If you are a woman or someone with shoulder-length to long hair DO NOT COME HERE! The staff was friendly but absolutely ruined my hair--they gave me a haircut that looked nothing like what I had requested. One of the ladies cut it horribly (it was clear she didn't know how to cut thicker hair), and then the other lady had to come and fix it. But even so, with both hairstylists, it felt like they were hacking away at pieces of my hair with absolutely no precision--and now I have very uneven layers :( My haircut looks so bad and I broke down in tears as soon as I got back to my dorm. This is literally my first ever Yelp review because the experience I had here was so bad, and I don't want others to make the same mistake I made of coming here. read more

I've usually gotten a good cut here with Sophia - usually have come out looking great, but not always. A few times I've experienced communication challenges or she's gone ahead and done something I didn't want. I also think for guys' hair, she could stand to be better at doing fades - they're seldom smooth, and often take 2-3 days to look more natural. I've kept coming mostly because the prices are very fair and reasonable, and there aren't a lot of alternatives in the neighborhood. However, I eventually got frustrated with the fuzzy approach to appointments, which is the key problem in my book. I always made appointments because I don't like to wait around and the calendar in school can be packed, but it seemed like she was always squeezing in folks and it wasn't uncommon to be told to wait 10 minutes but wind up waiting 30. Several times, she'd double book appointment time slots. read more

This place made me realize pretty much anyone can claim to be a barber. Don't come here if you're a woman!! It became pretty clear early on that my guy had no clue how to style women's hair and had no clue about layering. He basically just lined up all my hairs and cut them in the curved shape that I had requested, making the line as clean as possible for 45 minutes. He did not thin out the hair at the bottom at all, and the result was that my hair felt extremely "thick" at the bottom rather than tapering off in a more natural way. I've never received a haircut so unpolished before. The guy was also slow. He was extremely friendly but definitely felt like a fraud. Not worth the $70. read more

I really wanted to like this place because of how nice the stylists are, but sadly I had a bad experience recently. Before coming here, I checked Yelp to make sure this place did both men and womens' cuts. It appeared they did. At $30/cut for women, it seems like a bargain, but it's really not. First of all, you cannot make an appointment on Saturday, so you have to wait a long time. Second, there's no wash, so you're paying $30 for a dry cut, which is a lot less precise. Third and most importantly, it became abundantly clear to me that the stylist who cut my hair is not trained to cut hair for women. As someone with long, straight hair, I asked for a trim and minimal layers. Simple enough, right? Well, what I got was something that looked unprofessional. Not only was my hair not layered, the ends were a mix of jagged and blunt tips. It was also shorter than I wanted, and while the side swept bangs weren't a disaster they also were cut a bit too short, which resulted in some cowlicks. I would not recommend this place to my female friends. I believe this place is mainly for mens' cuts but they ventured into doing simple, no frills kind of trims for women. If I were a student, I'd come here for sure, but if you need your hair to look neat and professional, it is not the place for you. read more

I came in for a drop-in on a Sunday afternoon and was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Kelly (I think that was her name) did a great job trimming/layering my hair. (I started with hair past my elbows-- it now falls a little below my bra strap.) This is definitely a no-frills salon (you're literally getting just a cut- no wash/blowout) but the ladies here know what they're doing! I'm a satisfied customer. read more

This used to be my go-to place for the last 2 years but I decided to not come by anymore because of the very long lines and they recently raised their prices. If you don't have an appointment, you'll often stand to wait over an hour. There's been several times I buffered about 90 minutes for a haircut but ended up having to leave because 90 minutes wasn't enough. Appointments can help sometimes but I either end up waiting about 30 to 45 minutes still or they double booked or couldn't find my appointment. There were a few times when the wait was under 45 minute. However I don't like to take the gamble of wasting 2 hours and still not getting my hair cut. read more

