Augusto's Hair Salon

5.0(4 reviews)

Augusto is a skilled professional who gives you the best of both worlds; vision for a cut that is…read moresuitable to you, and respect for your wishes. He manages to blend these two sometimes divergent factors to create a gorgeous and manageable look FOR ANYONE. Case in point; I first heard of Augusto when at a restaurant I saw a woman in her early 20's whose hair was so stunning and flattering I just had to ask who her stylist was. She mentioned Augusto. Still leery of venturing out (what if this girls hair was a one-off? What if he gave the same exact haircut to every girl regardless of any other factor? What if my unruly hair is too much for this virtuoso to handle?) I did not call or make an appointment, just a mental note. Then, some time later, I met a woman in her mid 50's who had a completely different but equally flattering look. She happened to volunteer in conversation that she was a long time devotee of this Augusto that was recommended to me before. What? This as-yet-unknown-to-me man was able to cut two completely different hair styles for two completely different lengths and types of hair on women from two completely different generations, and pull off a striking look for both?? I was sold! As someone who knows relatively little about hair I am able to give him a very vague idea of what I have in mind and he inevitably will come up with something simply PERFECT. I have very thick, wavy, course hair which I have been told is a challenge to cut. Well, I know from personal experience that it is definitely a challenge to style!! Augusto changes all that. Every time I leave his chair I manage to feel gorgeous, with a cut that I am very happy with. Apparently I don't only feel gorgeous but also look that way, because I have been so many times complimented on my hair I have had to recommend so many people. Better still, I can always style the cut easily!! It's only a bonus that Augusto, through his professionalism and charisma, manages to make a friend of every client. He is friendly in a very unobtrusive way. Several very fun and interesting people wander into his shop, some of them for their hair appointment and others simply to stop by and say hello to Augusto and all of his guests. He will take his time on your hair and his painstaking attention to detail is seen in the results. You may have to wait a few moments, but it is one hundred percent worth it. I don't mind waiting as I know when the scissors hit my hair, the job will never be rushed. With my hair type, to be able to find a stylist who listens to your preferences, is able to find a cut that is very flattering for you within your desires, and makes it manageable for a novice to recreate at home on a daily basis, has proved a lifelong impossibility until now. Augusto is the needle in the haystack!!

As such, I hadn't gotten my hair cut in months (like, 8 months) prior to this appointment. I got my hair cut with Candace, and she looked at my hair dry and asked me around where I wanted it to hit afterwards, which I really appreciated with curls. She was able to blow dry it straight afterwards, and I was scared it was going to be too short once it dried curly. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised! It might have been 0.5-1 inch shorter than I anticipated, but it looked great! I had to come back the last time so Candice could fix my cut, clearly annoyed, and left me with a choppy bang-like piece that I ended up fixing elsewhere. Then this last visit I showed her a photo of what I wanted - a very blunt shoulder length bob. Pretty simple. I was there 20 minutes tops and wasn't shown the back with a mirror, and when I got home and looked with my own mirror, I found the cut was uneven, angled, and longer at the front. Sure it looked nice after being blow dried, and I typically play around with my hair afterwards to to be sure the cut flows nicely, but I felt uncomfortably rushed with her standing at the register waiting for me. The floor should also be swept between each client. That was definitely my last visit there.

The salon is conveniently located, well priced, and Trista was delightful. My hair was in dire need of a cut and styling. I called to make a last minute appointment and Dana graciously invited me to come in so she could assess my hair and recommend the best option for my thick, straight Japanese hair. However, I really want a hair cut, so I decided to do a hair adventure where I would go to a new place with a new stylist to try my luck in the Allston/Boston area. I believe my hair stylist was called Kevin or Devin? I heard them call his name. A young dude with glasses. I told him I just want a bit shorter but not too short, I want my hair to cover my ear. But the FIRST cut was on the side all the way to reveal my ear... I told him right away it was too short, but I know its too late... So I told him just cut what you think is the best that would make me look good. (Normally before your first cut you would ask or you start from cutting a bit and see if its too short. If it is too long, you can fix it, but too short you can't. That is why I was shock his first cut was all the way to reveal my ear...) My face is on the wider side and he cut in a style that reveal my fat face... then I realize the previous customer has kinda similar hair cut and I begin to suspect he only know that one style and no matter who it is he cut everyone's hair like that. Another thing was he didnt use the mirror to show me the side or back and said all set... As for the assistant. I can feel that her basic washing skill is solid, but she didnt put conditioner in my hair, shampoo only. Also there are not much a massage for the head. Typically first wash, shampoo, after cut, second wash with conditioner and some light massage. I am kinda disapointed, and now make my face bigger... Nonetheless, I can always wear a hat. Their website looks good and this place do got the potential. Lastly when I tip the stylist, he didnt even said thank you. He just looked at me blankly and it was kinda embarrassed. The assistance do say thank you. The stylist may need to work on smoother soft skill, but when he was cutting my hair at least it was comfortable. I just hope he could communicate and listen more and analyze the customer's face shape and cut a little bit off first, not first cut all the way especially I already told him I want to cover the ear and pointed the length I want at my ear; yet he still one cut all the way... and it was the first cut... sigh. (if you guys wondering what kinda of hair style he gave me, check out their men's photo, it looks similar to that, side shave off and hair on the top. But I said don't reveal my ear and he reveal it 100%... that is like the only hard core rule I have for him and his first cut violate that rule...)
