I wanted to love this place because of all the great reviews (on here and from a friend) but I must have gone in on a real bad day because my experience was pretty poor. TL;DR: I scheduled a 30 minute haircut in advance and got a 10 minute rush cut after waiting 20 minutes into my appointment. The result is a curly bob cut 1+ inches too short and crazy uneven. I booked a 30 minute appointment online, and when I came into the salon I waited 20 minutes into this time to finally be called. It was a Saturday and the stylists were backed up, and I can understand that struggle! But I sat for so long without anyone giving me a heads up that they were running late, or acknowledging me at all, really. I have curly hair and the stylist didn't even sit me down in her chair to get a look at what kind of curls I have and how they dry. She put me right under the sink to wash, and when I got to the chair I specified twice that I wanted my hair cut shoulder-length when DRY (just more than a trim from the current length). Instead, she cut my hair so that it barely tickles my shoulders when wet -- and when it's dry, it's over an inch above my shoulder. To boot, it's also crazy uneven all the way around, and puffs out terribly. This all happened in 10 minutes (the last 10 minutes of my 30 minute appointment) I really believe this salon must live up to the reviews on better days, but I've personally never had such a hasty and impersonal haircut and such bad results, so I don't think I will be returning. read more

Part of me doesn't want to leave a review here because I can always get an appointment here and Renee is a bad b*tch with the shears, but it's time for me to share my secret with others. I've been going to Salon 22 pretty consistently for about a year now, and will not be going anywhere else for my hair needs. While I haven't gotten balayage or any advance coloring aside from a glaze, Renee hits the mark every.single.time with what I want. She works quickly and listens to what you ask. Also, the keratin at this salon is awesome if you're considering a keratin treatment. I've done it twice and my hair never feels damaged. The girls are quick, affordable, good, and flexible. I had my hair done last week by Franny and as she said and I'll quote "NO MORE BACK YARD HAIR DRESSER. " Usually my color fades fast within 1-2 washes and it has not yet. It's been a few months since I came here but my hair has not recovered so I figured I would caution you. If you want to go blonde don't come here. I have always had the coolest Ashiest blonde and long hair. I showed Renee exactly what I wanted but she disregarded me. Instead using foils on my hair she just free handed the whole thing and put low volume developer on my hair for hours. She gave me a haircut that ruined my shape and I cant style. I'm SOOOO glad I decided to go to Salon 22 and work with Renee. I got a balayage because it's so cute and not too drastic of a change. Renee took so much care of my hair and gave you the honest truth. She is someone you can have a casual conversation with or just listen and relax. The other stylist often would help if Renee got busy and I love that about companies. Renee is extremely knowledgeable about hair. When I sit in her chair, I know that I will be well taken care of and do not have to worry at all. On my last visit, she told me all about my straight asian hair -- how to best cut it, how to style it, etc. Because I'm so lazy and do not style my hair at all (I also have no idea how to), she showed me her secret easy technique for curling hair and was willing to go over with me multiple times until I said I got the hang of it. I originally came to Renee to get my hair cut and dyed, but upon showing her pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like, I walked out with just a haircut. She told me that the picture were all just lighting and my hair already naturally looks like that. Also, because my hair doesn't hold color well and will turn brassy quickly, she didn't recommend dying it period. What hair stylist doesn't want to charge you $100+ to dye your hair?! That is why I completely trust Renee when she tells me what will work for me and what will not. I also love salon 22 because it's almost a barbershop feel. Everyone was so friendly and chatting with each other. When my haircut was done, a few of the girls made me take selfies and took pictures of my hair for me to show off its awesomeness; I reluctantly went from long hair to shorter hair. I came in last night for a haircut with Koryn and literally had to make a Yelp account for this because I'm so happy haha. I don't know if anyone else can relate to this, but it seems like every time I get a haircut, I end up hating it for the first few days while I get used to it. I've had the same pretty plain haircut for years, so I'm not sure why, it just doesn't seem to hit in the right spot or certain pieces sit weird or whatever. I've always attributed this to me not liking change until my cut with Koryn when I loved it instantly- at the salon, at home, and after I showered and ruined the nice blowout. :) I get a pretty simple cut but Koryn was very attentive to my particular concerns. She helped take out a TON of thickness, she made sure it was parted exactly where I wanted, made sure not to trim too much. My hair is long & thick and she was still able to do a wash, cut, and dry in less than 30 minutes without rushing me. On top of it all, $40 is insanely affordable for a women's haircut in the area. You won't find a better price. Will definitely be back to Koryn next time I need a trim! read more

