Ludy has colored n cut my hair since Aug 2022. I was thrilled to find a colorist/ stylist that didn't break the bank AND demonstrated mad good color and style skills. I was over the moon , and despite Ludy's cool demeanor , I was effusive with my delight in her and the work. I wanted this relationship to work for as long as possible. Honeymoon didn't last. We all know how hard it is to find an " affordable " salon in Boston area, for cut/ color thats also convenient to home, Brookline. I felt I hit the Hair lottery, I swear. Ludy works FT in healthcare and drives in from Worcester on Saturdays only, to work at Wavelengths for salon owner Neeve ( wrong spelling I'm sorry) She was very but good until she wasn't. Shown here is my first cut n color Aug 13 2022, so loved it all. Looked amazing. The other three pics is how my hair looks today. This cut / color mess took 3.5 hours and cost $ 45 bucks more ? This Saturday instead of two clients she had four, maybe five ; different clients at various stages of color n cut, Neeve get a receptionist! Know this , At wavelengths you can only pay with cash or Venmo! I was charged a whopping $270 bucks for what had been $225.00 previously. That is affordable , as ridiculous as it sounds. Plus I gave Ludy a 40 buck tip.. When I asked Ludy why it was so much more, she couldn't answer except to say " prices went up.." I wasn't going to debate it, she was busy and I had already been there 3.5 hours and wanted to go . I texted Ludy. At both the beginning and end of the text I made sure to be positive, upbeat, flattering but address concerns about not being informed of price increases prior to treatments. $45 buck is a big increase and the strawberry hue on my hair is what I paid 270 bucks NOT to have. See pics. Ludy couldn't / wouldn't accept any responsibility and reacted to my text like a spoiled brat . Why? Because I questioned her and had the audacity to ask her a question. She called NEEVE in hysterics of her trauma over my text. She demanded Neeve call me ( who works for whom?) and explain to me that Ludy was so upset that she refuses to do my hair any longer.WTH? I did nothing so egregious to be banished from wavelength salon. But alas I am banned from a tacky salon on CC Brookline. Neeve said there is an updated price list but I told her I never noticed one? Neeve so generously volunteered that prices did go up and there is also this "discretionary , flexible " pricing . It depends on different lengths, textured hair or needing more foils etc. Ludy is immature if she cannot be asked a question without banishing a paying client. Neeve is over a barrel and would rather compromise the integrity of her salon then upset Ludy. The Venmo and cash as the only payment options is odd for a full season, long established store. Don't go. Find a better place. If you go avoid Ludy . Neeve doesn't take new clients. read more

I have been going to Waveleights and their previous place (Hairall) since for a span of 40 years. I always enjoyed going there and the employees were respectful and accommodating. Two years ago I called them for an appointment with Niamb (phonetically Neve) who has serviced. Me for at least fifteen years. I talked to the receptionist who said they would put me on a list to get an appointment. That must be a long list because I never received a call back. Because of pandemic I had not gone there for a year. I have lung disease and stayed away. I still wear a mask in public. How they could treat a longtime client that way is beyond me. I would go there in a minute if they would take me because Niamey and Fiana are such great people and do amazing work. I hope to be able to return And get their great service once again. read more

I decided to go to wavelengths because my friend told me about their student discount and because Lorilee had such great reviews. I went in to get a trim, but I ended up talking with Lorilee about what I wanted my hair to look like in terms of both cut and color. She understood exactly what I wanted and guaranteed that she could get me there. As you can see in my before picture, I had a weird ombré thing going on with a chunk of orangey dyed hair and it was not cute at all. Asian hair is pretty hard to turn blonde, which is why the orange shows up a lot. I wanted to fix it to the balayage I originally wanted, but I thought it would take too much time and cost way too much money. Thankfully, wavelengths has reasonable prices and it wasn't expensive at all. I am so, so happy with how my hair turned out and shocked that Lorilee was able to correct it all in just about 2 hours. She fixed the orange, toned my hair, and gave me a beautiful balayage with even lighter blonde ends. I highly recommend Lorilee--she really knows what she's doing!!! read more

Came in for a super simple haircut. The person who cut my hair was one of the least friendly people I have ever met. I have really fine, easily damaged hair and the stylist yanked and yanked on it with a comb. Charged $30 for a 15 minute start to finish haircut that didn't include blow drying (I left with it wet) and then acted annoyed when I asked about a student discount (which they advertised when I called). I wasn't looking for a luxurious spa experience, I came here because I could afford it on a grad school budget. I guess you get what you pay for? In my opinion, spend the extra money and go somewhere else where they at least pretend to care. read more

