I didn't have a good experience here. I have straight hair and a simple haircut. I told Fenny what I was looking for, which is thick ends with a few long layers and some front framing pieces, and 2 inches off. I DID provide several reference photos at the start of the visit, and we discussed them. I told her I didn't care about dead ends and I didn't want to go too short. She is one of those hair dressers who ONLY cares about dead ends and proceeded to chop off 4 inches of my hair. When I tried to explain the difference between what I wanted and what she had done she insisted that I must have misunderstood (? I've been getting the same haircut for years?). Then she tried saying that I didn't state what I wanted at the start. Finally, she said that it was my hair's fault, for being too tangly (???). I left the salon in tears and with lopsided hair with far more layers than I wanted and thin ends. I think she probably is used to giving similar haircuts to most of her clientele which is just not the haircut I wanted. Also, she still charged me $60 (versus a $70 original price) despite the fact that this was not at all what I wanted. I walked into a salon down the street and before I'd even said anything a stylist looked at the back of my head and said "oh girl. What happened to your hair?" It was THAT uneven and choppy. The cherry on top of all of it is that I tried pointing out a hole in the layers to Fenny, and she gaslit me and said 'oh that's just because your hair is pulled in front of your shoulders.' When I adjusted my hair at the salon I ran to to have them fix my hair, the stylist immediately said 'why is there a hole there?' It was wild. I left a review on Google too, and Fenny once again seemed unable to apologize without somehow implying that I made a mistake by not communicating clearly (despite the reference photos I provided and the instructions I gave before, during, and after the cut). Please consider going somewhere else unless you're interested in a cut that absolutely removes all dead ends and includes a ton of layers. read more

Immediately upon entering the shop, you're greeted by Bella excited to see another customer. I wanted something simple, a straight cut which Fenny did in a quickness. We skipped the washing and shampooing although it is offered as her services. As she was combing and prepping my hair, I neglected to tell her I had an undercut. She offered to clean it up (which honestly I didn't plan to do anything with it) but she did a great job with it. My hair was long and needed some weight off of it, plus the ends were dry and dead due to me playing a lot of beach volleyball. She even had recommendations to help with my hair care when I play for hours under the sun which I appreciated. Within 30 mins I was in and out of her shop, she doesn't rush you out or try to convince you to do other things other than what you want to do. Prices are affordable and she offers options to pay for her services. Personality is bold and such a welcoming and happy environment. First, I have to tell you that Fenny is an absolute gem. Fenny will bend over backwards to accommodate you. I wandered down here because I had some downtime before my Amtrak train left and the store was closed, but I called anyway. She was at home, but she jumped in the car and told me she would be at her store in 30 minutes! I was looking for a high quality haircut without all the pompous trappings that usually come with it, and Fenny delivered. I usually get my haircut from Fenny herself, who is high-spirited and friendly while being fast, efficient and professional. I've also worked with another stylist there who was also very good. Very unsatisfied with the hair cut received by Fenny. I asked that she cut 3 inches off my hair and she ended up cutting almost 6 inches off!! I told her the length of was okay but she continued to cut, and the layers she gave me are very uneven and choppy. She continued to cut my hair even after I asked her to stop and she even thinned out my hair so much that she removed 60% of my hair!! She gave me a long bob which was NOT at all what I requested. I had to stop her since she kept thinning my hair and cutting a lot more hair off than I had requested. She also said she has been cutting hair for 30 years, if that's the case, she should know that you listen to your client when they ask you to stop. I find a lot of hair stylists believe they have free agency to do whatever on a clients hair just because they have the scissors, but I didn't give her free realm to cut my hair really short with very high choppy layers. Fenny is a absolutely terrific, so great to have right around the corner! Always ready and willing to take care of you as soon as she can - which can be like almost immediately. I hadn't been to her since prior to covid and finally needed a real cut for a last minute wedding :-) . I didn't know covid had forced her into 'by appointment only' mode so knocked on her door, a little surprised to find it locked even though the lights were on. She appeared promptly, explained the need for an appointment but said I could have one in 1/2 hour just as her next appointment showed up at the door. She helped book it on my phone and when I returned exactly 1/2 hour later, she was there opening the door for me again! Fenny is always happy, efficient and skilled in her work, looking to satisfy you completely offering suggestions as very appropriate. And, may I also say, she is very economical! Fenny is a nice lady but I can't take that with me when I leave the salon. Only a haircut remains. She talks and laughs and makes you feel like your mom is cutting your hair but the haircut was mediocre. Its really a 3.5 but I like to give barbers the benefit of the doubt, cause usually its me just not manning up and correcting them. Fennys was very decently priced but the second time I came here she was no where to be seen. Took 20 min of me just sitting there and waiting and some broken english on the part of the employee to tell me that they weren't cutting hair that day. Not very good service without Fenny there. After bouncing around from barbershop to barbershop, I finally found a consistent place to get my haircut, and I couldn't be any happier! Fenny always takes her time to understand what type of haircut I am looking for, and even when I don't know what I want, she works with me to make great recommendations based on our conversation. I tried Fenny's Salon a couple of months ago, after seeing reviews on Yelp. It's relatively close to where I live but I had to drive my boyfriend's car to get here (he was out of town), which wasn't a problem because it was pretty easy to find parking. I guess I went at a good time because Fenny was able to take me in right away. She asked me if I wanted a wash, and I said yes. I didn't think much of it since most washes are included with a haircut, but I guess I shouldn't have assumed that. I know many yelpers have talked about how great her scalp massages were, but I personally did not enjoy it. It hurt too much! It felt more like a painful scalp scratch rather than a massage... It hurt so much I cringed every time. The haircut was great. She took a lot of time on me, even though customers stared strolling in one by one. I was really pleased with the cut she gave me and thought I had found The Place; the place where I can get a haircut I like and works on a student budget. But when I went to pay at the counter, Fenny said it was $40! I guess that's a reasonable price for a haircut in Boston but I came in under the impression that it would be about half that price. I assume it cost more because of the shampoo/dry and maybe next time if I just get a cut, it would be much cheaper. Overall, I was happy but my wallet was not. Even though I liked my haircut, I don't think I will go again unless I desperately need a haircut and can't wait until the next time I go home, where I can get a cheaper haircut. read more

