Came in for a haircut with Geraldine and left happy as a clam! All the staff was so kind and the salon was super busy even on a Tuesday which is a great sign for me. Very clean space so it was a relaxing environment. Always appreciate being offered drinks as well. I love HC studio and have been a regular since 2018 or so but never felt compelled to write a review until my last appointment with Elliott! Elliott is one of the newer stylists, and gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had! Not only did I end up with a low maintenance but very flattering cut and color, it was also a very calming and soothing visit that had me totally blissed out. Thank you Skyler for a great cut and dry! I wish I had taken "before" pictures but I wasn't expecting the difference to be so dramatic. I had a couple layers but my bangs had been grown out for over a year because I was undecided on what I wanted done with them. I also have naturally curly hair with a lot of frizz and shapeless volume. She did a great job achieving the V shape I had envisioned and I'm excited to see how it looks when I wear it curly. I just had my first haircut there with Lila and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. Friendly, helpful staff and bright airy calm space. My hair was in a feral state and not been cut for at least 4 months, but Lila my stylist took it in stride and gave me a terrific, sophisticated haircut. I came in a mess. Scraggly , dry, brittle and mysteriously uneven hair. No haircut since covid and yet my hair was shorter than my last cut from Nov '19. I adamantly told Samantha Don't cut it TOO short! She understood, though she admitted she wanted to cut more due to the dryness and uneven layers. But she came up with a different game plan than the usual wash, cut, dry. Firstly, the cut so she'd be able to see any more craziness my hair could throw at her, then the wash (and very deep condition) and blow dry. I was on board. The interesting thing that happened during this haircut session wasn't just a great, healthy and stylish cut, but also something deeper. She was curious as to WHY my hair was in the state it was. She asked a few questions, then asked if I'm gentle with my hair, which she referred to my hair as "Her." I thought about it and realized I'm downright brutal with my hair ...and myself. She got me thinking about how I treat my hair and myself and I had the epiphany in that chair that I'm pretty rough with my hair (obsessive, nervous twisting, pulling, tugging). And with myself in an emotional way. Of course she probably didn't mean to provoke any existential questions, but with her gentleness, kindness and patience it just surfaced for me. Allison asked me what I was looking to have done and did a great job cutting it exactly how I imagined I wanted it to turn out. She was super sweet checking to make sure the water temp and my position was comfortable during the hair washing. She checked to make sure what I was comfortable in the seat as well! I recently booked for two appointments and then upon arrival, was told that those two appointments were scheduled for next week when in actuality, the person on the phone assured me that they were for this coming friday. This is a great place! Every interaction I've had at this salon -- whether it's making an appointment, needing to reschedule, returning a product I wasn't thrilled with, and of course my hair care with Shannon -- all of it has gone seamlessly and everyone has been incredibly pleasant. The environment is relaxed and easy... the only constructive criticism I would give is that the areas to sit while you're waiting either for service or for color to set, are not as comfortable and inviting as the rest of the salon. I love this place! I've been going for a year now. I started my journey when I wanted to go from dyed red to blonde, not an easy task. It took about 4 visits to get where I really wanted. I have naturally medium brown hair so it was decided that a balayage with shadow roots was a natural enough looking route to go. A year later, I have kept up my balayage and get compliments on it all the time. People even think its my natural color sometimes! I started with Meghan for color and Melinda for cut, sadly neither of whom are there anymore. However everyone who works here is a rockstar and I've also worked with Shannon and Lindsey. Lindsey is now my go-to girl for cut and color. This place is also awesome because they serve you mixed drinks and wine while you're there (they also have coffee and tea). The shampoo girls are great as well, the head massages while you're getting rinsed are where it's at. My favorite salon in Boston! read more

I've been here 3 times in the past year. I have thick, long, and tons of Asian hair. I got a half head caramel balayage on my virgin hair with Megan last summer. She is amazing!!!!!!! She is so well educated in her colorist craft. She knew exactly what she was doing and what would look best for me. I also got a hair cut with Melinda. She was super nice and made my hair blend and flow like never before. And I most recently just did a full head cooler caramel balayage with Megan in preparation for this coming spring/summer. Again, the most amazing results and I am so so happy with my hair! Besides Megan and Melinda, everyone else is super sweet too. The apprentices are great and give the best scalp massages. They're always offering beverages, magazines, etc. People are always checking in with you and so you never feel forgotten. Especially since they get busy (even on Friday nights!) you feel that they are still attentive to you. If they can't fit you in for a blow dry after, they hook you up with a blow dryer, brushes, and heat protectant so that you can dry it in their clean and tidy bathrooms. Prices are also very reasonable and it's just an overall great experience. Worth it. I don't think I'll ever go anywhere else for my hair!! read more

