She spent 4 full hours on my shoulder length frizzy curly wavy Spanish/Italian hair and it came out as straight and soft as silk!! She is so thorough with every step of the process and makes sure to condition your hair as much as is needed. She answered all my questions during and after the process and gave me tips on how to care for my hair. I'm going to Sardinia, Italy in 3 weeks and can't wait to go in and out of the ocean without a hair care in the world!! I called for a same day appointment, as the receptionist was able to confirm a time in the afternoon when I called that morning. I arrived a couple minutes early and they were able to start on washing my hair right away as they didn't have other guests. After the wash, Grace (I'm assuming) asked about my hair. I told her I wanted to keep my length but wanted it thinned out. She nodded and quickly got to cutting. I was open to conversation so we made some small talk. Once she was almost finished, a male guest came in for his appointment, so that was good timing. She blew dry my hair and curled it, but didn't show me with a hand mirror what she'd done before curling. I'm not sure if she forgot to or if she doesn't typically do this, as this was my first time here. She had also parted my hair to the side I don't normally use, but my mom said it looks better that way. I think being able to communicate in Korean could've added more to this experience, but she does speak enough English to give a good haircut: I'd gotten exactly what I requested. read more

I live in the area and come here for a haircut once a month. I'm always impressed by Grace's expertise and dedication to her craft. She has a whole array of haircut instruments but always keeps them tidy and hygienic, which gives you a lot of assurance from the get-go. It's often "hit or miss" with these designer salons but Grace has never failed to check all the boxes every time I go. Also, the price here is very reasonable considering the location. I pay about $45 each time (including tip), which seemed a little pricey the first time I moved to Boston. But then I found out that comparable Asian stylists around Cambridge, Brighton, Allston, etc. typically charge considerably more---the $60+ range is normal in this town. So what you end up getting is a solid, good-looking haircut for a great price, all things considered. I only did a somewhat "fancy" thing once (a down-perm) and again found it surprisingly affordable---a bit over $100. Granted, I'm a guy and typically don't do a lot of the fancier stuff (although I know many other people do those things here and seem quite happy). Finally, I don't get some of the negative reviews I see here. I got to know this place through word of mouth, and know many folks who treat it as their go-to stylist. Everyone can have different experiences, to be sure, but my sense is that the negative feedback is quite outside the norm in this case. read more

