I have such a bad taste from this salon...I called before they opened to see if it was okay if I got to my appt 15min late (was having to deal w my toddler in AM), and the front desk said okay. I arrived 2min after when I said I would and the person who was going to cut my hair gave me attitude and said she wouldn't be able to blow dry my hair. Literally 2 min and I had to miss my appt for my husbands grandmas 100th birthday. They were so rude and I could hear them mumbling about respecting other peoples time as I left. I wanted to cover the grey on my roots, tone down the red in my hair, and get a few highlights around my face. I have auburn hair, and wanted a root color and toner that was more on the brown side. I left the salon with bright red hair and no highlights around my face (just a few in the back of my hair). I was upset with the color and came back to have it corrected. The stylist was quite rude at the beginning and applied a darker color to my roots and more highlights around the front. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but she got dye all over my scalp and in my eye. I actually left the salon with a bunch of dye stains still around my hairline. My scalp was burning after this visit, but I didn't think too much of it as I'd just had it dyed twice in a short time span. But that evening I couldn't sleep at it was burning so bad and I started developing a rash on my scalp, ears and face. I had to go to the doctor and get steroids to bring down the allergic reaction. I'm still having burns and rashes on my face and having to apply steroid creams. My husband finally called the salon to express what happened and see if they had any advice. They said this has happened a few times so I'm wondering if it's this stylists' approach to applying color on the skin or the fact that no one suggested doing a patch test or anything (this was the 2nd time I've ever dyed my hair.. I had highlights a few years ago, which I told the stylist)... I think a patch test would have been merited. In any case, they were dismissive and suggested that it could be something else causing the allergic reaction on my scalp and face, which is ridiculous. The doctor said it's common to be allergic to hair dye, especially darker colors and they should have tested first. There was nothing offered to help, no money back, no ingredients list, no advice. Worst salon experience I've ever had and a huge regret!! I highly recommend going to a salon that has more care for your well-being read more

First things first: Kristen is a hair genius. I was hoping to find a great stylist in my neighborhood, and the stars aligned to lead me to Salon Luna. Kristen perfectly understands color, as well as how to cut and color fine hair (a rare gift!). I requested the color of wheat for my hair, and that is exactly what I got. She truly listens to what you want, then uses her expertise to bring your sketch to fruition. I called and was scheduled for a full highlight and cut the following day. Like many cities, the price is steep, but you definitely get what you pay for with Kristen's talent...and she's extremely kind and down to earth, as well. read more

Great experience every-time! I've had cut/blow dry from Kristen and also from Tracy and it's always been solid! Quick and easy and pleasant conversation. I give 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons: the salon and the online booking system. The salon is in a great location and super cute designs! I haven't been during COVID so this is a not a comment on current environment, but when I've gone in the past, the salon gets busy and feels crowded real quick. It's loud and the chairs are really close together and it's not exactly my favorite atmosphere for a haircut. It's a small space and they make the best of it. Again, this is not a reflection of current times, but before COVID. It also isn't possible to just book online myself - you have to call. When you submit a message via Yelp to book, a member of the staff will call or request you call to book. I would much prefer to be able to just book/modify/cancel online and I'd happily pay a deposit or agree to a 24/hr cancel to do so. read more

I came in for a light toner to soften the summer blonde and now I'm maroon red and a consult from a master colorist in Newbury street says I'll likely have to chop my hair off. Getting my hair done is a particularly anxiety-inducing experience for me. I am someone who doesn't want to make a ruse, so I will often bite my tongue when something isn't the way I want it for the sake of making sure other people are happy. And getting my hair done is no exception to that. I had been searching for a hair salon in Somerville for a few weeks now as I've been going back and forth about getting my hair cut short again. I finally made the decision and booked an appointment at Salon Luna. When I made the call to book, the person on the phone asked me what my hair was like and said he had some ideas for stylists who would be a good fit for my hair type. I LOVE that they did that. It made me really excited for my appointment. When I arrived at the salon, there were plenty of bottles of hand sanitizer and everything was very clean. Everyone was wearing a mask and clients were spaced out when hair was being cut, washed, or