I have come to en.SALON for haircuts in the past with both Nao and Kiyomi (both are wonderful stylists), but recently came in to take advantage of the special deal for the Head Spa Scalp Treatment with their new junior stylist, Danato. Danato took his time in explaining the entire process to me before starting the treatment, which included multiple cleansing washes accompanied by steam throughout. He finished the treatment off with a bouncy blowout. I have thick and coarse caucasian/asian hair, and he was incredibly patient and enthusiastic in creating the look that I wanted. The whole experience was relaxing and pleasant from start to finish. Danato was very attentive, polite and detail-oriented. probably one of the worst haircuts I have gotten I would really like to post a better review.. I was super excited to come in and get my haircut. Honestly, it's probably two part in what I asked for and booking an apprentice stylist. Wanted long curtain bangs and long layers, cut to just below the collar bone. Got a long bob with, albeit, layers... some of the bangs cut dried and curl into my nose. Again, it's part bad ask and bad haircut. The stylist was working with me and tried to achieve what I was asking for, I just wish there was a bit more conversation about how to achieve what I want. Instead, I was impressed with how the stylist reiterated the hair cut back to me in bullet note like fashion, but it didn't initiate more conversation but instead felt like a: I'm telling you what I'm doing so if you dislike it in the end, it's your fault not mine. Giving 4 stars because I only had the stylist the one time! Don't knock this place until you try it, but this was my experience. I'm posting some reference pics along with my haircut. Kayako did a great job! My appt was rescheduled a couple of times due to COVID but once I got in, my experience was great. There was a slight mishap as hundreds of appts had to be rebooked and I happened to be accidentally double booked. I opted to wait while the other appt got their hair cut and it was a pleasant experience. I was set up in a corner socially distanced away and provided water. As a preface, I had booked my original balayage appt using a gilt city deal that expired in May and found out that the salon apprentice that was supposed to do my hair was no longer at the salon. Was lucky enough to have the owner do my hair. The whole process took about 2.5 hours and Kayako explained every step of the way from the type of bleach she was using, the type of toner colors, and the effect it would have on my hair. I ended up up leaving with a nice curled blondish new do :) Would def come again and get my hair retoned or even try a new hair color. Kayako was great to chat with and really kind and the salon was very clean. They provided masks in ziplocked bags and hand sanitizer. They also sanitize and wipe the seats before ever customer and do temp checks on clients. read more

I love Kayoko! Making an appointment with her was easy, as she is very responsive by email, as well as flexible with scheduling despite her full roster of clients. I came on Sunday evening, and despite being the last client, she was still cheery and patient. She took the time to carefully look at and break down the elements in the photos I'd brought and confirm whether I wanted long bangs, whether I wanted layers, etc. It was also fun talking to her about restaurants in the area and my recent trip to her home country (Japan). My hair looks great curled and uncurled, and I will probably come back for a digital perm with Kayoko. The haircut took about an hour, and it was $54 after the new customer discount and before tip. She takes cash or Venmo. I came back for a digital perm, and after seeing the photos I'd saved to my phone, she told me that I was better off continuing to use a curling iron rather than getting a perm, that it wasn't going to turn out the way I wanted and it would be a waste of my time and money and damage my hair for no good reason. The pricing was a complete shock to us when my son went to get a haircut. We've previously been there and the cuts were all good, the staff were all very friendly too. However, this time around, my son was looking for a haircut and wanted a perm, so we called to have a discussion. We thought we would get a consultation and a price listing before our appointment, but we got neither. When he went, the atmosphere was good and the haircut and perm was fine, but the pricing they told us was way too much and we were uninformed of it. I am so glad I found this place on Yelp! Kayoko is amazing and super friendly. I got an Air Wave Perm in Japan in April last year and the curl was in the process of falling out. I'd debated getting it redone, but I just missed my straight hair. We had an initial consultation to determine if my hair could handle the straightening process (yes) and set up an appointment. She's pretty booked up as she's currently the only stylist at her salon right now (she's hiring!); but I set a date and was ready to go. On the day of the appointment, she was very thorough and explained the process to me. I appreciated that she walked me through the products she used on me. She really values quality and is so knowledgeable about hair -- we talked about the direction of my hair swirl and how that affects the hairstyles that I can get. She was trained in Japan, so we also talked about the training process for stylists (it's super rigorous and includes an apprenticeship) and how it as difficult for her to find stylists for her salon. So, if you're talented stylist -- I definitely recommend applying to her salon. Overall, the process took less time than either of us thought it would and it wasn't badly priced, either. I paid around $100-150 for my shoulder-length hair. My hair looks good a month later -- it's so soft and doesn't feel like I've had it permed, then straightened either. I've been coming to En Salon for a year now and I can say I am never disappointed with my experience! I had an appointment scheduled before Covid hit but unfortunately it was cancelled. Nao personally reached out to me to reschedule my appointment. I highly recommend asking for Nao. She is fluent in Japanese and English. She is quick, efficient, friendly, and most of all consistent during her cuts. I was informed of their sanitation processes and felt very safe in the salon. The salon has a lot of open space so they can definitely follow the 6ft apart rule. It is also very aesthetically pleasing!! I will definitely be back requesting Nao for another haircut soon. :) read more