All I have to say is that Lorilee is a hair GODDESS. If you are thinking of getting your hair colored, I cannot recommend Lorilee more than anyone. I waited a month to write this review because I wanted to see how the color would hold up after a few washes, and guess what. It still looks the exact same if not BETTER. The reason I love Lorilee is because she takes time and care into making sure your hair will still look good even months after walking out of her chair. I had previously bleached hair from years of red color, and she used three different levels of bleach for three different sections of my hair because each section needed a different strength. Just applying the bleach in itself is a lengthy process, but Lorilee took the time and effort to ensure the integrity of my hair. Above all, her priority is making sure my hair still remained HEALTHY. After the bleaching process, she toned my hair to a beautiful silver purple so that once my color faded, it would still look epic. When applying the color, she made sure the blue was saturated throughout my head so I would get a weird patch here or there. I sat in the salon for a whole day but it was SO worth it. I love my new hair, and I owe it all to Lorilee. She's such a sweetheart, and has a true passion for hair. Sitting in her chair, you can see her eyes sparkle when you give her a challenge, like I did. I gave her the two hardest colors to do on my hair type, and she managed to work a miracle and create this epic masterpiece. For anyone looking to do some awesome color, you will not be disappointed if you come to Wavelengths!! I so much wanted to like this salon. It's convenient and they had availability and are open on Sundays. I went years ago to Fiona who gave me a great short haircut. Not so this time. I went for a trim last week with curly hair. My hair was a bit longer than usual. Asked for a cut to make sure ends were even that I could wear curly but told her I usually wear it straight in the winter. Fiona said that she couldn't cut the layers evenly. Huh?? Last week had it blown dry with curls at my main salon before my regular hairdresser went out of town my "regular hairdresser" commented on the unevenness of the cut but made me look stunning anyway. Then today called Wavelengths and asked for a blow dry with Lorelei Who I've heard is terrific. Alas she is on maternity leave. So I asked if there was anyone else really good with curly hair. The receptionist was very pleasant, suggested another stylist. I decided to take my chances and go with her suggestion. I asked specifically for it to be straight straight at the top with waves in the back and slightly curled under in the front. After 50 minutes of trying parts of the hair wet with the dry hair (a totally bad idea for curly hair) my hair was totally blah and pouffy. She kept asking me what I wanted and when I said something did the opposite barely straightening my hair leaving tons of frizz. For instance, I asked for really straight especially on top by the roots. She ignored the requests, saying things like "Everyone wants volume." When I perhaps looked a bit unhappy with the frizzy uneven blow dry (with a large area of puff in the back), the hairdresser Hayley said she would redo one side and "use a straight iron on the front". When she was done, I was so disappointed that my hair looked no better then when I try to do it. I am a teacher and$44 wasted almost made me cry. She also left to go do someone else's hair. A bit odd but ok. I thought I would do a couple of strands with the straightener to show her what I was hoping for. I was gently chastised by the receptionist and given a look by another stylist. My hair was straightened in those areas however. Hayley came back and gingerly took a few strands using the straightening iron from about 2-3 inches from the roots. Again I asked her to try to use the straightener close to the roots, but didn't happen. I left and ended up putting my hair in a ponytail and will probably end up washing out all $44 of the blow dry tonight. To add to the disappointment was I was charged extra for the straightening (?) after being told by Fiona (stylist who did the cut) that the cost of a blow dry was $30 not $37. Not a great place for a haircut either if you don't have straight hair. It will take someone to cut the hair evenly and at an angle that will work. I am used to an amazing group of women at a salon in East Cambridge where the staff are Brazilian and Dominican and truly understand black, Spanish, curly thick hair. Wavelengths was such a disappointment. No one asked if I was ok with the blow dry or offered to redo or fix. Prices and convenience may seem reasonable (and I've heard great things about Lorelei), but I'd definitely go elsewhere. read more

