been thinking about a perm for years, deterred only by the cost ($250+) finally bit the bullet, and did a digital perm with Glory. the entire process was nothing but great since I walked in at 4 (and out by 7). i inquired with Glory about the difference between regular perm and digital perm; he explained with expertise and patience, including why it may not have worked on some clients as i referenced other reviews. after about an hour of sitting with the low-heat machine, i was released from it. another liquid (relaxer? i forgot) was added and left on for another while, then I got to rinse, small trim, and voilà! i followed direction of not washing my hair for 3 days, everything seems to have worked out. my perm is the type of soft curls - exactly what I want, as if I spent an hour with a curling iron, but without the high heat and damaged hair. a little product could enhance the look, but not always needed. I also like it that the outcome is low maintenance: was advised to put my hair into quick finger-curls then wrap in towel till dry (usually I just sleep on it), and I'm set to go. almost two months in and my curls are still holding up fine (see pictures for reference). Glory said they should stay until we cut it. but he also advised that I get a trim in a few months' time... which i really don't want to, so we'll see. LoL overall, very happy with the service, and the outcome was exactly what I wanted - totally worth the money! maybe I can even make this into a yearly event! read more

I couldn't be happier with my new digital perm!!!! I love it! It is exactly what I wanted it to be. Stella was happy to start the curl higher than I think many people may ask for and I am so appreciative she gave me just what I wanted!!! I thrilled with the price, especially because the haircut was included in the cost of the perm. when I got home my husband was beaming about my hair! I haven't had so many compliments from him since we were newlyweds! I absolutely love my perm! I was in the salon for several hours. It was a pleasant and relaxing experience. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. There was a bit of a language barrier but it made absolutely no difference because I just pointed to pictures of what I wanted. I brought some pictures in with me plus they had a lot of salon magazines with pictures of hair styles. I've gone to salons dozens of times where everyone is speaking the same language, yet I have come out with something different then I was trying to describe. At Vogo, there was obviously no real problem with the languages because I got EXACTLY what I wanted! I will definitely be going back! This place was small but clean and pretty spacious. There was Chinese music playing in the background and it made the mood nice. The staff were very nice. They mainly speak Chinese, but if you don't speak any then they speak enough English to get along. I had made an appointment for a digital perm and was told it would be $230, but might vary if my hair was longer. They hung up my coat, put my backpack in a drawer, and got me seated pretty quickly. However, I had to wait 20 minutes to even begin speaking to my stylist. I have never had a perm before and usually cut my own hair, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Glory and I talked about preparing my hair and he said that layering it would be best. I showed him a photo of what I was looking for. The shampoo girl was very nice, but she used warm water to rinse when I know you're supposed to use cold water. I had to wait a while in between each step in the process because they schedule more clients than stylists. Glory went back and forth between my hair and another client's hair the entire time. He cut my hair very carefully and with an expert hand. I was a bit nervous because my hair was long and all the same length, but he made it much shorter and layered. In terms of the perm, I am still waiting until I can shower and wash it to see how it really comes out, but so far I am very satisfied with the results! This appointment was supposed to take 3 hours, but it ended up taking 5 because Glory was switching between multiple clients at once. I was really glad I read up on my own about aftercare and how to take care of my perm because he was very quick about giving me instructions. I was told that the total, before any tip, was actually going to be $280. I would definitely come here again because I felt like the staff really wanted to do a good job and that they paid attention to what I wanted. However, next time I will plan on staying here for longer than expected. read more

First time customer and I'm really happy with my perm + cut with Glory. He's the owner, and you can tell, he really takes the time and care to give great layering. I would say this is the best haircut and perm I've received in the U.S., and I've tried a few different places now (probably three I think?). I had always kept trying different places, because I'm very specific about what I want (digital perm, straightening at the top, curls from the ears down, layers), I hadn't found a place yet that could deliver what I wanted. I think my search has ended though. I'll definitely be back here even though it's a bit pricier than I am used to (it was $260 for my digital perm and cut). I walked away feeling like it was worth it, and my hair looked great. BUT, as I should also add here, probably most other people will not be spending as much, because my hair style is pretty unique (and takes 4 hours). Glory was very nice as well, although as others have mentioned, his English isn't great, but it's decent enough. I have going to him for years and I won't go to anyone else!!!!!!!!! The rest of the staffs are very great as well. Very friendly and very good service. Digital perm lasted less than 3 months. First time this has happened to me. I have been getting digital perms for the past 7 years, and had never had any issue. Usually a perm lasts a little more than a year for me. I found this salon after reading the rave reviews on yelp such as the ones below, when I searched for "digital perm" near Boston, as my previous digital perm was in Somerville and I wanted something close to Boston. I got my perm with Glory, based on the rave reviews he got. He was nice, despite being busy. I got the perm done for $280 (my digital perms in the past are around $250, but I didn't mind the slightly higher price as long as the perm looks nice) at the end of October with Glory at Vogo Salon, and by Christmas, my friends were asking me if I was switching to straight hair style from my digital perms, because my hair had looked almost completely straight. I was very surprised too as my digital perms usually last more than a year. I followed Glory's advice strictly after the perm, didn't wash my hair for 3 days, etc. Very surprised that my $280 perm only lasted from October to December, as this has never happened to me in my 7 years getting digital perms from various salons in cities I have lived. This place may be good for other things, but based on my recent experience I would recommend against getting a digital perm here, as it did not last. read more