Update 8/7/20: I went back to En Salon in mid-July to get my hair cut short. Nao did a fantastic job, and I am really happy with the result! En Salon is a pretty small place, but they had social distancing measures in the space and all the hairstylists and customers are wearing protective masks. In some cases, the hairstylists wear face shields. Nao checked my temperature before the appointment, and I felt very safe in the salon throughout the appointment. I went to En Salon for a digital perm and cut with Kayoko. What a fantastic experience - Kayoko is wonderful, and so friendly! Before the hair cut, we talked through exactly what I wanted for the perm. She also gave me an honest assessment of my hair texture and thickness, and explained how she would perm my ends, which are a little damaged. I really appreciated her honesty and felt like my hair was in good hands. It's been a few days since my appointment, and I am really happy with the results! My shampoo/scalp massage was sooooooo relaxing. She took the time to dicuss her process along the way and made sure we were agreeing on the same hair style :) The salon is spotless and very well designed. I had a great first time experience at this salon today. It's conveniently located near the Brookline Hills T station and I over-estimated the time it would take to get there. I was too early so I would recommend arriving right on the time of your appointment. All of the hair cutting tools were sanitized and in a solution when not being used, and proper care was taken to sanitize other things like the seats. The hairdressers also wear and change their gloves which I appreciated. I came to get my bangs cut by Nao and am really happy with how they turned out. She took care to ask me if I wanted adjustments to what she was doing, but after only 15 minutes she gave me what I wanted. She was also really friendly! Overall happy that I came here and looking forward to coming back for a haircut soon. read more

Allen is great - he's very honest and helpful. He does a fantastic job with my color at a very reasonable price and is a pleasure to spend time with. Given how dry my ends were getting due to the winter and bleach from balayage he recommended a hydrating treatment that was reasonably priced. It's the best my ends have felt in months! I had tried other over the counter hair masks (living proof) which did nothing. I've become a big fan of the Milbon products they use which are a good price and way better than bumble & bumble and Oribe products I've tried in the past. Overall I would definitely recommend this salon compared to overpriced options in downtown Boston- the staff are lovely are knowledgeable. I wanted a digital perm and had heard that they were good. But they wouldn't give me a price over the phone because I have very long hair. So, I went in for an evaluation and they seemed very nice. She gave me a price and we made an appointment. Unfortunately, she had some sort of emergency and had to go to Japan, so they canceled my appointment and asked to reschedule. So, I rescheduled. And, I texted the day before the appointment to confirm and received an affirmative response. I got down here to find that they do not have my appointment after all. It is a 45-minute drive for me each way so I have now wasted 3 hours driving back and forth from the salon. I do not recommend. read more

This review is for Kayoko's hair straightening and I am writing this after the 72 hours I waited to wash my hair after the straightening. I am so so happy and ecstatic that I washed my hair, let it air dry, and my hair is straight! My hair naturally is curly/wavy and after years of flat ironing, the curl pattern was ruined. It was hard to maintain and I have also taken to working out 4-5 times a week so it was difficult to maintain my hair. I had had enough and wanted something 'permanent' for this situation. I looked up Japanese hair straightening on yelp and after going through a couple of places I found Kayoko. Her yelp page had no reviews of the Japanese straightening, but after going to her website, I decided to take a chance. The first step was a consultation. She saw me and said that yes my hair was a good candidate for it and I was excited to book something, but Kayoko is pretty popular. I had to book almost a month and a half out. On the day of the appointment, Kayoko explained the process and got to work. The whole process was very quick, mind you I have short, thin hair, so I was there from 11:00 AM and left before three, and the process included a haircut that she suggested I needed. After everything, she suggested that I not get another touch up until 6 months. Overall I'm so happy. The next time I get it done, I'm going to ask to make it a little straighter, Kayoko suggested that I shouldn't make my hair stick straight, and although I love how it dries now, I think I would want it to be stick straight, I just love the look! read more

I have thick long hair and usually my haircuts take a long time and the hairdresser doesn't take enough hair off and I'll have to get it cut again sooner than I want. However, Alan did a great job and I really feel like he listened to what I wanted. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. Both Alan and Kayoko are super friendly and even though my cut was with Alan, Kayoko gave a second opinion and made me feel very confident in how the cut was going to come out. I knew I wanted to get a digital perm, but all the reputable salons in Boston (especially in Back Bay) seemed to have exorbitantly high prices. Thank goodness I found Kayoko! She is a Japanese stylist who worked in Tokyo for a decade and then worked at what is now Defi on Newbury Street for several years before starting her own business. She operates solo and rents space from Da Da Hair Studio six days a week. From what I understand, she travels to customers' homes as well. My experience was absolutely amazing. Kayoko first gave me a shampoo and cut, and I don't think I've ever had a hair stylist as skilled as Kayoko! She was moving her hands super fast, and when she was done, everything fell into place perfectly. I'm definitely going back to her for my regular haircuts. The perm was great as well. I wasn't quite sure what kind of shape I wanted, but Kayoko understood that I wanted something more natural. She also gave me a ton of styling and maintenance tips, which I appreciated a ton. I was really pleased with the results, as well as the price for the haircut + digital perm: $167 (which included a 10% discount, just for being a first-time customer). What?! I'm pretty sure it would have cost me at least $250 at Mie Higashimoto, for my length of hair. Anyway, I think it's a shame that Kayoko hasn't gotten the Yelp buzz that she deserves, because she's really awesome... quite possibly the best hair stylist I've encountered in my entire life. I was very skeptical due to the limited reviews but I really wanted to get a digital perm. Kayoko is wonderful, attentive, and is skilled in her craft. I chose the digital perm (I have done this perm else where in the past) and haircut. It came out lovely and better than I had hoped for. Kayoko explained the whole process and gave me tips in order to keep my hair healthy. It's been over a month since the perm and the curls are still beautiful. She also allows appointments by email, which is very convenient. I deducted one star because of the current difficulty to schedule another appointment. I usually cut my hair on a whim and I really want my hair cut by Kayoko, but not sure I can wait 3 weeks for an appointment. read more