I have been here three times for a haircut and I've had three very different experiences. The first time I visited was back in the summer of 2013 and I got my haircut by Renee. She did an amazing job and I was super satisfied with my hair. It looked great the entire rest of the day and I took a ton of selfies. I was a walk-in and they took me very quickly without a problem. The second time I visited was earlier this summer and I booked the appointment via Yelp and saw Renee again. When I arrived, she was very frazzled and told me that she didn't get notified via Yelp that I made the appointment through them, and so I had to wait a bit as she finished up with someone else. What was tricky about this visit was feeling bad for the Yelp mishap and having one of her friends there, since I felt like she was so distracted during my appointment and walked away from the chair a handful of times. My hair looked halfway decent when I left, but the next day I wasn't too thrilled with the results. The third time I visited was tonight after work, and I purposely booked with Koryn this time. I also made the appointment via Booker instead of Yelp so that there wasn't any confusion! Koryn was excellent, listened to exactly what I wanted and was efficient, which I really respected. The next time I visit, I will probably go to Koryn for this reason. In my opinion, tonight's experience helped to balance out the poor experience I had from earlier this summer. Overall, the prices here are reasonable, and you do walk out with a nice haircut. I can't speak about their color services, waxing or dramatic cuts, but for trims, definitely come here. read more

I got a haircut here on a Thursday night. The stylists were very nice and the place was inviting. My hair looked ok, when given a quick glance but when I went into work the following day, my coworkers kept asking me what was going on with my hair. I've been seeing Renee pretty regularly for cut & color. She is extremely knowledgeable and I love that she is willing to share her opinions during our consultations. If I come in without a fully-formed idea of what I want, she is always more than happy to talk through our options, look at photos, and formulate a plan together. Renee has a great sense of how to flatter a person's features by shaping your cut in a particular way. It is also clear that she is passionate about color. Renee gave my thick, super curly hair the best cut it's ever had - so of course I had to come back a week later to have her color it, and then a couple of weeks after that to have her blow it out for a wedding. A few months later, I had to have Renee correct the previous color (purple) back to my natural hair color, and it was flawless. Repeated visits for trims have been great, too. LOVE HER. I went to Renee for the first time about two years ago now, and I've had some of my best cuts and colors with her! I moved down to JP, and although I like the salon by me, it's just not the same. I went to her originally for a pixie cut, and I wanted it to be bleached with red highlights. I walked in and told her what I wanted, and she was so enthusiastic about it! I had other stylists always talk me out of my crazy hair cut/color ideas, so I was thrilled to find someone who actually listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly what I was looking for (and with a lot of great input!) The process took a while, but the color was exactly what I wanted (not that silver/purple bleach color everyone is doing nowadays, but a more golden beach bleach blonde) and was totally affordable. I had never gotten so many compliments on my hair than I did with that cut. It's still one of my favorites! Needless to say, now that my hair is longer and I don't need to get it cut every two months, I'll be going out of my way to go back to Renee :) When they open at 11 today, I'm making an appointment! read more

