I came to Amal Niccoli after seeing many recommend this place on Facebook. I saw that they do walk-in's so I came on a Saturday morning at opening time at 0900. Courtney greeted me and said she was able to take me in. The salon was clean, welcoming, and felt comfortable. I requested for 3 inches cut off, long layers, side swept bangs, and face framing pieces. She absolutely delivered! She was very easy to converse with and made me feel very comfortable. She also told me how they do free bang trims which is so nice! I usually trimmed my own bangs but now I know I can set up an appointment and come in for a quick bang trim. I paid 67$ for a shampoo, cut, and blow dry. I absolutely love my haircut and will make Courtney and Amal salon my primary hair salon now! Thank you again! read more

I highly recommend this salon. It's an awesome vibe that feels like you are going to a friend's house to get your hair done, except that friend happens to be a talented hair colorist and stylist. They have snacks, cold drinks, coffee, and are extremely welcoming. It's the opposite of a corporate/chain environment. I especially recommend Colleen Shea, but the whole team is amazing. read more

Just had my corona hair refreshed last week at Amal Niccoli. It's tough to know what to expect post-Covid surge, but Lori thought of absolutely everything! There is a sanitation procedure to follow before entering the salon, stylist stations are well spaced, proper PPE is required for staff and clients, disposable towels were used and clients were given a gift set of natural hand sanitizers for home and body. Lori hasn't lost her sense of humor either-I enjoyed a much needed laugh, felt pampered but also safe. I left with a perfect cut and color, sanitizer gift set and also a new fabric mask! I've been here a few times over the years since moving to Somerville and I've always had a great experience. I decided on a whim today to get a haircut and since I now live down the block from Amal Niccoli Salon, I decided to give them a call and lucky for me, they were able to fit me in a mere 20 minutes later. Some basics: Over the years they've made a lot of improvements to the salon. It's clear that they've tried to spruce up the place and I like how open and bright it is. For those who don't live in the area it's not too far of a walk from Davis square and if you're driving there is metered (or resident, if you live in the 'ville) parking and they will make sure to put quarters in if your appointment goes over the allotted time of the meter. In addition to hair services they also do facials, acupuncture, waxing and makeup services for special occasions. Melinda was able to take me as soon as I walked through the door and we quickly went to work. I like how she asked me questions about what I was looking for and offered suggestions about length, layers and whatnot. I was unsure about how much I wanted to cut so she trimmed some and then asked if I wanted to go shorter (which I did!). I have a LOT of wavy/curly hair and sometimes stylists have no idea what to do with it. But Melinda obviously knows how to work with curls and she gave me a cut that I love. In addition to a great cut, Melinda and all of the other employees I talked to are incredibly friendly. I mentioned that my mother previously used to use a certain Aveda product that's been discontinued and another employee chimed in with the suggestion to combine two other products for the same effect. She even gave me samples to give to my mother! That little bit extra always goes a long way with me. Finally, it's an affordable cut. Forty dollars for a cut and style is extremely cheap by Boston standards. Go to Amal Niccoli! Ask for Melinda, you won't be sorry. read more

I recently had a second hair cut with Julie. My first impression was that she did layers with ease and in a fraction of the time that it has taken others. Literally , I once had a salon owner laboriously slightly layer my hair for an hour with the results that took Julie 15 minutes. I've only seen Melinda, but I've had my hair cut and colored here twice, and been extremely happy with the turn out. To be fair, I have only had all over color, and I'm pretty easy to please....but, I have had really bad experiences with hair color and cuts in the Boston area. Melinda is the first person I have repeat patroned an will be going back for another appointment in a few months for more complicated color. Colleen Shea has been my stylist for over two years. She is a talented colorist (I often get unsolicited positive feedback about my color) and really gets the complexity of a good haircut (I also get MEN commenting on my great cuts so there you go). She's just fantastic. I've followed Colleen from another salon to this one. I saw her for the first time at Amal Niccoli last week. At first I as nervous because of parking (and parking meters that run until 8pm!) but when I walked in the first sign I read on the walls is that the salon helps each client make sure they are set with quarters and will assist them with providing them/putting them in the meters if necessary. This is highly unusual and an extremely thoughtful and generous policy to have. But I was also nervous not to fit in. Nothing, however, disappointed me: Colleen was great as always, and it was a clean, relaxed atmosphere--attractive but not pretentious. And it's an Aveda salon, so it's sells high quality organic hair products and uses high quality color/products/ Just a really nice experience and my hair looks great for a great price. read more