I don't typically write reviews (as you'll notice based on my profile...) but after reading some terrible reviews, I thought I would be sure to leave some love for my new favorite (and affordable!) hair stylist in town- Helen. The last few years I have fallen off the "cut/highlight my hair every 6-8 weeks" wagon in hopes to achieve a more natural, long and to be honest, cheaper hair routine. After almost a year since my last haircut, I asked my beloved neighbor where she got her awesomely edgy yet wearable do. Surprisingly she told me it was this little salon in Harvard Square, and that it was $25! Seriously? I was used to paying $65 (plus tip) just down the street. Anyway, I went to see the recommended stylist, Helen, and she was great. If you have bangs, or want bangs, she KNOWS how to cut them. I've had bangs for about 10 years, so I do know what I like and what to ask for, but her expertise and knowledge on how to cut them so they fall right is amazing. One of the, if not best, bang jobs I've had. Besides all that, the salon may not be "hip" in its decor, but is certainly quaint and resembles a Vermont ski chalet from outside. My encounter with the other folks working there has always been friendly, and I've always been able to be fit in to see Helen last minute (none of this booked out for a month business). Lately, I have found it delightful for my everyday hair to look like something worn by your favorite badass Japanese video game or anime character (complete with totally fun-but-not-too-unnatural color), with the versatility to style it more normally so that my grandmother didn't have a heart attack when she saw me. Before that, I also loved to, you know, highlight my hair because computers just don't give the same kinds of natural highlights to your hair like the sun does. And I've worn it at various lengths, depending on what the season was, with the consideration that I was too lazy to get to the salon except every few months. Oh, and I hate mushroom-hair. And that, friends, is about all of the direction I've ever given Helen for styling my hair and she has consistently given me the best friggin hair styles and color I've ever gotten. (And that's a loaded statement, because I have had some pretty awesome stylists in the other places I've lived as well.) This is a fairly no-frills hair salon, but so worth it for a $30 cut with a good deal of styling. Sophie cut my hair and checked in frequently to make sure she was giving me the look I was going for. She took her time and did a great job. It's always a risk to go to a new stylist and I was so happy that this time the risk paid off! Also, I have been wanting to go in this building for years! I had previously come here for a haircut and received an excellent one. However, I went back again and had the same stylist, gave her the exact same description of hairstyle as last time, and she even said she remembered me, so I thought I'd controlled for everything, but the cut came out completely differently this time and it's not at all what I'd expected; it's shorter and way more layered; I had to stop her from making it even more so! Just awful. I had the middle-aged woman with long dark 80s hair (note to self, never let a hairdresser with out-of-style hair work on you) who doesn't speak English. She didn't even shampoo, just wet it a little bit. I asked for a trim, and she didn't touch the back at all, just cut the front into one sawed-off looking line. People have been asking me if I did it myself. The worst part is, it's not $14 as the sign might make you think. That's only for men's clipper cuts. The lady with short blondish hair said she would give me a discount--apparently she could tell the other one hardly did anything but screw things up--and so asked for $20. They also don't let you know up front that it's cash only. I kind of wish I had gone out to the ATM and stiffed them. I'm going to have to spend more money having the damage fixed. read more

Beware of this place! I was having a bad hair day on Friday and was walking along Mass Ave when I saw this no-frills salon. I checked out the Yelp reviews and they seemed ok, so I walked in and asked to have some bangs cut. What could go wrong? Just some simple bangs. Think again. The woman (long dark hair, seat closest to the door) told me she was about to go home but that she would cut my bangs. I showed her a photo of a friend of mine who has long, thick sweeping bangs, the kind you can just tuck behind your ear if you want to. She looked at me and said "do you ever style your hair?" in a kind of dismissive way. I told her that I was having a bad hair day, but that I had flat-irons and could handle bangs. She then proceeded to cut these very short, thin bangs, and afterwards she told me that she didn't think I could handle long bangs. So not only did she completely ignore my request/photo, she gave me bangs that are much more high maintenance! A friend who saw me afterwards asked me if I had cut my bangs myself, they're that bad. Today I will be going to another salon to try to fix this - maybe by cutting longer bangs that these short little wisps can hide in. but it will take months for this problem to be properly solved. I went here for a haircut (no wash) a few weeks ago. I'm one of these people who like to give basic guidelines (how many inches off, layers or no layers, general shape) and then rely on the hair stylist's own experience and judgment to figure out what will work with my hair. My bottom line is that I need a style that's wash-and-go. I think the cut was okay, but not quite wash-and-go. After the first post-haircut wash, it was pretty evident that the layers were still too choppy, even though my stylist had tried to make them more gradual during the cut. One annoying thing about my experience is also that when I first called to book my haircut, the receptionist told me it would be $30 or $35 for cutting long hair. When I got done, it was $40. Huh? It's not that I didn't think the cut was worth $40, but I didn't really appreciate what seemed to be an arbitrary price hike. In summary -- the stylist was super nice, the cut was okay (I managed to fix the shaping a bit myself at home so now it is less choppy and more wash-and-go), and I wasn't crazy about the random pricing. read more

I came in here once just to get a *quick* trim. What I got was an cute, elderly lady who reminded me of my maternal grandmother and seemed almost scared to cut my hair. I hadn't realized that "trim" meant "cut my hair with the utmost apprehension!" Silly me. While I'm sure she meant well, I was a bit annoyed that she would cut about a half-inch here and there, then ask if everything was okay every two seconds. It's fine, lady! I just wanted three inches taken off! That shouldn't take so long! JUST CUT MY HAIR. As a guy who generally keeps my hair short, I'm on the lookout for a cut that's simple, straightforward, and inexpensive. Andre's Salon delivers, and since I live close to Harvard Square, it's very convenient as well. I've been a regular for over a year. As some reviewers have noted, the quality does depend on who cuts your hair, and the various employees have their own "styles." Personally, the only person I would avoid is the matronly woman who usually sits behind the counter on the left as you walk in. She's incredibly nice, but she gave me an uneven, asymmetric cut the first time, which was repeated again recently (I gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe she just had a bad day the first time--nope, happened again). Generally though, everyone is very nice and the cuts are decent for the price. They even have a water cooler for customers. read more