I provided a reference photo with long see-through bangs that ended between the eyebrow and the top of the eye and neat straight hair that ended an inch past the shoulder, although I did ask for a shorter length (just above the shoulder, but still the same hairstyle). I was horrified by the short cut I got -- it didn't look anywhere like the reference photo. It came out looking poofy and rather mullet-like instead, and when I questioned why it looked that way I was simply told that it was because my hair was too frizzy and that I had to manage it myself (wish I got a warning that the hairstyle wouldn't work because of my hair texture BEFORE my hair got whacked off, maybe we could've worked something out). The bangs were also cut super quickly and without many adjustments made after the first cut, and as a result they came out extremely blunt. I didn't have my glasses on so I couldn't see earlier, but when I walked out and looked closer in the car mirror I saw that they were pretty thick and ended ABOVE my eyebrows, not like the long wispy bangs I had requested in the photo. I also noticed that on the right side the bangs were extremely jagged and one strand was about a half inch longer than the strands next to it. Also on the right side she had made some attempt at a gradient from the bangs into the side pieces, but on the left side there was nothing like that so now it's just uneven. The pricing also came out to be $66 without tip and about $80 with tip included, which is pretty outrageous pricing for an awful haircut. She gave me some "hair care" tips that would flatten my hair down and make it less frizzy (since I was still protesting about how poofy it looked), which was basically to use leave in conditioner and just comb it through to really drag my hair down after I came out of the shower. I tried that for a few days and funny enough it also didn't work. I'm walking around with this puffy mess of hair and short blunt bangs now, which really is unflattering because I have a round face. I'm fixing the bangs on my own now. I also noticed that the girl before me walked out with a similar cut, and now it's got me thinking that she only knows how to cut one style of hair and it's this outdated early 2000s Asian drama hairstyle (think Boys Over Flowers, but again even less flattering because her face is longer while mine is round). So don't come here unless you're looking for that. Disappointing, because I decided to change things up and try an Asian salon because they understand Asian hair but at this point I'm returning to my usual salon. Made an wash/cut appointment on a whim after walking by for many years living in Somerville. Was looking for a new hair stylist since the woman I've been going to moved away. Was so happy I went, always had heavy hair and she worked her crazy fast hands magic to somehow lighten the weight, she's super fast, I had wash/cut/dry/styled in 30 min and I loved the result, I couldn't stop playing with my weightless hair for rest of the day. Boyfriend said haircut made me look 10 years younger, bonus. I found my new stylist! English is not her first language but I didn't have problems communicating with her. The proprietor and chief stylist is a Korean lady named Grace in her 50s or 60s who definitely knows her craft---evident in her excellent results despite how quickly and seemingly effortlessly she works, as opposed to a novice who is super-slow and super-careful because they lack confidence and experience. Unfortunately, Grace's personality leads a lot to be desired: cold, distant, and more than a bit haughty. She will turn on the ice treatment if you have the audacity to ask her to do something different than what she thinks your hair needs, as if you, O lowly ignorant peon, have just insulted her professional expertise. The first time I went there, I told her that I had chosen her based on the good reviews on Yelp. She was clearly pleased, and probably assuming that I would add to her stockpile of rave reviews, took extra time and care to give me what was probably the best haircut I've ever had. I let her do whatever she wanted, including the usual disastrous blow-dry and styling that most salons do after the haircut---which almost always results in a puffed up, over-gelled pimp-looking hairdo that I have to run home to shower. The second time I went there, she seemed to only vaguely remember me, seemed distracted and preoccupied, and spent maybe half as much time, and did a fairly mediocre-to-bad job. Like the first time, I didn't offer any feedback or instructions during the haircut, which I immediately regretted afterwards. So I didn't come back for the next 4 months, trying out a different and much cheaper place in the same neighborhood instead. My third visit was the least pleasant, although the actual haircut was much better because I very clearly (but very politely) stated exactly how I wanted it cut before and during, not wanting a repeat of the previous visit's botched haircut. Grace complied but was distinctly stone-faced and brusque about it, seemingly to do the minimum possible and giving me the impression she just wanted to get it over with. What few bits of human warmth she had during the first two visits were completely gone; she didn't speak, make eye contact, or smile once. Perhaps this thin-skinned over-inflated pride is a feature of old-school Korean culture, but I found myself feeling very uncomfortable and sickened by.the pettiness and rigidity. Needless to say, I will not be coming back and putting myself at the mercy of her dysfunctional personality just for the off-chance of getting a fabulous haircut if it happens to suit her whims that day---not when I can get a perfectly decent haircut for half the price from a much nicer, friendlier Dominican salon down the street (see my review). I suppose if you are extremely picky about your hair and are willing to pay top dollar for it and humor a waxen-faced woman's delusions of grandeur, this wouldn't be a bad choice. PS. The Indian woman and co-stylist who washes your hair before Grace gets to it was very friendly every time, in contrast to her boss. Also, they do walk-ins but an appointment might be a better idea since there can be long waits. However they seem to overbook appointments at times too...so just come with a book or magazine in case. read more

Go here for eyebrow threading! Both women are great, and Mamata is especially fabulous. I had been getting my brows threaded for years in Harvard and Central Square, and thought they were looking good. Turns out I was wrong! Mamata took one look at my brows and said "they're crooked. Who did this to you?" I was shocked. But then she proceeded to spend about twenty minutes carefully measuring my eyebrows with her thread, tracing my face shape, and evening out my brows. The result was incredible! I haven't seen my brows look so good in years. I felt prettier and my face looked more open. I am used to threaders spending about 5 minutes on my brows, but she spent a lot longer and as a result, they looked so much better! The price is about $15, and is well worth it. The only places where I've had such great work done were in fancy spas where I have spent around $40! read more