styled. They are not doing blow dries at the time which was also reassuring to hear that they are taking this seriously. I was seated and Sandra came to talk about what we would do with my hair. She was so incredibly friendly and had a lot of ideas and expertise on what she though would look good. We talked a little bit while she was cutting, but I didn't feel pressured at all about having to talk if I didn't want to, which was really nice. When she was done, I payed and we chatted some more about styling techniques. And then I left....but our journey doesn't end there. When I got home, my hair was starting to really dry and I didn't really love it. It was a lot longer than I had wanted and the layers weren't falling like I anticipated. I debated for a long time about whether or not I should call, especially because there are some iffy reviews on here about customer service once the client had left. But after much debate, I decided to call back. The person on the phone was so nice and said that they would absolutely be able to make an adjustment and scheduled me again with Sandra for the next day. When I came in today for the adjustment, Sandra was so kind and understanding about it. She expressed the reasons why she didn't cut it short, but said that if it's what I really wanted, then it would look great and we should go ahead and do it. The second appointment took about 20 minutes and I left feeling so so good. I was not charged a second time. I will definitely be back to Salon Luna. The customer service was awesome and Sandra was so so nice. She honestly made the whole experience worth it. read more

I came here for a color correction after another salon in Boston did a horrendous color job. All I wanted from the beginning was to go back to being an ash-blonde, but the other salon made my color dark purple and green so I wasn't sure if I would even be able to achieve that. I was so happy I came here and met Ashley, the hairstylist, because I got exactly the look I wanted in the first place! First, I am appreciative towards their availability: I called on Columbus Day, a holiday, and they were open. They were able to take me first thing the next day. Second, I am grateful for how thorough Ashley was in asking me about all the treatments to my hair that transpired in the last year (very little) and in the last week with the previous salon (way too much). I appreciate how she listened well and looked my hair over carefully, and finally walked me through the steps of the processes she would need to undertake to get it back to normal. She did not sugar-coat it, she was honest that it could take time to get to where I want it to be. I also appreciate how she communicated the next steps thoroughly, like how to care for the damaged ends and when to hold off to another visit. Thirdly, I think the price is quite fair for the quality of work being done. If you are in the unfortunate position of needing an emergency color correction, I would say that Salon Luna is well worth the money. read more

I just received the worst customer service and haircut here that I have ever had. Upon getting home, I noticed how uneven and unbalanced. I called the salon back and they were rude the minute I mentioned that I was unhappy with my cut. The manager said she couldn't fit me in the same day for a quick fix. They told me not to come back and go to another salon. So I did. I have been going here for 5 years, but not anymore. I will gone to a better salon now. Edit: They try to sound all sweet in their response below, but I have never had such horrible customer service. You did not offer me multiple times to return on the same day, so let's not lie here. It was one time that was 15 minutes from when I called that I would not be able to make obviously. I found it odd that you didn't have even 10 minutes to fix a huge mistake you made later in the day. When something is that incorrect, you do the right thing and make time. Also why would I wait hoping you could maybe get me in to fix a haircut that is a good 1/2 to 1 inch off in length on one side? I've been twice since Covid and I always feel that they go out of their way to make clients comfortable and safe. Sandra is so nice and such a talented individual - my hair always gets so many compliments for months after the cut and balayage. I came to Salon Luna to chop my lengthy hair (mid-back) into a long bob (à la Lucy Hale). I was really nervous, but Helen knew exactly what I was looking for. Helen attentively listened to all the specific things I requested, no matter how small my concerns. She even brought things to my attention, like if I still wanted the cut to be long enough to be put in a ponytail and that we could start long and shorten the cut If I wanted to. A month later, and I am still wildly delighted by my inaugural visit to Salon Luna. After too many not-quite-right haircuts since relocating to Boston, I was feeling down on my luck and had succumbed to sequestering myself in the bathroom once a season with some hair shears from the drug store. I called Salon Luna on a whim, after hearing accolades from a gentleman. Leah was a charm from the moment she answered the phone, squeezing me in for an appointment that evening on my way home from work, and warmly receiving me upon my