The stylist was very friendly, and my hair does look good. But I did not get quite what I asked for. I asked for ombre, and showed a photo. I did ask for an alteration to the photo, noting that I wa tes it to start as high up as possible while still keeping the same "low maintenance" feel as it grows. However, what I got was highlights. I wanted the bottom half or 2/3 to be basically entirely blonde, but instead I just have very thin highlights (not a look I prefer on myself vs. Thicker highlights). She even called it "highlights" at one point while she was half way through. I tried to ask her, when I noticed she was just basically doing highlights, if it would fade in, and she said "what do you mean?" Oh boy.... I knew then we had miscommunicated about what I wanted. That said, see my photos below: the first photo I showed her and the second is my after photo. Again I think it looks nice and professionally done, just not what I asked for and that is always a bummer. Again my stylist was also quite friendly (cant recall her name). I only wish she'd taken a little more time in the beginning to confirm what I wanted, asking questions and such to make sure we were on the same page. She quickly was off to mix the color as soon as I showed her the photo and I wasnt confident we were on the same page. So it is perhaps partly on me that i didnt speak up sooner and more firmly, but at the same time i think a stylist should be skilled at assessing a photo and making sure what a client wants. It seems they do certain styles well but maybe not ombre (or maybe it was just a pure miscommunication?). read more

Big thumbs down Wavelengths. Needed a blowout this afternoon for a special event tonight. Recieved a voicemail 4 hours pre appointment, telling me they would have to move my appointment forward. Immediately called back and was told staff were finishing early and that If I wanted to keep my appointment I would need to come THREE hours early. No I could not come in 3 hrs earlier than scheduled, as I was at work. Now due to the short notice, I will have to attend a wedding with dirty hair. Not the end of the world, but poor service nevertheless. Wavelengths, I guess business is booming if you can afford to piss clients off like this with no real apology. There is a plethora of Brookline salons with empty appointment books. Good luck surviving after the next lockdown. read more

They have really put in a number of safety measures to keep the employees and customers safe. Customers wait outside, get called in at the door, get their temperature checked and then sign a form saying they have not felt ill recently. Besides that, Ludi is my go-to. She knows my hair and what I like. She always does an amazing job and makes sure both sides are even, unlike some places/hairdressers. The prices have gone up recently ($40) but I think they're still on the lower end of getting a wash and cut. read more

Nope... not for me. I made an appointment and went in for a trim. I waited not too long around 10-15minutes after my appointment time. Got my hair washed and the cutting started happening. The hairdresser was extremely rough with my hair and just ripped the comb through. The scissors she used was unsanitary, it had hair from the previous client visibly on it. Throughout the entire cut she would not stop talking about how damaged my hair was. The hair cut was done, hair still wet and I sat in a drying chair. There was hair all over my shirt. My hair cut ended up being really choppy to say the least. I plan to tie my hair up for the next few days. Total was $32 and I tipped $5. I don't know why I bothered to. I cut less than 2 inches total. Definitely not worth the time or money. read more

Really reasonably priced and I loved my hair cut! I wish I was still a student so I could take advantage of their student discounts too. It's also really convenient that you can pay with Venmo, although they don't take credit cards. I hate getting haircuts. I don't know, but I just never feel like dropping $100+ dollars seems fair when my hair is so lame. I truly needed a haircut and called the salon. They fit me right in. I saw Sinead and let me just say - she was AWESOME. We talked about what I wanted and what my problems were. She agreed and got to work. She was extremely personable and told me some products to look into. She wasn't pushy with trying to sell me salon products but very knowledgeable. Apparently I have been blow drying my hair wrong all these 30 years. She showed me the correct way and let me tell you it makes a difference. Let me start by saying that I'm a guy who used to cut his own hair in the bathroom with clippers and two mirrors. Mostly because I hated paying for something I could (somewhat) do myself, and I have a little bit of barbershop anxiety. So be it. OK, with that out of the way, I love Wavelengths for a few reasons. 1: its 20 dollars for a guy to get just a basic haircut 2: its a good haircut. I go to Sam when I go. She makes going to get a haircut a decent time. Minimizes the anxiety when your hairdresser is interesting. 3: i can usually get a walk-in appointment. So if you're like, one of these people who goes and gets 80 dollar haircuts, I cannot verify or deny that Wavelengths is good. If your a Joe Schmoe who needs their hair cut by people who know what they're doing, but don't play it up like it's NYC, then Wavelengths is right on. read more