This is the BEST salon I've been to in a LONG time! My haircuts are super consistent each time and Grace is very very quick. When you look a bit sweaty from the New England summers, she'll wash your hair with cool water before the cut and then style your hair with nice korean products after your cut. Yay I got my dream haircut! I woke up yesterday and had that fidgety feeling of needing a change. So I took a pair of scissors and chopped off my bangs. After the surge of adrenaline wore off, I realized how difficult the whole endeavor was and biked my way over to Grace Salon for a 9am walk-in. My inspiration was a 20s flapper Karen O hairdo that looked effortlessly chic. I was able to converse with Grace in both English and in Korean and she confided in me that she wished she could communicate more clearly in English. Although Grace has the steely demeanor needed to run her own business, at heart, she is a complete softie :) Halfway through, I had a job interview via phone and Grace was totally cool with me taking an extended phone call. After a while I decided to add a bit of color and fully enter the realm of artsy-fartsy-hipsterism. I talked to Grace about planning to perform open mic at the cafe down the street and she told me to stop by beforehand to say hi. Although I will have to work a few more hours to cover Her Excellency's Work, I feel so fresh, fresh, fresh that I think I'll float through this week (starting a new part-time job so will need that extra surge of energy). This is my fourth time at Grace's Salon. After having failed multiple times trying to find a suitable salon, I have to say, hands-down, Grace's is the place to go if you are looking for a great haircut/trim, perm/straightening, and/or color-treatment for your hair. I've done all three within the five years I've been here in Boston and none others were comparable to here. I am not in any way affiliated with Grace or her place. Here are my honest two-cents below: Pros: 1) Despite what some may say about her styling skills, they are the best in Boston (so far). She's really great with her scissors and when I got the perm and ombre-coloring done, they came out fantastic! I recently got a trim and I've uploaded the results of it if you'd like to check them out (you will also be able to see the ombre still left in my hair). 2) I'm always afraid to go to salons because I feel like they will "rip me off" by talking me into doing more things to my hair. But not Grace. She's pretty honest and gets to the point. A few other Yelpers below may have commented on her brusque-ness in manner and talk, but that's just a cultural thing (or maybe personality, haha, but everyone's different, right?). If you are not Korean (meaning, recently from Korea) or don't have much knowledge about the culture, then Grace's attitude may bother you, but it's not because she wants to be rude to her customers. It seems like English is still hard on her, but I appreciate the fact that she tries to improve. Anyways, she may "offer" to try different things with your hair, but she's never been forceful. 3) Treats! Sometimes she offers her customers food! :) Who can deny yummy-in-the-tummy? Cons: 1) Waiting-time? It may be that there is a shortage of "helpers" there and since she is the main hairdresser. For instance, sometimes, there are times where I just sort of unnecessarily sit there waiting for her to finish on another when she had originally started with me. 2) Cleanliness? Someone mentioned about previous people's "hair on the floor." I'm not too picky about these things, because I understand it's hard to keep things in an orderly fashion when you're the only employer around, but when it's raining or snowing outside and she asks you to sit in a chair where there are other people's hair on the floor, sometimes it gets stuck to my shoes/boots because of the rain and well, it was a bit yucky :P Not a big deal though. *NOTE 1: There is another employer there, Mamatha, and she's wonderful. She's a Nepali, just in case you wanted to know :) *NOTE 2: Price may seem to be pricey at times, but it is ...Boston :/ In that sense, it's just average, I guess. I hear that Grace cuts women's hair very well but I can't say the same for men's hair. It was time for me to get yet another risky haircut so I turned to yelp for direction as of where I could throw away $20-$40. For the past year I had been cutting my own medium length hair to avoid salon disasters so I wasn't too thrilled to have to pay for a cut this time. I was lucky enough to find this Korean hair salon by Harvard (relatively close to, Scissor Sound is too far) that cuts for only $25. The phone call: it was very strange. An Indian woman picked up and answered my questions. She said walk-ins are welcome but appointments are suggested so I went ahead and put one down. The visit: I was hesitant to enter, I was afraid that I made an appointment to an Indian hair salon. All my questions were answered when I was able to grasp the concept of Grace Salon. Grace is the main and possibly only stylist. She's in charge of the hair cutting and is the supervisor of her workers. The workers- one Korean girl, one Indian, and one South American (I think) does the treatments/coloring/answers phone calls. There was a review regarding Grace's negative behavior/attitude but I didn't see it at all. In fact, she was very pleasant and kept complimenting on my looks. **I could see that Grace was very busy, lucky I made an appointment because if the party of 3 didn't cancel their appointment, she may have not even been able to get to me** Like all Asian salons, they have hair magazines from the 90's so bring a picture if you can. The wash: I'm not picky about services. I washed my hair before going in so I didn't even need a wash but I could explain the wash as a rinse. Grace casually wet my hair, I'm not really sure if she got deep enough to reach my scalp. The cut: this is where it gets disappointing. Without my glasses, I'm blind as a bat. This is a major disadvantage at hair salons, I'm never able to point out any mistakes because I really only get a few glimpses of the cut until I'm out the door. **I brought in a picture. Grace was thoughtful enough to place the picture standing up on her station as reference in the duration of the cut. Sadly the results were nothing like the photo.** I can't say that she followed the style at all but I do like my hair. What the picture had was short to medium length hair with minimal layers. What I got was harshly cut thin layers that resemble brushes. I mean I wanted a short cut for a long time and I just wear what she gave me as a faux hawk but I do miss the layerless hair that took a very long time to grow out. The bottom line (for men): Grace will cut your hair into a nice style. Would that be the style you asked for? Probably not but you probably will like what she gives you. **This is coming from me, a guy looking for a short to medium cut. If you have short hair then disregard my comment because I personally don't think it matters where you get a buzz cut done.** What I could point out to her is that I don't want layers and just want the sides to be thinned underneath the surface. My favorite part of the visit probably was the flattering comments she gave me. She was able to convince the entire salon into thinking that I look like Bi Rain (Korean pop star). Do not come to this salon!!!!!!!! 1. I scheduled an appointment at 1:00, got there at 12:45, and she was running until 1:35. I had to leave at 2:00... she literally did a blow dry for me and charged me for full price for something she did in 25 min. 2. I had digital perm 2 months ago in Asia and told her that I just need some styling help and want to keep my curls longer. She used brush to comb through my hair!! And she tried to straighten my hair! And even tried to use a straightener!!! Is she alright?? Using any of those is a big no no in digital permed hair and she broke all the rules!!! I was ready to cry. I had to ask her to stop and ask her to air dry my hair. She totally ruined my digital perm and now my curls are less curly than I walked in today. In fact, the back of my hair is pretty much straight now. Now I'm going to wash my hair again and see if I can get my curl back. WTF read more