arrival. Whilst waiting, both Leah and Jose, quashed my nerves and had me quite excited for my impending cut. Kristen graciously received me to her station, where we had a little chat about my hair woes (pin straight + my preference for low to no maintenance). In less than an hour's time, Kristen had cleaned up my shaggy locks, leaving me feeling a better version of myself. I was left with an invitation to return for a free bang trim as well as to see their space post-renovation, with Jose graciously extending sample sachets of a Living Proof product I am now smitten with using at home. I told her I wanted to let it grow out but was concerned about thinning. She allowed me to decide to keep it the same bob I'd always had & I left happy. It took @ 4 months to grow out. For reasons I won't go into I didn't go back for over 7 months but when I did I was up for cutting it all off. I told her my reasons why & she was able to talk me into a different shape instead. I'm so used to a bob that I can't see past it. I expressed my fears & she was able to soothe me into something more modern & more my age. I was assured my fears of aging hair were more altered than they actually were. Then, something strange happened; she talked me into a blowout. I have naturally curly hair & am arrogant about it. I knew right then & there I had found my stylist. It looked great & I got tons of compliments. Then when I washed & styled it again, it is the best cut I've had in a decade. I have very uncooperative hair. I only cut my hair about every 2 years, and typically donate it and then let it grow out into donation length again. Over the past twenty-odd years I've been doing this I've had some pretty horrible haircuts (once a hairdresser told me 'It's okay, you can just pomade it all down!') because very few people believe me when I tell them about the issues I've had with my haircuts in the past (bubble hair, tips going every which way, hair flat on the top but a floof pyramid at the bottom...) Most of the time I've just sighed and tied it back to hide it when my haircut's bad, but I also am only going to have use of one hand for the next two months and so needed it short AND attractive! The salon itself is warm with great light, wonderful customer care service, and has a lovely view. I came to Ms. Kristen with this unfortunate pile of requirements and specifications, and she took it all in stride. She identified pretty much every hair problem that I have--a natural part that's not in the center, a lot of hair, very fluffy hair, and different patterns between my right and left side hair growth. And then snip snip! The whole time, she was very congenial and friendly, but appropriately so. She gave me a lot of wonderful tips I had never heard before for managing the unruliness of my hair. And at the end of it, she told me, "It's so cute!" And, looking into the mirror, I couldn't help but agree with her. Two days later, and I'm still in love with my hairstyle. One of the girls I work with is planning to get her hair cut the same way. And for the first time in twenty years, I'm thinking of keeping it this way for awhile rather than growing it out and donating it as I always do. This is a gem of a find tucked away in a converted 2nd floor apartment overlooking Porter Square. The owner got back to me right away when I requested an appointment through Yelp, and I was scheduled for later that week with Kristen. Kristen was absolutely amazing and took the time to listen to what I wanted and also made great suggestions and hair care tips. The end result was a polished and professional sleek haircut that added texture while steep keeping the length long. I feel like she knew what I wanted more than I did! I definitely recommend Salon Luna and Kristen. The prices are reasonable for Boston/Cambridge. They also have a ton of chairs and stylists and great hours for those of us who can only make it to the salon after our corporate 9-5ers. read more

I had my hair cut here last Friday and I'm so happy! Jay cut my hair which had had a baliagse (sorry for the spelling) done back in November and only one other trim in April. I told Jay to do to whatever she thought was best for my face and hair type (fine and dark). I trusted her and she cut a few inches off to shoulder length and framed it with my face. Couldn't have asked for an easier way to make an appointment, reception and stylist! They'll are super nice and know how to treat their customers. I never wrote a review about my experience with Salon Luna in March of 2016, but after reading Liz Y's review about her balayage I couldn't help but be disappointed that this salon is still not holding themselves accountable for a job poorly done. I understand color isn't always guaranteed, but in instances like mine and Liz Y's, you should never allow a client to walk out the door miserable, especially if it's not even close to what the client had in mind. My balayage experience was very similar to Liz Y's. My experience over a year ago has left my hair damaged beyond belief. I have been working closely with a high end salon to trying to bring it back to a normal/healthy level through cuts, treatments, and balancing out the color. The picture I posted of my hair was after I had already returned to Salon Luna to let them know I was