I've been going to Amal Niccoli for a few years now. When I first moved to the Boston area, I was so terrified to let anyone touch my hair, other than my usual person in Iowa, I went 8 months without even a hair cut. I honestly waited to return home to Iowa for Christmas before getting my hair done. A few months later a friend recommended Amal Niccoli. I was hesitant, but hoped for the best. I was THRILLED when Deanna cut and colored my hair for the first time. I cut 7 inches off my hair (a huge amount for me!) and had it colored. It looked amazing! Two years later I still make sure Deanna can fit me in for a cut and color. She is confident when trying new things with my hair and won't hesitate to give advice on what works best for my hair. I definitely appreciate that because I'm far from being a hair expert. It's nice to walk into a place and be greeted with a smile. First of all, the only reason I'm giving the 4 star rating instead of 5 is because I've only been there once. I don't feel qualified enough to give it the highest rating. But I do intend on returning (they do glycolic peels and I love Aveda and Murad) and giving another update in the future. That being said, I had my hair cut this weekend by Kerri. She listened, she asked questions, she adjusted things as needed and she did a fantastic job. Kerri's cut gets 5 stars for sure. Her cut was the first I've had in 6 months because I haven't found a stylist in Somerville that I'm that comfortable with yet (and I'm tired of experimenting with not so great results). Been looking for a regular salon close to where I live (as opposed to close to my office) and tried them for the first time and it was great. Melinda did my hair and she asked me a lot of questions about what I wanted, and what my regular hair routine was. I've never had a stylist ask so many questions about what I do with my hair. She even asked if I've had my hair thinned with trimming scissors before. I really appreciated the time she took to talk to me about these things. Fortunately, I'm very calm about getting my hair cut because I have to do it so often, but she would be great for people who get nervous about their haircuts. They are an Aveda salon, and I'm very happy with the results that come from the Aveda color products they use. The stylist keep up to date on styles and products. Have been here a few times now, all with Julie. I always go on Tuesdays for the student discount, it is amazing. I get super nervous about new people touching my hair, and I had tried several salons since moving to Boston and found them all to be overpriced and not very satisfying. Julie does a great job and for an amazing price. Everyone who works here is very friendly, they will run outside to feed your meter, bring you drinks or magazines, and are nice to chat with! I'll continue going here and I would recommend it. You can pay for services with a credit card but tips are cash only, make sure to bring some! read more

I recently returned after the COVID 19 closure and I was very impressed with their COVID safety improvements and procedures. The staff is also amazing, each with their own specialties. The owner, Lori was very sympathetic to everyone's needs and went above and beyond to accommodate all clients. She even made masks and provided sanitation gift bags for each customer. I have to agree with all the rave reviews already posted here. Upon a colleague's recommendation, I had a haircut with Melinda today. I called on Thursday and was able to secure a Saturday appointment, which was great. Melinda was right on time and ready to get my cut started at noon on the dot. She listened to what I wanted, asked a few questions, and consulted with me throughout the cut. I have long hair and I like it long, so I asked her to go pretty conservatively. Now that I know Melinda will listen and do what I ask for, I'll probably take a greater leap of faith and go a by shorter next time. I'm used to stylists trying to push styling products on me following a haircut. Instead, when she discovered that I don't use any product at all, Melinda said that was awesome and probably why my hair, in spite of being cut so infrequently, is very healthy. I also asked about color, providing an opportunity for Melinda to cash in. Instead, she old e se thinks my color looks great as is and that doing any additional color would only compel me to have to keep it up and sped tons of money. Melinda is funny, friendly, honest, and she'll give some good advice but ultimately do what you ask her to do. Best part....$40 cut. Best deal around. read more

Jet black hair that was going gray. I'm too young for gray hair, I also have curly hair and needed to get a cut and color badly!! I normally go to another salon up the street but my regular hairdresser was booked solid for about a month. I decided to ask my friend and yelper where she went as she has dark and curly hair too. She told me who she sees and where she goes so I followed her advice and made and appointment at Amal Niccoli with Melinda. Let me tell you, Melinda knows what she is doing. Great haircut and color and very fun to talk to. Amal Niccoli is a bit less expensive than where I normally go. I have to say I'm quite impressed. I came to Amal Niccoli to get my hair and make-up done for my wedding. About a month before the wedding I did a bridal trial with Julie, for my hair, and Susan, for my make-up. They were both really good at trying different things out, experimenting with different ideas, and listening to what I wanted for my wedding day. When the morning of the wedding actually came, they were awesome enough to get to the salon by 7 am on a Saturday so I could have enough time to get ready for my noon wedding. I looked beautiful when they were done with me, and the make-up and hair lasted all day. Plus, they were affordable to boot. Wherever I move, I generally find an Aveda salon because I know I can trust the color and general quality. That plan served me well with Amal Niccoli. I've been seeing Sheila for about a year and a half and she's never gone wrong -- I'm as happy with my color and cut as I was going to an Aveda salon when I lived in Manhattan (and I'm now a lot happier with what I pay!), because Sheila knows what she's doing.