Renee has great creative vision and is always able to take my limp, lifeless hair (b/c yes, I always wait too long between haircuts), and turn it into beautiful hair. She's also great, b/c she understands that as a mom there are limits to what you can or should do to your hair (like, are you sure you want it that short? you wont be able to pull it back! good point!). I've wanted to go gray now for 3years and after reading the great reviews I scheduled an appointment with Renee. On December 5th I went in with virgin hair to get a cut and go from brunette to gray instead I got a disaster that took 6hours and cost $100. Then I went back on the 10th to get it fixed (for free because she "couldn't put her name" on that mess). It still wasn't what I asked for but it was WAY better than what I came in with. The only problem with that was that less than 2 weeks later it was no longer gray but bright blonde! I texted her telling her my hair turned blonde with a picture attached and she never responded. I've been here a few times - great cuts, convenient to the neighborhood, very friendly and able to do walk-ins. But there are some inconsistencies. Family members and close friends seem to pop in and out and can get a little chaotic. Sometimes it's fun to have that kind of energy in a shop, but there are times when it means the customer's time in the chair is being interrupted. And my messages asking to schedule an appointment aren't answered. Their outgoing message doesn't mention booking online or that they are closed on Mondays. Maybe they do now, I don't know, I stopped calling and have been able to get a haircut if I walk-in during the weekday. But I need a trim every couple of months and can't always do a weekday. With that said, recently I did have an appointment for a Thursday evening. According to whoever answered the phone earlier that week, Thursday and Friday evenings they are open past 5 pm and according to this page, they are open until 7 pm. She asked me if I could make it by 6 pm, and she took my name and cell number. So why are they locked up and closed at 5:45 pm? Ok, maybe they wrote my number wrong, it happens. Maybe they were busy crazy and forgot to write the appointment in the book. But if a shop closes early, a sign in the window would be OK, I can understand, stuff comes up, emergencies happen. But it got me to thinking that maybe it's just too much work to get my hair cut at this salon. This salon reminds me of one of those places that are happy with their existing clientele of extended family and do not have the ability to accommodate more. Or maybe I use vacation days in an effort to get a haircut between 11 am to 2 pm Tue-Fri because you know Saturdays are always booked. I wish them well, Koryn is a good stylist. read more

I get my hair cut very infrequently, once every 12-18-24 months, partly because I have thick wavy hair that can be difficult to cut well, and because salons in Boston can be so expensive. My last three cuts have been with Salon 22, twice with Renee and once with Koryn. All three cuts were great. I just got it cut with Renee last week, a different style and shorter than it's ever been, and she a wonderful job, not only with technique but also walking me through the whole process. She is knowledgable with curly hair and understanding about giving a cut that is easy to maintain at home. After so many years and haircuts, I trust these ladies and wanted to give them their credit - very skilled and down to earth, I won't be going anywhere else. This is a great, affordable salon. My haircut took about 20 minutes including the wash and style, and it looks great! There weren't a lot of frills to the experience--so I didn't get a scalp massage with the wash or anything like that. But for Somerville, where haircuts can cost 70+ per cut, this was an excellent experience that didn't break the bank. read more

Salon 22 is the only salon that I've ever been a regular at. Having a pixie haircut and needing frequent haircuts, that's highest praise I can give. Short version - pros: attentive, fast, good prices, easy to book appointments. Long version - I always call to schedule an appointment, whether a week ahead or same-day. However, they aha online booking as well. E-mail confirmations make it easy to make sure I have the date and time correct. Koryn is always able to accommodate my schedule. She is efficient and always translates my "I don't know how haircuts work, but this would be fun to try" comments into great cuts that get compliments from strangers. Even better, the cuts grow out well, lasting 6-8 weeks. My hair is a mess of cowlicks and she quickly learned (and remembers) how to best work with them to avoid awkward bumps and curls. Koryn is also very personable, remembering the things we chatted about months ago. It is refreshing to not feel like a stranger every time I need a haircut (a feeling I was accustomed to before finding Salon 22). Highly recommend. read more

Koryn did such a good job coloring and cutting my hair! I came in only expecting to get a cut but we discussed my color options and I decided to add that on. My hair was an uneven, grown out red brown blonde mess, and Koryn gave me several suggestions of what to do. She was clear about what would and would not work on my hair and didn't set any unrealistic expectations of what she would be able to do (such as going lighter without me committing to bleach). She came up with a beautiful light copper brown with gold highlights! The cut was quick and efficient, and she knew just what to do to thin out my thick overgrown hair.