My friend Eric got me to go to Vera here. That was over a year ago and I've stuck with her ever since. She's incredible. And it's a superb deal. I've had very very very few places/hairdressers who I feel when I'm leaving that they did a good job and that I liked what they did perfectly. In January of 09 I went in and told Vera to do whatever she wanted. And I got compliments for at least a month. Hence why I'm loyal (yes, I guess that sounds a bit ridiculous but that's me.) Anyway, if you do go to Wavelengths, I HIGHLY recommend Vera. I don't know much/anything about the other staff members but I stand by Vera. She is great because I have very annoying hair in terms that theres lots of little cowlicks and its very thick and she knows exactly what to do everytime. Anyways. I'm on the prowl for a new stylist, and since I live near Coolidge Corner I decided to give Wavelengths a shot. I walked in without an appt on a Friday afternoon and Kelly, who was at the front desk, immediately took me back to cut my hair. (They don't have a receptionist--the stylists answer the phone themselves. First sign of trouble.) Kelly was sweet and friendly, but her work station was dirty. There was a towel there featuring hair from a previous cut and a pair of scissors that had not been cleaned. Kelly used a different pair to cut my hair but did not remove the dirty towel or old scissors. (Strike two.) And my cut? Mehh. I have short, superfine flyaway hair, and asked for a pixie cut (came in with photos to show what I wanted). I walked away with a kind of lesbian soccer-mom do (I was going for more of a Michelle Williams vibe). For $25 it's in the Supercuts range, but like they say, you get what you pay for. The girl has talent, that's not what I'm contemplating here, but I got a cut that I didn't really ask for. I asked her to trim a little and shape the front. She trimmed a lot and shaped a lot. Like I said, the cut is fine, it's just not what I asked for. My stylist wasn't very nice. I didn't know her name til the end of the appointment. The way she cut my hair, you have to blow dry it to fix is which.. is fine.. whatever. I mean, I wanted a quick $20 cut but my cut ended up being long and $50. I've been going to Wavelengths for about 11 years now. At first I went through a few stylists as they kept leaving but then came to Neve. Neve has been cutting my hair ever since. We actually laugh that it's been over 10 years since she first cut my hair. I now have many of my friends going to see her. Wavelengths is great. I am a dude who rocked Supercuts (or equivalent) for the first decade of my adult life. Heading into my late 20s, I realized that I wanted a little more from my haircuts...but wasn't in a position to pay a ton at some salon. After trying out a few places, Wavelengths is perfect. For guys, the price is a bargain for a wash and salon-level cut. Ludy is fantastic - she is incredibly pleasant, always cuts my hair well (even when I change my desired hairstyle), and is efficient without being rushed. She even told me how long before my wedding to come in. I like that I can make an appointment, but if I am walking by and stop in she might be able to get me in. All in all, I am very happy. I'm the kind of person who hates getting her hair cut with a passion (not the results, mind you, just the process- small talk, sitting straight with nothing to watch/read, wet hair, ugh soooo not someting I look forward to), so I only go when I absolutely have to (read: once every 1.5 years or so, just to trim off the dead ends). I like Wavelengths because they deliver just the no-frills quick trim I'm looking for, for really cheap (we're talking $25 plus tip which is clutch, I can't really justify paying more than that just for a quick trim anyways). I've gone here for the last 3 or 4 cuts, and have gotten exactly what I wanted from each of the various stylists I've had. Usually I just walk in (not too big on planning ahead for trims, I tend to wake up one day and decide it's been long enough) and haven't had to wait more than like, 15 minutes. Keep in mind that while I do have long wavy thick hair, I rarely have it washed during a cut, NEVER have it styled/blow-dried afterwards, have only had it ever dyed at a salon twice in my life (I DIY with semi-perm), and have had the same hair style since I was in high school, so we're talking bare-bones basics here, which Wavelengths is good at. Anything more than that, I can't speak to. read more

I have never been to this salon, but I took a relative there for a much needed cut and color as a birthday present. The base coloring that covered her grays was not even and was much lighter than her natural color. Also, the color job seemed rushed. Good price for coloring, though. Decor is very Eighties. Staff was friendly. If they don't update the decor, the least they can do is begin accepting credit cards, even for a small fee. read more