I came here for a hair color, moisturizing treatment and blow out. 10 out of 10 service. They use the best of the best hair products for your hair when shampooing and styling (Keratese). They offer the best products for sale that are really life changing for your hair. The entire salon staff is so extremely nice and accommodating. They immediately offer you wine, coffee, tea (so many awesome flavors) and their signature drink of the month. Everyone is so so so nice- the shampoo girls, the front desk girls, the stylist, the other customers it's just such a great atmosphere. HOLY SH*T. I have finally found a salon I will be returning to. I called to schedule a consultation for a color and was able to get in with Susan due to a cancellation. My hair had been recently massacred at a South End salon, and I needed to have major color correction. Susan put me at ease, made sure she understood what I was asking for by repeating it back to me, and was even honest about how much we could do to my hair given the recent damage and time constraints. I appreciated it so much. Even though my hair is still unfinished, it looks SO much better. I can't wait to complete the process. ALSO. The scalp massage I received while being shampoo'd and receiving a treatment was worth it's weight in gold. I would go back for the shampoo experience alone. read more

Melinda is the only person I will pay to cut my hair. Recently I asked her for a trim before I went to a fancy conference and everyone was like OMG YOUR HAIR IS AMAZING and either handed me (Ulysses S.) Grants on the spot or invited me to fly to bigger cities to talk srs shop. I couldn't have done this without her. The haircut she gave me did more than make me feel like a better person; it actually made me a better person. I became even nicer to my parents and I suddenly had the ability to calculate natural logarithms in my head. My biceps swelled and I grew a couple inches, too. If I were to stumble into wealth I would buy Melinda a house next to mine so I could always have the freshest kickin'-est haircuts. I've gone to HC studio about three times already within the last 6 months and each visit I'm blown away by the professionalism of their staff from front desk to shampoo support to stylist. Environment is modern and hip taking on a minimalist feel. I've been seeing Lila and I appreciate that she takes the time to listen to exactly how I'd like my hair to be cut. She gives great feedback with how your cut will be, giving you the play-by-play throughout your appointment. She takes into account hair texture and face shape as well, all while exchanging life stories to get to know you!! **Totally irrelevant, but I had an anxiety attack on the green line headed to the studio. The front desk personnel were quick to help me get settled by filling a nice glass of lemon water and letting me take as long as I needed to collect myself in the restroom. 'Twas a no judgement zone and they completely handled this frantic situation perfectly. read more

Finding an excellent stylist is no easy feat. Like some other reviewers, I have recently made Boston my home. My daily rides to work offered me a glimpse at the outside of the HC Studio shop which is completely adorable, and after deciding I need some stylistic change in my life I called and booked an appointment with Kerri. When I walked in I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted, but I knew my naturally blonde locks needed reinvention. Kerri and I talked about color choices and after a few layers of color my hair is now a fantastic shade of red. It takes talent to speak to a person and translate their loosely articulated hair style request into an expert vision, and Kerri has this talent. I felt welcomed and comfortable during my time in the studio, and I feel great about my fantastic new cut and color. Be prepared to part with some hard earned cash here, as this is not a studio for the bargain-hunter. Tips for stylists are cash only, though the rest of your payment can be with a card. The cut and color are fairly-priced though, and I saw many women come in during what seemed to be their lunch break for simply for a shampoo and scalp massage. I know I'll be setting aside some dinero to keep up my fantastic new look, and I'll definitely be coming back to visit Kerri! I'm so glad I decided to come here and I would recommend this studio to anyone whether you are looking for an edgy change, or simple upkeep. read more