upset and this was the correction. After the third visit back to the salon, the woman at the front desk got defensive and decided to lecture me on balayage technique. I was told in a very defensive manner how it's no different from regular highlights. Regardless of their inability to own up to their mistakes, even if there isn't a difference in the technique (which there is) I still wasn't satisfied with the outcome and shouldn't have had to deal with a rude lecture from the staff. The owner eventually came over and gave me the refund I had requested. I have always received fantastic cuts from this salon. I have just returned from Salon Luna and found that my hairstylist, Kristen, was everything I was hoping for and more! The place is upstairs in a cute little apartment- looking area, a little old-school Boston charm which I loved. I was nervous because I was walking in and needed a cut, color and foil... As I had a big event tomorrow. Kristen very kindly took me in when she was available and right away she made sure she was clear on what I wanted - her questions were precise and clear. I showed her pictures and we discussed color, different pieces, and even the cut before we did anything. (Note: my hair was a hot mess - long roots, color was faded and really light, and it hadn't been cut in a long time so it wasn't very healthy.) She took her time, was a pleasure to speak with and she just did SUCH a fantastic job! I'm insanely happy with the results. During corona lockdown, I colored my hair myself. I was aiming for ash blonde from a dark blonde but it turned out very golden and warm for my skin tone. I went in to Luna and Sandra did a superb job adjusting the color and trimming. I would easily recommend this place to anyone. Blonde is such a difficult color to work with. Yikes. Avoid this place at all costs. I feel a bit bad writing this, because the girl who colored my hair was very nice. But she did a horrible job. Like laughably bad. Never in my life have I been unhappy with hair color until I went to this salon. Generally, even if it's not exactly what you asked for - it's usually ok. BUT NOT HERE! Not only was the color not even close what I asked for, but I had multiple blond spots on the back of my head (I'm dark brunette). My hair was essentially orange all over, even though all I had asked for was a balayage to make the ends lighter. I also left with some crazy stripe-y highlights in the front. I basically had to wear a hat for a week until I could get it fixed. I have no idea why or how the girl managed to do this. My appointment didn't start on time and although I had booked balayage, they ended up doing 3 different things to my hair (it takes a lot to make it orange and add bad bad highlights and spots in the back)... so in the end, I was charged 3x what I went in expecting to pay. (Only to have to pay another salon to have to fix the nonsense from Salon Luna!). I just called the salon about this and the gentleman who answered the phone proceeded to lecture me for 10 minutes. It was the most ridiculous phone call I've ever had with a salon. He was interrupting me, lecturing me, being condescending, and finished by saying "If you write a bad Yelp review it will mean nothing to us. We have wonderful Yelp reviews! If you write one, I'm going to respond right away!" So I look forward to him lecturing me some more in the comments of this review! Went in to receive the same gloss as I previously got. The color was completely different as seen by family and friends, just a little out of my comfort zone. I called trying to gain a positive, communicative relationship as I just moved to Boston and was looking for a permanent salon. I complimented the stylist who did my hair and said it just must have been a mistake and asked for whatever solution we could have, so in the future we wouldn't have a problem. Additionally, the receptionist told me there were no notes on the color. The owner, Jose, called me back and told me the stylist used the exact color then proceeded to verbally attack me. He told me that "99.9% of people" trust the salon and that I need to "work on myself" because he did not do anything wrong. He proceeded to tell me that there is "no possibility" it was different and that it was entirely me and not his "top stylist." He additionally commented that he stood over the bowl and watched her mix the color.... I was just looking to have positive communication but instead I had to be attacked and told I am the only problem. I think in the future it would be better to use a client's opinion as well as a stylist and put no blame on anyone. While everyone was very pleasant, my haircut turned out to be exactly what I didn't want. I expressed that I was in desperate need of styling and shaping, but the hairdresser simply removed length without any trace of layering or angles (Which is what I requested). When I went back expressing my dissatisfaction, I was given an uneven layer. This occurred approximately one month ago. Not only have I resorted to trimming the obviously uneven pieces myself, but I've worn a hair clip to hide the long, shapeless front sections of hair that drape down my face like heavy curtains. I've booked a hair appointment at another salon with the hopes of having this haircut corrected. read more