I have wonderful service here. I have been very particular about my hair person. Even when I lived in SF I would still only get my hair cut with my person in NYC. When I moved to Boston I decided to try Wavelengths as it's close to my apartment and had good Yelp reviews and I am so glad I did! I get my hair cut and color done by Sinead who is fabulous. Such a sweetheart and does a great job on both the cut and full highlights. I constantly get compliments on my hair color even if it's weeks after I get it done. I love Wavelengths! I worked in a boutique on Newbury Street for almost 4 years and still could never stomach the idea of paying $300-500 for a cut and color, seriously you're crazy! So finally I found this wonderful inexpensive place, and it's only a 5 minute walk from my house! I've been going to Neve for over a year now, she's fabulous always does a great job and makes sure she takes her time to do everything thoroughly (I've literally spent like 4 hours there). I've recommended her to a lot of my friends and now me and 3 of my girl friends are regulars, AND she remembers all of us and all our stories and will ask about the other girls. I have to admit I'm a sucker for that stuff when it comes to hairdressers. We all get color or highlights and different cuts and they all come out great. Only note, it is NOT a fancy place, if you're looking to get a neck massage and a $50 bottle of shampoo then you should head to one of those salons on Newbury Street. Oh and it's cash only, so go to the ATM first, trust me it's worth it. A cut and color (depending on type, full color, highlights etc.) always runs me $80-120 including tip. read more

Prices are decent; I was quite surprised. Loralee was a sweetheart the whole time. I ended up having a short-cut that I ended up falling in love with. I went here exactly once. I had injured myself at the time and could not get my hands wet for about a week, so I thought I would go get a haircut, and wash since I couldn't wash myself. I also had some brassy looking highlights growing out and wanted my hair colored back to a more natural look. I asked the hair dresser to please dye my hair back to it's natural color (which you could see very clearly in the roots) and to give me a trim and a blow dry since I couldn't wash my hair myself....well, I got exactly the opposite. My hair was all dyed a brassy looking blonde color and it looked horrible. Somehow she misunderstood me and thought I wanted my hair dyed the color of the highlights. The cut was nice and she did a nice job with the blow dry so I was almost starting to feel OK about it. Then she puts in the greasiest mousse or gel into my hair (she says it will keep my hair looking and feeling good for a few days since I can't shower)...instead it made me feel dirty and greasy. I had to have my friend wash my hair the very same day because it felt so gross! I left the salon really bummed out and had my hair dyed about a week later at another salon. I would give it one star, but the cut and blow dry was nice, and very reasonably priced. The experience with the dye job will forever horrify me though. read more

I have been going to Vera for over a year and she is one of the most consistent hairdressers in terms of both color and cut. I am blonde and I am very, very picky- and blonde is really hard to get perfectly consistent results, but Vera does it! Every time I go to her I leave happy. She is extremely precise and listens to you- in fact she is not satisfied unless your hair is exactly what you want. She is also extremely professional and a pleasure to see regularly. Context: I have straight Type 1B hair. My hairstyle is curtains, with my hair parted where my hair naturally wants to part (left of my nose). My hair length was medium; hair reached my nose. Instructions to the stylist was: taper the sides and the lower portion of my back, form a converging inverted triangle in the middle portion of my back, and as for my hair in the middle (not sides), after my hair parts into 2 naturally, to cut my hair so that my hair tips form a slight forward angular tilt (same direction as one's jawline), to be seen from both sides. The Verdict: Stylist managed to follow the instructions to some degree before making errors. Before even cutting the hair, her first error was using too much conditioner since my hair type is straight. This is bad because my hair would get too silky, not get weighted down, and would be all over the place, and the stylist should have known this. My taper request was fulfilled very poorly: my hair does not have the gradual visual hair density change from little hair to some hair, but rather is more like a set of stairs where the height suddenly changes. My side burns were especially done poorly since she did not taper it, and she missed the lower portion, which I would need to manually fix. The inverted triangle request was done decently, although the shape resembles a slight semicircle. For my middle hair (not sides) after it's natural two way parting, it is clear that my stylist overcutted, making it difficult for me to continue with my curtains hairstyle: my left side is a half inch above my ear, and my right side is one inch above my ear, meaning that she did not cut it symmetrical, not to mention the forward angular tilt angles did not match. I also had to manually fix my left side since some strands of hair did not align uniformly. Overall, stylist made errors, yet I can't blame the stylist since this place likely would not have much experience with my type of men's hair. I really like this place. I've only been for a few haircuts and bang trims but I always feel listened to and have never had a bad experience or cut. I've been seeing Fiona for a few years now. She does a great job cutting my thick hair and doing just as I ask, even when I'm very picky! Due to wrist issues Fiona doesn't blow dry or style hair but I sit in the chair dryer before I leave for about 15 minutes which is the perfect solution.