I went to Grace Salon a couple of weeks ago for a pretty easy long-hair cut, some layers, nothing very fancy. For my last haircut before that at a different salon I went with more layers for the first time in a gazillion years which didn't work out so well - I don't like to blow dry my hair or do anything time intensive with it. It looked great when I came out of the salon but already after the first wash it just didn't sit right... I walked into Grace's without an appointment on a Saturday afternoon and even though they were pretty busy, Yeny was able to take me and I had to wait for only about 5 minutes. After looking at my hair, she suggested exactly the right things and the haircut she gave me was / is perfect. It falls nicely without having to fuss with it and continues to look great after the few weeks that have passed now (which is the ultimate test - any hair can look good right after you leave a salon...). Yeny was also great to talk to! She worked at a good pace and I was out in about 50 minutes (I hate it when I'm done after 20 minutes and feel like everything was rushed, but even worse for me is to sit at a salon for 1 1/2- 2 hours - I just don't want to take that amount of time for a haircut). My boyfriend had gone to Grace Salon before and had seen Grace herself and was always very happy. We live right around the corner and I thought to give it a shot and could not have been happier. The salon is very clean, bright, friendly and if you're turned towards the door you have a lovely view of part of union square with great people watching. Oh, and the price for a wash-cut-dry haircut like mine is very reasonable ($45). I'll definitely be coming back! read more

I never, ever write reviews but I felt so compelled to do so after my experience in hopes of helping others. ************DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON.**************** I went to this salon about a week ago for a consult after reading up on digital perms. My hair is long, dull and needed a lift. Grace said that I really shouldn't do a digital perm as my hair is already damaged. I also, needed a cut & color desperately. She convinced me that I can do all three ("special perm", color and cut) all in the same day. She said the "special perm" would do the same thing as a digital perm but would be less harmful for my hair. I trusted her and made an appointment (HUGE MISTAKE!). I now wish I got a 2nd opinion. Long story short, I was in the salon for over 4 hours, the "special perm" was just a regular perm (which I hate!), the cut was nothing special and the color is just Ok. I'm now out $405 (ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS PRICE) with a hairstyle that I can't wait till it grows out. This place should shut down! read more