How has no one yelped about Marina yet?!?! She's awesome! I work right around the corner from HC studio and have gone a few times for a quick bang trim. Each time I've gone I liked the finished product, so I thought I would return for a full haircut. I have been growing my hair out for quite a while (and coloring it - MYSELF), and knew I needed a little more than just a trim. I took the risk and called to make an appointment, taking whoever was available - this time it was Marina. She was super friendly right away, asking me exactly what I wanted done, and explaining to me what she thought might look nice and how much I should get cut. Since I hadn't had a hair cut in a while, and I wasn't sure what I even wanted, she made suggestions and told me she'd give me a cute cut with a lot of "movement." After taking a little bit off the bottom, I still wasn't sure if I had gotten to the length I wanted, so she happily trimmed a bit more (I've had stylists, at times, get annoyed because it takes "more time" to do once they think they've cut your hair to the length you'd asked....). My biggest worry was my side bangs. I'm SUPER picky about them and I've had HACK JOBS before, but she cut them perfectly and showed me exactly how to blow dry them to make them look the way I've been so desperately trying to make them look, myself. I also explained to Marina that I color my hair myself and I was worried about the damage. She told me a lot of tricks as far as what to do when coloring it myself (instead of pushing me to get it done professionally), and suggested some great products that I should try. She used them on me, leaving my hair feeling super soft, silky and weightless. Though I didn't buy them at the time, I plan to return because I actually really trust what she told me. I paid $39 for an AMAZING cut....I felt SUPER comfortable with her right off the bat, and left in time to get back to work at the end of my lunch break, absolutely loving my new cut. I used to be a very ugly duckling-- more often mistaken for a mass of undegraded plastic entangled in some skanky seaweed than not. With a LOT of time and makeup I blossomed into something recognizably female and human. Still, I get crazy self-conscious going to get my hair, nails, and face done. But all the stylists and the clientele and the atmosphere were totally chill despite the fashion runway interior! Despite the hustle and bustle, everyone was very friendly and easy going. I got one of the best cuts of my life here! It was a perfect haircut. I got seen right away, no one tried to sell me anything, it was a very thorough cut and style and I was out pretty quickly. My stylist was pretty pricy at $70+, but she was worth the efficiency and the expertise. She knew exactly what I wanted and it came out better than I thought it would and those experiences are so rare in life. read more

Yes, David came back to Boston and to Judy Jetson's, but not soon enough, because I had already found HC Studio and they're a lot more convenient now that I don't live in Cambridge Anymore. Melinda cut my hair, and did a fabulous job doing it. Plus, I had a great chat about vegan baking with her. Meanwhile, while Desiree did a great job on my spouse's hair, she also proceeded to ask every lesbian-stereotype-question you can imagine, clearly not really all that down with the glbt. Ah well. She may switch to Melinda next time, or try someone new. But Desiree did do a fine job on her hair, just didn't do a great job making her feel comfortable. read more

My recent move garnered me a "welcome neighbor" coupon in the mail, so when my hair situation got desperate enough (the usual requirement before I actually take action), I dug out the coupon and scheduled a haircut. Fast forward a few days, and I showed up for my appointment to find a salon that is bright, chic, and clean. I was greeted by a cheerful girl asking if she could get me a drink. I assumed that meant tea or water, but no, she offered an assortment of wines and a specialty cocktail!! It was Friday evening, so of course I went for the cocktail, a tequila sunrise sort of thing. 3 stars are pretty much guaranteed at this point! My haircut was with Michelle, who was patient when I didn't know exactly what I wanted, and gave honest feedback to (i.e., nixed) my idea to cut as short as I was considering. My hair is curly yet very fine, and she knew what to do with it. My usual haircut is shoulder length, center part, all one length, with a bit of face framing, so not terribly complex, but you'd be surprised how many stylists can't get the sides even. Michelle got it right, and then she blow dried my hair straight, which held for 2 days! There's always some upselling at salons (coloring, products, etc.), but it wasn't too aggressive. I really, really, really do not like getting my haircut. I had a bad experience at another Brookline salon, so after reading good reviews on here, I decided to try out HC Studio. First off, it's convenient. Right off the Brookline VIllage t-stop. Secondly, it's adorable inside. It's a very cute salon without feeling pretentious. Nice open layout. I had an appointment with Megan and showed up a few minutes early. The receptionist was lovely and offered me a beverage (coffee, water, etc.) and within minutes I was getting my hair shampooed. I must say, if you're ever slightly hungover (like I often am on a Saturday afternoon) then go get your hair professionally washed. Scalp massage, temple massage, I was in heaven. Megan listened to exactly what I wanted and asked the right questions and did a fast but precise cut on my hair while keeping a good amount of length, like I requested. She blew it out straight, which I appreciated, but I kind of wanted to see it styled in a way I normally wear it, which is natural waves. It took me a few days to figure out how to work with the new cut. Overall, Megan was very friendly and easy to talk to. I would definitely go back. It's a little more than I like to pay for my haircuts, but since I only get it cut a few times a year, I don't mind the price. read more

