Meh. Got an okay cut from Savvy last week. I was inspired to check them out thanks to the range of positive Yelp reviews, as well as the proximity to my house. The bright blue façade was kind of cool too. My cut was with Joanna, and her heart was definitely in the right place. She asked me the typical life questions, and also what I wanted to do with my hair. It's not a bad cut, but it's lacking the wow-factor I thought I'd conveyed in my explanation of the fabulousness I wanted. Also, she cut my bangs too short, which is a pet peeve of mine and also something I explicitly said. The price was nice ($38 for a cut and blow dry), but I didn't love her styling efforts or the waxy goo she put in my hair. Sigh. Let me preface this review by saying that as an African-American woman, my hair is VERY important to me. I have relaxed hair that I get permanently straightened once a month, so I am always looking for an affordable hair salon that can get the job done. Savvy Hair design seemed to fit the bill when they quoted me at $30 for a perm and blow dry, but the experience that I had there is probably the worst experience I've ever had at a hair salon. Danielle was VERY nice and very personable but it took over an hour for her to apply the chemical relaxer to my head, and anyone who gets chemical relaxers knows that when you leave it on for over 35 min it BURNS YOUR SCALP. So, I politely asked her to wash it out and she did , but I was left with a few scabs on my scalp from the burning. Then, she told me that the perm didn't even STRAIGHTEN my hair! I was a little frustrated, not with her, but with the situation and with the fact that I cannot seem to find a hair salon in the area that can do African-American hair properly. The blow dry was ok, she left the roots a little wet which, again, doesn't really work for African-American hair, but whatever. Moral of the Story- If you are an African-American woman looking to get a relaxer done here, BRING YOUR OWN PRODUCT or go somewhere else. read more

When I made my appointment at Savvy I was in desperate need of a haircut, but hesitate for I didn't want to sit through an hour long family picture session (an annual event during the thanksgiving holiday) with a newly heinous haircut. But, I decided to bite the bullet and go for it, I mean any cut couldn't be as bad as my infamous "Ringo Starr" 'do... Anyway, that's a story for another time. Back to Savvy... My appointment with Helen was everything I could have asked for and more. Helen was real, not like some stylists out there who know what's best for you. She took time to (actually) listen to what I wanted, needed and by the miracle of god made it happen. I also appreciated that I wasn't treated like just another potential sale -- no relentless product pushing here. The only downside, if there's one, is that they don't accept plastic, so debit- card queens and kings either have to stop at the ATM beforehand or dust off their checkbooks. So here's the bottom line: if you want a great cut, that looks better than one from Newbury without the Newbury price, visit Helen at Savvy. I'm happy that I did; I now have a fabulous 'do and the confidence to work that family picture! I'm going to have to take back what I said before, because I went here again for just a trim and came down with Weak Bang Syndrome after doing really well and being in remission for months. I'm not sure what happened, but all of a sudden... my bangs were chopped WAY too short in one fell swoop and I was sent on my way. Crying inside. This place really is hit or miss, and I have to say... for me, that's just not good enough. I need to know that my bangs are always going to be in good hands, not just some of the time. read more

I just got back from getting my hair cut by Helen and cannot stop smiling, I'm so happy with it. I chose Savvy based on Kristin C.'s review and the fact that they're super close to my house. I was really happy when I called to see if they had any appointments available for today and got one with Helen. Helen is fantastic. She put up with me being sort of clueless about what I wanted to do with my extra-long hair and listened to all of my weirdo rambling on about how I hate high-maintenance hair and was sick of having long hair I didn't know what to do with. I knew I wanted to chop most of it off, but didn't have a clear picture of what I wanted it to look like when it was done. She was very in to giving me something I would be happy with and made several tweaks and adjustments at the end that made it turn out better than I was expecting. Overall I think Helen's attitude and style would be perfect for anyone else who, like me, is over 30 but not willing to succumb to Soccer Mom hair. Thanks Helen! read more