Yes, it is a five star place because it is run by a five star hair stylist. After going around in four or five salon recommended by friends with disasters done to my hair, I found her reviews on Yelp and decided to give it a try today. Wow... finally I have got someone who got my hair right. She washed my hair, nice shampooing and conditioning. Nice salon, simple, some plants to purify the air, everything clean, sterilized scissors. Saw two rooms probably for waxing, I am not sure. I showed her on a magazine with different hair styles what I had in mind and we talked about it in details. She multitasks, asks exactly what you want all steps of the way and if you like this or that. Her English is not good but she could understand exactly what I wanted and we communicated well. She cut the hair and dried, and realized that I have much more hair that she had expected, so she was not lazy at all and kind of did another cut on the top of the first she had just done. I have tried to have my hair cut in many different places in the US and Brazil and I can say for sure that she has ability with the different scissors and knows what she is doing. It is definitely worhty paying the 45 dolars for it and I left her a nice tip too. I recommend her as a very skilled professional. I am very satisfied with my new style. read more

I cannot afford at this time to go to Newbury Street in Boston or Park Ave in NYC to get my eyebrows done or Brazlian wax . I use to go to Allston but that is a distance so I tried this place in Cambridge and left with one eyeborw thinner than the other. So I waited three months look like a homeless person with eyebrows connected to one another .. So embrassed & ashamed . A friendof mind mention this place use to be calle Chez Orize. Went yestersday May 13. They do eyebors wax or threading for the price of $12.00 . Cindy took her time and explain everything as to what she was doing and how much she was taking off . She is truly an artist..you can see it in the way she handles your hair, the flick of her wrist as she cuts...and she is truly graceful as she moves around the chair, chopping and tousling to perfection. Worst experience and service ever! I went in high hopes to get a short hair cut despite the bad rumors I've heard. I've heard that she doesn't actually listen to you and that there is her "default" style to every style. When I walked in, she told me how late I was, then asked inappropriately personal questions, and kept on nagging about the bad kind of perm I'd had earlier. I just sat down and I began telling her what I wanted and even pointed to a picture in the book, but she kept cutting until I looked like a boy. Also, when I asked her to shorten the length of my hair at the back of my neck, she put on this fit and kept on lecturing me about telling her at the beginning. She tugged on my hair and kept shoving me and was so harsh with her touches that I began to get fed up with it. I told her it wasn't at all what I wanted and she began to argue that it was, pointing to a picture that had no resemblance whatsoever to my hair. She also told my friend to stop talking and to go sit at the waiting area, which was extremely rude. My friend and I put up a fight with her and she yelled at us, refusing to admit the mistake she'd made. She then told me to leave after burning my scalp while blow drying and told me I didn't have to pay. She also said that I shouldn't go around telling people I cut my hair at her shop because she had cut it exactly the way I had wanted- what BS is that! As usual, Grace and her team did a great job! I am a regular for getting eyebrows threaded by Binda and she always does such a great job!! She is very good at shaping my brows without taking away too much hair. I also got a color and cut with Grace and conditioning with Mamta. I've been getting my hair done by Grace for the past 3-4 years. I get frequent hair cuts but once a year I get the thermal Japanese hair straightening perm done at her place. It lasts for a good year if not more. She does an amazing job and does not over charge her clients compared to other top notch salons in Boston. I would have to say her English proficiency is limited but that has never been a problem for me or my friends. She understands our needs and I've always been satisfied with my hair. I highly recommend the thermal treatment. The price varies upon the length of your hair but other places in Boston can charge up to 500-700. She uses REAL Japanese crystaline products which are imported from Japan. (Trust me, a lot of places lie and use a lower grade product). read more

The first thing I did after getting the cut was to come straight home to write a review on my latest experience. I was expecting to read accounts of horror stories and tons of lamenting voices. But apparently Grace salon treats customer differently or else I can not fathom why it has such glowing reviews from other customers. Maybe the salon is fashioned and staffed solely with women customers in mind, although it is painted boldly outside "men and women" salon. Now my beef is not just with how the end result was far from what I requested. It was the sheer quickness with which the cut was done. It literally took 7-10 minutes and I was ushered to get wash. I was literally hauled off the chair by my arm and directed towards the hair washing sink. After the wash I was greeted with a denouement- $30 please! I was not asked once if I wanted any change or if the cut was to my satisfaction. My only mistake is that I did not offer any resistance. I get tongue-tied in a room fool of beautiful girls and there were tons of beautiful customers lined up on the couch. My back and side burns were not trimmed at all. She just went buzzing with the trimmer and voila- disaster. The tragedy is that I did not even get to know her name. She came, conquered and disappeared. read more