First off, let me just say that I was blown away by this place. I had the absolute best hair-cutting experience ever, and everything went off with absolutely no problems. I have very long and thick hair, and I'm a wimp, so I rarely take the time to get it cut until it is completely overwhelming and I'm ready to hack it off with a pair of kitchen scissors. I used to pass HC Studio on my way to work, and when I finallllly decided to get my haircut, I decided to try them out. I made my appointment by walking in randomly one night, and the staff was so courteous and friendly. The girl at the counter suggested that I get my hair done by Kerri, and raved about how great she was at cutting hair. Although, I was slightly skeptical about the fact that Kerri is considered to be one of their "junior" stylists, I decided to make an appointment with her anyway. When I showed up for my appointment I was greeted promptly, offered a beverage, and given a little package of coupons to welcome me. I didn't wait longer than 3 minutes for Kerri to come out and greet me. She understood exactly what I was looking for and got right to work. I was slightly worried that it seemed to take her no time at all to finish cutting, but I was thrilled when she was done styling my hair. It was perfect! Usually I have to go to the car and rearrange my hair to try to make it look like I'd want it to, but I didn't have that problem this time. I have been in Boston for over a year now, and I am extremely disappointed that I just started going here now. I really like this place a lot. I've been here twice and have had a great experience both times. It is really beautiful inside and very well run. They always offer me a beverage when I check in, although they never offer me the wine...I really wish they would, since I feel embarrassed/like a total alcoholic asking specifically for wine, especially at 1:00 in the afternoon, but it just sounds like a unique experience, so I'd really like to try! I went in yesterday and got my hair cut by Kerri, who is apparently a more junior stylist, but I think she did a better job than the cut I got from a senior stylist before (that is another thing- they have a sliding scale by stylist expertise, which I really appreciate, cause otherwise I'm not sure I could afford this place). She really listened to what I was asking for, especially about the bangs which I know I wasn't exactly articulate about describing (I think there may have been hand gestures and/or sound effects involved...), but she totally nailed it anyway. Mostly because she forgot about me half way through my appointment, and took another client! My hair cut was, okay (wasn't in love with it). Melinda! Melinda! Melinda! I live in Brooklyn but travel to Boston every time I need a hair cut just to get her to cut it. I don't let anyone else touch my hair. The lady has a gift and I trust her implicitly. I don't even need to give her much guidance and she always gives me an incredibly hip cut that suits my face and my look. People always ask where I get my hair did and two of my close friends see her now and love her as much as I do. I recently moved to Boston and found myself in desperate need of a local stylist. I rock a rather short trendy haircut that requires a ton of maintenance and a stylist with the knowledge on how to cut one well. So a few weeks back I took a chance when a friend suggested that I make an appointment with Kerrie and I couldn't have been more pleased with the results (or all the compliments I've been receiving!) At times I am probably a stylist's worst nightmare. In addition to expecting great results I constantly desire that fresh new cut or drastic change and with short hair the options or changes can feel limited. Kerrie was very helpful in suggesting that I add in some blocks of color (I chose purple) into my dark brown hair that could easily be hidden with a change of my part if needed. It was just what I needed to spruce up my hair! Typically, I end up leaving a new salon either not impressed by the service or disappointed with the atmosphere and at HC Studio I was impressed. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, the decor was top notch, and my hair came out fantastic! Kerrie was able to follow through with a great cut and recommend a color change that was both trendy enough for my friends and yet still appropriate enough for work. Just had my first visit here. The staff are so warm and welcoming, it's easy to see that they have amazing customer service. I haven't really found a salon that I'm regular at in Boston because I usually get them in my hometown. The last time, I had this great, edgy short haircut which I loved, but after 4 months abroad and no hair cut during that time, my hair has grown into a nasty mess. You know what I'm talking about. Dead ends, no shape, etc, etc. I booked an appt with Kerri, and explained that I'm looking to go long again but in the meantime I need a great cut that will allow me to grow it out. She gave me a great cut with some lovely face-framing layers that is easy to maintain and will grow out well. She listened to what I wanted and did an even better job executing it! I'm not a huge talker at salons, and she didn't make it awkward so props for that, too. I love the space, the service, and all of the customers leaving after their appts looked great and were happy, so I get the feeling ALL of the stylists are great, not just one or two good ones.