First time. Never again. Based on Yelp reviews, wanted someone called Helen. Called and requested Helen, mentioned her name over and over again, to a person who doesn't speak English all that well, even though she's been in the country for 20 years. Came in. Found it was someone named Carolina who apparently refused to give me an appointment for Helen or tell me if she was even there. She wanted the appointment, obviously. Nice person but .....Went in with shoulder length (silver) hair and TWO photos (and we found a similar shot in her book of cuts!!) of a cut showing hair 3-4 inches in length, very wispy and fun. Came out with the fucking Jamie Lee Curtis shearing - I call it the old lady Pearls and Champagne cut. I HATE it when stylists see grey hair and think we all want to look like rich, snotty, corporate Republicans. I'm a 'post-punk' design professional who doesn't want or need to look either rich or conservative. Carolina ruined my hair - it will take 8 months for it to grow out to a decent length and I'm going to have to wear a bandana for the rest of the summer. I'm so freakin' angry ... beyond imagining that someone could take a medium length short hair cut inspiration and not be able to stop herself from cutting every last bit of hair off. I needed a change for my hair and Savvy is close to my house. After reading the reviews about Helen, I decided to call. Tara answered the phone and just happened to have an opening that day so I decided to try her - she just switched shops and has been with Savvy for about a month now. I am soo happy that Tara did my hair. I walked in with my hair a mess and walked out with a fantastic color and cut. The place is really cute and relaxing. And I didn't feel like I was rushed in and out of the chair like other places. This morning I was able to style it with no problem - which almost never happens. Besides Tara being a great stylist, the second best thing was the bill. A cut and color for $65! I am sure it depends on the length of hair (mine is short) and the type of processing - but I was paying almost twice that price where I was going before. I've been looking for a Salon and Hair Dresser since I moved to Boston 2 years ago. I've tried 4 or 5 different places and different stylists and have never been fully satisfied enough to choose one. They were either: too expensive and snooty, or the haircut was just sub-par and "eh". Last night I got a cut by Richard at Savvy Hair design and was sooooo pleased with the entire experience: 1. Richard was a hair cutting professional - we talked about my hair the entire time. Not the weather, not sports, not where I live, what I do for a living, blah blah blah. No chit-chat or small talk - just hair.....MY hair. It was the longest and most in depth discussion about my hair that I've ever had. How novel and wonderful - a hairdresser that is truly interested in your hair!!! I learned so much from him and he was full of useful information and tips. 2. The Cut was awesome. Richard clearly took interest in what I was looking for and also added his expertise to make a few suggestions - which I took, and in the end it came out amazing! My flat thin long hair came out fluffy, healthy, and stylish! 3. The price was right! $45 for a hour long pampering - consultation, wash, cut, style, and tons of great hair advice. Can't beat that. I will definitely make Savvy Hair Design my permanent Hair Salon and Richard will be my Hair Guru! read more