Sofia saved my hair's life and revived it! Prior to going to Andre Hair Salon, I received the worst haircut I have received in my entire life. I frantically looked for barbers and salons on a Sunday evening- calling 5-6 and turning me down. Not until Sofia picked up the phone and said to come in! I told her my story, and she was the most empathetic, kind human being that I have met in my entire life. We had a very heartwarming encounter and was very kind to me in my entire stay. This is the second time I waited for 1h 45min, didn't get haircut and came out! Once I got in, the owner said, "just wait for 45 min and get your haircut"! Most people in the hair cutting business nowadays are content to cut with whatever integrity level they please and get you out. 25 yrs old and there have only ever been 2 places I've gone to more than 2x times to get a haircut. Got my hair cut here in Jan 2016. As others have mentioned, the price is very good, compared to nearby salons. However, I think this place i probably a lot better for men's cuts than for women's cuts. After my haircut, I noticed that my hair was a little uneven when I got home, and wasn't really all that satisfied with my haircut. They stand by their work though and were very gracious about fixing it for free when I called back about it, which is why I'm giving 3 stars, instead of 2. I did have to go back twice though, since the first fix didn't quite do it... and so of course, two fixes caused my hair to end up a little shorter than i would have liked. This experience could also be on account of my having Asian hair though... maybe they are just not that experienced with Asian hair? Who knows.. TLDR: I tend to feel meh about most salons, and this one was about the same. read more

I hated the fact that it was cash only and was told after the fact. Who carries $200 around in cash? I needed a new hairdresser since mines moved, and I was so disappointed with the out come. I still had more than 60% of my grey hairs visible and Sophia and the the guy that worked there had no clue what to do. I feel like this place is sketchy to say the least because she insisted that I still pay for 2 color process where I got partial highlights. So unhappy with this place. read more

This is the best hair salon that I have found in the Harvard Square area. The cuts are quick, easy, basic, and dependable, and the barbers are friendly and professional. Cash only. It is a small-ish shop, and often busy, so you'll have to wait maybe 30-60 minutes if you go at popular times (after work, Saturday afternoon, etc.), so take a book to read, or go at an off-peak time. read more

OK. So new baby + measly teaching fellowship = I can no longer, in good conscience, afford to pay $60 plus tip for a haircut at Judy Jetson's. Embarrassingly vast amounts of internet research later, I have a name: Helen Huppuch, and a location I would have never dreamed about patronizing otherwise: the little Swiss chalet tucked in between Oona's and the most hideous apartment block in Harvard Square: the "men's" hair place with the "$14 haircut" sandwich board on the sidewalk. Risk and reward potentials wage battle in my psyche. I call and book the appointment with a thudding heart. I arrive for the appointment and wait uneasily in the bright fluorescent lighting, nervously flipping through (battered) fashion magazines and observing the complexion-distorting effects of a brick wall painted the color of stale beeswax in the row of salon mirrors. Helen finishes the no-frills haircut she's given the guy ahead of me and introduces herself. I begin to feel a bit better - what a nice, down-to-earth lady! We discuss my hair ambitions at length, complete with photos pulled from her Pinterest board, reassurances about my thinned postpartum volume and weirdly altered texture, compliments on my (surprisingly decent) home dye job, etc. I've booked for a wash and blow dry but Helen tells me she can cut my hair dry - no need to waste the dollars. By the time she picks up the scissors, I've relaxed and am enjoying myself. The no-frills atmosphere is seeming homey and comfortable, like Dolly Parton's converted carport salon in Steel Magnolias. I could get used to this. Helen puts the finishing touches on my hair. One part of me doesn't want her to be finished - it's been fun. The other part of me wants to leap out into the overpriced mediocrity of Harvard Square and chortle with triumph. The haircut is awesome. It doesn't need a blow dry, or styling stuff, or the hair I wish I had or used to have. It's polished but a tiny bit punk. It's perfect. I pay my 25 bucks. I absolutely love Andre hair salon. I've been going for about three years now -- I really don't go anywhere else. They do a phenomenal job with my hair, and the staff are amazing. I look forward to seeing Sophia every time I go in. I couldn't recommend Andre more highly... except for that it might cause you, dear reader, to go for a haircut there, and make the line longer for me ; ) In summary: their prices are unbeatable (please tip, to recognize the great service and wonderful people), the haircuts are great, and the staff are delightful. read more

There's not a lot that needs to be said re Andre: they will cut your hair for a reasonable price. If you want a fancy salon experience, this is absolutely not your place. But if you want to have less hair than you currently have, want the result to be acceptable, and want it done with wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am efficiency and cost, here you have it. I have rarely been THRILLED with a haircut I got here, but I am not a connoisseur of my haircuts-- I am merely interested in functionality, convenience, and price, and Andre has all of those in spades. The one notable downside is that the waits/lines can sometimes be surprisingly long for such a no-frills, under-the-radar establishment. But that hasn't stopped me from making Andre my haircutter of choice for the past 10+ years. read more

I was drawn in the first time by the "Hair Cuts-$12+" sign and my experience was good enough that I came back a second time. Granted, my hair cut ended up costing $20, but they warned me with the little "+", so I can't complain. I remember the sweet old lady that Jocelyn mentions, and I'm glad I didn't have to endure a marathon trim session with her. My lady was pretty quick and gave me a decent dry cut. Nothing spectacular.
