have random trails of uncut hair left at the back (please see the 3 photos attached ). Throughout the entire process, I felt that Touru was hard to communicate with. Touru first sectioned my hair very randomly, and then cut each section to a very random length. When I asked them to cut the front of my hair shorter, Touru refused to do so and said that the current length is better for my face shape when they obviously can't tell what my face look like because I was wearing a mask. I have had many different haircuts and I know what would look good for me and thus insisted on having the front shorter, but Touru kept on telling me that the current length is good and did not cut my hair the way I wanted. When I told them that my haircut looked too round due to the way they were layering, they told me it's because my hair has a big wave at the parts that look round and again did not change it in the way I wanted. It's absurd because I know that my hair is extremely straight. After the haircut was done, they blow dried my hair and then used a steaming hot flat iron to style my hair that eventually made it look super round, even more different then the haircut I wanted, and completely not flattering for my face. When I saw the hot steams rising from my head and felt the hot hair when it touches my face, I asked Touru to lower the temperature of the iron because I was very worried that my scalp and my hair would get burned. I was giving 10% tip when I was paying due to the frustrating experience, lack of advertised service, and the long wait, but then Touru told me to tip around 25%. I refused to do so and explained my reasons. The entire process felt very rushed and frustrating. I felt that Touru was not giving me the haircut that I wanted but rather giving what's most convenient for them. For a price of $65 before tax and tips, I would expect a haircut that at least shows some professionalism. This salon was recommended by a friend who has been here several years ago and it has surely changed over the years. I would recommend to avoid this place. read more

I had very high hopes for this salon as I've had very good experiences here with Masa. Unfortunately he's left and I decided to make an appt with Touru after reading all the good reviews on Yelp. I showed him pictures of what I wanted and he maybe glanced at it for a few seconds and assured me he knew exactly what I wanted. I asked for simple curtain bangs and long layers. He spent a total of 40 mins cutting my hair at weird angles and never once point cutting or paying attention to detail. It all seemed very rushed. In stead of blow drying, he straightened my hair at such a high temperature that it left my hair frazzled , tried to give my hair volume by using the hair straightener at the root of the hair, burning my scalp (literally. I had to ask him to stop doing whatever he was doing). He curled my hair at the ends and I left feeling great because of course hair that is curled will look good, ever if it was cut unevenly. I realized the day after how poorly cut my hair was - choppy, uneven, cut that didn't flow with my hair. After speaking with Bitty on the phone, I came back so that he could fix my hair. I was hesitant on going back, afraid it would look worse. But I wanted to give it another go so that hopefully with a thorough consult an understanding could be reached. I voiced my concerns and he said "it looks pretty already", completely ignoring my dissatisfaction. He went on to say, "because of your hair type it will look uneven" Trust me, I've had great haircuts from other stylists who know how to work my hair type and have never had ends that looked this choppy. Never once apologizing for the bad hair cut, asking me repeatedly what I want when a photo clearly shows my inspiration. He ended up thinning out my hair vs creating more layer/ texturing ends/point cutting Now my hair is in poor shape and I deeply regret getting my hair cut here. When a hair dresser fails to address a customer's concerns and goes with what he knows vs what the customer asked for and proceeds to blame the customer for their hair you know it's an issue. Seems as if I'm not the only one who left dissatisfied. read more

I want to start by saying that I am usually rather nervous about getting haircuts. As a Korean-American man, I've had my fair share of rather terrible haircuts and understand how hard it can be to find a trustworthy place. Add to this the fact that I am new to Boston! This all said, my experience at Beautiful Cuts put my worries to rest and was absolutely ideal. They were able to fit me in at the last minute, were super warm and welcoming, and cut my hair in a way that honored how I looked and what I wanted, resulting in a haircut that was exactly what I was hoping for. It was a very rare accomplishment, and I feel it deserved to be broadcast, which motivated me to write this review (even though I don't often write reviews). How come no one's mentioned ASUKA yet!? I've had the pleasure of receiving a beautiful haircut from her today, and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I recently moved to Boston from LA and could not find a hair stylist that could satisfy my specific needs with my hair until now...Asuka took her time to cut my hair slowly and carefully for about an hour, making sure I was okay with the progress every now and then (all of the other stylists in Boston took less than 20-30 minutes!). She gave me exactly what I wanted - layered yet voluminous LONG hair. I feel like I have more hair than when I walked in. Asuka is super friendly, attentive, and beautiful both inside and out! You can definitely trust her with your precious locks. :) Also, the prices here are ridiculously reasonable, especially for the type of services they provide. Got my annual Japanese perm with Touru. I normally get it with Masa but he left probably due to COVID. Touro did a great job but there were some things that put me off. -he didn't put treatment in intervals like most people do; he put treatment on once I believe (normally takes 3-4 hours but it took 2.5 hours roughly this time) -It costed $320 for the perm so it was a bit pricier than what Masa used to charge -Touru asked for more tip. "This is not 15%, I need more." Granted this is during a pandemic and I didn't know I needed to tip more than $40. I asked how much more he needed and he said $10. So I had to additionally charge another tip. It was weird and rude. read more