Ladies and gentlemen, listen up! If you are looking for impeccable results, great atmosphere and affordable prices, this is your place. I'm a newbie to Boston, recently transplanted from Savannah, Georgia. My sincere thanks to you Yelpers for the putting a girl on the right track! I dialed Savvy and spoke with Joanna who was very sweet and accomodating. She penciled me in for a color, cut and blow dry the next day with Danielle. As I walked in, I was greeted by the stylists who seemed really friendly. There was music playing overhead at the perfect level and a flat screen TV with captions. The magazine racks were filled with the latest and greatest and contained a collection that would satisfy even the most finicky. Danielle talked with me, reviewed the color formula (burgundy red) given to me by my former Savannah stylist and asked what I wanted. She looked at my hair, brushed through it and we agreed that she'd match the color using the formula, keep the length (mid way down my back) and cut some long layers in the front. The color took a while to apply but only because my hair is crazy thick and long. Danielle was super attentive and the energy there was great, very comfortable. Not one ounce of pretention or snootiness. The haircut was brilliant!!! Truly the best one I've ever had. And she matched the color perfectly. The price was MORE than fair for the work involved (3 hours--I have a ton of hair) and for making me feel like a celeb when I walked out. I swear to you, I got 2 compliments on the way home. You should know that A) I'm in incredibly dedicated hair stylist customer, B) I'm an incredibly picky hair stylist customer. After my favoritest-ever stylist (I followed her to three salons over 5 years!) moved to Colombia, I started the sad trek through all kinds of Boston salons: malls, Newbury, funky in JP, Cambridge. I finally gave up hope and grew my hair out for 2 years with home trims 'cause no one gave me that magic, that spark. Eventually I got super irritated with my hair and called three places where I was living in Inman square. That was when the gods smiled upon me and Richard booked me with Heather, my new favoritest-ever stylist the next morning. This is how it went at 9:30am the next Saturday morning. Me: Hi! I made the appointment yesterday when I spoke to Richard, he said you could cut off 10 inches for me, but I have to leave for an event at 10am. Can you do that? Heather: um, yea. (20 minutes of phenomenal hair cutting with Heather checking in to see what things I do/don't like) Me: wow! I look amazing! okay, gotta go, you're the best! (next week I stop by) Me: Hi, I love my haircut, but now it's short and I have no idea how to style it and only own a paddle brush. Heather: Dear Lord, a paddle brush?! (proceeds to show me 3 different ways to style my hair and educates me on headbands and the products that have been invented since 2001.) Ever since then I've gone back to get an asymmetrical, funky cut, to get a grown-up-i-have-a-job-interview cut, and a tired-of-short-need-to-grow-it-out cut. Each time, Richard has been phenomenal with the customer service, and Heather has been phenomenal with the hair cutting. She is worth every penny (note: cash only), and friendly and funny to boot. If you're not in the mood to talk, she doesn't talk. If you're in the mood for life advice, she gives you life advice. So so so glad the gods smiled upon me. I think getting a hair cut can be the most painful, uncomfortable experience. I hate having to first decide what I want, then communicate it to someone else and then stare at myself for an hour while someone fiddles with my head. I don't enjoy anything about the process, so I put it off until absolutely necessary. I hit my breaking point yesterday and decided, based on her great Yelps, to give Helen a try. I want to grow my hair out, so I only wanted to keep things tidy until that happens... nothing drastic. Well, I had such a great time during the cutting process and I love the cut so much I might just put the growing out part on hold for a while! Like many others before, I only have positive things to say about Savvy. After trying several places around Cambridge while searching for a place where I can get a good haircut for a reasonable price, I'm quite certain that I finally found a keeper. Helen listened to my suggestions, was open to give her own suggestions when I asked, but didn't impose her ideas on my hair. Ancillary aspects of the visit that really topped it all off were that Helen was very fun to talk with while she was styling my hair, and that she used cool, refreshing water to wash my hair on an extremely hot day. It was fabulously refreshing, and showed to me that you really feel cared for while there. And as a guy it was only $18 base -- with long hair like mine it was a steal. Also: people keep raving about Helen here on Yelp and I'll happily join in on the chorus, but I did notice the haircut that the other stylist did while I was there was also really good. In summary: I love my hair, the cost was very competitive, and I came away from the whole experience happy and refreshed. And tonight my girlfriend came home with an extremely cute haircut from Savvy too. read more

Great location, very nice and caring people, and I wish that was enough. Since my hairdresser was no longer in town, I read positive reviews on yelps and ended in Savvy for a trim and highlights on the roots. When I left the salon, I was absolutely exhausted. It took about 3 hours to highlight my roots and another 40 minutes to cut my hair. The result was a bad haircut of 80s hairstyle, what a nightmare! My hair lost silky affect which I came into the salon with. It felt unhealthy, dry, something like.. candy cotton... Hair ends were choppy and uneven. Helen cut layers way too short and left them sticking up on the top of my head like a bush. I paid over $150 at Savvy's, plus, since I could not look at it anymore, a week later I went to the other salon and paid extra $170 for the fix!!! On top, I spent about $60 for hair masks and oils. "Unacceptable", after examining my hair, said the hairdresser from the other salon, where they deep conditioned my hair, evened the layers, but obviously could not do anything about the short layers I had on the top of my head. After spending over $300, even a month later I am still left wearing my hair in a ponytail. What damage! read more