Great first experience at Fenny's! Tons of reviews on here from men, so here to add that she does great women's cuts too- and super affordable especially if you just need a simple cut like me. First off- the scalp massage during the shampoo lasted 3x as long as the haircut- literally at least 15-20 minutes. Amazing! Fenny listened to what I wanted in terms of the haircut, personally didn't need anyone using too much creative license so this worked for me. Moved into the city a few years ago and my roommate recommended going there after I foolishly paid $25-$30 for an ear lowering at other places in the neighborhood. It was the best decision I could have made. I've been going there ever since to see Fenny herself and she has always done a bang up job. Fenny is extremely friendly and takes pride in her work. I think she usually closes around 6pm but you can literally give her a call if you are running late and she'll gladly wait a few extra minutes to ensure you're able to get a cut. The first time I went there she told me she was the first business on the block years and years ago and has only changed her prices once! ROCK ON FENNY! I walked in when Fenny was cutting another gentleman's hair and in a few minutes she was done and it was my turn. Fenny is very amicable and cut my hair in less than 15 minutes! She also rinsed my hair after she cut it for free, which almost never happens. She's instantly likable and if you can speak Cantonese, you'll be able to experience her in her element. There are plenty of hair style magazines in the waiting area to give you ideas and she's had the salon for 15 years, which, in this economy, says a lot! Plus, like so many have already noted, you can't beat the great prices! Service was awesome and I walked out with a new haircut for less than 20 bucks, tip included! Excellent quality men's haircut. I've been there 4 times now and I've been happy each time. The first time I went the owner/stylist talked to me for quite a bit to make sure she understood what I wanted. This place is a little bit farther away from the city center so it doesn't get as busy but this means that she puts in the time to give me a proper cut and not rush through it. Ok, so I've never personally had my hair cut here, but I've sat in a chair next to my friend Brian while he had his cut by Miss Fenny herself. Brian had been raving about the magical hands of Fenny, so I had to go witness the cut myself. She works fast, like Edward Scissorhands fast, and with dramatic flourishes and side steps that make it all seem like a dance. She's upbeat and loves to laugh, and she'll have you in and out of there in under 10 minutes (I think it's because she cuts hair dry, at least the men, so that is a time saver in itself). Overall, I was impressed, and somewhat fascinated by her. The place redefines "no frills" but who cares when you are in such good hands. read more

I went to Fenny's based on the reviews of her razor techinque and that she probably knew how to handle thick, straight, asian hair. I was pretty disappointed with my hairstyle. I showed her a picture of what my hair use to look like, and my hair ended up 3-4 inches shorter. Fenny's explanation why my hair was cut so short was because of the type of layers I was requesting. I have a hard time believing her because my other stylist back home could produce the same layers without cutting 3-4 inches of my hair. This was a sign that she may not be that great of a stylist. I did like the way she cut my bangs, and the haircut sort of grew out nicely. However, I will not be going back to Fenny's salon read more