I've walked by this salon countless times during my sojourns through Union Square, but I'd never stopped in until today. My mistake! With an upcoming ten-year reunion, I needed a little upkeep, but couldn't work my schedule around another recommended salon's availability. Trudging home from work, there shone Grace Salon like a glimmering oasis of beauty products and services. As soon as I entered, I knew I'd made a good choice. The facility is clean, smells good, and is decorated sparingly. I hate when things look jumbled! The waxing lady came out right away and escorted me to a private room; the walls don't go all the way to the ceiling, so I guess it's more of a private cubicle? But it was very nice. Mamata, my waxing savior, was warm, efficient, and effective. Got the no-frills waxings I was looking for without going out of my budget. I will definitely return! read more

Threading here is a RIP-OFF. While I take full responsibility for not asking the price before I received the service, I do want to warn any potential customers from making the same mistake! I got my eyebrows threaded here today which took less than 5 minutes. Upon paying for the service, I was charged $15. Fifteen dollars!! Are you crazy? Although I rarely complain, I was stunned and responded with great surprise. When I told the woman that I pay $7 in NYC (at more than 3 nice locations), she said that all of her NYC customers rave about her great prices. REALLY?? Who are these people because I need to let them know that they are wasting their money. This service is WAY too overpriced. I have no complaints about how my brows look. Although, I noted the rough technique (I felt it more than I usually do) and when I got home, there was a spot with significant swelling (which has only happened to me on occasions when the technique was too rough). I unfortunately had a negative experience at Grace Salon. I called on a Saturday around 4 and was glad to hear that they could squeeze me in for a 5:00 appointment. When I went, I had a deep conditioning treatment that involved sitting under a heater. The timer was set for 40 minutes, despite the other stylist stating that it only needed to be set for 20. When I pointed this out, there was no response. After the timer went off, I wanted in my chair for almost 30 minutes before the stylist came over to wash and cut my hair. By the time we got to the haircut, she barely listened to what I wanted and blew through the cut in 10 minutes (I have every thick hair which normally takes a lot longer to cut). They had clearly double booked slots, as my stylists was coloring a woman's hair and trying to run back and forth to me. One of the reasons I wanted to go here was because of the reviews stating that the price was reasonable. When I went to check out she asked for $100. I questioned the price, and she said that the hair cut was $60 and the deep conditioning treatment was $40. The haircut is meh and the experience was very frustrating. Amazing job done on my digital perm. My hair came out exactly how I hoped. she even carefully used a flat iron to bring volume to my roots; an extra step that def made a difference. I was so happy with my last digital perm before I left the area in 2014 that I came back today (driving from an hour away) and it was totally worth the drive! I would reccomend this salon to anyone On price, quality, and that extra attention to detail. read more

Let me first start by stating that I'm Korean and unless you are in New York or LA it is hard to find a good hair place to go to get a decent haircut. I used to go to Scissor Sound but Kay - my stylist left without notifying. I'm also looking for bridal hair and makeup that knows the Korean style. I approached Grace because I had gone to Reliable. I tried Grace out for a digital perm - which she suggested and it came out really good! Grace did talk to me a lot but not in a way that I found to be annoying or too personal. She was nice and considerate. I'm also going to start using the threading service and their skin care/facial service. I have nothing to complain about and I'll be using their services consistently until October, when I'm married. read more

The hair designer accomodated me dropping by without an appointment for a digital perm on the same day! I showed her some of my old picture of my hair for reference and she knew exactly what I wanted. As others mentioned, she doesn't speak English well, but she pays attentions to what you say. After assessing the health of my hair, she said it was strong enough to get a digital perm, even it's very short. She treated my hair with some cream to protect my hair from getting damaged and efficiently carried out the perm. I love the result!! I used the Yelp's $50 voucher for $75 to pay $180 service fee.