Well, I think I've found my haircut zen. My two least favorite activities which happen more than twice a year are dentist visits and haircuts. Today I had both. Fortunately, between the dentist and the haircut I had time for a half dozen oysters, a martini, and some bourbon at East Coast Grill, and that has made all the difference. Frankly, I don't think I'll ever get my hair cut again unless I'm at least half cocked. But don't let that detract from my review of Heather at Savvy! I've been going to this particular institution for almost three years now. I've gone through a few different stylists (well, 4), and each of them has been incredible. I do not have easy hair, nor am I an easy person to cut hair for (my instructions are generally along the lines of, "I like long hair, my wife doesn't, and I only get my hair cut every 4 months or so, can you keep it kinda long on top?"). Helen cut my hair and it was quite literally uneven and choppy....very underwhelmed. She said I could go back to fix it, so I did and this session didnt make it any better. Helen @ Savvy has been cutting my hair for about 2 years now. What are the two most important things about the person you choose to cut your hair? One, do they hear you when you say what you want? And two, do they DO it? Right? Sure, a nice waiting area with lovely and helpful magazines is good. (They have that) The courteous and friendly way they take your appointment call is a good thing too. (Had that as well) Even having your hair cut in a clean; visually appealing environment that feels warm and comfortable can be great. (Yep) But when you really get right down to it, you want to express your desires and have them fulfilled. And that's what Helen does. Plain and simple. Honestly, I don't need to be offered cappuccino or water, and I don't need to be presented with a million new hair care products that I can purchase - what I need is to feel like I'm being heard and to get a quality haircut that I love. And that is what I get every time I've gone in to see Helen at Savvy. She knows me by name, we sit and chat at her chair and she finds out what I want. She'll offer suggestions based on her experience, even if they are different from what I may originally want, and then she'll always respect and carry out my decision. She's that great combination of professional and personal. And the best part (or "worst" for her, as we kidded last time I went in) is that I love the way her cuts grow out. I do not have to get my hair cut as frequently as I used to because I love how it looks months and months after Helen cuts it. She's good people, and Savvy is good business. It's definitely worth checking out. :) PS - Just a thought. After reading other reviews, I wonder how often people speak up if they get a cut or a style that just doesn't sit right with them. It hasn't happened to me, but if it did I would say something. You have to. And I feel confident that the staff at Savvy would respond in kind. This place is great! I had my hair done by Tara today, and I'm so happy with it. Can't say enough good things about her and this salon. I'm a 25 year old guy with curly hair, and in the past, most of the hair cuts I've gotten we usually too short, or just silly looking. And it's been the same at fancy salons or Supercuts. The stylists here are incredibly freindly here too; not something you find everyday in cambridge. And they're inexpensive. Guys cut and wash was $18. read more

Three years of buzzing with clippers, growing my hair obscenely long and hacking away at it with desktop sheers finally necessitated professional attention. Thus, I bit the bullett and went to "that place around the corner." That place is, of course, the truly excellent Savvy Hair Design. I was a walk in, and had an appointment within an hour (which was perfect, as it gave me a little time to stroll over to 1369 and get a cup of coffee). The staff is friendly and professional. If you search this page, you will find nothing but glowing remarks about Danielle. I can't agree with these enough. She did exactly as I asked, including giving an honest opinion. Its important to emphasize how excellent her skills were, because that's why you go to a salon. At $21 dollars for a men's shampoo and cut, you cannot possibly find better, and most places charge far more for far less quality. Women's hair needs are far out of my realm of understanding, so I can't speak to anything there. But for the males, I cannot imagine a better place to get a cut. I could go on and on about how nice Danielle and the rest of the staff were, but you should go find out for yourself. If you need a haircut, Savvy cannot be beat. read more

In the five years that I've lived in Boston, the most I've gone to any salon is twice. If I had a decent cut, I went back for a trim to see if it felt 'right' to me. No place fit the bill until 6 months ago, when Savvy hair came into my life. I have very thick, wavy hair which can be difficult to work with, and Savvy Hair has gotten it right every time. Danielle is top-notch, and when she fell ill and I couldn't reschedule, the new gal Heather stepped up and gave me a great asymmetric cut that's been getting raves for weeks. another unsatisfying haircut. I miss panache in Berkeley. I'd leave thinking I owned that town - even once led to a hot hook up later that night. i live around the corner - so i stopped in for a trim. my split ends were ridiculous. the trim was okay - she definitely should have taken off more... it still looks a bit tattered at the ends. perhaps the scariest part was when i asked her opinion on what i should do next - an angled bob that was short in the back and longer in the front. i can't think of a worse haircut for me - round faces + bobs = rounder faces i think i'll be saving up for i soci for my next cut. read more