She took her time with my hair and offered to cut an inch and let me see if I wanted to go shorter. I've come here now three or four times and had my hair cut by Fumiko every time - she's absolutely excellent! There are lockers that you can put your belongings in while they cut your hair, which is nice. Fumiko starts off with washing your hair and then gives you a short massage for your head and neck. For the haircut, it's great to have someone who knows how to cut and style Asian hair - I've gone to other hair dressers before for two or three times the price who haven't done as good a job with shaping my thin hair so it doesn't always look completely flat. I simply describe or show a photo of what I'm thinking of to Fumiko in the beginning and she seems to know what to do. Prices are very reasonable and I would 100% recommend this place if you're looking for someone to cut Asian hair! read more

Today I had my haircut by Touru and could not be happier with the final results! I do the bare minimum with my hair, when I get it cut back at home (NY) I love my hairdresser but when I say I want x inches off and keep it simple with some style they always forget the latter. Touru knew exactly how to shape my face which was what I've needed for so long!! I've also have always gotten my hair layered in the past and one would not be able to tell, but today it's apparent and gorgeous. 3 reasons why I love this place: they know what it means to layer my hair, chit chat is cut to a minimum between me and the hair stylist, and the staff is very friendly. The old grandpa in charge is really sweet, greets, and smiles all the time. They have Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Japanese etc. speaking hair stylists so it's very much internationalized for people who prefer speaking to a stylist in their home language. I love their magazines available...abundant in hairstyles fit for straight, Asian hair and they're modern. Managed to find a picture of a cut I like while waiting. Beats having to be vague. Although the shop has a retro look and isn't very fancy, it's enough for me as long as they can get the cut I like done. ~30-35 for hair wash, cut, and blowdry is a great deal. This place definitely knows the correct way to layer hair vs. hair cuttery who just chopped my hair straight into 2-3 layers without the jaggedy end effect I like!! My hair stylist that I've been going to for 25 years recently moved to New York. I needed another staple salon. Reviews look great on yelp so I tried it out. I needed a last min appointment so I couldn't book with the person I wanted. They referred Linda to me and she only works once a week, which I didn't find out until the end of my haircut. I'm not fully satisfied because I asked for layers and she did not give me the layers I wanted and she kept thinning my hair. However, I did not ask to thin my hair. She was nice, but she also rushed my hair the min her next appointment came in.. That being said, I came home to see my hair. And it came out very pretty. The back is shaped round like I wanted. Btw, my hair is very thick and very long. My hair isn't as heavy as it used to be and it looks pretty in the front and back, I'm more pleased than when I finished and walked out the salon. I'm going to give this place another try with Bitty, the korean lady. So this review will be updated once I go back. It's hard to find places where they know how to touch thick Asian hair. She asked some lifestyle related questions and gave her suggestions on haircuts before we got started, which I appreciate. I have very thick hair. I am talking about thick southeast Asian hair. I have gone to many places and only Touru is able to give me a good layer without having my hair flying in different directions. $55 + tip is definitely reasonable for his technique. She makes my monthly haircut something to look forward to, and I've never been disappointed. OMG!! Love Love my new hair cut!! I've always been a bit afraid of getting bangs, but Toru@Beautiful Cuts helped me overcome my anxiety- and got me the perfect haircut!! He is so talented and intuitive, once I explained that I perform a lot on stage, he helped create the best style for me- this layered, he called it "shaggy" hair cut!!