I had a big company function coming up and with my crazy schedule had neglected to make an appointment for a much needed haircut. I ended up at Vogo because they took walk ins and assured me they could cut my hair if I headed to the salon that afternoon. This place was great, nice and clean. The staff was friendly and the service was very good. The woman who cut my hair did a great job and she didn't rush even with another customer waiting at the end she took her time. I have very thick straight hair and it shows any flaws with the cut so after the blow dry she checked my cut and adjusted it as needed. She helped me choose a slightly different style for my bangs too. One of the best cuts I have had in Boston and it was $35! Amazing! read more

Only good part about this visit was the hair wash. I had asked for long layers and the woman cutting my hair said that was fine. She cuts three inches off the bottom layer (my hair was already in layers but had grown out a lot), then tells me, that that's all she can do, as the rest of my hair was already too layered by the previous person who had cut my hair. Wouldn't that have been a good thing to tell me beforehand? You couldn't see any difference between the bottom layer and the layers that I already had, so I asked her to cut them into normal short layers. I had asked for an English speaking hairdresser, because although I do speak Chinese, I'm not fluent in it. She had probably assumed I didn't speak, and started complaining about my hair and what I was asking for. Hello??? That's pretty rude. She then proceeds to say to Glory (another hair dresser), in Chinese, I don't know how to work with her hair. I don't know how to cut it into layers, can I just do this thing to it? And he said yeah. She picks up the scissors you thin your hair out with and starts to THIN out my hair. First, I have thick hair, understandable that it's hard, but you work at a hair salon, this is your job. Second, If you didn't know how to work with my hair, should you not have said something to ME rather than just BSing your way through it?? Third, I NEVER said anything about thinning out my hair. I told her to stop and not to bother touch it anymore. Looking at my hair now, I have more split ends after the "hair cut" than I walked in with. I've been here before and I've liked the results of my hair...when Glory or the other guy who speaks English pretty fluently cuts it. Not saying you shouldn't come here, but if you do, don't get it cut by the woman. She has orange-ish hair in layers, she has no idea what she's doing. The neutral: - I paid $240 for my cut and digital perm of my medium-length hair. The price is based on how long your hair is and how much of it you want curled (eg. just the ends or the entire length of your hair). - This is my third digital perm, but my first time at Vogo Salon. The positive: - The stylist (I'm guessing Glory) was very through with the hair cut, and took a lot of time with it. - The shampooing "basins" are comfortable. - He did one big curl for bangs, which turned out nicely. - Free parking. The negative: - I did not get the curls that I wanted, which were shown in three different pictures. I wanted big curls throughout the hair, but I ended up with that FOB-y look of top half straight, then medium curls on bottom. As he was rolling, I asked if he had bigger rollers, but he said that if he used the bigger ones, I would get like 1 wave. - Timing. I started 15 min late, then took almost 4 hours because he took on other haircuts during my "incubation" times, which led to me waiting for him for the next step. - He told me not to shampoo for 3 days, but previous stylists immediately washed my hair with no problems. If hair is neutralized properly, shampooing earlier or later shouldn't have an affect. I think I'll go back to my more expensive place, which I have confidence in. read more

First off, this place is more expensive than the other stylish saloons in Chinatown. I wouldn't mind at that all If the hair dressers are good. But that is not even the case to me. The dresser who cut my hair was OK the first time. I wasn't impress and for that price I thought it could do better. But I thought I gave it another try. What a big mistake, I came out looked worst than I went in. My hair style was like a 70 year old woman. I honestly don't what happened. I had to cut my own hair to fix it at home. Glory said my hair was too thick so he gave it a cut and was able to give me a really nice perm. He's really good at cutting hair as well. He isn't afraid to contradict you (esp when I asked if I'd look good with bangs) and instead, offers a compromise. The worst haircut that my girlfriend and I ever had. Stella doesn't understand what I want (and couldn't bother to check with me) even though I speak fluent Chinese to her. When she already went too far with the bad hair cut, then she started to BS her way and said that this looks is better. I went to Vogo Salon for a digital perm from the good reviews. I've had several digital and regular perms in the past. I have long upper back length hair, and the total price was $220 including a quick haircut. My digital perm results were disappointing. My hair came out damaged, frizzy, and mostly straight with unequally distributed waves. The digital perm process was sub par. The perm solution was left in my hair for longer than it should have been. A timer was not used, and on top of that, my stylist Glory was busy with other customers during my perm downtime so not the most attentive. The assistant who put the neutralizer in my hair ran out of neutralizer, and when I asked her if my hair needed more, she said "no it's enough" when clearly most of my hair was looking pretty dry and untouched by the neutralizer. I knew I shouldn't have trusted her! So I came home and no amount of curl cream, curl spray or deep conditioning can revitalize this mess of a nest on my head. I've had perms in other cities and more expensive places in Boston, and I know a well done digital perm looks good on me. Not worth coming here to save a few bucks. read more