I am updating this review to explain how Richard handle himself, the one good piece in the salon, and how the color has lasted, probably the worst part. After being charged extra for this color, after 5 weeks in France with color safe shampoo, my hair has been stripped of the dark brown color and is completely blonde again. I realize I have a tough color to dye over but it looks like I used the box dye and I usually do a much better job. It's very brassy and it just makes me sad that I spent so much money on it. However, I will say that when I called to complain Richard was extremely gracious, and with his comment on my original post, had offered to fix it. Richard gets 4 stars but my actual hair cut and color gets so many negative stars I'm not changing my rating. I needed my hair to look good for my trip and it did not. It was extremely difficult to manage and I had to blow it out every day to get a good look, something I specifically said I couldn't do. I couldn't get back to the salon to get it fixed because I was on business all week and I was basically banking that they would get the style right. If you go here, just make sure you have time to go back if you need to. I was extremely disappointed but Heather was going to be there when he offered to redo my hair and I feel like that would have been really unpleasant because I was on the verge of tears with my hair before my trip. read more

Okay, this is my first one-star rating. Here's my epic tale involving Savvy Hair Design: After reading rave reviews of this place on Yelp, I decided to make an appointment at Savvy to get my hair cut and foil highlighted. I made an appointment with Danielle, who seemed very nice and knowledgeable. I arrived a few minutes after my appointment was scheduled, to find a dark, locked-up salon......... I waited for HALF AN HOUR outside the salon, frantically calling Danielle's phone number. No answer. Were they not open on Fridays? Did Danielle make a mistake? Did she die??? I finally gave up after about 45 minutes of waiting, and walked home... A few minutes later, I get a voicemail message from Danielle. "Sorry Ashli, my boss came in late today and forgot to bring the keys, so we were all locked out. I had to go next door and try to get someone to let me in, but no one could... I will do my best to make it up to you." Needless to say, it was completely unprofessional and ridiculous. I ended up at Aveda Salon in Harvard Sq. Expensive, yes. But I got BEAUTIFUL highlights and the guy who did my hair was a genius. I guess it was a good ending. BTW, the people at Aveda always arrive 30 minutes early in order to AVOID problems like this. I'm always very happy with what Richard does with my hair, and the conversation we have about it beforehand. It's not the absolutely best cut I could ever imagine having, but it is the best I've found in the area, and it's very affordable. I've only gotten haircuts here so I can't speak to their other services, but Richard's attention to detail, his respectful, warm, and professional presentation, and the quality of the haircuts wooed me away from where I'd been going for five years previous to this. I have thick hair that I cut short for the fist time a few months ago. I went to Joanna at Savvy, a bit nervous about getting it cut by someone new. She was extremely nice, and really listened to what I wanted. Unfortunately, I would say here haircutting skills are not terrific. She was able to do some of what I asked, but not all. I would go to Savvy again because everyone was really great, but not necessarily Joanna. If you are looking for a very simple cut she is someone I would recommend. If you have more complicated hair or are looking for a lot of style I would go to another dresser at Savvy. read more

Great local business! I tried Savvy one day when I was having a bad hair day and my regular stylist downtown was all booked. I searched Yelp, found some glowing reviews of Danielle, and made a same day appointment. Danielle was wonderful and high energy. I like my stylists friendly and talkative, so I had a blast talking about all the hair cutting reality tv shows that are both of our guilty pleasures. She really listened to me regarding what I wanted out of my haircut (short but not mushroom head with easy maintenance), and I absolutely love it! More importantly, weeks after my haircut I'm still getting compliments! They're now along the lines of "You should really keep your hair like this. It really suits you!" The salon environment isn't much to write home about, but it's simple and clean. If I can consistently get good haircuts, this place will earn a 5-star rating. read more

I have lived in Boston/Somerville for eight years and had trouble finding a stylist who did a good job without totally breaking the bank. I found Savvy Hair through Yelp, actually, and have been a faithful customer for three years. The fabulous Danielle used to do my hair but she is apparently no longer there. I've had other stylists since her departure and they have done an equally outstanding job. This is a total neighborhood find!! It's kiiiind of annoying that they only take cash, but a stop at the ATM is always worth it when I can leave the salon with a gorgeous new 'do. read more

A great experience, fun conversation, and a cut I'm happy to see in the mirror, store windows, the elevator doors, shiny cars....

Had a pretty terrible experience with Carolina. Asked her to get rid of some red highlights that I had by going as light as possible (light brown) and still covering them up. She insists on doing 3 procedures: 1 for my roots, 1 for "color correcting the red" (I will get to this in a second) and one for the majority of my hair. Overall, it came out a horrible dirt brown, and you could still see the red highlights. I am clearly dissatisfied. She said, "Oh, I can dye the hair the same color as the roots that might fix it". One would have thought that would be a given. By now my hair has been painfully shampooed (didn't know that was possible until this experience) 3 times and blown out. She dyes my hair the same color as my roots. Washes my hair another 3 times. Blow dry. And... My hair is the darkest brown possible without being black. Meanwhile, she is going on about how this is cheaper than Newbury Street. I am unwilling to risk her "trying again" and leave as quickly as possible and wash my hair 8 times (!!!) at home to get some of the color to bleed out. I go to my usual person on Newbury, who had been booked up (which is how I ended up trying Carolina). It is cheaper to fix this than Carolina charged. My hair stylist points out that "the red is still in there!". ... in other words, she did three procedures and didn't succeed in "color correcting" without just dying my hair so dark it is almost black. Which she could have done from the beginning without torturing me with her painful shampooing job, and charging me for 3 separate procedures. read more

I think you can best judge a haircut and style by how you feel about it a few weeks later. I have to say that a couple of weeks after my cut and highlights from Helen, I like my hair more then I did the day I got it done! She's definitely a refreshing personality to have as a hair stylist because she's down to earth, funny and honestly seems invested in giving you a good style. And even more surprising was that the product that she suggested actually works! Most of the time when I go to the salon I get jealous of all the magic they're doing to my hair, subsequently buy some 'fabulous' product and then realize that it's a bunch of crap once I get it home. But, besides being close to my house, and the fact that I love its bright blue wall, Savvy is actually a great place to get your hair done and I suggest it to anyone searching for a new place! read more

Helen is very friendly, not awkward, as far as I'm concerned, this place has been the best place for me getting my haircut. It's $18 for a wash/cut and that's what I expect to pay. After a year of searching for a new hair stylist, I can finally say that I have found someone that understands my hair. I just came back from Savvy Hair Design and I am ridiculously pleased! Tara cut my hair and rescued it from the mess it was before. She is very detail-oriented and down to earth. Everyone who works there is very personable. I didn't have time to get to my regular hair stylist, so based on the reviews I went to see Helen. I asked her to thin out my hair because it gets top heavy. What a nightmare. My ends are all uneven and she thinned out my hair way too much...I have no body now and am left wearing it in a ponytail. My hairstylist explained what she did wrong....she used her thinning shears incorrectly. Needless to say I will not be returning. read more

I don't get anything fancy done when I get a haircut, so the three things I care about with haircuts are (1) Convenience, (2) Price, and (3) Quality of conversation. I started going to Savvy Hair Design when I saw it got decent reviews, was reasonably priced, and was a couple blocks from my apartment. Since then I've continued to get my hair cut there despite moving a fair distance farther away mostly because I enjoy my conversations with Richard, the owner of the place. He's happy to talk about whatever you want, and if you're tired or having a quiet day for whatever reason, you can just sit back, relax and have him work his magic. I almost hesitate to write this review because I think it will mean I'll have to book my appointments with him even farther in advance, but I couldn't long entertain the unjust alternative of depriving you all of Richard's conversational charm. read more
